2NE1

2NE1 are a YG Entertainment group formed in 2009, marketed originally as a "female Big Bang." Fittingly, they debuted in a song with Big Bang (Lollipop) and released their first solo single, Fire, shortly after. Their name means "New Evolution of the 21st Century," which is just a lame way to explain away that they changed their name from 21 at the last minute due to someone else using it already. :weeeh:

To summarize, cutesy is not their thing. Their songs are typically pretty hip-hop (and more recently, electronica) inspired, and they are very strong on girl power. Their fashion is unique, sometimes to the point of being ridiculous... but they can always be described as fierce.

MEMBERS

8PqMX.jpg

CL (Lee Chae-Rin): Fearless leader. 22 years old. Supposedly speaks English, Korean, French, and Japanese. Born in Seoul, but lived much of her life traveling around England, Japan and France. She is essentially the face of the group and invariably gets the most vocal and visual focus. She's pretty stoic around fans and gets way into her "baddest female" persona some days, but we love her anyway. Sometimes she shows her thighs and young men the world over get carried out on stretchers.

D0kAc.jpg

Dara (Sandara Park): 29 years old. Speaks Korean, English, and Tagalog. Originally debuted in the Phillipines after competing on a show called Star Circle Quest. She has a girlier, somewhat less powerful voice than the others, but has enough chutzpah to steal the spotlight from CL and Minzy routinely on their TV show. She is by far the most cheerful of the bunch and seems like a genuine sweetheart. She's put herself in charge of mothering other members and communicating with fans, and does a fine job of both.

MtZ25.jpg

Bom (Park Bom): 29 years old. Speaks Korean and English. In charge of lead vocals and short skirts. Let me get this out of the way: this girl is hilarious. Between her incredible lethargy, her addiction to corn, and her constant quest to avoid her trainer, she's essentially what makes 2NE1TV worth watching. She reminds me of tarepanda, if tarepanda liked telling people they have big butts and hid under tables while eating corn cold from a can.

5cRIa.jpg

Minzy (Gong Min-ji): 19 years old. Speaks Korean, attempts English. She's part of the more serious half of the group, along with CL. Discovered via an internet clip of her sick dance movez, the youngest member of 2NE1 primarily finishes out the "rap" portions of songs with CL. This baffles me, since her deep singing voice is very pleasant. When everyone else is off eating and molesting stuffed animals, she's hitting the treadmill and practicing diligently. Their CEO has done his best to stop her overly sexy dancing, but typically resorts to putting her in an oversized trenchcoat and hoping no one tries to arrest him for distributing child pornography. (Edit: She's legal now, so her CEO lets her grind floors with reckless abandon.)

2NE1TV

For such a popular group, 2NE1 rarely make variety, interview and comedy show appearances. This is just as well, because when they do it often ends up being super awkward for everyone involved. It's almost cringe-worthy sometimes, which makes their TV appearances outside of performances that much more sincere. [Edit: As fpd pointed out, they did have a Strong Heart appearance that worked out well.]

2NE1TV is a show dedicated to just following them around, a la MTV's Diary series. Since it's not scripted, there are periods when it's both uncomfortable and a bit boring... but it's also filled with genuinely hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking moments. Because YG Entertainment rules, they put up english subtitled versions of all the episodes on 2NE1's youtube channel. Overall, I give it two huge thumbs up. WATCH IT.

WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH ALL THE CORN

Bom really likes corn, like probably more than you like air. Subsequently, the corn cob has become a symbol of 2NE1 fandom. It's on the concert merchandise and everything. We're classy that way.

_________________________________________________________________

THERE. I had to get it out of my system. Everything in its place, and a place for everything.

In conclusion,

I always thought their name was some really dorky abbreviation for "to anyone".

If I remember correctly, it was going to be "21" originally but it was discovered that there was already another group with that name. Then it became 2ne1 which is a play on both 21 and "to anyone." I think you're supposed to think of it more as "21" though, because their fans call themselves "Blackjacks."

I love 2ne1, I probably stan for them more than any other Kgirl-group. I think my favorite thing about them is the fact that their songs are generally about, "Screw men, don't need them" which is a lot more interesting to me than "You're so cute I love you oppa." (Although...I ridiculously love SNSD too so what does that say about me? Conflicted.) That, and I think CL is awesome.

Also interesting tidbit, they are working will Will.I.am (did I write that correct? Don't care.) and there is talk about an eventual American debut. It will probably never work out, but on the bright side, CL has the best accent (in my opinion) and gets the most lines, so maybe that whole issue could be easier.

High fives, I stan 2NE1 like no one's business. Only Sunny from SNSD gets half as much love from me. :weeeh:

Yep, I mentioned the 21 thing in the OP. They've certainly taken advantage of the "to anyone" pun, but that's not what the name was supposed to be.

I really hope the will.i.am thing pans out. I loved some of what I heard them record on 2NE1TV.

I donno, I rather liked their Strong Heart appearance, and the only one who really seems to be awkward is Bom... who is just crazy awkward looking at all times, but in an adorable sort of way haha. That haters gonna hate gif is pretty amazing because of that reason.

Bom is so funny, I seriously don't even know how to explain it.

I felt like nearly all of their TV appearances outside of 2NE1TV were awkward. Strong Heart is the best of the bunch, though. Their interviews especially are always filled with these pauses. I think this is at least partially due to the fact that none of them go for the "Look, I'm cute and hyper!" thing.

Thanks, Petit baby.

Jeremey Scott is hideous, and so are the majority of the clothes he makes. I hate OMG FASHION people who create terrible looking shit just to call it fashion.

Been able to finally watch some episodes of 2NE1 tv on youtube, awesome show. Was so terribly awkward when Minzy was in the car acting cute haha. It's weird to think of a 17 year old Korean girl not being able to be cute, but it just doesn't fucking work at all for her haha.

(FANGIRL MODE ACTIVATE)

Can't Nobody is my absolute favorite MV from them. CL is so awesome. Minzy is still the coolest 17 year old on the planet and the spiked hoodie and military jacket still need to be mine.

I just kind of lament all the iffy green screen and special effects work on Dara's segment. Her first outfit is so great, too. Mrrow kitty! Also I always really, really want all their accessories. Dem rings!

PS: Did weights to this song this morning like a boss. CAN'T NOBODY HOLD US DOWN, HUFF PUFF.

I get so excited every time sadude is on board with me for something. And since this is my favorite Korean group, I am DOUBLY EXCITED. Now I just need eri to see the light.

As an aside, this is old-ish... but here's an English interview they did in Thailand for Yamaha. It was absurdly awkward and the questions were really bad, but I just enjoyed how clearly Minzy understood NOTHING. Also CL's rusty English was cute, it reminded me of how I speak German when I haven't spoken it daily in a long time.Like now, cry

Not as awesome as her first single but it's still pretty good because the MV ties in with her first single's MV and it had be sobbing like the baby I am. *snort* :cryalot:

Hm. I didn't interpret it that way because it wasn't the same actor. I loves me some Bom though, and this song is no exception.

Aww I thought so because you know they got married in the first one and then he dies and in this one she's finally excepting his death and letting go with him giving back the ring and telling her to move on.

It makes sense, but the different actor made me assume it wasn't intended that way. Some commenter said they simply couldn't get the same actor, but I haven't found a reliable source to back that up.

YG ON AIR is awesomesauce. What is YG ON AIR? Find out. There's a delicious Acoustic of Don't Cry within.

I can't help but feel this is partially a middle finger to Music Bank due to the Big Bang dispute. YG's method of teasing kind of supports that.

I guess it's a matter of intent, even though it's the same content. When I picture it as a standard TV reality show filmed and subsidized through commercials, it becomes less appealing than what I thought it was at first, which was that they hired a camera guy to follow them around (or gave a camera to one of their staff members) for the purpose of putting it on Youtube to share with fans. Yes, I realize the production values are too high for that, but it'd have been cool.

There's also the matter of control-- I watch half an episode (one youtube part) at a time, and sometimes watch a quarter of an episode (half a youtube part). I wouldn't be able to sit through entire episodes at a time at a pre-determined time slot with a fourth of the time spent on commercial breaks.

While I guess I can appreciate that, I am just happy that 2NE1TV exists at all. It's not your typical variety show, and it seems more sincere. They also provide subtitles on Youtube for foreign fans and the occasional dance tutorial. They seem to value that sort of thing more than, say, SM or JYP.

I dislike sitting through any TV like that. I just DVR everything now.

It's finally nice to hear a song that isn't autotuned to death. They need to do this more often, songs with no autotune.
