Recently the world was ruled by the big power "Idols" with their overwhelming magic.
Including "the media", "the politics", "the economy", all were controlled by the Idols...
The music other than the idol songs was seen as harmful, and the metal was not an exception.
The metallers who were robbed of their soul prayed for the restoration of the metal.
Before long, the prayers reached "the Fox God" who is in charge of the metal.
The Fox God named three girls, SU-METAL, YUIMETAL and MOAMETAL,
"BABYMETAL" meaning "the birth of the new metal",
and, as the dark heroines of the idol scene, has sent them down to this world.

Yui-Metal, Su-Metal, Moa-Metal

\m/ What is BABYMETAL? \m/

The coolest idol group you'll ever hear!

Originally, it was formed in 2010 as a sub-group of Sakura Gakuin. I'll leave researching Sakura Gakuin up to you, but in short it is a school-themed idol group, not entirely unlike Morning Musume. As with Japanese schools, there are various clubs within Sakura Gakuin - BABYMETAL is the Heavy Music Club group.

What music do they play? Fucking metal! Idol metal! The idol influence is becoming less strong than it was in their early releases and the new songs stand on their own as proper metal pieces, but you still can't mistake it. And you're into labels, the metal part is mostly of power, heavy, and death varieties.

\m/ Who is BABYMETAL? \m/

Su-Metal (Nakamoto Suzuka) - Vocals, Dance
Moa-Metal (Kikuchi Moa) - Screams, Dance
Yui-Metal (Mizuno Yui) - Screams, Dance

On the first impression you could say that BABYMETAL is just Su-Metal with two backup dancers, but it's not entirely true. Moa-Metal and Yui-Metal are gradually being given more to do, including their own solo song.

Su-Metal is no longer a Sakura Gakuin member. As she graduated from junior high school and turned 15, she had to graduate from Sakura Gakuin as well. However, following the group's success, she was allowed to remain a member and the leader of BABYMETAL.

\m/ Sub-groups? \m/

Yes, there even is a sub-group. It's called BLACK BABYMETAL, the members are Moa-Metal and Yui-Metal. They have released one song so far.

Su-Metal also had a solo song, however she doesn't have a sub-group name.

\m/ Discography \m/

Go look it up on some wiki! Instead, here's the best BABYMETAL songs, according to me:

MEGITSUNE - the latest single as of December 2013, with a very good PV. One of favourites.
IJIME, DAME, ZETTAI - I'm 99% sure the PV was shot in the stone mine museum we visited during our trip. Also, their major debut.
Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!! - the beautiful coming-of-age song.
Doki Doki☆Morning - debut song from 2011, only got a DVD single release.
Catch me if you can - a fun little song about playing hide-and-seek with Mr Ogre.
onedari daisakusen - BLACK BABYMETAL sub-group song. Probably my current favourite. I recommend reading the lyrics to this one, I laughed my ass off.
akatsuki - Su-Metal's solo song, a beautiful power ballad with some killer guitar solo dialogue in the middle.
BABYMETAL DEATH - the epic concert intro song. です <-> DEATH is my favourite Japanese pun. :lmfao:

\m/ Extra Videos \m/

Too good not to share:

Love Machine - yes, THIS Love Machine. Sung by Moa-Metal during an event. Ignore the fan-made video, it makes no sense.
Chokotto Love - another Hello! Project cover, by Yui-Metal. Same deal about the video.
Tsubasa wo kudasai - the classic song from Su-Metal's birthday concert.

Live at Inazuma Rock Fes 2013 - great performance with a real band, highly recommended. Thanks Anderei for this one!

Metallica Through the Never promo video - say what you want about today's Metallica, but being the official promotion face for their movie is a big deal. The girls are going places. :weeeh:

\m/ Resources \m/

Official Website
Official Youtube Channel
Enki-Du's Translation Blog - probably the best translation blog I've ever seen with a ton of cultural and background notes that help you understand the songs on a whole new level. This is where the opening verse of this post comes from. Go to this post if you just want to jump straight into song translations, though there's more than that to find there!

BABYMETAL will play a show in Taiwan with ChthoniC!

It's on February 2nd, 2014. They seem to get more and more recognized in the mainstream metal circles. Good luck to them!

A small ChthoniC showcase for those of you unfamiliar:

Sail into the Sunset's Fire
Supreme Pain for the Tyrant
Defenders of Bú-Tik Palace
Broken Jade
Live at Wacken 2012 - Full Show

Oh, so this is how you introduce a new group.  Impressive!

Just trying to give it somewhat coherent and easily updateable form, that all.

Two recent fan recordings from concerts:

Tamashii no RUFURAN - BABYMETAL covering one of my favourite Evangelion songs, what did I do to deserve such happiness in my life?? :omg: :cryalot:

Give Me Chocolate - presumably one of the new album songs, this should keep fans of both good old thrash metal and their more idol sound happy.

New PV, Gimme Choco :jam:

(Official short ver. if when that one goes down)

It's a live PV but a pretty good one as far as live PVs go. =3=

Ah, so that's what it was about. I saw their name at the end of the MM's segment on Music Station but assumed that was for whatever show aired right after MS. Yay for them, this actually is a big news. :dancey:

Their segment on Music Station.

They did really great. I wonder if Suzuka's sister sings as well as she does.

It was great! And I'm so glad they didn't lipsync during the performance. Suzuka must be one of the most talented idol singers right now. It could only be better if the band played for real.

And watching it you could just sense how nervous they were.

The LE album is sold out on CDJapan and HMV limits it to 1 per person due to high demand. It's all too exciting.

Also Tamori getting his kitsune up: priceless.

I dunno if you really wanted to know this or not, but here's a video of them singing together when they were at ASH, and a more recent video of just Himeka singing.

OMFG there's more of it! :weeeh:

And some solo Suzuka:

Basically everything on this guy's account. There's a few videos where she performs together with Riho during her ASH days!

I remember watching a documentary about Actor's School Hiroshima on Arte channel some 15 years ago. It impressed me a lot with the amount of work, effort and emotion the students put into their potential future careers. I know I have it recorded on VHS back at home, but the problem would be finding a working VHS deck to watch it, even if the tape is any good at all after so many years of neglect. :hahaha:

Five more days!

HMV finally showed their pre-order bonus poster:

It's back in stock on both HMV and CDJapan, though with limited availability.

There are previews of the other 2 new album songs on itunes. I gave in and listened to them, but I couldn't tell much other than that one of them is kinda slow-ish. Gimme Choco has grown on me a lot though.

Aaaand the full album is out in the wild already. I'll need to listen to the other two new songs a few more times, but I'm pretty sure Gimme Choco remains my favourite, followed by Akumu no Rinbukyoku and then 4 no Uta.
Gimme Choco lyrics translation (tentative) <- whoever their lyricist is, they seem to be channelling the spirit of Tsunku ca early 2000's. That is, completely off the wack and full of awesome. What's with the diet songs everywhere lately?...

Himeka (Su's sister from Nogizaka46) went to see the concert like the good sister she is

Short video clip of the wall of death part of IDZ, but can't see much action in the audience

I'm gonna spam the hell out of this thread, but it seems BABYMETAL IS COMING TO EUROPE! :jam:

If I'm reading it right, they announced during Budokan gig it will be Yui (June 20th) and Moa's (July 4th) birthday events. No dates yet, details to follow. :f5:

The girls seem to be in the nascent stages of blowing up globally. I'm seeing more and more posts about BABYMETAL in my FB feed from friends who've never listened to JPop. The cool thing is that, while it's clearly picked up the past week, it has actually been happening on a smaller scale for about six months now lead by actual metal fans who legitimately like them, and now the more mainstream music fans and bloggers seem to be turning them into the hot new novelty. Which will mostly pass quickly, but I think they might have more staying power than, say, Psy, based on the fact that BABYMETAL's novelty is based around the mesh of musical genres, as opposed to one specific viral video. At the very least I think they'll get a proper world tour out of this before it's all said and done.

I bet the author thought his opening line was just so fucking clever:

"Here's the latest entry in Signs the Music Apocalypse Is at Hand — a Japanese girl group playing ultra-poppy death metal."

Fuck off, hipster. BABYMETAL is the the only interesting thing going on in rock and roll today. As a musical genre, rock has been damn near irrelevant for a decade now.
