well, it's kind of the beginning of the fiscal year and school year and all that good stuff.
EDIT:
Goes to show how reading the article is important too. The original plan to start the new reign on 1/1/2019 was dismissed as the Palace didn't want to disrupt their preparations for the 30th Anniversary of Hirohito's passing, which is on January 7th.

Emperor Akihito to abdicate March 31st, 2019, ending the Heisei period
Crown Prince Naruhito will take the throne and become the 126th Emperor of Japan on April 1st.
What will the period of Naruhito's reign be called?

I don't think that's known yet.
Sometimes the previous slogan is still used until a new one is proclaimed, even if there's already a new tennou.

New York Times article about women running for Parliament in Japan and how Japan has the lowest percentage of female lawmakers of any developed country.
I was struck by the name of the candidate profiled in the piece: Kaori Ishikawa. First and last names of two former members of MM. And her rival is Yuko Nakagawa. Change the "g" to a "z" and...

Voice actress Hiromi Tsuru has passed away at 57. Some of her notable roles included Bulma (Dragon Ball), Meryl Stryfe (Trigun), Ukyo Kuonji (Ranma 1/2), Madoka Ayukawa (Kimagure Orange Road), Naomi Hunter (Metal Gear Solid series).
Sad news. She was hilarious as Bulma and unforgettable as Madoka in KOR.

The American pilot who led the last bombing raid on Japan in WWII--on the day of Japan's surrender--has died at the age of 93. His obituary tells a remarkable story of decades-later reconciliation.

Japanese comedian dresses up as Eddie Murphy from BEVERLY HILLS COP and gets slammed for using blackface:
https://www.nytimes....ref=todayspaper
The article cites Momoiro Clover Z as coming under criticism for doing blackface in 2015. I don't recall hearing about that.
My question: has any H!P performer ever done blackface? All I can think of is Atsuko Inaba wearing the afro wig during an H!P concert in the early 2000s.

Interesting how that article kinda omits the opinion of other black people saying it was a tribute to Eddy Murphy and not intended as racism:

Not offhand I can recall, but they've done plenty of "whiteface" on Hello Morning. Japanese comedy uses that one a ton, usually with a blonde wig and giant fake nose.

Rest assured that the man defending it is in a very small minority. The average black person finds blackface very offensive.

I don't have the necessarity knowledge on the topic to judge that, but the article was about that Twitter discussion and I read a similar stance from at least 3 people.

Speaking of Japanese comedians, has anyone here heard of Naomi Watanabe? I have the feeling I've seen her in some show, but I'm not sure what.
There's an item on her in today's New York Times. She's supposed to be spending more time in New York.

I'm not sure where else to put this, but since today would have been the 90th birthday of manga/anime pioneer, Osamu Tezuka, I did a tribute to him on my film blog:
https://briandanacam...0-god-of-manga/
It covers a recent manga biography of Tezuka and a documentary about him.
