Anita Mui was referred to in her time as "the Madonna of the Far East." (She was five years younger than Madonna.) She was also a movie star. I think the first movie I saw her in was a Hong Kong superheroine movie called THE HEROIC TRIO (1993). Anita played Wonder Woman, Michelle Yeoh played the Invisible Woman--no relation to any American characters with those names--and Maggie Cheung played the Thief Catcher. Everyone reading this has to see this movie. There was a sequel, EXECUTIONERS. Anita also starred with Jackie Chan in DRUNKEN MASTER II and RUMBLE IN THE BRONX, with Jet Li in MY FATHER IS A HERO, and with Chow Yun-Fat in A BETTER TOMORROW III. And many other films. THE MAGIC CRANE is one of my favorites and she spends the film flying around on...a giant magic crane! Hong Kong movies of the early 1990s were the greatest.
Agreed! I loved HK movies in the 90's as well. I'm not sure what happened to them in the recent years...
I haven't see those movies though so I will watch them! She was a great actress. HK was really filled with lots of talented stars before. Most were required to be good at acting as well! Sure, they weren't song writers, but their performing skills were top notch as well, imo.
Stephen Chow has always been a favorite of mine, although many of jokes are hard to understand if you don't know Cantonese. There's just this really good slapstick nonsense in the comedy that is hard to translate. Unfortunately, a lot of his Western movies exclude this so I'm not too fond of his Western movies. The comedy just isn't as good. And now I've gotten off to a tangent!
I like Angela Chang/Zhang/whatever the fuck the romanization is.
I haven't listened to any Cpop in a long time. But I do remember these artists: Fairyland in Reality, Stephanie Sun (Sun Yan Zi), Jolin Tsai, Fish Leong, Jay Chou and S.H.E. I liked F.I.R. and Stephanie the most. I'm gonna go back and listen to them now.
I am not an expert on Chinese music at all! If you guys could recommend me songs from these artists, that would be great. I'm especially interested in Angela Chang, F.I.R. Stephanie Sun, and Fish Leong. I already like Jolin.
I do know Stephanie Sun's
cover of the Beatle's song Hey Jude, which I love. Her English voice is beautiful so I'd definitely love to hear more.
Btw, are any of those artists from mainland? I think most of these people are from Taiwan? Stephanie is from Singapore, I believe?
It's funny how so many of them seem to have western forenames. lol
I like Faye Wong's voice a lot, but I don't know much of her. (I just know her from Final Fantasy stuff)
Faye Wong is actually her Chinese name too, haha. I like her as well. She has a couple of other good songs. I guess Faye Wong is originally from mainland China, but she made her debut in HK. Here's her
cover of the Cranberrie's song "Dreams." She's very.. uhm.. eccentric here. But she was always known to be like that in HK, it's kind of funny she toned it down for the FF stuff and appears all normal.

OH, here's an artist I like a lot. And my parents did too. Sam Hui was a famous singer songwriter in the 70's and 80's. Here's one of his
songs with the translated lyrics in the video too. Ignore how badly that person spells words. I like how folk-y it sounds while being sweet and relaxing. He also has other songs which are funny.
