The episode doesn't air for the next 12 hours or so, but since I'll be on the way for most of the tomorrow I'm creating the thread in advance. Because I'll be on a business trip until late Friday evening I won't be able to start working on the sub before Saturday, but if the dialogues and signs scripts are ready when I'm back the episode shouldn't be released much later than the previous one. I should have Internet access in the hotel so I'll keep checking the thread whenever possible.

The premise of this thread is that you (yes, you!) can add any lines or make corrections wherever you wish, even if it's just one line. To put it one way, it's like the collaboration that goes on on a wiki, but without the wiki software. Or to put it another way, it's like the collaboration that'd go on on open source software.

There are [/will be] a lot of holes, but every little bit helps and I'm asking everyone here to expand this if they can. Don't worry about timing anything; we'll do that later. The timestamps on this are just rough guidelines to show where in the episode the lines should go.

I figure that the number that can half-ass understand what's going on is somewhat high, at least much higher than the number of people who have a full understanding and are able to take the time to do a full translation.

Just a few guidelines to make the process smooth:
Added: - If you're planning to spend more time translating a longer section of the episode, make a post saying which times are you covering (eg. 2:30 - 6:00) so someone doesn't double your work at the same time. Once you're done edit your post and paste the translation.
- If there's a longer gap between the dialogues, insert a new timestamp.
- If you're skipping one line in the middle of an otherwise translated dialogue, make sure to mark it (a bunch of "???" or "..." will do).
- For now, do not mark who says what unless necessary, it makes inserting the lines into a timed script harder.
- When you spot a mis-translation, correct it!
- Focus on getting the meaning accurate, don't worry if the translation becomes too wordy or awkward. Editors will fix that.
- Enjoy, because you're awesome for contributing even one line.

Plan for today's lesson:

1. Keep checking the general SJG thread where someone will hopefully post yt links after the show airs.
2. As Al suggested, create a quick and dirty translation of the whole episode. This is the stage where everyone is especially welcome to contribute.
3. Once that's done, Al goes over the script and rewrites it if necessary.
4. In the meantime, translate the complete opening credits. I know that majority of the names are the same from episode to episode, but as they keep moving them around having them all written out makes typesetting much easier.
5. Also translate the signs. Use common sense to determine which need translating.

The episode hasn't popped up on Youtube yet, and the last one never appeared in an HD version, so I can't do anything until I can see the episode. I'd appreciate anyone sending links my way when it does.

I manged to rip both of them, so I'll watch it and get started around dinner time. Hopefully something better will come out, because while it looks like the whole episode, it came out as two different file types (mp4 and flv) so I can't imagine that will be easy to work with.

Here's the first half, using that dodgy Russian link as the basis for the times. I'll continue with the second half later tonight.

Part 1

0:01

They’re called the Gluttony Girls. Because, you know, they’re gluttons.

0:05

If I win, bring back the tonkotsu!
Bring it on!
On!
Right!

0:11

Get set!
Go! Back to the starting line…

0:17

This is bad. That really slowed her down.

0:20

Hey! What the hell are you doing!?!
It’s yummy~!

0:25

That’s…

0:34

Not here!
Not here!
What the?!?
NOT HERE!!!
What’s wrong?
Henchman! It’s all your fault!
Eh?!?
I can’t find my mentaiko bread anywhere!
You took it, didn’t you?!?
I didn’t take it!
Liar!!!
That look on your face earlier said “It looks delicious!”
There wasn’t a “look.” I didn’t take it!
If you lie, the Devil will drag you down to Hell!
Please quiet down…
What are you, grade schoolers? We could hear you in the hallway.
I’m sorry, Aoyama-san.
Thank you for remembering my name.
But do you remember what I do here?
The Morality Squad, right?
Correct.

1:17

Name: Iroha Aoyama
Speaking of which, there’s something I need to discuss with you.
Kazuki-kun, what’s going on with your hair style?
Huh?
Your bangs are too long.
The back as well.
That’s not a man’s hair style.
It’s against the school regulations, isn’t it?
Ah, shut the hell up…
No need to talk about that crap…
What do you mean?
No one’s going to die if a few rules are ignored.
Do you really enjoy doing this?
From where I stand, you'd never understand my point of view.
Whatever. Same to you!
I can’t stand bitchy, stuck up girls like you…
Well you just came right out and said it… You must have mentaiko for brains!
“Mentaiko for brains?” I’ve got no idea what you’re talking about…

3:15

Well then, do you really want to do this?
There's nothing I'd enjoy more...

3:29

It’s all your fault!
You took my mentaiko bread!!!
I’m sorry my hair’s so long!
It’s long! Get a hair cut! This is about my bread!!!

3:44

Sayuri?
What’s she doing in a place like this?
Ah well…

4:02

Kazuki?
What’s he doing here?
My stomach’s hurting. Ah well…

4:19

Dammit!
The only solution for being pissed off is sleeping!
Ah! I remember!
My mentaiko bread… It wasn’t my henchman…
Nina-sama~~
I’m starving! I won’t make it until lunch…
You want some of this?
Really?
Yeah.
Yay! Thank you! Don’t mind if I do~
Mmm! Yummy!
It’s great, isn’t it?
I gave it to Sayuri!
I need to apologize to my henchman…

4:52

I…
I didn’t…
I didn’t take your stupid bread!
Dammit!
Dumbass… Dumbass! Dumbass!!! DUMBASS!!!
Looks like I got a little carried away…

5:33

Mmm! The first one of the day is the best!
I wonder what's going on?
Something is up in the teachers' room.
I wonder if something happened?
Is there another test thief?
That’s weird!
It’s not weird!
Totally weird!
Totally weird!
Daddy’s girl!
Daddy’s girl!
I’m not a daddy’s girl!!!
I swear… That’s not how to treat your friends.
When Nina was little, I got picked on a lot.
“Math dummy! Math dummy!” they’d say.
Eh? That’s a surprise.
When that happened, my big sis would be there for me.
Still nothing about your sister?
We don’t know anything…
I see… If you hear anything, let me know. I’m here to help.
Thank you.
I’ll definitely find her!
Hey, Nina! Head back to the classroom. We’re having a class meeting.
Eh? I guess something did happen.

6:43

Okay, everyone listen up!
Yesterday, a window was broken at the old school building.
It looks like it was vandalized…
A case!
I remember seeing Kazuki by the old building yesterday!
Huh!?!
I saw Sayu heading in there!
What?
It’s here, it’s here, it’s here, it’s here!!!
It’s my turn now!!!
This looks like another case!
I, Mami Shibuya, will find the culprit with my detective training!
You’re under arrest!~
Get over here, detective…
What? Wait…
Let me go! Let me go!!!
Sensei, please leave the rest to me.
Huh? Okay… It’s up to you now…
And now, I, Iroha Aoyama of the Morality Squad, will discover the culprit behind this.
Pain in the ass woman…
Sayuri…
Kazuki-kun…
You two were in the old building, weren’t you?
Yeah…
Yes.
Then what were you doing?
I was…
I can’t tell.
Because I was stressed out, I wrote all those bad things on the board.
I can’t reveal that…

8:27

Writing: Nina Machida Math KY Mentaiko sucks Mentaiko Bread!
I can’t let them know what I wrote on that board!
I can’t tell!
That mentaiko bread Nina-sama gave me made me sick…
I can’t tell them that I went to the toilet in the old building…
I can’t tell them…
I’m an idol!
Idols don’t go to the bathroom!
So you’re not talking…
I knew it… You’re both behind it then.
That’s not true…
Neither had anything to do with it.
Nina will cover for them!
Thank you! Even though it’s your fault…
Thank you! But it was Nina-sama’s fault…
Well then…
You two, prepare for battle…
Prepare!

9:35

Wait a second!
It’s the “Prisoner’s Dilemma.”
You…

Part 2:

0:04

Think about it carefully…
Hurry up and let’s have a talk, okay?
I’ll be waiting.

0:17

Sign: Supply Room
Dammit… What’s with that chick?!?
What should I do?

0:32

“The Prisoner’s Dilemma?” What’s that?
An easy way to explain it…
It's choosing between what's best for yourself, or choosing what's best for the group.
I don’t quite get it…
Irhoha explained it to Kazuki.

0:50

Your penalty will be suspension from school.
And of course you’ll have to make up all the work you miss…
Is this Hell?
Listen carefully…

1:05

Sign:
Top: Sayuri, Confess, Remain Silent
Left side: Kazuki, Confess, Remain Silent
Top boxes: 15 days and 15 days, Innocent and 30 days
Bottom boxes: 30 days and Innocent, 3 days and 3 days

So, if the two of you don’t tell us why you were in the old building,
You’ll both be suspended for three days…
Three days…
But…
If Kazuki-kun said Sayuri was behind it…
I’ll make sure you’re found innocent…
And she’ll get the full punishment.
She’ll be suspended for thirty days.
On the other hand…
If you don’t do anything,
And Sayuri says you did it,
Sayuri will be innocent,
Kazuki-kun will be suspended for thirty days.
You’re trying to confuse me!
Finally…
If you both blame each other,
You’ll both be suspended for fifteen days…
And that’s the position you’re in…
Carefully think it over.

2:21

Your penalty’s now in your hands…
The faster you tell the truth,
The faster you'll get out of here.

2:34

Sign: Boiler Room
What should I do?

2:39

Iroha said the exact same thing to Sayuri.
Do you mean?
Yes, this “Prisoner’s Dilemma” is to test their morals and see if they’ll betray each other.
That’s Iroha’s aim.
Kazuki is thinking about it with all his might.

3:04

WHAT SHOULD I DO???
If I don’t say anything, and I say Sayuri didn’t do it…
The culprit is Kazuki! I saw him!
Ah man, this isn’t a joke! I’ll be suspended for thirty days!
No way!
No way!!!
NO FREAKIN’ WAY!!!
But if I say Sayuri did it…
I’ll be innocent.
The worst that would happen is we’ll both be suspended for fifteen days, right?
It’s my best option, isn’t it?

3:41

Sayu will be thinking the same thing.
When you look at it mathematically,
The average penalty for not saying anything is 16.5 days.
But if you blame the other, the average is 7.5 days.

Sign (paper):
Top line: Sayuri\Kazuki, remain silent, accuse the other
Middle line: remain silent
Bottom line: accuse the other

Sign (graphic at the bottom of the screen):
Top line: Average Suspension Days
Middle line: If you remain silent, 16.5 days
Bottom line: If you accuse the other, 7.5 days

Of course the system benefits the people that accuse the other.
I see…
Their best option is to both remain silent and each get three days suspension.
But that’s only if neither of them talk.
They’d have to consider that the other would betray them to go free…
So it’s not that simple.
That’s the “Prisoner’s Dilemma.”
It sure is…
Actually, Iroha doesn’t even care which one the real culprit is.
When they give each other up, she knows she’ll still get the right one.
But the two of them…

4:50

What should I choose?
Sayuri could have done it…

5:08

What… What should I do?
Kazuki could have done it…

5:19

When forced into a corner, humans will always do what is best for themselves.
Just watch, those two will definitely accuse each other…
Iroha!
Fight me!
Fight?
Nina believes… Those two fight a lot, but their friendship will hold strong!
They won’t accuse each other!
The culprit is someone completely different.
Is that what you think?
I believe humans will readily betray each other.
Whatever, fight me!
If the two of them both maintain their innocence, Nina wins.
If they accuse each other, you win.
How about it?
The loser gets punished.
Nina will accept the same punishment as the two of them.
Fine. I accept.
Wait a moment!
I will stand with Iroha.
If Iroha loses, we’ll accept the same punishment.
It… doesn’t really matter. You can do what you want…
Ok.
The time limit is this evening.
How do you think they’ll answer then?
Okay…

6:54

Of course, no matter how I look at it, I should say Sayuri did it.
But…

7:06

I’ve thought so much about it, and I should just say Kazuki did it.
But I…

7:17

Well then, shall we hear the truth?
Your answers… Show them.

7:39

Sign:
Top: I didn’t do it.
Bottom: Sayuri Tachikawa didn’t do it either.

7:44
Sign:

Top: I didn’t do it.
Bottom: Kazuki Sato didn’t do it either.

Why?!?
If you accuse the other you can go free!
Are you okay with being suspended?
Sayuri, think about what he’s said about you. Accuse him!
I’ll give the two of you one more chance to answer…
Iroha, that’s playing dirty!
Those two know that they’re not each others’ opponents.
That’s the truth!
Yeah, they do fight a lot…
But, they’re also together a lot.
They’re bound to fight sometimes.
They fight…
They help each other…
That’s…
What real friends do.
Those two are the same.
Your… Precious friends.

9:07

Wait a moment!
I will stand with Iroha.
If Iroha loses, we’ll accept the same punishment.

9:18

You’re such fools…
But…
Thank you.
It’s great, isn’t it?
Yeah, really!
If Sayuri was suspended, there’s no way I’d be able to handle Mentaiko-Girl on my own. I couldn’t accuse her.
Lately, my grades are kind of low… I need to keep people with worse grades around so I don't drop in the rankings. So I didn’t accuse you!
What a beautiful friendship!
Wait a moment!
If neither of them did it…
Who is the real culprit?
Ah…
My bad!
It was… Nina!
Wha-?!?
Nina-sama did it?
I had gone up to the roof to nap that day…
When I remembered my henchman didn’t take my mentaiko bread.

10:34

I need to apologize to my henchman…
Heave ho!
Aw crap!

10:48

No way… How’d you forget that?
But that’s so Nina-sama-like!
Sine!
Cosine!
Mentaiko!
You can’t be forgiven that easily!
This still has to be resolved.
I sort of understand how you feel…

11:15

Well, well… Here we go!
One for you.
Enjoy!
Don’t forget what I said before.
You’re not getting off that easily.
Have a drink!
Ahhhh!!!
Nasty!
No way, no way, no way, no way!!!
It's 1000% ultra-super-bitter tea!
Here!
Nina-sama, have some!
What? No, no, no, no!
Wah!!!
Drink it Sayuri!
You jerk!!!
Here, drink it!

Iroha’s been raised by her grandmother.
Yeah, and her grandma was so strict, Iroha’s outlook on life become super strict.
I can see how that happened.

Well, that fits her perfectly!

I think the charts that Irohoa gives Sayu and Kazuki, and the one Nina draws are slightly different. Iroha's has the "confess" option, while Nina's says "accuse" instead.

I'm just curious, are you writing out the parts of the Japanese script yourself, or does the whole thing get posted online somewhere?

Of course, I write it out myself.

I assume that no one will take the trouble to write whole script because it is not necessary for Japanese to do it.
Just watching the video, we can enjoy it.

I always compare your script with YouTube version.
When I think that its translation is questionable or completely wrong, I put the part in Japanese.
So, if you think that it is hard to listen or understand Japanese and then you point it out,
I'll write it out in Japanese as soon as I check it.

P.S.
Please correct this.

Part 2
02:21 line 3
I’ll be waiting to talk to you about it…
→ ( I think that Aoyama didn't say it. Please check it again. )

After talk
line 6
神宮貴子(じんぐう たかこ)
→ ( TnB is right. It is not "Jinga" but "Jingu or Jinguu". Please rely on me. )

You would be amazed at how many people actually do this. There are a lot of Americans who will write out English scripts to American dramas...WHY they do it, I have no idea. But people do!

But anyway, your writing out parts in Japanese is a huge help! Thank you so much for taking the time to do it :)

I'm back from the trip and about to start with the timing. Thanks for your work everyone, it's great to come back and have everything prepared.

Masa, although I'm not translating myself, I know that your transcriptions are a great assistance for the translators. Thank you so much for helping out!

I didn't watch the episode yet, but from skipping through it there seem to be no opening credits? Just when we finally got the karaoke in! :dammit: I'll have to come up with some alternative for sticking the group credits in. Probably I'll just show them on top of the screen during the Review.

Man, they just keep getting more and more dialog heavy. Not too bad on the math front, but it looks like it'll be the wordiest one yet.

At ~360 lines, it is. At least it's mostly HS girl talk with occasional math, and not Mamoru Oshii-esque philosophical tirades. =3=

I apologize if this is really inconvenient when an all in one file comes out later =/

That's no big problem, since I need to do frame-accurate timing of each one of them anyway. But if someone could tell me the running time of the first part video it would help me estimate the times better. Nevermind, found it.

Do you need any of the other ending credits? They're the same as before but I can copy and paste in with the appropriate time stamps.
(...)
There's also a message at the end about goods being on sale. If you want a translation of that I can throw it in.

Thanks, don't need them though. The ending credits are at roughly the same times anyway, and I take back asking for all of them to be translated. :hahaha: As for the ending message, I'll have to blank it anyway so it doesn't interfere with the subs.

Very quiet thread this time.

I just set up and started the encoding jobs. Gonna hit the bed now though, because it's 3 AM. If I have time to review it before work and there are no errors then I'll upload it in some 5 hours. Otherwise it will have to wait until after work.

Sorry for the lateness. I had a busier weekend than I expected, and then typesetting all those charts was a pain in the hole. :nono:

That's strange. The opening credits were edited out of that version of the video. The one I used to translate it had the opening in there right after Yuu and the others put on their shades.

Yeah, it did seem weird that they were not there, especially with the return of the teacher as well as Kikka in a major role. I did look around though and all versions I could find were like this - probably coming from one and the same source. I even correctly guessed the spot where the opening was. Pasting it from one of the previous eps wouldn't be a huge problem, but then it wouldn't be accurate with the actors' names. Oh well, the episode is released, and we can worry about fixing that in version 2 if we ever do that.

With hi-def raw for episode 3 still missing after over a week I'm starting to doubt they even exist at all. Maybe whoever used to capture them lost their interest with the show. The few obscure sites that had the uncompressed (not re-compressed, precisely) 1440x720 files for episodes 1 and 2 the day it aired have only uploaded the YT files for eps 3 and 4, which seems pretty desperate for them. Maybe they have them on their pee-two-pee networks (Winny?), but I'm completely out of touch with that and have little time to research.

A couple of us ripped the version that was on youtube in two parts which has the opening for the episode if you need it.

And it's strange how few sources there are for the show since most other shows and HP appearances still get uploaded.
