Did you realise we could be halfway through the season already? I just did. And we're awesome for keeping up the pace.

I added a new guideline in the third quote below, please have a look at it as it will help me a lot.

The premise of this thread is that you (yes, you!) can add any lines or make corrections wherever you wish, even if it's just one line. To put it one way, it's like the collaboration that goes on on a wiki, but without the wiki software. Or to put it another way, it's like the collaboration that'd go on on open source software.

There are [/will be] a lot of holes, but every little bit helps and I'm asking everyone here to expand this if they can. Don't worry about timing anything; we'll do that later. The timestamps on this are just rough guidelines to show where in the episode the lines should go.

I figure that the number that can half-ass understand what's going on is somewhat high, at least much higher than the number of people who have a full understanding and are able to take the time to do a full translation.

Just a few guidelines to make the process smooth:
Added: - If you edit your previous post to correct the translation, mark it either by bolding the new version or striking out the old one. This will help update the timed script without missing anything.
- If you're planning to spend more time translating a longer section of the episode, make a post saying which times are you covering (eg. 2:30 - 6:00) so someone doesn't double your work at the same time. Once you're done edit your post and paste the translation.
- If there's a longer gap between the dialogues, insert a new timestamp.
- If you're skipping one line in the middle of an otherwise translated dialogue, make sure to mark it (a bunch of "???" or "..." will do).
- For now, do not mark who says what unless necessary, it makes inserting the lines into a timed script harder.
- When you spot a mis-translation, correct it!
- Focus on getting the meaning accurate, don't worry if the translation becomes too wordy or awkward. Editors will fix that.
- Enjoy, because you're awesome for contributing even one line.

Plan for today's lesson:

1. Keep checking the general SJG thread where someone will hopefully post yt links after the show airs.
2. As Al suggested, create a quick and dirty translation of the whole episode. This is the stage where everyone is especially welcome to contribute.
3. Once that's done, Al goes over the script and rewrites it if necessary.
4. In the meantime, translate the complete opening credits. I know that majority of the names are the same from episode to episode, but as they keep moving them around having them all written out makes typesetting much easier.
5. Also translate the signs. Use common sense to determine which need translating.

I'll post a collage of signs requiring translation once I get my hands on the episode.

I'm going out of town tomorrow morning, but as long as I get the episode today I should be able to take care of the main script. Making corrections to it shouldn't be an issue since I should have internet access.

Okay, getting the episode now with some help from masa. It looks like a good site to get the show from, but I think you may need a Japanese email address to use it, since I tried with 3 different addresses and none were allowed.

I won't be able to get started probably until 9pm, since I have a work function this evening, but I'll try to get as much done as I can before tomorrow.

Maybe it is tracking IP addresses then and only ones in Japan can use it.

Either way, I have an episode to work from now, but we will still need to look for one to use for the subtitles since the one I've got is squashed into a 4 by 3 aspect ratio.

Still no sign of the episode on the sites I keep an eye on, so can't start any work yet. I also should have said that I'll be having a guest over between Friday and Sunday, so this may hinder the amount of time I'll have to work on the sub. Don't want to give any estimates because I'm not sure how it will turn out myself, so let's just stick to the good old "when it's done". :duke:

What's the actual resolution of the video? It may very well be usable if high enough. In most players you can check by right-click on the video -> Properties -> Details.

It's 720x480.Doesn't look bad when I readjust it in VLC media player.

Anyway, getting started now. It's not as dialog heavy as the previous episodes and there are some music only montages, so that's not too bad. Still will probably take a few hours though since I'll be having dinner while I work on it.

Man, the recap is actually getting to be a pain in the butt since I have to find the moments in the previous episode to find out exactly what I wrote. Anyway, I'll post it in sections as I get parts done, but the times will be consistent with the full episode, as this one has both full opening and ending credits.

Recap:

0:00
What’s going on with your hair style?
Do you really enjoy doing this?
You must have mentaiko for brains.
Do you really want to do this?
You’re both behind it.

0:12

I’ll be suspended for thirty days!
No way! No way!
Think about what he’s said about you.
Accuse him!
Are you okay with being suspended?

0:22

They’re also together a lot.
They’re bound to fight sometimes.
What a beautiful friendship!

Up until the opening credits-

0:34

Greetings!
How’s everyone at Edogawa Northern High School?
I’m doing well.
It’s been three weeks since I’ve come to this school.
Every day is glorious.

0:46

My classmates are really kind to me.
Who are you?
Mentaiko break!
Starting today you’ll be Nina’s henchman!
Kyaa~
Anyway, the girls are all really cute and graceful.
Hot!

0:58

The curriculum is kind of unique actually, but no problem.
Well, that’s how it is.
I’m really, really having a good time.
I wanna go back…

1:19

Henchman!
So this is where you’ve been.
I’ve been looking all over for you.
Go get my mentaiko bread!!!
What are you talking about?
Wouldn't it just have been faster to buy it yourself instead of searching for me?
Huh?
You back talking me?!?
No I’m not talking back…
Whatever, let’s go!
But…
They’ll be sold out of mentaiko bread!
Someone save me…
Hurry!

1:47

Sensei!
Please…
Transfer me to a new school.
What’s wrong, Kazuki?
I’m at my limit.
Please, sensei, do whatever you can to get me transferred out of here.
To a school without math maniacs and all these heartless girls...
Ones that I won't be forced to buy stuff for...
Kazuki…
Your teacher…
Holds himself back, every day.
In our school, everyone is so cute…
I want to date all of those girls.
My unrequited passion…
Up until now…

You’re the one that can live my dream, Kazuki!!!
But I…
Freedom to love!!!
You can do it!
So don’t say something so foolish as “I want to transfer!”
Well, your teacher needs to go and get ready…
But the truth is, it's just too much trouble to arrange your transfer! Ha, ha, ha!

3:12

Kazuki-kun.
Good morning.
You’re getting along at this school, aren’t you?
Umm…
For my whole life, up until now, the thing I’ve loved most is Gödel’s incompleteness theorems.
That splendid paradox is absolutely amazing, isn’t it?
Um… Uh… I don’t quite get it…
But you know…
I think I’ve come to love Kazuki-kun even more than that!
I love you, Kazuki-kun!
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAA~?!?!?
Yuri!
Oh crap…

5:03

It’s cool if you like him.
But he’s my henchman.
When we’re in school, he belongs to me.
That’s all!
You’re too slow with that mentiako bread, dumbass!

5:22

Congratulations on your confession!
Thank you!
Yeah, awesome!
You did great!
Ah… I want to give my heart to someone…
From the moment Kazuki-kun transferred here,
Like gazing into the sweet innocent eyes of a puppy!
I, Yuri…
Have fallen head over heels!

(here her words match the text)
From that day, the beating of my heart, Began to ring like a bell!
Hang in there~ I got myself, A boyfriend! (“Yuri” is signed next to it)
Disgusting!
What are you doing?
Get down! Get down!
What do you know about that girl in the middle?
Eh?
Ah… That’s Yuri Uehara.
People call her the “Cute Angel!”
“Cute Angel?”
You mean she’s… C-ute?
Yeah.
Well, I guess she’s pretty cute.
The nearby boy’s school has a fan club dedicated to her.
Well, I’m just as cute!
Supposedly, there's a 100% chance that no boy could resist her confession.
Well, I’m cute enough that they’d stand the same chance~

Should I enter her fan club?
But…
You better be careful.
Eh?
She’s really pure, but she’s always confessing her love and goes out with guys.
And soon after she says, “I think math is better than you!” and dumps them.
That’s…
You better watch your ass!
What the hell is up with this school and the crazy girls?!?
Okay, time to start homeroom!
Okay!

7:02

It’s time to make a new seating order.
Seating order…
Alright!
After all, we’ve got Kazuki in this class now.
Let’s freshen the place up!
Yay!
Yay!

It's taking longer than I hoped. There's so much fast speaking in the episode I'm having to listen to some lines a dozen times...

Up until the second CM break-

7:26

It’s great, isn’t it? Confessing your love!
Yeah! It just cries out “youth!”
I wish I could confess to someone!
You mean like Nina-sempai, for example!
Kyaa~! That would be impossible!
It’s not impossible!
Impossible, impossible, impossible!

7:44
Let’s drink morn
ing coffee~
Together~
Sensei… You’re out of tune.
You’re too strict with my singing.
Ah! I heard about it!
Someone confessed their love to Kazuki-kun?
That travelled fast!
What are you doing playing it off?
I figured you’d be more exited!
I could care less about that stuff…
I see.
What about you…
Is there someone you like?
No damn way!
Ah, math, mentaiko bread, and tonkotsu ramen are all I need!
That’s so like you…
Well…
You don’t have time for much else while you search for your older sister, right?
Yeah…
Ah! I forgot to get my mentaiko bread!
I better go before it’s sold out!
If you get a boyfriend, introduce him to me.
Thank you.
Her sister, huh?

9:03

She’s sleeping again…
Hey, that’s my bag!
Give it back!
Eh?
It’s mine!
Let my pillow go!
Kya~
It’s a case!
You two…
Are together?!?
You’re wrong!!!
Nina… Please fight me!
For Kazuki’s sake!
Huh?
Ah…
I’m hungry.
Time for tonkotsu ramen!
Are you running away?
“Tonkotsu,” she says…
Hey, wait!

10:05

She eats and then falls asleep…
She’s like a caveman!
Okay, time to make the new seating order.
Sensei~
Would you like it if I made the new seating chart?
Eh?
You’re thinking “What’s the best way to do it?”
Holding a lottery would be the fairest way…
Isn’t that so?
C…Cute…
Uehara… Teacher will leave it to you…
Good luck…
Okay!
Good luck…

And up until the next CM break-

10:47

To help things go smoothly, I’ve got these three boxes.
Pick a ball from whichever box you like to determine your seat number, please.
The first one to pick is…
Hmm…
Who should I pick?
Of course we should give Kazuki-kun the honor of picking first.
Please go first~
Y-Yes…
Which should I choose?
The first one, I guess…
Box “A,” is it?
Number six, huh?
Okay, thanks!
Now then, everyone else please come pick.
Okay~
Kazuki-kun. Yuri wants to always be by your side.
Nina-sama!
Let’s go together!
Being next to Nina-sama is the best!
Twenty!
All the way in the back!
That’s great!
I got number sixteen.
I’m ten.
Number one. That’s all the way in front…
I’ve got nine!
I’m fifteen.
Well, I guess I should pick one too…
Kazuki-kun chose “A,” so I’ll pick from “C.”
I hope I get a good seat.
Wait a sec!
What?
Isn’t this lottery kind of strange?
What do you mean?
It’s strange!
The balls taken from box “A” are 10, 16, 20.
They’re all even numbers.
Box “B” had 1, 9, 15.
They’re all odd.
So, what does it mean?
What’s wrong with that?
It’s too much to be a coincidence.
You’re up to something.
There’s nothing going on!
What’s your problem with it?
Just what’s wrong here…
It’s here! It’s here! It’s here! It’s here!
Now it’s my turn!
Okay, how about a fight?
Fight?
Yes.
If you can prove this lottery has been tampered with, Nina wins.
If you can’t, Yuri wins.
I’m the former math referee.
In the absence of the current math referee, the previous one is able to take her place.
I’ll judge this match.
I’m fine with it.
But, if I win, I get the seat next to Kazuki-kun.
How great! Youth!
Excuse me!
What about how I feel?
Well, if Nina wins…
You can have the rear-most seat next to the window.
You’ll get seat number sixteen.
It’s farthest away from the teacher and he can't see you, perfect for sleeping.
Good with me.
Well then, the battle is decided!
The loser gets punished!
Yay~
Of course they’d get excited over this…

14:36

Starting now…
Nina versus Yuri.
Let the math battle begin.
I can’t lose.
To become the Math Boss.
To find out what happened to my big sis…
Yuri’s goal was to get a seat next to my henchman.
But how could she do that with this lottery?
Nina…
Are you good enough to figure out what I’ve done?
So what strange thing happened during it?
Yeah, Kazuki-kun picked first, and then the rest of us picked after…
What did you just say?
Kazuki-kun picked first.
My henchman went first?
Then…
Why would he need to go first?
Ah!

Posted 09 February 2012 - 06:18 AM

And here's the last of it.

16:22

I’ve got it!
Yuri’s goal was to use a certain box which would give her the best chance at sitting next to Kazuki.
Don’t just make up the details!
I’m not making it up! I’ll prove it now.
Okay?
First of all, in a normal lottery, the total number of ways for my Henchman and Yuri to pick seats is 190.
The number of ways for the two of them to get adjacent seats is 16.
So the probability that they'll be next to each other is 16 over 190. That comes out to approximately 8%.

Yeah, I get it!
And next?
In order to improve her odds…
Yuri prepared three boxes.
Inside these three boxes are,
“A” is even numbers.
“B” is odd numbers.
And “C” has the balls with prime numbers on them.
And now I’ll use colors to make understanding them easier.
Prime numbers are blue.
The non-prime odd numbers are yellow.
And the non-prime even numbers are pink.
This entire plan is based on my henchman picking first.
First, she lets him pick from whichever box he wants.
This time, my henchman picked from “A.”
She already knew how those even numbers would be arranged.
Yuri saw and chose “C.”
And this is how the blue numbers are arranged.
In this case, the number of ways for the two of them to pick seats is 72.
The number of ways for them to pick adjacent seats is 11.
The probability that they'll be next to each other jumps up to 15%.

I see… Of course!
By the same idea, if he had chosen “B,”
She would have picked from box “A’s” pink even numbers.
This one comes out to 11%
Again, had he chosen “C” instead, the box with odd numbers,
She’d pick from the pink even numbers.
That chance increases up to 15%
And that’s how Yuri fixed it in her favor.
You only pretended it was fair.
How about it?
The trick you used…
I’ve proven how you did it.
Clever as always… Nina…
Everything you’ve said…
Is true.
I lose.
This battle is over!
Nina wins!
Sine!
Cosine!
Mentaiko!
Umm…
It’s not like there’s much of a big difference between 8% and 15% is there?
What the hell are you saying?
That’s just like a pu-re mai-den’s heart!
You don’t get it?
It might not be much…
But cheating is cheating, right?
You saw right through me, Nina.
Well then, how about your punishment?
Eh?

20:20

This school is so weird…
You think Yuri’s a real beauty.
You’re upset you didn’t get to sit next to her!
You’re subtle… About like the smell of tonkotsu ramen.
Huh? What about tonkotsu’s smell?
I meant exactly what I said!
I’ll dump a bowl of tonkotsu ramen on your head!
Really?
You bet I will!
Nina-sama~!
It’s ready!
Okay?
And so…
This time’s punishment is…
Right here!
It’s slimy!
A CATFISH?!?

21:23

So this is my new school…
Wait for me-ow! Meow-meow!

22:43

Everyone, how are you? Math-loving Nina here!
And that Nina-loving Sayuri here!
Did you enjoy the character we introduced this time?
Suugaku Joshi Gakuen has a lot more things for you to looks forward to…

First of all, the chances of her drawing a number sequentially next to Kazuki’s in a normal lottery is 1 in 190.
The chance of getting a number of a seat around his area is 1 in 16.
So getting a seat around him is 16 over 190, and it comes out to 8%

   確率 = probability

line 27~29
Using this method, there a 1 in 72 chance of being sequentially next to him,
And a 1 in 11 chance of being around his seat.
With this, the chance that Yuri and my henchman would be near each other is now 15%
 → この場合は、二人の席の(すべての)組み合わせは72通り。
   二人が隣り合わせになる組み合わせは11通り。
   召使いと優梨が隣り同士になる確率は、約15%にはね上がるってこと。

Edit by aine: masa used his time machine to start translating before the show even appeared on the net. Or maybe he just watched it while it aired.

I wish I had the DeLorean.

I can watch the show while it airs.
So, composing a new thread before it begins is very helpful to me.

Lucky you. =3= Until recently we had no need for advance threads since we would usually get to watch it at least 12 hours later, but I'll keep that in mind and make new thread before the show airs from now on.

Hopefully the links Al posted will last until after I'm back from work so I can start working on timing. Although I do have a lot of cleaning to do before our guest comes over tomorrow. :hahaha:

Thank you for your hard work!

But I think that both of math parts would need more corrections because combination is strictly math term.

I know that both scripts you made is not exact.
How should I explain it in English...? I wonder if anyone knew it... :cryalot:

We have a couple of math experts. Maybe they can explain it better in English. I will read about combinations and see if I can word it more correctly.

Edit: Okay, I think I understand the idea of combinations a little better. I changed the lines to use the specific term.

Also, the youtube rip is up on H!O.

The video quality of the yt/h!o rip makes it unusable. :nono: It's also stripped of both the opening and ending credits. I'll use it for timing still, but unless something better pops up I'm gonna have to put the release on an indefinite hold.

I still have that 4:3 version of the episode.

And here's a dailymotion link that says it's in HD.

I also should have said that I'll be having a guest over between Friday and Sunday, so this may hinder the amount of time I'll have to work on the sub. Don't want to give any estimates because I'm not sure how it will turn out myself, so let's just stick to the good old "when it's done". :duke

Just a reminder since Al said on H!O the episode would be released on schedule.
But I think it's unlikely. We're showing someone around Dublin and fitting as much as we can in 2 days. ;/

I just hope aine can cram it in somehow so we won't be delayed next week too. :cryalot:
