Just popping in here real quick to let you guys know I'm not ignoring the suggestions you've all made; I just haven't had time to get around to them.

But after looking up the various Sailor Moons, I guess I'm a bit confused about the continuity of the musicals. Do they flow into one another from one Sailor Moon actress to the next? Because looking at the outfits that are used for each Sailor Moon, I noticed they all have, for instance, the Eternal Sailor Moon outfit. So while I'm thinking the musicals don't follow the anime series in terms of storyline, I'm still confused as to how each Sailor Moon actress change fits into the continuity of the musicals. Are each actresses portion of the storyline treated as independent sections of the story, or does the storyline pick up where the last actress left off?

Anza also played Eponine in Les Miz japanese cast, just before Miyuki.

That's so sad v.v

For my part, one of my favorite musical is Kakyuu-Ouhi Kourin (777th show), because it's just made of awsomeness between the Stars version and Eien Densetsu. But also early Marina Moon with Ono Hikari (<3) musicals are very good, except the 10th anniversary one.

^For the Sailor Moon parts:

Only the first stage with Anza properly follow the anime version, but with a few changes (No Pluto and Saturn in the S version, not the exacts same villains), with the addition of Eien Densetsu, which is an extented version of Stars, if I could say it this way.

For Fumina and Miyuki, they got original storylines (Kaguya Shima and Vampire Act).

It's only Marina that got to redo the «original» anime stories that Anza did.

As for the costumes, well, the Eternal Sailor Moon outfit is only there for the last numbers, and for the encore. Everything is pretty mixed up XD.

Miyuki's musicals are the only ones with any continuity and have to be watched in order since they can be really confusing. The others can all be watched seperately since they're not really connected.

The cast changes have no effect on the plot. The first Moon, Anza, was playing the character as the anime was actually airing on TV, so her musicals essentially follow the anime series chronology. I can't remember why the R/Black Moon storyline wasn't made into a musical during her time, but for whatever reason it didn't happen. Her last musicals (Eien Densetsu and its revisions) were made after the end of the anime, so they came up with a semi-original storyline - a combination of the Sailor Stars plot mixed with characters from the very first season Dark Kingdom stuff.

At that point the powers that be decided it was time for a new, fresh, young cast, and basically everyone left. This is the only time that this really happened - afterwords when Moons changed, many other cast members stayed on for a while. A new Moon was chosen (Hara Fumina) and an entire new cast came along. Her first musical was another mash-up of anime/manga story arcs that didn't work as well as Eien Densetsu. Most of the characters were recast for her second musical Kaguya Shima Densetsu which was an entirely original storyline.

After the Kaguya revision, Fumina left and Kanbe Miyuki was cast as the new moon. Miyuki's musicals were also original storylines, but for the first time myu history, each of her musicals were connected. I.e. you had to see them in order to understand the story. Other than Miyuki's musicals, you can easily watch any of the others out of order, and you can watch Miyuki's before, after, or in between any of the others if you wanted.

After Miyuki left, Kuroki Marina was cast as the new moon. They basically started over from the beginning, following the anime/manga "seasons" starting with R/Black Moon. The revision of her Sailor Stars musical, Kakyuu Ouhi Kourin, uses the same basic plot as Eien Densetsu. Her last musicals were remakes of the Kaguya Shima Densetsu storyline.

As for the different Moon forms, after the anime/manga finished they tended to use all forms within each musical probably for the sake of flashy effect - also the Eternal Moon costume is very bulky, so they saved that for the climactic scenes. Since the Anza musicals aired alongside the anime/manga, she gained the different forms just as Sailor Moon did in the show/manga.

Unlike the anime and manga, Sailor Moon doesn't stick to her latest upgraded form per musical. She almost always starts in Standard Moon form, transforms into Super Moon somewhere in the middle, and appears as Eternal Moon somewhere for the final battle. The rest of the senshi, however, always appear in Super form in the musicals (save for, of course, the ones that were made before Super Form existed).

Kodansha is publishing the first Sailor V volume in September in the US, in case anyone is interested in reading it. I'm definitely going to go buy it. They plan on releasing the rest of it as well as the Sailor Moon manga as well.

Thank you! All of this was very helpful to know, and I can't wait to watch the musicals. I'll admit that I've never watched a musical before (other than bits and pieces of bad ones just 'cause they were bad), so this'll be interesting and I'm looking forward to it. Kodansha's news release about it

They're going to follow the format of the 2003 releases that had the new covers drawn for them. And an interview where they say the new manga will stay true to the original. I'm pretty excited.

Looks like Kodansha also picked up Love Hina and Tokyo Mew Mew. A lot of titles are up for grabs since Tokyo Pop declared bankruptcy and shut down in May.

You know there are all these male-oriented super hero/comic book movies coming out in the US? It makes me wish that Japan had a film industry on the scale of Hollywood so we could have a quality Japanese super hero equivalent.

Well, they are going to do a remake of Akira in the US. I've never seen/read it, but from what I've heard they're already doing a good job of butchering it.

Last I heard, Akira had been scrapped.

There was also talk about a SM movie ages ago. Apparently Sigorney Weaver was a huge fan and wanted to play Queen Beryl.

Come to think of it, I think there was also a failed attempt at a live action US version before the Japanese version.

That was a failed TV Pilot by Saban. Just cause they messed with Power Rangers, it doesn't mean they can mess with an anime. Image

And Al it wasn't Sigorney Weaver, it was Geena Davis that proposed the Live Action sailormoon series and wanted to play Queen Beryl.

Speaking of which: The compete live action series is coming out as a box set.

It'll have all the episodes, episode zero, the special act epilogue, and the Kirari Super Live for 31,000 yen (only 22,000 from Amazon).

I hated Kirari Super Live, as it turned out to be Kirari Super Lipsynched. >.> I liked PGSM but Myu has a nostalgia connected to it that PGSM just doesn't have.

After the nightmares of Dragon Ball Z, Chun Li, and Avatar (and yes, I realize this is an American cartoon but whatever), I do not want Hollywood touching Sailor Moon. And yes, it was Geena Davis

My nostalgia for Sailor Moon carries over into PGSM, though not as powerfully. In my childhood experience, the anime is canon and the manga is a nice supplement and PGSM is a kind of campy remake. I love them all though.

Sera Myu, on the other hand, is a completely new thing to me so I can sort of take it or leave it.

Actually, my first memory of Sera Myu was in high school around 1996. Children, this was when the internet was a new thing and my friend discovered and printed out (in black and white) a picture of one of the shows. I was horrified. I thought it was bad cosplay and I hated the overly huge and fussy costumes. I thought most of them were ugly. Etc etc. So if there IS any nostalgia for Sera Myu, it is my intial hate for it.

If it wasn't for Sera Myu, I wouldn't be a Morning Musume fan. They go hand in hand for reals!

But anyway, PGSM was mostly handled by Naoko as they stuck more closely to the manga then the anime.

I hope after the manga get republished the anime soon follows. I'm still waiting to see Sailor Stars subbed. Image And my bootlegs don't count because the stupid bootleggers forgot an episode, the bastards.

The recent Gantz movies in Japanwere pretty high budget/had lots of special effects. I personally haven't seen them but I hear they're good. I don't think they were Hollywood level expensive, but they had more action/SFX than most Japanese films. I'd be happy if they did something like that for Sailor Moon in Japan. Or even something like the Cutey Honey movie a few years back.

The only way I'd ever go for a Hollywood version is if they handled it in a similar fashion to something like X-men, where they took the themes, basic plot ideas, and character personalities from the comics, but generally made them feel a little more realistic for a film by toning down the comic book cheesiness and over the top storylines. Unfortunately I really could only see it going down like Dragonball.

I would love to see the live action series tackle the rest of the series, but they'd have to come back with a completely new cast which is kind of sad :( Other than that though, I think the main thing standing in the way of a Sailor Moon revival is a lack of new plot lines. If Naoko started writing manga again, that would be one thing, but otherwise there's only so many ways you can rehash the same stories. I think that was even a factor in the musicals coming to an end - by the time Marina graduated, she had redone almost all of the anime/manga plots as well as Fumina's original musical. Unless they were going to start creating original stories again, she probably would have ended up doing remakes of the Miyuki Dracul musicals.

Damn I don't think it works anymore now. And Rika would make a terrible Neptune personality wise.

Takahashi, Risa, Reina, Sayumi, Aika, Mizuki, Erina, Riho, Suzuki.

= ?????

If you take all the MM AND OGs though

Moon = Abe?

Mercury = Konno

Mars = Reina??

Jupiter = Yossi? Ogawa?

Venus = Sayumi or Yaguchi?

Neptune = Goto Maki

Uranus = ????

Pluto = Iida

The only one I know for sure is Saturn = Riho. She seems part cyborg.

People always used to choose Tsuji and Kago for Moon/Venus xD

I can't remember if we had to use OG's or not back in the day. I think these days we'd have to expend it to all-H!P. Of course in reality if it ever happened, you know they'd just cast Takahashi as Moon and Risa as Tuxedo Kamen and randomly fill in such a way that Reina and Riho got the rest of the lines.

My ideal cast, mainly limited to MM girls, because otherwise I had like 3 choices for each role. Can you tell I have too much free time at work some days? I based it on voice type/skill + ability to pull of character personality + looks.

Eien Densetsu/Kakyuu Ouhi Kourin lineup (one of my favorite storylines)

Moon - Eri

Mercury - Mizuki

Mars - Risa

Jupiter - Kanon (or Aika)

Venus - Sayu

Chibimoon - Miyamoto Karin (egg)

Uranus - Yossi

Neptune - Takahashi

Pluto - Kaori

Saturn - Riho

Star Fighter - Miki

Star Maker - Mako

Star Healer - Mari

Kakyuu - Maeda Yuki

Galaxia - Yuko

Beryl - Nacchi

Galaxia's senshi - Kei (could also see her as a good Beryl), Rika, Reina, Tsuji

The generals - Aika (or switch out Kanon), Koharu, Erina, Mano (They don't get a cool By Heaven type song because it would be too awful. I threw in Mano because I ran out of people >.>)

Tuxedo Kamen - Shirota Yuu. Yes, he's going to come back randomly and it's going to be strange but also good.

Sayu as Moon with Riho as Chibimoon would be adorable, but I couldn't take that much of Sayu's voice. Kago is another perfect Moon for me, but I excluded anyone totally out of H!P with no realistic expectation of ever being able to come back (Asuka, Aya, Sayaka, Kago, Maki, Konno). My other favorite storyline is the Mugen arc, and Maki would have made a great Mistress 9. I could see Takahashi as a good Kaolinite too.

Kamei as Sailor Moon? Is this because she cosplayed as her once? See, I cannot separate the girls' personalities from the characters so, I just cannot ever see Abe as Queen Beryl or Kago as anyone on the side of good

So now that Tsuji is a mother, I can see her as Moon. Goto would make a good Mars or any of the sexy-older-villainesses because she always trotted about with her boobs out too. I can see Risa playing a boy's role better because her voice is a bit deeper.

And, actually, you know who would made a decent Neptune looks-wise? Ishiguro Aya.

I didn't know that happened! Now I must find pictures. I chose Kamei as Moon because she has a high pitched but pretty voice. She also can do cute without being annoying. Tsuji and Reina both have good voices for Moon, but are both annoying when they do cute. In my opinion, of course. I also think Kamei could do a job of playing all the Moon roles - Serneity and such. I think Kago would be a terrible villian because of her voice, unless she was one of those cutesy ones like Mimette, Palla Palla, Cere Cere, or Sailor Iron Mouse. Even though Kago's "sexy bomb/rebel" has come out lately she still has a bit of that ditzy cute personality. But I did have more of a Momusu/W era Kago in mind xD

I see Abe as an awesome Beryl because she can do a very nice mature singing voice without being too manly-sounding, and she does lovely high notes. See: Kaze no Shijin from Kakyuu Ouhi Kourin. Besides Beryl, especially in Eien Densetsu/Kakyuu Ouhi, is more "misunderstood" than Pure Evil. They play up the unrequited love between her and Endymion, and I can see her doing that nicely.

Goto would make a good Mars or any of the sexy-older-villainesses because she always trotted about with her boobs out too. I can see Risa playing a boy's role better because her voice is a bit deeper.

I can't see Maki as any of the inner senshi anymore because of her age - she looks particularly mature and sexy, while Risa to me still looks fairly teenaged because of the way she's always styled. Mars does have a lot of sex appeal in the manga, I had more of the anime/musical version in mind. I could also see Risa in a boy's role, as Jupiter, or even as Uranus with Takahashi as Neptune.

And, actually, you know who would made a decent Neptune looks-wise? Ishiguro Aya.

Agreed, looks and voice. I think she could play a villian really well too.
