I am filling that cake with disdain. Or just lemon curd. They taste the same.

That won't be an issue. The papers would likely use your real name, which I won't know. I hate all strangers by default, so problem solved.

Someone should probably talk about movies.

Just got back from the Thing "pre-make." Not horrible but nothing close to Carpenter's amazing movie and at least it ultimately ties directly into that version even though it flirts with being a remake for a bit of the film. The overuse of CG sucked though, considering just how amazing the practical effects of the 30 year old version still are.

Still, it was cute watching MEW channel her inner Ellen Ripley.

OK! I saw lots o' movies recently, so I'll give my opinion of them.

Real Steel - I've heard it's not very accurate to the original story, but I haven't read it, so I didn't notice. It was kind of awesome and made me question why I don't like boxing more. Probably because it doesn't have enough robots in real life. I liked how the future setting is not at all futuristic except for the presence of robot boxers. I'm not sure if it made sense, but I liked it. A-

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works - I watched this as a quick refresher to prepare for the new Fate/Zero series. It had some great action scenes, but felt very compressed, which is was. I'm not sure if I recommend it or not, but I definitely recommend F/Z, which is now on ep 3. B

Darkman - Hmm... Not bad, not necessary, I'd say. There are too many others like it, which may not have been true at the time. Has some amusing lines. B

Hell Night - As early '80s slasher movies go, it was probably pretty good. It almost breaks out of the formula a couple times, but doesn't really. C+

X-men: First Class - You've probably seen this. If not, you can rent it now, so you should. A

The Troll Hunter - Another fake documentary, but so cool, I wish it wasn't. Available on Netflix instant. A-

Has anyone ever heard of the movie "Grave of the Fireflies?" ;www; It was so beautifully done and historically accurate. Those of us who love Japanese culture and like animation should see it if they ever get a chance. :) It's sad, but lovely.

Been on a bit of a spree:

The Ginger Snaps trilogy- A great take on werewolves. The first was amazing and the other two were different enough to stay enjoyable.

The modern Gamera trilogy- I watched these long ago, but picked them up cheap on blu-ray. Absolutely love them, and it's great to see all the "before they were famous" actors in it, like a young Yukie Nakama and Ai Maeda, but the subtitling was the worst I've ever seen on a professional product.

Undead or Alive- Pretty stupid but entertaining wild west zombie comedy with some decent gore.

Premonition- Interesting Japanese horror movie about a cursed newspaper that predicts peoples' deaths. Like Early Edition with less cats and more corpses (I'm probably the only person that remembers that show).

Gantz- Pretty cool imagining of the manga. Nowhere near as messed up, but I liked what made it on screen.

Trigun: Badlands Rumble- The first Trigun animation in over a decade. Great refresher to the series. Vash is still a tard and Wolfwood is still the man.

The Wicker Man- I'd been hearing how delightfully bad it was and decided to watch it. Mostly bad, very little delight.

Paranormal Activity 2- Hated the first one which was basically "Dumb people making stupid decisions: the movie," but part 2 was quite a bit more interesting. The doggy was so brave. Heard okay stuff about 3, but I'd rather watch it alone at home instead of surrounded by retards at the theater.

I discovered a Japanese movie made in 1952 called FUTARI NO HITOMI (aka GIRLS HAND IN HAND) that pairs postwar recording star Hibari Misora with former American child star, Margaret O'Brien. It's the first Japanese film I've seen quite like this--and I doubt there are any others. A lot of it is in English, accompanied by Japanese subtitles although the Japanese language scenes don't have English subs. Still, there was enough English spoken to enable non-Japanese speakers to follow the plot. Some of you may know O'Brien from her 1940s movies: MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS (where she played Judy Garland's sister), LITTLE WOMEN (she played Beth) and THE SECRET GARDEN. She made this film after her child star career was over. She and Misora were the same age.

I wrote about it on my blog.

Here are some pics:

Watched "Attack the Block" after hearing so many good things about it. Disliked it for the first half or so just because I couldn't get over how the main characters were all little fuckwits that I wanted to beat the shit out of, but they got better. Still, I had to watch it with subtitles on because I couldn't understand a damn thing those limey twerps were saying.

Movie-related blog entry, but not mine! My daughter and I went to an event last night that paid tribute to horror movie star Boris Karloff and featured a Q&A with Karloff's daughter, Sara.

I went and saw Puss in Boots.

It is cute. If you have a cat, the amount of cat like things in it was great. The plot is a little ehhh, but the cast manages to keep it from being dull. But it is one of my top animated films this year, and probably the last good one released to theaters (Arthur looks remarkably bad, TinTin may be on the bad end too but I can't make a judgement until I've seen a longer trailer that shows more than "look at this water", and Happy Feet one was on the bad end so I'm not feeling too confident about Two unless it's 1.5 hours of fat baby penguins grooving and jiving (no adult penguins, they're just not as cute animated)

My favorite part was the scene featuringthis amazing song. And as I watched the credits, I got my answer to how this awesome song got in the movie (hint: it's my favorite director producing :D) Actually, I really liked the score in this film.

I watched 'Law Abiding Citizen' - hated it. Gerald Butler can do better than this. He wasn't even a Law Abiding Citizen.

I went to see the newest Pokemon movie, POKEMON THE MOVIE WHITE: VICTINI AND ZEKROM, in its limited theatrical run on Saturday. It's one of the best of the 14 Pokemon movies so far and the first to show up on the big screen since POKEMON HEROES (2003). It's a got a CASTLE IN THE SKY vibe to it.

I wrote it up on my blog.

I had no clue the newest Pokemon movie was in the theaters. I guess I missed the opportunity to see it on the big screen. What do you think about Iris though? I really kinda like her a lot as a sidekick. She's way less annoying than some of his previous girl bros.

Totally can't wait for the new Sherlock Holmes movie. 10 days! I hope I am still this enthusiastic about it after seeing it.

After watching the BBC Sherlock Holmes series, I'm kinda more excited for that to be coming back sometime in 2012. (They are doing Hounds of Baskerville! One of my favorite Holmes stories!) Image

I actually want to see War Horse. I have a soft spot for animals, so I expect to be bawling my eyes out by the end of the movie, for good or bad.

Iris is the next best thing to Misty, whom she's clearly modeled on. She's also supposed to be black, according to something I read on the internet, although the English dub voice actress for her is white.

I definitely love the new season.

It snuck in right there at the end, but Ghost Protocol may be my favorite movie of the year. Pure awesome from beginning to end. Brad Bird should have started directing live action movies years ago.

Also, Simon Pegg is pretty much one of my favorite people ever.

That is precisely the reason I am waiting for the netflix/HBO/whatever version. Don't get me wrong, I too love Brad Bird and Simon Pegg, but I'll be damned if I am forced to support them when a psycho piece of shit star will be the credit taker (and shovel more money into a damned cult)

Oh man, I've been seeing so many movies.

Columbiana: An action movie for action-movie's sake. Intriguing, but not as smart as it lets on with an unsatisfying ending.

Friends With Benefits: I fell asleep 20 minutes in, woke up at the end, and could tell I didn't miss anything I couldn't have figured out from the get-go.

Super 8
: Pretty good movie ruined by an unnecessary amount of lens flair.

Midnight in Paris: Meh to the meh-th degree. 90 minutes to say one thing? Sorry Woody, not good enough.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol: A smart action film decently written and excellently executed. Good on you, Brad Bird.

Sherlock Holmes 2: Didn't see the first, but I was decently amused. Kind of overused some of the visual effects, but actually funny and kind of gripping.

@nesh Now you know Abrams cannot go without his lens flare! It would be like separating the poor man from his soul! I didn't like the movie much, mostly because I went in wanting a monster movie and instead I got stupid story about kids being stupid I don't care about the kids I want more monster arrrgh it took too long for the monster to appear

The bf got the Alien movies box set so I've been forced to sit through those. But he won't watch the first two. Because he likes bad movies. This is like when he tried to get me to like Star Wars and the first movie he shows me is the one with that godawful kid actor in it. But thankfully I've seen the first two before, so I had something to stand on with the last two. If I had to rank the Alien movies - Alien=Aliens>3>>Resurrection. I seem to either love Whedon or hate Whedon stuff, with most of it ranking on the hate side of the equation. The extras discs are really neat though, I enjoyed the making of 3 and Resurrection more than the films themselves! (edit - I call all extras for a film outside of commentary tracks "making of")

I watched Princess Bride again this weekend because it's a great fun flick.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes - Umm, it's okay, I guess. I had more fun rifftracking this film than I did trying to enjoy the plot. The pseudo science that they used threw me for a loop because it didn't make any sense. I feel sorry for the actor that plays the douchebag in the Harry Potter films, I hope he doesn't get typecast.

Harry Potter whatever film part 1 - Well, I'm not too keen on the HP franchise as a whole, and there were several character interactions that just seemed plum stupid to me. Another film that was more fun to riff on than sit and enjoy plainly.

Dinner for Schmucks (again) - eh, I still don't like this film, but I watched it with my brother because he'd never seen it and heavens it is impossible watching movies with him if he hasn't seen said film before.

Red Riding Hood - This movie was pure crap trying to capitalize on Twilight BS. I didn't even watch all of it and it made me question how I was spending the precious minutes I have been given during my existence. Another movie I somewhat watched with my brother because I visited when he was halfway done with it.

It was an hommage to 80s Spielberg etc. "Monster"-Familymovies (think of E.T. and the likes, where it's the story of kids), so you definitely went in with the wrong expectations. =P

I don't know how big the lens flare is in this one, but he's not forcing it on every movie (or television series).

Which is no problem, except I found the kids annoying and their storyline boring.

I watched Sophie's Revenge, a charming little romcom. It's nothing I would recommend outside of you being in the mood for fluff though, at least it has adorable animated sequences that break up the usual rut those genre flicks take.

I was bored and decided to look up more things on the new Spiderman movie. Two things - one, I cannot get over how long Andrew Garfield's neck is in the promo shots. Two, the lizard looks like a refined Goomba. I am lacking a mechanism to hype myself up for this movie, and any other future superhero movie for that matter. I'm not burned out on the genre it's just... they can never get the image or plot together it seems.
