Sorry to continue the non-blog translation discussion, but have any of you found studying Japanese through idol-related material hurting your verbal communication skills at all? Currently my only exposure to Japanese is through Hello Project and Japanese baseball (which I'm sure isn't really helping). Because of that, I'm afraid that if I were to converse with someone in Japanese they would mistake me for a Japanese schoolgirl because of the way I'm speaking. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/dry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='<_<' />

The main problem about learning through any kind of media is that you need to be aware of the regional dialects involved. If you're learning from NHK it's fine since that's "standard Japanese," but when it's random sources like anime, comedy shows and idols, you're probably getting a mix of several types, and while you learn "x=this word," you're actually learning "in Kansai-ben x=this word."

That's what happened to me, since when I moved to Japan full time, I was getting Shimane-ben in daily life, then watching tons of TV and picking up other slang, and later moving to Kyoto and getting Kansai-ben every day, to the point where I'd throw 2 or 3 different ones into a single conversation, as well as English words when I didn't know the right vocabulary. Japanese friends of mine just gave up trying to correct me and started calling it "Al-ben."

Actually, I watch a lot more male-idol centric shows than I do female ones, so I'm in more danger of sounding like a man (I'm a girl). <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

But in all seriousness, there are a lot of people who have that problem - it's the typical story of the anime fan who talks like an anime character because they think that's what Japanese people sound like. I think if you just keep in mind the fact that there are differences in speaking patterns for men and women in Japanese (as well as varying levels of politeness) and make an effort to learn those differences, you'll rarely have that problem :) If you ONLY learn Japanese via Hello! Project idol shows....well, your Japanese is not likely to be very good regardless.

I have an absurd amount of down time at work today, so I translated some of poor neglected Kananan's entries. Omg, this one <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' />

I don't expect to be able to pick her up full time, but I can try and grab her posts when/if I have free time. Maimi's are starting to take less of an absurd amount of time now that I'm memorizing the emoji she uses over and over.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I don't think I'll ever get down the regional differences, but I kind of get the gender differences.

My main concern is that if I ever go to Japan and try my culturally inappropriate Japanese skills, because I'm Japanese American, they'll just think I'm a retarded Japanese citizen and walk away. I'll just have to remember to pack my American flag t-shirt before I leave.

And to get back on topic, I'd really like to thank you guys for translating all of these blogs. Over the last several months I've been upping my interest in Hello Project, and blog!project is a great way for me to feed that fandom. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /weeeh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':weeeh:' /> Keep up the great work!

@cadmonkey Thanks for your kind words, in reference to your language learning I always recommend memrise (google it) to people, it's a fantastic place to start.

If you can self study with determination, then the "Minna no Nihongo" series is also a great place to start.

In the end will power and experience will improve your skills!

Good luck!

Okay, here's my philosophy when it came to Japanese in my daily life in Japan... I called it the "Talking Monkey Principle." You see, if you meet a monkey that could talk, it doesn't matter what kind of vocal quirks it has, as long as it can understand you and make itself understood, it's freaking amazing! And that's pretty much the reaction you'll get with most Japanese people. Even with whatever problems you have, they're just surprised you can do it in the first place.

Effort and a respect for the culture counts more than anything, since there are countless gaijin pieces of shit that just come to their country, hang out with only each other unless they're trying to hook up with Japanese girls, make asses of themselves, and never learn a damn word other than how to order drinks in a bar.

How appropriate for me! I figured I would be OK as long as I put the effort into communicating correctly.

And rob, thanks for that site! I tried it out for a bit, and I can already see how awesome it is. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Only slightly for me because I tend to pick up overly casual phrases.

However, avoiding a good (and interesting) chunk of Japanese source material out of fear you'll communicate "wrong" is a dangerous and misinformed move. It also, imo, comes from a gaijin hierarchy where anime/etc fans are considered lowest on the totem pole. Language is something you just get used to and exposing yourself to anything, as much as possible, is good. Plus, idol/anime/etc stuff is REAL LEGITIMATE Japanese speech -- just with certain connotations and context-specific usage.

Anyway...

I prepared all the MM OG categories. With exception of unm like Aya Ishiguro.. and Fukuda Asuka... <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

I didn't prepare Satoda Mai and Erika from C-ute. I hope we can live without all of this. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I got confused on what icons to give to Satoda and Erika from C-ute. Satoda should get the same as Erika Miyoshi, but that watermelon was meant only for Erika Miyoshi. And Erika from C-ute.. the c-ute icon or?...

These are problems I didn't feel like solving unless someone actually comes with interest to translate them. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Hi, I'd uh. Like to file a complaint? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... smooch.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='=3=' />

I went to B!P a while ago to read Ai's translations because I saw some pics of her on H!O and was trying to figure out what was up with them, where she went, etc. (Unless there are cacti in Japan.)

The last blog entries were translated by Kurikaesu, about a week or so ago. It was disappointing; but not that big of a deal because I've known on and off she's been busy. But I went to H!O's forum front page and I saw this barrage of blog entries from "Ai chans most up-to-date blog translations v(^0^)v," which I do recognize to be KaitoDoraemon's blog...is he ignoring those PMs you sent? (I just went through the pages to see if I missed him resigning or something) It's a little unnerving that he's a translator here and doesn't actually translate here. :(

Now you know me, I love to pop caps in asses and take names. So if ya need me to do that in my very special way just give me a buzz. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... R#>/8o.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='8o' />

Yeah, I noticed that as well. Seems pretty lame since it's not like they couldn't just post them on one and copy paste to the other. Our links are all over H!O from our translators that do that, so why couldn't they?

It is. I didn't feel like delving into why when I can't change his mind most likely.

I felt like giving a lecture about how he should have notified me at the very least ahead of time instead of me seeing him translate somewhere else..

But, there's no point to that, I suppose.

If I can throw in my 2 cents here...

Translating for our blog does require some more busy work than simply hitting "reply" on a bbs forum. Takahashi is also a pain in the ass because of her emoticons. If for no other reason, I can understand someone preferring to use their familiar bbs to post stuff. Plus, probably 0 people have expectations for consistency on something like H!O forums whereas B!P is semi...I don't know, not professional but... you know what I mean?

Personally, I think it is stupid to hoard one's hard work and talents in something as obscure as a forum post in some random thread on a gigantic bbs like H!O but to each his own and to each his own audience. In the end, it is not worth getting mad at someone considering this is all for fun anyhow. So I feel like I totally fail in trying to do some of Aika's blog posts now, since she talks so much about food and even seems to give out some recipes. Apparently I don't really know the lingo for recipes in Japanese. XD Most of her style of writing is pretty easy, until we get to those recipes...

http://ameblo.jp/mitsuiaika-blog/entry-11152022182.html

This is her recipe for some yams & rice, and though I've now come to understand some of the way she writes these recipes, the bolded part especially really confuses me. I think I get the general idea, but don't really know what kind of verbs she's using. XD In the first part, she's something about yams and that kawahagi fish, and in the second part something about inside the yam something... which she goes on to say what to put in. I'm mainly having trouble with the いてする and 山芋のすったなかに

If anyone can help, let me know. ^^; I almost decided to give up on this post, lol.

Lightly boil the okra, then peel the yam skins★

Add soy sauce (about 1 tablespoon) to the grated yams. Add fine powdered stock, ajinomoto (a little of each), and cut up the okra and add it in♪

Once it's mixed together, put it on top of rice, sprinkle with bonito flakes, drizzle with soy sauce and it's done.

It took some hunting, but I figured out that すった seems to be the same as/similar to すりおろす, to grate. As for the first part, it's actually "yamaimo no kawa (skin) haite (剥ぐ to peel)" :)

Ahhh I see now I think. Thanks a lot! I was looking some of this up late at night, and just putting the 皮剥 together I got some kind of leatherfish lol... and it was really confusing! This makes much more sense :) ...although I still might not have gotten the すった haha.

You mean the "dake wa"? It's basically the second thing you said. The closest English phrase would be something like "I definitely won't lose in spirit." What she means is that even if she fails at the actual task, she won't be mentally defeated. "Not for lack of trying" type of thing.

"kou yatte" is "in this way." So literally "If I write in this way, I'll be able to persuade myself."

The gist: If I write that I can do it, I'll believe that I can do it.

Hi everyone, sorry I haven't been here in a while. I suddenly got quite busy with job-related stuff. I'll catch up with the Gaki and Takahashi blogs, as well as the Gaki graduation messages, this weekend <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Regarding the Takahashi blog/KaitoDoraemon, I was also surprised when I first saw translations over at h!o, but I told strawberryjam that I'd be happy to take over at b!p after I eventually found out that KaitoDoraemon wasn't coming back (my getting busy right after I told her that was just unfortunate timing...) Also just to be clear, I will post my own translations, not copy and paste anyone else's~ <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... joyful.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':joyful:' />
