I watched Tonari no Totoro in a theater today, having never seen it (or any other Studio Ghibli movie) before. It was really cute, simple, and well done. I liked it! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... joyful.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':joyful:' />
[/quote]
TOTORO is a masterpiece. You should see some more films in that series, esp. KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE, LAPUTA: CASTLE IN THE SKY, ONLY YESTERDAY and WHISPER OF THE HEART. All but two or three of the films in the series are covered in my book.

Re: Movies
Kiki's Delivery Service is probably my absolutely favorite Ghibli production, but Spirited Away and Totoro are close seconds.
I didn't like Laputa or Ponyo though.

Re: Movies
Kiki's Delivery service was my favourite movie as a kid; I should watch it again. I've been meaning to watch Totoro because it was suggested for me, I just haven't found the time.
Re: Movies
Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service and Totoro for the win!
I saw the 2nd Sherlock Holmes movie. It was good. I almost choked on a Junior mint during the train sequence when RDJ and Jude Law were fighting and ripping their clothes off as I tried to stifle one of those HAH giggles. It failed. At least there were some big explosions after that so the coughing fit I had was masked pretty well.
They showed the preview for the last Dark Knight film. The stadium sequence was memorable enough for me to dream about. What a way to go. D:

I want to see this movie. Nazis in space and Sarah Palin as president, what more laughter could you ask for? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... R#>/8o.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='8o' />
Also, saw the trailer for The Secret World of Arrietty. Though I really don't like the voice acting, I never did when it came to Disney. I don't know if it has to do with the Ghibli animation or the actors Disney employs but they just don't mesh well. This is no exception.

Wow, that old woman has a horrible voice actress that doesn't fit at all.

Re: Movies
Hmm...I actually don't have a problem with the voice acting in the trailer. I'll definitely see it in theaters sometime next week, it's better than waiting months for the DVD with subtitles to come out.

I made my husband watch "Marry Me" with me. It's a Lifetime movie so of course it's cheesy and crazy stupid sometimes, but Lucy Liu is in it, so it's not that bad. I'm still trying to get over the depressing crap they made me watch and read in college.
I also re-watched The Lion King for the 9023498239458millionth time.

I bought a Blue-Ray drive last week since I was fed up with my two old DVD drives constantly fucking up the playback.
I bought Inception, The Big Lebowski, Pulp Fiction and the Planet Earth 5-disc documentary.
The most amazing thing; the dude's movie has JAPANESE AUDIO ! This is fucking hilarious !
I know the movie inside-out and hearing the "dyuudo" talking like that is absolutely hilarious.
EDIT: Oh goodness, how they resolved the joke about "asian-american" was quite good.

Saw Hugo in the theater yesterday. It was a cute movie, nice in 3D but very slow and not enough Jude Law. That is all! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

Re: Movies
I saw Ghost Rider.
Cage's best performance since Wicker Man. Several scenes had me in stitches. Sure, it was awkward being in a crowded theater and being the only one laughing at the serious scenes, but the acting was soooo so bad I couldn't help it.
The interrogation scene was my favorite. Even the female character broke character and had a WTF look on her face.
And at the end, he gave a line with such ridiculousness including a face I hoped that would be the final line/shot because it made me laugh almost as hard as the interrogation scene - and the movie gods blessed me because it was.
This movie was so bad that it started like shit and got worse. There was never a glimpse of a good movie gone bad. The only silver lining is Cage. Oh, that wonderful wonderful man. I hope many gifs of his performance populate the interbutts so I don't have to watch the movie again to witness the hilarity.
The SFX... lord have mercy, those were as funny as Cage. My favorite was the tech demo shot they cut to twice in the film. I swear it was a joke shot that made its way into the film. Just a character render on black with a cheesy ass I think they made a bone skull wink I don't think I can describe it but I don't think you should see it unless under some sort of mind altering substance.

I'm continuing my coverage of "The Izu Dancer" in my latest blog entry. In my last entry, I covered Maki Goto's version and in the new one I cover two older film versions, including one starring 1970s pop icon Momoe Yamaguchi.

Re: Movies
So I saw Arriety on opening night, and I have to take back what I said earlier, the old lady's voice was pretty annoying. I was perfectly fine with the rest of the voice acting, though.
It wasn't my favorite Studio Ghibli film, but it was still good. The animation was beautiful, and pretty much any scene could be used as a nice desktop background. One problem was that if you saw the trailer, you could already say you've seen the movie.

I also watched the first disk of Planet Earth now.
WOW.
Basically, if you have a BR-drive/player you ABSOLUTELY NEED to have this collection.
There is no "but" or "if".
Even if you're an uneducated monkey and don't like documentaries, you need to buy and watch this. You can still watch your fellow monkeys do stuff !
The picture quality is absolutely insane at times and it must have took them a huge amount of time to get all those shots.
It's mind blowing, just from a technical standpoint alone.
And if you're like me, loving documentaries, you're absolutely going to eat this up.
Also, my second BR package:
Scarface, which looks suprisingly good for such an old film.
Memento
Star Trek XI
Jackie Brown
Black Dynamite
EDIT:
Also, re-watching Pulp Fiction made me realize even more just how much of a loveletter to cinema the movie is and how much I absolutely love it.
I now put it above Jackie Brown again.
My favourite scene is probably with "Girl, you'll be a woman soon".
Man, I could fill entire Top 10s with my favourite dialogues, music scenes etc. from Tarantino movies.

Tarantino has a smug face and weird talking, if that's what you mean.

Finally, someone who sees the light on Tarantino!!! The dude is a hack who just "homages" foreign films and then throws in all his weird fetishes and what he thinks is clever dialog. Jackie Brown was the best he's done, and while stuff like Reservoir Dogs seemed awesome at first, once you see just how much he ripped off the original movies it becomes ridiculous. Now his movies are the equivalent of him smelling his own farts and loving every second of it.

I'm still upset he was chosen for the Avatar movie. He better keep his dirty paws away from Korra. I know I'm going to lurve that show to pieces when it airs.

I did like Unbreakable, though that was a more "enjoying the concept and SLJ" than the actual film. SLJ was the only reason I watched that film. I haven't seen a MKS film since, and I don't need to because the internet will always tell me exactly what I need to know haha.

That guy is in his own league though.
"No, no, Mr. Shyamalan, that's not a story idea, that's a twist."

Yes, yes he is. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
I'm still upset he was chosen for the Avatar movie. He better keep his dirty paws away from Korra. I know I'm going to lurve that show to pieces when it airs.
@PQ He was downhill after 6th Sense. Signs was an insult to my intelligence and I remember walking out of the theater pissed. I did like Unbreakable, though that was a more "enjoying the concept and SLJ" than the actual film. SLJ was the only reason I watched that film. I haven't seen a MKS film since, and I don't need to because the internet will always tell me exactly what I need to know haha.

Ah Petit, you see. He played on my biggest fear. Above ghosts and monsters, bug eyed aliens are my #1 freak out. So he got me, got me good. I had to sleep with the windows locked and shades drawn with a bottle of water next to me bed for weeks after that.

Hm, I found the whole movie to be rather comical and not too serious.

Re: Movies
Like probably a few others here I'm interested in "hunger games" because of it being a "NO I DIDN'T KNOW BATTLE ROYALE, THAT PHENOMENAL MOVIE AND MANGA EXISTED BEFORE, THIS BOOK IS UNIQUE !!" absolutely original movie that has never been done before.
Reviews are good, saying it's more than just a Battle Royale copycat.
But I'm still not convinced.
What do you guys think ?
The first part of the trailer (http://www.imdb.com/list/JFs9NWw6XI0/#play-all) makes it seem like a 100% copy of the armor-dispense scene from BR. At least in tone.
But somehow I'm still intrigued.
Also, since we were talking about "Aliens", Prometheus seems to be interesting. I just hope it's not another horror movie, but an interesting Sci-Fi piece with some philosophy in it.

Re: Movies
But PQ, they are "hurt" by water. There's water vapor in the air. They go to a planet that is 80% covered in the stuff. You are safe from those aliens! :D
I read the hunger games book 1 and posted about it in the book thread. Here's my overall impression of the book: I wonder if she knew of BR and decided to make her "own" version. I know the entire premise is why people are so excited about it and I get tired of explaining about the cult classic that's really similar when people ask me about it because I've read the book.
In any case, the book suffered from character development (I know I said as I read it I shouldn't complain, but it still really bothers me because people are championing it for that and I thought it was nonexistant), world building, and predictability (which is probably a personal thing). A good concept that had a bad execution. I'm watching the movie tomorrow because I hope it will fix the problems I had.
Oh, as an "omake"
Quote from coworker - "The Hunger Games is so good I feel like I'm cheating on [Twilight's] Edward and Jacob because I like it more!"
It's really weird to hear people talk about YA novels like they're literature. I love genre pieces too (just look at my love of kung-fu films) but I'm not raising them to Citizen Kane levels. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
