Kouhaku + Other New Year/Xmas Shows
It's that time of year again... the guest lists are coming out for all of the major JP year-end music shows. Here's what's out so far:
Best Artist 2012
Summary for noobs/forgetful old farts: Several "best ___ artist" categories are voted for online in advance and announced on the show. This is generally a bunch of performances by currently popular artists of their biggest hit this year or their latest song. They show a bunch of semi- interesting stats like the age groups and genders of people who voted for each group. Airs 11/28.

FNS Kayousai 2012
Summary for noobs/forgetful old farts: A celebration of new and old. The set is like a fancy dinner show with all of the guests around tables in the middle watching each other perform on small stages. Many perform with live acoustic bands. Usually older artists will perform some of their greatest hits while newer artists will perform their big hit of the year. Lots of collaborations between newer and older artists. Usually this has the best guest list and fun collabs, but the show is unfortunately notorious for sound problems. Airs live 12/5.

Music Station Super Live 2012
Summary for noobs/forgetful old farts: Geared toward a younger audience. Usually the guests are almost all whoever is in right now. More of a Christmasy theme, and more of a live concert atmosphere. Airs live 12/21.
Guest list not out yet.
63rd Kouhaku Uta Gassen
Summary for noobs/forgetful old farts: The most prestigious of the year-end shows. The girls team faces off against the boys team, voted on by the audience. The idea is that you get to be on this show once you're a big deal, but many "big deal" artists don't appear because of other commitments (their own concerts, family, etc). Generally an odd mix of older enka singers and young pop stars. Known for having amazing sets and costumes. Airs live December 31st. Number indicates how many times the person has appeared.

My prediction is that the girls will win again this year. The boys' team is bogged down with too many old farts, and the newcomers (with the exception of Kanjani) don't seem to be people who have made as much of a splash as the newcomers on the girls' team. I do feel like in general there are more newcomers and less enka singers who have been doing this the last 50 years this time around. It might just be my imagination. I also wish you had to re-qualify for Kouhaku each year. Several of these people were a big thing their first year on Kouhaku, but have continued to appear despite not having the same level of success as before. Also with half of Johnny's at Kouhaku, they really might as well just give up on their Countdown show and let the other groups do things individually.
No Hello! Project/OGs to be seen on any of these, which is really sad and kind of surprising. I would have thought they'd at least be on FNS Kayousai, they were there last year. They may show up on Music Station, but I doubt it since none of the H!P groups have even been on MS's weekly show in years.

Re: Kouhaku + Other New Year/Xmas Shows
Pretty sad lists as usual. The only artists I actually care about (except Moritaka) are going to be lip-synching, making the performance pretty useless.
Also:
It is awesome that Moritaka is performing again.
I sure hope MomoClo lip-synchs.
No H!P, though that's not surprising.
No Hallyu Wave Korean artists, its pretty nice.

You're right, I hadn't noticed. I don't have anything against Korean artists, but I am glad to see that I was at least a little wrong about people getting in to Kouhaku once and staying forever. It made sense to have some of the artists last year because they had a huge popularity wave, but it seems like the Kpop fad is dying down a bit this year and appropriately they aren't showing up.
And I hate to tell you, but MomoClo has always sung live and probably will continue to do so. My guess is for Kouhaku they'll probably do Mouretsu or Otome since those were big hits for them this year and both lend well to the theatrics of the show.

Yeah, sad truth :( I just think it'll be kinda embarrassing for them to be on such a huge show if they sound as bad as they usually do. Some of their recent performances of Saraba actually sound really good, but the dance is WAY less overly-energetic than most of their other songs, so I imagine its easier to sing live. Let's just hope they're actually improving, though.

Re: Kouhaku + Other New Year/Xmas Shows
Perfume and Kyary might be interesting, the others I don't care about to see.
Maybe AKB, depending on the song.
Too bad no foreign artists.

If people cared about how well any of these idols sung live, almost none of them would be popular at all.

Don't start with that crap. There's a difference between them at least being listenable and then being...MomoClo. A lot of idols are at least proficient enough to not hurt your ears or drive you insane. And you're just projecting your own personal preferences on everyone else.
Most idols, if they get anywhere near these big-time music shows, they lip-synch, so I don't think the general public really has any idea how good or bad they are, but they would probably care if they actually heard it live.

Re: Kouhaku + Other New Year/Xmas Shows
Anyone have a link to the final setlist on FNS?
I'm planning on picking up the DVD at HQ Video in Manhattan tonight.
Last year's show was great and I discovered a whole new crop of singers as a result (new to me, that is) not least of which were Nanase Aikawa and Mai Kuraki.
Thanks.

I do! I haven't had a chance to watch yet but there are a few items on the setlist that at least raise my eyebrows? XD I also have a link that's not an enormous TS file if anyone wants a smaller mp4.
Note that no one cares about except me: Arashi is the only artist not to appear live (meaning their performances were taped in advance, I'm not sure who at the live broadcast lipsynced). Member Aiba Masaki had a schedule conflict and leader Ohno Satoshi didn't feel right having four members appear, so their performances were taped in advance.
Years were written in my someone at Jpopsuki, sorry that some are randomly missing.

Re: Kouhaku + Other New Year/Xmas Shows
I just watched this last night, it was actually pretty entertaining. There were a lot of times where the 48's and MomoClo were used as backup dancers, which I think worked much better than trying to have them sing with some of these people. My personal favorite was the insane Go Hiromi/Golden Bomber/SKE48 performance.
You might be disappointed by the "all-star lineup." Both M1 and M76 are actually one main artist singing with everyone else standing around sharing mics as a barely-audible chorus. M1 is lead by SMAP and M76 is lead by Love Psychadelico. This is actually a really good thing because their lead vocalist has near-perfect English and does justice to the song other than some weird ad-lib she throws in at the end.

I do! I haven't had a chance to watch yet but there are a few items on the setlist that at least raise my eyebrows? XD I also have a link that's not an enormous TS file if anyone wants a smaller mp4.

There are about 4 songs on there I'm kinda interested to see, but definitely don't want to download anything large just to see those couple. Kinda cool they covered John Lennon, though that song seems to be pretty popular in Japan, I've seen a number of covers from J-artists.

I watched the first disc of this last night. So far, it’s nowhere near as good as last year’s show. Maybe the thrill of discovery is gone. Maybe the acts just aren’t that good. Maybe I’m just annoyed that there was no Hello! Project participation. (They opened last year’s show with quite a rousing number so I was won over from the start.)
For every act I like in the first half (Koda Kumi, Mai Kuraki, Kaori Mochida, AKB48, Chisato Moritaka), there are eight or nine acts I didn’t like. The male acts here tend to annoy me. (What’s with male Japanese performers and hair?) There were a lot of older performers in last year’s show, both male and female, whom I liked.
There were three songs that have been covered by H!P that were done here by their original performers, including one that Nacky did on the Champloo album. (Forgive me for liking Nacky’s version better—even IF the original was the best-selling Japanese single in the 1990s!)
Why were Nogizaka 46 and AKB 48 in the same room? Shouldn’t booking one act automatically preclude booking the other?
There were some Korean acts in last year’s show. And one American act. There don’t appear to be ANY non-Japanese acts in this year’s lineup. What's up with that?
The copy I have of Disc 1 only has 14 chapter stops, with the 14th chapter containing the last 30 numbers. So I can't even skip to the songs I like.
P.S. Nesmith is a performer in this. He's a Japanese citizen with an African-American father and a Japanese mother. So it's still accurate to say that there are no non-Japanese acts in the show.

Re: Kouhaku + Other New Year/Xmas Shows
So I finished watching FNS. Overall, it's a pale echo of last year's show. The only real highlights in the second half are a duet of Nana Mizuki and Nanase Aikawa and a song by Kana Nishino with violin by Emiri Miyamoto. The rest is mostly a mix of acts that are uninteresting (to me) or poorly used. The numbers are all really short, so even when they have someone good (like Koda Kumi) it's done before you know it. I'll give a longer writeup on my blog this weekend.

The huge fad of foreign-ness that swept Japan like a tsunami last year has all but died off now. All of the Kpop artists and a few of the random American ones have mostly declined very sharply in sales and the novelty of the new-ness of them has worn off. There wasn't anything particularly sweeping in 2012 except AKB's obnoxious popularity and massive graduation impact (read: end of an era.) There weren't any particularly huge fads throughout the whole year that I noticed, really. I think Japan's entertainment industry lost far more major artists and personalities this year than they had new ones debuting.

Re: Kouhaku + Other New Year/Xmas Shows
I skimmed through FNS only watching the performances of artists I knew or which looked interesting. I didn't see the last year's one, but I agree this was a little lackluster. The one I cared to see the most was M59 Wada Akiko×Miyavi, but sadly it wasn't good. Those two put together could have blown the stage away, but Wada was just indifferent, and Miyavi acted like he matured by 30 years since I last checked him out (notice how I said "matured" and not "got older"). Also, as Madara said, many performances were too short to be worthwhile, and there was a lot of bait-and-switching in the lineup, where an artist you cared about was actually only dancing in the background hardly getting any screen time.
Two things that stood out especially: Princess Princess need to realize they're like 50 now, and Hamasaki needs to just quit. Not hating on Hamasaki, but even I, without any vocal training or theory and probably being tone deaf too, can hear that she's struggling to squeeze each and every syllable out of her. She's a very sad shadow of her former self, and I say it with sadness because she used to be great and had more than a couple of great songs.
For a positive note, Moeno for once gets some quality screentime in AKB's new single performance, even if it was only by chance that she got to sub-lead it.

So, so true. The circumstances that have made Ayu terrible are unfortunate - not only is she half deaf, she toured like crazy and has probably also put a lot of strain on her throat. It sucks to have to step down under those circumstances. But she really needs to stop singing. There are so many other avenues that she could remain an icon in the industry - writing for other acts, producing, continuing to be a fashion icon, etc.
Agreed on Miyavi as well, he looked like a totally different person. I looked him up afterwords because I was surprised he's still relevant in Japanese music. I had no idea he spoke fluent English. o.o
As for the lack of foreign acts... I actually think this is a good thing. Don't get me wrong - I think there are a lot of great things about international acts being accepted in Japan and I think cultural exchange and open-mindedness is great, especially in a country that is overall very wary of foreigners. At the same time I think there's something nice about celebrating your own country's musical history, and FNS Kayousai tends to do that more than any of the other big end-of-year shows, which mainly focus on what's new and hot. HOWEVER. It's not true to say there were no foreign acts there. Technically Che'Nelle isn't Japanese at all, though her fame seems to be mostly in Japan.
As fo the overall show, I wasn't as disappointed as the rest of you. I guess I don't expect a lot out of these shows because they cram in SO MANY acts, there's bound to be only a few I care about. I fast forwarded through a lot. But I really liked most of the Go Hiromi mash ups, V6's Ai Nanda, Sada Masashi's performances, Yuki Saori's haunting Yoake no Scat, and every single song featuring Tamaki Kouji. I'd never heard of him before, but he looked like someone's crazy grandpa who escaped from the nursing home and he was hilarious to watch.
One thing I really like about FNS is that you always get good shots of the audience, and it gives you a pretty good idea of what most of these groups think of each other. Inocchi from V6 was jumping up and down all excited for Matchy and Go Hiromi (both are to him what Nakazawa Yuko would be to Sayu, essentially), Takamizawa of The Alfee looked really bored and confused by EXILE (me too, man), Takamina (sp?) of AKB was joking around with TM Revolution. That stuff is always fun for me to watch.

Re: Kouhaku + Other New Year/Xmas Shows
Yeah, in the audience shots we got to see Rena Matsui smile a lot, always a good thing. Koda Kumi seemed to be having a great time. She seems like she'd be fun to hang out with.
Of the male acts, Go Hiromi was the performer I liked the most (possibly the only one).
Ayu's voice scared me too. That was painful.
Didn't know that about Che'Nelle. Never seen or heard of her before.
The Korean girl groups last year added a lot of entertainment value that was missing from this year's show.
This number, M56 Go Hiromi×NESMITH×SHOKICHI - GOLDFINGER'99 (1999), struck me as odd. It was Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca" in Japanese and they even sang the title at one point. It didn't sound like they were just sampling it either. What's the legality of that?
There were three songs that I've heard H!P do covers of:
"Watashi ga Obasan ni Nattemo" (1992) originally by Chisato Moritaka who does it here;
"Diamonds" (1989) covered by High King/originally by Princess Princess who performs it here.
"Kimi ga Iru Dake De" (1992), originally performed by Kome Kome Club, whose founder, Tetsuya Ishii, does it here (with one of my favorites, Mai Kuraki). Nacky did it on the Champloo album, I think in a duet with someone else (quite well as I remember).
Also, two performers, Ken Hirai and Yui, do a male-female duet of a Yumi Arai song, "Yasashisa ni Tsutsumareta nara" (1974), that was used as the end song of the Miyazaki film, KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE. Okay, so I don't mind Ken Hirai either. But I could do without all those friggin' boy bands. (And old men with raspy voices.)

GOLDFINGER '99 is one of Go Hiromi's biggest hits. You might have noticed basically everyone in the audience knew the hand moves for the "Achichi achi" line in the chorus, even though a lot of the younger artists were little kids when it came out. It's a cover song, and just as legal as any other cover. I'm sure Sony got the rights/permission from Columbia before it was released.
"Kimi ga Iru Dake de" was covered by Nacky, Mano, and Mai aka Petitmoni V. Personally I thought their cover was awful, these are three voices I don't like together at all.

Well, since Columbia is a branch of Sony's corporate empire, it now makes sense. But why'd they call it "Goldfinger 99" and not its original title?

Re: Kouhaku + Other New Year/Xmas Shows
Watched an upload of Ayumi's performance. Man, just the first few notes being off really set the tone. I've thought Ayu was on the decline for a while now, but this is unimaginably bad. Just about every sustained note was off. The last chorus was alright, but she stumbled through that entire thing. Was she drunk? Like, seriously. I'm just surprised she would be so pleased at the end of that song and that she would try to free-ball in that outro (when her mic was cut!).
I've said before that she needs to do more producing and less singing because no matter how much the sound of her songs changes, she's only going to get worse.
I'm going to try to watch Koda's performance when I get home. I'm really surprised both Ayu and Koda only did older songs.

Koda participates in four numbers and changes costumes for each. For me, these numbers are among the highlights of the whole show.

Some really good reasons as made up by me right now:
- Livin La Vida Loca is impossibly hard to pronounce in Japanese. It would have come out as "Ribin ra bida roka" and we should be glad to be spared from that xD
- Even though English comprehension in Japan is famously low, Spanish comprehension is basically non-existent. "La Vida Loca" wouldn't have had the same impact.
More likely the real reasons:
- It's not a "true" cover. The melody of La Vida Loca was used, but the lyrics aren't a translation of the original. This is actually fairly common practice, but most of the time the original song isn't as internationally famous so most people don't notice. A lot of the time the artist never actually talks about the song as a cover.
- The song was used as a drama ending theme, so it's possible "goldfinger" was somehow related to that drama.
