I saw it on Christmas with a large, enthusiastic black audience. I loved it. I'm a huge fan of Tarantino anyway. This film is definitely of a piece with KILL BILL Vol. 1 (my favorite Tarantino movie) and INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, films set in a distinct grindhouse movie-based Tarantino-crafted alternate universe. Al calls him self-indulgent. Well, as somebody who grew up on the same movies Tarantino did, all I can say is, indulge, baby, indulge! Tarantino has a distinct vision, as do many other filmmakers of his age working today (think Christopher Nolan, Paul Thomas Anderson, Peter Jackson, David Fincher, etc.). I just happen to be more in tune with Tarantino's sensibilities than with any of those other guys. BTW, Neshcom, you left out mention of Christoph Waltz, who plays the other leading role--the German dentist-turned-bounty hunter who frees Django and takes him under his wing. While they're all good, it's Waltz's line delivery that really makes this movie work so well. And it's his character's crisis of conscience late in the film that really drives it into its final act.

My problem with Tarentino is that I also grew up with and watched the far better movies he's aping and would much rather watch them again than watch Tarentino sniff his farts for 2 hours. All he does is rip scenes straight out of them, and then fill them with what he considers "witty" dialog and close ups of gnarly feet.

You should see this movie. No closeups of gnarly feet. And it totally upends Hollywood's traditional view of the pre-Civil War south. This is definitely not your grandfather's GONE WITH THE WIND.

I think you just go into his movies with the preset idea that you don't like him, nor his movies.

The thing is, I did like him in the beginning, but then his movies just started reverting to the same tropes over and over again to the point he's devolving as a filmmaker. Also, his fans are second only to Nolan's fans in their inability to take any criticism whatsoever about his movies, and that makes me hate him even more (and I like Nolan, but those fucking fans...).

STACY (Attack of the Schoolgirl Zombies)

I only watched this to campare it to the stage play. I found the movie to be more of a comedy than a horror. The zombies just look like retarded girls covered in ketchup. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... stling.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':whistling:' /> There was certainly enough blood, gore, and dismembered moving body parts. The storyline is really commical and unrealistic, unless its common to take in a giggling schoolgirl that randomly walks into your house. Also, Shibu-san looks a bit old for Eiko. She's probably around 14-16, and Shibu looks like he's about 30. I'd also like to complain about the film making. It seems cheep and poorly shot, but, hey, that's a 2001 schoolgirl zombie movie for you. I'd say watch it along with the stage play for comparison. I personally like the play a million times better. So far I've watched The Artist, Rango and Jiro Dreams of Sushi.



All pretty good. Rango an okay animated film, nothing special. Probably my least favorite of the three. Next up is Jiro, for a documentary it was pretty good and had an underlying message about the state of the fishing in Japan. Also it made me want to not eat sushi and eat sushi at the same time. Seeing the fish getting sliced and diced while still moving, not so good. But seeing it all prepared and the care and attention put into every single little piece. Amazing. Lastly, The Artist. I've been wanting to watch this movie for awhile because silent films have always intrigued me. Movies these days lose something when they are all full of dialogue and special effects. Jean Dujardin's smile, dear god that smile. Why does he have to be married, and French. I can see why he won an Oscar, he was amazing. The movie in the beginning was rather slow and I was contemplating dropping it, but after awhile it started to pick up and I'm glad I stayed with it.

Went and saw Gangster Squad tonight. I've never actually seen Ryan Gosling act, is his voice always that high? Other than that, major sploosh material. Josh Brolin kicks ass, Emma Stone is a beauty, and Sean Penn makes angry work. The story is so typical 40s LA cop that I can't believe they made it last 2 hours. There's a couple of laughs and most of them feel unintentional. The soundtrack is uninspiring. There's one (bigger) scene where the music really jives well, but the rest is generic movie brums and kshews. Don't go running out to see it.



Though, now I wanna play L.A. Noire again.

Saw Django Unchained today. Unfortunately the 4K thingy did nothing and it looked like usual IMAX quality.

The movie certainly didn't feel like it was nearly 3h long (unlike The Hobbit) and the cutting, editing and pacing was great, especially for such a long movie.

My favourite part was shitting on the KKK. I have no clue what Jonah Hill did there though.

While it still had quite some good humour, funny and sharp dialogue and as I said I never felt bored, it felt more like a Hollywood movie than a Tarantino movie. I find that kinda disappointing, eventhough he still made a very entertaining movie.



We watched the German version, but were wondering if in the original (English) version, was Waltz ever talking German ?

I just watched the live action Rurouni Kenshin, and HOLEEE SHIT!!!! I could not have asked for a better adaptation of the comic! So much full blown awesomeness!!! Definitely in my top three favorite comic adaptations.

Most recently, I saw John Dies at the End, which was also great. It was missing quite a bit from the book, but kept the right tone. Recommended thoroughly.

This is the best description of just about all of Tarantino's output ever.



Just came back from Django Unchained. It was one of the less offensive ones as far as Tarantino's farts go, at least until the last hour when it became his another intolerable self-love fest.



Just go re-watch the Dollars trilogy, you'll waste less time and money that way.

Within hours of posting that most Japanese movies are boring, I found "Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo" when randomly browsing Netflix and immediately started watching it because it had been in my "to watch" list. It was really enjoyable, and Naka Riisa shone brightly like she does with everything I've seen her in. A little bit sad near the end but I somehow managed to not bawl my eyes out.



I saw Matsushita Yuya's name in the credits (as both an actor and one of the songs) but I don't remember seeing his face at ALL.

(EDIT: Oh damn, he was the housemate. Amazing how different he looks with his hair like that.)



I did catch a small time goof - there's a flyer for Young Frankenstein in Ryota's window, but that movie didn't come out until late 1974. So, about three hours into watching this two hour movie, I managed to finish it.



For the entire movie outside of the last fifteen minutes, she stalks the lead romance character. Doesn't talk to him, doesn't try to interact, just flat out creeper stalking. So you watch all these cringe-worthy scenes until the very end, where they do a little reversal and you find out he basically thought it was cute she stalked him or thought his imagination was playing tricks on him (i.e. he looooves her so much he's seeing her everywhere).



So it wasn't a fun romantic comedy because you never saw them interact, and when they did, he acted disinterested by ignoring her. I guess they were trying to play it off as him being shy? I dunno. It is poorly paced, poorly written, and TBH I only finished it out of my love for Rani. It's weird that she was playing someone so young (22 years old) too. I'm not saying she looks old, but I am saying she's outgrown the la-di-da heroines that are prevalent in that genre. It kinda sucks to think that because Rani and the others from her era (SRK, Priety, Saif, ect) are getting older and I am not liking the new blood. :/

I saw Pulp Fiction on TV.

I have the DVD.

I have the Blue Ray (with 6h of bonus material btw, which is amazing).

And now I've even seen it at the cinema !

There was a Tarantino retrospective and they showed most of his movies. I would have loved to also see Jacky Brown, but I came back to Vienna too late.

I was a bit surprised by how full the theatre was. The laughing at even minor details felt like we were in a sea of Tarantino circlejerkers. At times it was a bit too much for my taste (I never ever go to the cinema to watch comedy movies) and it was weird how the left side of the audience was laughing way louder and at different jokes than the right side did.



What I really want to see on the big screen one day are The Big Lebowski, HANA-BI and The Room. And the old Star Wars trilogy maybe, but not the garbage 3D conversions...

People have said that before, but I don't think I'd agree since Tolkien was a thing long before Star Wars. Star Wars came out of nowhere and became an inspiration for generations of artists and filmmakers, where as LotR had been doing that for writers before.
