Not so much Tsunku as the idol industry in general. Wota will take 50 tone deaf Koharu/Rika/Sayu types over someone who can actually belt it out. Belting it out is not kawaii to them.

I've always thought there is a little bit of .... how can I put it... "I'm not perfect and neither is the girl on stage, which is why I like her" kind of thing.



It's the opposite of liking Koda Kumi or Namie Amuro for example, the singers/artists that people try to be.

I feel like that statement is more targeted towards girls who like idols rather than wota. Because most of the time wota will think their idol is perfect regardless of how well they can sing/dance.

Seriously. I've met people who will argue all night about how Sayu/Konno/Koharu can sing.



That said, I think wota tend to gravitate towards "safe" girls who don't really stand out on their own. I feel like in jpop the center or the face is almost never the prettiest, most talented, or interesting girl in the group. Or maybe everyone was like that at first and the ones who didn't benefit from being the fan favorite in the audition (which ensures they're the one who gets the biggest push forever) have to try harder to get noticed and people who are popular from the start don't bother.

Well technically, they can sing. Just not well :)

But Konno got loads better years after she graduated MM.

Hey, in their defense, Konkon and Rika both made huge strides in their singing ability after graduating - Rika with the Ribon no Kishi musical, and Konkon for seemingly no reason at all, LOL.

This is very true, as well. Girls with outspoken personalities or good voices tend to have a more unisex fanbase, because a lot of male wota find them intimidating and prefer someone who doesn't stick out as much. It's a shame because it causes a lot of amazing girls to get overlooked (COUGH COUGH COUGH MASUDA YUKA OF AKB48 COUGH COUGH) because wota are naturally less interested in them, which causes the company to promote them less (Chisato and Haruka are good examples of this in H!P). It's really all a matter of types and your average Japanese neckbeard's type is someone with a more submissive image and personality.

Haruka got screwed because Ayumi showed up as Riho 2.0 and people were impressed by Masaki sucking a lot less in the second bit of audition footage.

There's nothing wrong with the event Vs. It's just something to make a little money off of the people that come to the events. All they ever are now are solo angles of the PVs. I liked the single Vs mainly for the making of features, especially when they used to be like half an hour or longer.
