I can't really tell who's dancing is better, but I have heard couple times from people that Ayumi's a better dancer than Riho. Can someone kindly explain why??

I think Ayumi is better, and I've thought that ever since I started paying attention to 9 & 10th gen. But, I'm sure that most of my opinion is just bias.

I don't notice a difference. If anything, I think there's plenty of potential for both to improve that probably won't ever be realized for various reasons, mostly because of the company and because the jpop dancing standards really aren't too high. The CRAZY ABOUT YOU choreo was very bland and uninspired (none of which is their fault, but also one of the reasons I don't expect them to ever be much better than they are now. H!P's choreographers just aren't really stepping it up) and they were out of sync for most of it, which was disappointing. I think both of them are basically in the same spot now dance-wise as when they joined. And considering they're both far better at dancing than they will ever be at singing, it'd be cool for them to actually take serious advantage of it now rather than the occasional 'dance battle' with lame choreo.

Anderei made a good point that the lack of dancing skill in the rest of the group is more than likely holding them both back.

I don't think it's the rest of the group. I think it's the company and just what's expected from idol groups in general. They could be a group full of Riho and Ayumi's and the choreo would probably still be what it is. When comparing even those two to people who've been seriously trained in dancing, I feel like those two don't even come close. Hence my belief that there's untapped potential that will ever be realized. They could be amazing, but probably won't ever be.

If they think that no matter what they do they will get the same end product, so why even try? You get the situation that Berryz is in. Their performances at live shows for example over the last 2-3 years have been quite frankly average to poor and getting worse each time. The last time I saw them perform live I think I used the phrase "the height of a give a fuck", like they were just sat in limbo waiting for the group to end so they could do something else instead.



Hasn't Riho been "seriously trained in dancing" ? Didn't she attend a pretty major school for performing arts or dancing?



Whatever it may be, I certainly feel like Riho and Ayumi are being held back from achieving their full potential which is a shame. but who knows? Maybe MM's next move is to go all out on the dance moves? Their recent formation dancing has been pretty impressive IMO.

Well, I don't mean it's that the girls think that this is all they expect from them. I'm sure that they'd love more opportunities to do some more challenging dances, but I think H!P's choreographers are used to just doing, you know, idol dancing. Formation based (where I think the difficulty comes more from the amount of people than anything else), para para, that kind of thing. Bring in some different people who would be willing to challenge them a bit more and I think it could definitely happen. Just one more instance of how a bit of outsourcing is something H!P would benefit from.



Also, she attended the Hiroshima Acting School (idk the name) that Perfume went to. But most of the time she spent there she was pretty young. I would think that a lot of it gets stepped up a notch once you start getting older. And I don't think she's ever mentioned if she was trained in a certain type of dancing. My guess is it was more general or she would have showed a bit of it off by now.



The fact that Riho is a lead, and Ayumi seems like she might be on her way to being one just means they're dancing less in general anyway. The more you sing, the less you dance. Riho and Reina spent half of 123 just standing there.



Performance-wise, I guess you're talking about from about when 9th gen joined on? I don't know. I've never seen them personally, and I don't think they're as good as the 07-10 lineup, but I feel like I barely even see most of the girls, even in the MM DVDs lately, and it's hard for me to judge someone I can't see. I watched 2013 Winter and Haruka, Haruna, Eripon and Kanon were almost nowhere to be found. If they seem like they don't give a damn, who knows why. Maybe they're tired, maybe they're disappointed at a lack of lines/screentime/whatever, I can't say.
