Inaba Manaka has had some sore throat issues for awhile. She was examined and was diagnosed with having vocal cord nodules, consulted a doctor and she went ahead with surgery a few days ago. She is currently in post surgery care and taking care of her throat. She will be absent for both parts of the Countdown concert. For the H!P Winter 2019 concerts, she will be limited to only participate in dancing and not be able to sing for now. They will consult with the doctor again and her progress on when she can start singing again.

Manaka says she had some throat issues for sometime just before events and lives. In recent months, she has been taking medicine and drips. At handshake events, sometimes her voice couldn't come out normally. Sometimes she had to alter her singing voice a little. She had some consultation with staff and doctors advised her to get it cured as soon as possible. She underwent surgery. Manaka apologizes for the inconvenience at the end the year and start of the new year. She wants to recover and start singing again.

You know, they'd probably save money in medical bills by hiring someone to teach these girls proper technique and make sure they're applying the lessons.

This reminds me of in Produce48 when they showed Nako how to sing properly and not through her nasal voice and she improved drastically.

So it's been some time since the last case because these (Ai, Sayuki, Chisato and Momoko) were the ones I had in mind, too.

Manaka seems to be the first one who's not a main singer, though.

Not to be THAT person (AKA debbie downer), but if she was going to have to get vocal nodule surgery I think it would've been better if she had just stayed out of the performance world. I know it probably is her dream and all but the poor girl is not physically made to both sing and dance at the same time.... She should just focus on her dancer career imo. But that's just my two cents.

No of course not, there's no way she could have really predicted it!! I more just mean that it's obvious her body isn't made to sing/dance at the same time.... first bad asthma that makes her graduate, then gets vocal nodules upon return. I'm just wondering if she should take it as a sign she should do something less intensive, or just put all her energy into dance and forget singing+dancing :)

I think the asthma likely puts extra strain on her vocal cords, for sure. But I think the idol singing style is still more to blame than anything else, there are even people on Broadway singing/dancing with asthma or other breathing conditions, so it can be done. When I listen to Manaka, she has an exceptional amount of throat tension when she sings and she does that vocal cord "clap" a lot of jpop idols do to produce that cutesy "squeak" at the end of notes which is really traumatic on the vocal cords because it's produced by abruptly SLAMMING the cords together.
