Music Collection Play-Through
Before the outage, I had started reporting on an idea to listen through my entire collection of music and, right when I got into it, we died and I stopped, so I thought this would be a good chance for everyone to join in! We can all see who gets through their collection first or talk about our songs.
Basically, you create a (smart) playlist with EVERYTHING in it. Sort it by album, then track number. If making a smart playlist, pick Podcast-is false and Playlist-is-Music. Choose "match only checked" and pick live updating if you want (it'll keep messing with your overall number when you uncheck songs).
<img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/note.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':dammit:' /> 158 of 3626 - Anataboshi by Milky Way
Coming up: Answer (Flow), anytime (Koda Kumi), Aoi Sports Car no Otoko (Aoiro 7)

I did the same, except that I made my list random and limited to songs with a playcount of 0. Right now it's a hilarious mix of random H!P songs I hadn't played since I got this computer a year ago, random Rock Band songs, random Kpop songs from a Top 100 torrent I got last May, and a few things here and there like DJ Max or Rhythm Tengoku Gold OSTs. My next 12 tracks:
Artist - Song (Album/Single)
v-u-den - Ajisai Ai Ai Monogatari (Suite Room Number 1)
Goto Maki - Daite yo! PLEASE GO ON (Daite yo! PLEASE GO ON)
Billy Idol - White Wedding (part 1) (Billy Idol)
Iida Kaori, Satoda Mai, Ayaka - Chatsumi (The Douyou Pops 2 Haru no Uta shuu)
NieN - Rolling On the Duck (DJ Max Portable 2: Audio Trinity - White Disc)
Tsukishima Kirari - Happy [star] [wavy thing] (Kirarin Revolution Song Selection 2)
HALCALI - Electric Sensei (Electric Body Sensei Mix) (Electric Sensei)
Shakira - Un Poco de Amor (Extended Dancehall 12") (The Remixes)
SG Wannabe - La La La (Melon Today TOP 100)
aural vampire - Hana no Sakigake (Vampire Ecstacy)
Ongaku Gatas - Narihajimeta Koi no BELL (1st GOODSAL)
Wonder Girls - Good Bye (The Wonder Years)

I don't even want to begin thinking about this, since I have around 20,000 songs <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Besides that, I don't really spend very much time on the computer anyway and I'm constantly adding new music as well.

You could put it on an iPod and do it bit by bit. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/w00t.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> My rule for new music is, play it as it lays. If it's new, I'd probably listen to it all before I get to it on the list anyway.

Re: Music Collection Play-Through
I think I might do this, at least as a way of eliminating songs I don't really need to keep. Back in the days of Napster/soulseek/etc I used to hear one song I liked by an artist and then go download their whole discography and didn't really give them a proper listen before saving them. I usually play my ipod on shuffle, so if something comes up that I don't really like I delete it, but the shuffle feature tends to play the same songs over and over.
So uh. I haven't really made playlists in iTunes before, what's a "smart" playlist?

Hold Shit while clicking the plus button on the bottom left of the iTunes window. The leftmost button should turn into a little gear. There you can pick all of the rules for your playlist. This can be anything from picking certain songs you've added recently, your ihghest rated songs, etc. Check my first post for my recommended rules. Each hyphen seperates the part of the rule. Click on the plus next to a rule to add a new rule or minus to remove that particular rule. The Podcast-is-false rule is very important because it can mess with syncing podcasts.

It's a playlist that you make based on certain criteria. So if you want a list of all songs from the year 2008 that were track 2s by Morning Musume, you could make a playlist based on that. Of if you want all songs with the genre of JPop that have a playcount of zero (i.e., you've never heard before), you can make that as well and burn though it.
The thing about smart playlists is that they can update automatically if you select Live Updating. For example if you made that second example, of songs with the JPop genre that you've never heard before (playcount = 0 or playcount is less than 1), and you played one of the songs from it, it would remove itself from the playlist because it wouldn't meet the criteria anymore. And if you added a new song to iTunes with the JPop genre, it would add itself to that playlist.
So it's useful to keep things organized. Some of the smart playlists I have:
- 5 *s: Every song I've rated a 5.
- 100 Random Unplayed: Playcount is 0, Limit to 100 items selected by random. This is the one I mentioned above, and is my effort to go through stuff I haven't played. I limited it to 100 at random so I can synch it to my mp3 player and have those songs automatically put on there, since it doesn't have a lot of space and I can't put every song into it. So I'll listen to a few songs on the road, then when I synch it to my computer it'll remove those songs from it and add more to get the playlist back to 100 songs.
- Recently Added, Unplayed: Date Added is in the last month, Playcount is 0: Me trying to solve the problem you're having, basically, trying to give stuff I add a proper listen.
I have a few more, but they're mostly boring. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lmfao:' />
Also, it should be an option in the File menu, under File -> New Smart Playlist.

Re: Music Collection Play-Through
Oh yeah, we were doing this! I totally got distracted by customizing my foobar and forgot that this is what I wanted to do.
Funny and interesting to see that sadude and I have some of the exact same autoplaylists/smart playlists. I have a 5 star playlist (it's called ★★★★★ for me though <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /weeeh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':dammit:' /> ), a "0 playcount" playlist, and an "added within the last 4 weeks" playlist. One slightly annoying thing with foobar (and maybe iTunes does this as well, I don't know) is that with the 0 playcount autoplaylist, it removes the song while it's playing, since the count goes up from 0 to 1 about halfway through the song. I solved this problem by adding an extra rule, OR %last_played% DURING LAST 20 MINUTES. It's still not ideal since some songs are longer than 20 minutes, but I guess I can deal with that.
Anyway... I just made a snapshot of all the songs in my MP3 directory, and shuffled it. I have a plugin that removes each song from the playlist as its played so my playlist will slowly shrink as I get further down. It's about 6000 songs which really isn't too bad, it would've been a lot more if my HD hadn't crashed recently.
Here's the first 5 songs on my playlist:
0001. 桃井はるこ - [ファミソン8BIT momo-i #07] ふしぎなメルモ
0002. DEPAPEPE - [Let's Go!!! #11] いい日だったね。
0003. Plaid - [Twin Figures #05] silversum
0004. MEG - [MAGIC #03] MAGIC (NEMESIS MIX)
0005. Konami - Michiru Yamane - [Castlevania - Symphony Of The Night OST #08] Castlevnia SOTN - Marble Gallery
Wow, my taste is awesome! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nceman.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':danceman:' />

I wonder if one exists for iTunes? That would be really useful.
My problem is that when I make the smart playlist (thanks everyone for the info) of my entire library minus all things classical and easy listening-y (i.e. things I play when I'm going to bed), everything is in order by artist. I would much rather listen to it shuffled up than a huge chunk of one artist all at once. But since I'd be listening on my Ipod at work/in the car, is there a way to do that? Will whatever way I have the playlist sorted in iTunes carry over when I upload it to my iPod? Like if I order it by song title, then it's pretty shuffled up in terms of artist. Or is there another way to shuffle a playlist and then have it upload to your ipod to play in that order?

If you add the "Play Count-equals-0 condition, it will remove songs that play through, but that will limit it to only songs you've never heard. I don't know if there's a plugin for iTunes to allow that to happen with songs you've already heard before.
For your second question, yes. If you choose to sort by playlist number (the sorting column with no title (it may have an arrow)) and click the shuffle button, the playlist will shuffle and will play in the order it shows. Check-un-checking the shuffle re-shuffles the list. If the playlist is sorted like this, it will show up in this exact order in your playlist menu on your iPod.

Re: Music Collection Play-Through
Yeah I sorta thought about making my playlist out of playcount=0 songs... But for some reason I decided against it, partly because my playcount statistics aren't entirely accurate. I also have a "history" plugin which lists everything I play, so I can go back and look at what songs were played (and maybe rate them), which is nice.
Anyway, I do believe there's a way for iTunes to do this, since I got this foobar plugin after reading about a comparable feature in another player. It may be called something like "Pruning Mode" or so. I could be confused with Winamp and iTunes though.
Next 5:
0001. Toshihiko Horiyama - [Apollo Justice Ace Attorney OST #27] Turnabout Succession
0002. The Beach Boys - [Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of The Beach Boys (Disc 2) CD2 #27] I Love To Say Da Da
0003. Shoko Nakagawa - [Big☆Bang!!! #05] Brilliant Dream -shoko planet mix-
0004. The Shadows - [Greatest Hits #27] Genie With The Light Brown Lamp(1)
0005. xerxes - [unreleased] defuse
