Quarterly H!P Rewind- Quarter 1 2009
sadude and I were talking today, and we were both amazed at last week's sales upset. If you don't know what I'm talking about, Mano Erina's single Otome no Inori sold around twice as many copies as Morning Musume's 9th album PLATINUM 9 Disco. The only problem was, we didn't really have a thread to post it in. Thus, a new project was born! Every quarter, a new thread will pop up with sales data. Since this quarter is just about over, this will be more of a review than an on-going listing of who sold the most copies. Take a peek!
Single Rankings - January ~ March 2009 (Sales thanks to jpm, hell project)
#1 - Morning Musume - Naichau Kamo (50,313)
#2 - Satoda Mai ft. Goda Kyodai - Bye Bye (44,028)
#3 - Berryz Koubou - Dakishimete Dakishimete (26,882) [NOT FINAL]
#4 - Buono! - co.no.mi.chi (22,735)
#5 - Mano Erina - Otome no Inori (20,812) [NOT FINAL]
#6 - Kusumi Koharu - Hapi Hapi Sunday! (14,468)
#7 - Shugo Chara Egg / Guardian 4 - Shugo! Shugo! (10,899)
#8 - Aya Matsuura - Chocolate Damashii (4,028)
#9 - Yuki Maeda - Kenchana ~Daijoubu~ (1,241)
Album Rankings - January ~ March 2009
#1 - Buono! - Buono!2 (19,857)
#2 - Morning Musume - Platinum 9 Disc (14,704) [NOT FINAL]
#3 - c-ute - 4 Akogare MY STAR (13,724)
#4 - Berryz Koubou - Special Best 1 (13,163)
#5 - Kusumi Koharu - Kirari Best (8,933) [NOT FINAL]
#6 - Aya Matsuura - Omoi Afurete (4,873)
#? - Icecream Musume - First Zuibang! (Ranked #11th)
Announced, but yet to be released
Seishun Boku / Seishun Ore - Mari Yaguchi and Airband
So wow, this has been a pretty interesting quarter in sales. Erina single handedly beat out the previous solo queen Kusumi Koharu with her, what many people to be somewhat dull, single Otome no Inori. Not only that, she outsold Platinum 9 Disc that came out the same week.
What do you guys think about this quarter in releases?

2 questions
1. Is that the Chinese or Taiwanese release for IceCream Musume? I don't know if anyone in Japan would care for such a thing.
2. Can someone explain Mano Erina? She seriously just fell out of the sky and had everyone squirming in their pants in 2 seconds. She has a very standard nice-girl appeal for an idol, but I'm pretty shocked at her big fan base . She does the standard pervy idol pictures in Purepure and whatnot, her song was okay - nothing outstanding, and it is cute that she plays piano. But still, what the heck?! Has she been on the music shows shilling her songs? Is this all just wota buying up 10 copies of her stuff? I really don't get it.

She's been in a couple random shows (not the major ones though) and appeared in Up To Boy a couple times, I think. Probably the biggest thing controlling her sales, though, is that there are four different versions of the single, 3 of which carry a lottery ticket to win a chance to meet her.

That's the Taiwanese sales from G-Music. They don't give numbers of sales, last I checked, hence only the highest chart point. They did really well, last I remember though.

For some reason, I always thought CDs never did that well in Japan? I'm honestly not sure, I've gotten my Japanese Culture Knowledge from, you know, the internet so I wouldn't be surprised if I've just been rocking a bit of completely false knowledge for years and years. But that and it being Erina's debut single/4 copy wotabait marketing could attribute to that, at least. That girl having any kind of success or CD sales at ALL is a whole new discussion in itself XD

Re: Quarterly H!P Rewind- Quarter 1 2009
Ok I love this thread because I'm dumb like that. Anyway.
Album sales!
Look at this! Berryz and C-ute have been stuck at 14k and 15k respectively. It seems no matter how their single sales have increased nothing has happened in the album department (both of the most recent albums from these groups sold 13k).
Morning Musume is back sliding pretty steadily down from 44k to 15k-ish (Cover Yuu and Platinum 9).
Single sales!
Morning Musume rebounded about 5k from Pepper Keibu. 50k looks to be about normal for MM singles since 2006 so good for the girls.
Buono! kind of got punished as it would seem that they are on the decline (22k down from 26k).
Koharu is at the end of her era. Her sales have slide since Balalaika (I believe, I can't check though. HELP!) and her show is coming to an end is it not? I wonder what is next for her.
Berryz Koubou have done well but they are kinda short of previous successes (Dschinghis Khan 37k, Yuke Yuke Monkey Dance 33k).
Maeda Yuki HELL YES! Huge improvement on her Ai Ai Daiko sales (~700).
What does it mean?
SPECULATION AHOY!
Unfortunately we don't have much in the way of digital download information. Although that would hardly explain the increase in single sales. I've always thought that everyday fans would just pick up the albums (I mean hell, that what I do) so I kind of look at the album decline for MM as pretty telling although I'm sure some of it can be attributed to things like iTunes and what not. BK and C-ute seem to be holding their ground fairly well despite the advent of digital sales, perhaps they would have gone up.
Buono! seems to be in trouble as they have been steadily sliding UFA needs to do something for them or they'll be dead-weight. They are sharing the Shugo Chara publicity with Shugo Chara Eggs now so they seem to have split the singles sales with them to some extent.

Re: Quarterly H!P Rewind- Quarter 1 2009
I think what hurt Morning Musume was the fact they released their single and then a few weeks later it's all Album news. They should have just waited. Did Onna ni Sachi Are and Kanashimi Twilight REALLY need to be on the album again? They were on the All singles, Tsunku really could have waited, but NO! No he couldn't.
I wonder how Japanfiles did with their release of the Platinum9 album?
I'm surprised at how poorly Aya did, not that it was a steller song or anything.

This is a place where a signature goes. Enjoy some Airi instead.

I was surprised by the sales of Manoeri's single, but I've noticed she's gotten alot of airplay on the radio here. (I don't listen to the radio except in, say, supermarkets. But the songs I remember hearing every now and then is this one and Utada - Come Back To Me, sooo.)

Yeah Mano is always on the radio here. And she did do a few promo slots on tv and radio shows before her major debut came out. Plus all the magazine articles, though most are in male oriented magazines. Not pervy ones, but tv guides and music guides that always have gravure photos included.
When I go into supermarkets I always hear either Mano's singles or lately the Shugo Chara/Kirarin songs. I've actually heard most of HP's newer releases going in and out of department stores. But maybe I just have weird luck as eve when a midi is playing somewhere it's usually HP.

I once heard that crazy Berryz Koubou Jingisu Khan (sp? whatever) remix and was amused. "Those chipmunk voices are my girls!!"

The last MM albums had horrible sales, I don't really think, it's anything special to top that...
Look at Mai's single, it sold more than twice of Erina's.
Although of course Mai's been in the business a bit longer and caters to a different audience most probably. However, Aya's sales horrible.

I see "20,812" and "14,704", not really "double", unless you meant something completely different which you did not say. =P

Yeah, I wrote part of that when I first read that it was 30k singles, not 20k. My bad!
