Not on no 360 controller it ain't. You need to get yourself an arcade stick, or at the very least a fighting pad. P3 controller isn't horrible though.

Re: Street Fighter 4
Try and find the Hori EX2. It's what I use and I love it. The SF4 sticks I hear are shit and have tons of problems with them, and the only real problem I've heard with EX2 is that it craps out early (I've had mine for well over a year and it still works fine) and that it feels flimsy-ish? Honestly, it's perfectly fine if you don't plan on playing high-level. It's also godly cheap.
Re: Street Fighter 4
I just came back from a weekend of Street Fighter 4, and it's definitely an awesome game. My experience with the sticks was really good. I haven't tried the expensive ones, but even the cheap SF4 sticks felt really solid. What's also great about them is that you can easily replace the buttons if you want different ones (as well as the stick itself, faceplate, etc).
I really like the game, which proves to myself at least that I haven't grown out of enjoying fighting games, but rather that all fighting games nowadays are shit (except SF4, that is). Really good gameplay and the soundtrack kicks ass. I love that they made different arrangements for each character in addition to stage themes, that's just dedicated. Even though I would've liked it to be 2D, the backgrounds are super active and that is really fun when watching the game, without being too distracting when playing it. The unlockable art is also really cool. But my favorite thing about the game has to be the opening video and the various Special videos. That stuff is just stunning, I've never seen anything so cool.
The only complaint... well, the only two complaints I have are: Seth is a bastard, and the animation videos are really ugly. I actually think the in-game cutscenes before you fight your rival look better than the stupid opening and closing animations.
Also, I really started to dig the EXILE song that's in the opening. It's catchy, dammit. D:

Listen up, fuck-face. This game is too good for words, and it far outlived any expectations I may have had. It plays amazingly well, and is neither too complex nor too simplistic. The graphics are gorgeous, which is something I couldn't tell properly until I played it myself. The music is amazing, varied, and quite original. Many of these same things are the aspects that drew us both to Battle Fantasia, even though a majority of folks were not fans of that game (for some damned reason). But again, if you wanna chalk that up to opinion, then fine. But as for factual praise: the online play is probably some of the best I've experienced in a game to date. I played for hours on-end with JT, who lives in Japan, and we didn't have any lag whatsoever. I've played countless matches with Sherwin, whose house has a horrid DSL connection, and yet we were STILL completely free of lag. The only lag I've seen, at all, was in a couple of ranked matches I played. Likely against people who don't deserve to live in the first place, who use a rural DSL to run like five PC's at once... and no less than 1500 torrents. But yeah, combine the lack of lag in this game with the usual wearing of headsets, and it mimics playing local multiplayer very well. This is something I've waited for (in a fighter) for ages now. Mind you, Battle Fantasia also has pretty flawless online play... it just sucks that none of our friends have the game. Whereas with SF4, I've already managed to play it against seven different friends in just the first four days of owning it.
As for achievements, no they don't suck. Most of them are cumulative, and you will get those without even trying. After less than one week of playing online, I've already got almost all of the online achievements. You get shit-tons of medals after each match, so getting 1000 of those is actually nothing. And as for playing 500 total matches, I've already played almost 175 anyhow. Just by playing against friends, for fun. It's nice NOT to hafta boost online achievements for once (although you can boost them easily, if you wanted to). The single-player stuff, again, is not too bad. You can easily get 75% of the achievement points from this game in the first week or two of owning it. There's some tough and/or time-consuming ones at the end, yes. But if anything, it's nice to have those, because getting 1000 points in this game will really mean something if a person can pull it off. Whereas with SoulCalibur IV, while the game took a while to complete... it was mostly due to how time-consuming certain tasks were. There were not many achievements that required a huge amount of skill in that game.
I got it today. It feels like what would happen if CvS2 and SF2 had a baby. The only thing I really don't like is how ridiculously small the window is for linking normals. IT SHOULDN'T TAKE ME 10 MINUTES IN TRIAL MODE TO LINK MP INTO HP!!! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... dammit.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> These trials are going to take me forever.
Those stage-five trials can be tricky at first, despite only having 2-3 sections in them at most. But keep in mind, it's not just about the timing. When it says, for example, to link LP to crouching MK. When pulling off standard attacks, you often want to hold either forwards or backwards on the stick, in order to hit the opponent slightly sooner/later than you would have when standing neutral. So in some cases, like the one above, you would hit low punch while standing neutral, and then hold the stick forward as you press the medium kick. It can make a big difference, and I've ended up passing most of the stage-five trials on my first attempts this way. In some cases, you may also need to adjust the timing, which means just delaying the second hit slightly.
I've been playing the 360 version for the last couple days and love it. I was prepared for disappointment after not quite connecting with SF3, SFA3, and ST, but this is just perfect. I wish I could get better at controlling it without having to buy additional hardware. I know it's possible.
Possible, of course. There are people who win serious-level tournaments using standard controllers. I've even seen this with the 360 one, despite its shoddy directional pad. But it typically takes an insane amount of practice to become that good with a joypad. It'd be forced adaptation, basically. Fighting games were designed to function with a joystick, and that is the only way you're gonna get the timing and precision you need to pull of stuff with proper ease. Much in the same way that music games were designed to work with their own special instrument controllers. Sure, you can get really good (and even flawlessly combo songs) on Guitar Hero, just using a DualShock or other such controller. But in order to achieve the ease of precision and true feel that the game was designed for, you need to play it with a guitar.
I'll second the recommendation for grabbing the Hori EX2 stick. I've had one since buying my 360, and it's a godsend. It's the same design and feel from Hori's Dreamcast and Saturn sticks, which were always my favorites by-far. I seriously can't play a fighting game properly without one. And keep in mind, they're not just great for fighters. Shoot 'em Up games are also designed to work with joysticks, with a few rare exceptions. They play about a thousand times better on a stick, typically. And then a number of 2D and classic Live Arcade games, again, work really well with this stick. From TMNT Classic Arcade, to games like Castle Crashers. Anything where you need to constantly slam on buttons, and don't need a second stick or a vast numbers of buttons to control it, the stick can work better. And you can get these sticks online for fairly cheap, from what I hear. Like less than thirty dollars brand-new, much of the time. The American releases were limited, and they put special ones out at the same time as DOA4, VF5, and SC4. But in Japan, aside from those same limited-edition versions... they've also printed regular runs of the sticks. So those are your best bet.

Re: Street Fighter 4
Yeah, I figured out the linking thing. You actually have to wait for the animation to end before going for the next move, cause you can't cancel out. Now I'm stuck on Chun's last hard trial, which is ridiiiiculous.
Also yeah this game is incredible in basically every sense. The only thing I would really change would be to make the stages a bit smaller (Which would disappointedly make the backgrounds less gorgeous, but the stages are huge and only cater so stupid runaway players.) and to give penalties for disconnecting in ranked online.
So who do you guys main? :> I play Chun mostly, but I like to play Rose once in a while too. I used to play more Rose than Chun, but I couldn't get the timing for the drill scarf combos, though her air grab was extremely nice to have, especially compared to Chun who has no good anti-air, except maybe her EX Spinning Bird Kick, and even then, the damage it does is miniscule. :< Also Chun's Ultra is fucking terrible compared to Rose's.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but when you land a hit, the opponent's lifebar flashes and the flash supposedly tells you when to link the next move. I haven't figured out yet if it's the beginning or the end of the flash that counts.

Dan's back dash is reason alone to have all the space you want. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /lmfao.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
I like Viper a lot so far, she's got great speed, and a helluva lot of reach with her standing forward roundhouse. Her Seismic Hammer's not all that useful (and I can't tell you the number of times I accidentally pulled off an EX of that when I was going for her Ultra,) but that Thunder Knuckle of hers is flat-out superb, especially when used to counter a jump-in attack. Her VS-style super jump's pretty handy too.
I like El Fuerte too, if only for the sheer nuttiness factor & that you can keep away from most opponents for as long as you want, haha. Rufus has some pretty good moves for such a fatass, and Abel will be the dead last character I play as. He looks like Bobby Flay on 'roids & he's french to boot.
Ken & Ryu are my go-to guys. I've only played through the game with 5 or 6 characters so far. The CPU is entirely too grabby, especially with Abel, Honda & Seth. A friend suggested I just set the game to Easy & unlock everyone, and if I'd have been in the same room when he said it I'd have thrown him out the fucking window. Fucker just doesn't GET it. I blame Pokemon.
Oh, I've also heard that Seth evolves according to your skill. Like he gets tougher as you get better, etc. Anyone confirm this? He DOES seem harder to deal with lately, but I assumed that was more to do with my lack of familiarity with the characters I used later on.

There's a pulse that goes through the lifebar from left to right and the moment it reaches the right end of the lifebar is when you're supposed to hit the next move (this is for the 2P that is, I guess it's reversed for the 1P lifebar). I haven't managed to take that much advantage of this and I usually have better luck getting links to combo by watching when hit animation of my character ends.

Seismo is a good move. You can use it to counter fireballs (depending on distance and timing, it beats them or at least trades) and on hit you can follow it up with combo ending in an ultra. Like with thunder knuckle you should use the fake version of the move every once in a while to confuse and bait the opponent.
I like Viper too and the way she plays. She's just so execution heavy character that I can't really do most of her advanced stuff on a consistent basis yet. I am currently maining Rufus, because dive kick lockdowns are so much fun. I'd like to play some charge character too but they all seem so boring to me. Maybe I'll give boxer a try.

I've always used Ryu, but decided to stay away from him for a while. When I know I've got a lagless connection I use Cammy since I need precise timing with her. Most other times I break out my homeboy Edmund. I've been having fun with Sakura against the computer, to I might start playing her as well, especially her "scarred-all-to-hell gymsuit version."

Yeah, Viper is hella hard. I can't even do her special move cancels, which seem to be a big part of her in competitive play.
And how the hell are you supposed to play El Fuerte? I can't figure out what's effective against a human player.
EDIT: Or Sakura for that matter. She plays so different from a shoto. The only thing I can think of mixing up into her EX tatsumaki and following it up with a shououken.

Bring it on!

Re: Street Fighter 4
I'm never gonna play this game online. Fuck all the scrubs playing Akuma and jabbing at the air when they got their ultra meter full. Too dumb to live, seriously.

I'd kill to fight an Akuma. I've yet to see one. Instead, it's 75% (horrible) Ken players. I appreciate the free win, but you're allowed to lose with other characters, you know?

Maybe it's a Europe thing. Or perhaps a lot of people haven't unlocked Akuma yet and pick Ken as the closest alternative?

Re: Street Fighter 4
Beating an Akuma ultra is really easy. Just jump straight up. The ultra itself does tons of damage, but it's really easy to dodge unless you're actually playing a good Akuma.
The American Live base is actually a lot better than I expected. There's still your usual shoto-scrubs, but during certain times in the day I rarely even play any shotos.
Blanka and Guile seems to be characters scrubs love too, though. Blankas usually fail because they don't know how to play him safely and just roll all over the damn place, but Guile is really easy to cheese with. His crouching short and roundhouses are really really annoying. Every Guile I play just turtles at the other end of the screen throwing sonic booms, and then spams shorts/roundhouses on knockdown, which AFAIK are impossible to beat. Stupid. >:T
EDIT: And thanks for that Fuerte vid!
AND SOMEONE FUCKING PLAY PLAYER MODE WITH ME SO I CAN PLAY WITH OTHER CHARACTERS. :<
When playing folks, I try and use all the characters as much as I can (rather than specializing in people). But Cammy has always been my favorite, and she remains my fave in this game as well. Sakura is another long-time favorite that made a good transition to SF4. I've also really liked playing as Rose, someone who I wasn't a huge fan of back in the Alpha days. She's really good in here; Her anti-air throw and Super/Ultra are all quite awesome. As for charge characters, Honda is definitely my fave. I've also really been liking Bison. And I mean Mike Bison, the boxer... which many folks will call "Balrog." I just can't bring myself to call him a blatantly-incorrect and very Spanish name. Yay for the useless swapping of names in the SF2 days. They shoulda just changed Bison's name somehow, like maybe called him "Buffalo," and left the other three bosses the same.
Chun Li is awesome, and I'd love to learn her as well. But she's also one of the toughest people to get really good with. If you can manage that, it'll be a nice bragging right. And god, yeah, some of her Hard Trials are absurd. Same problem I'd had with Cammy. Her last three aren't terrible, but the first two are a nightmare. You hafta string together like four different normal attacks, and then tie on a special move to a super. Getting the timing down, for all four or five normal hits, is a nightmare. They coulda removed a couple of those normal attacks from the middle of the process, and then the combo could actually be useful in real gameplay. But instead, no, they go for the most absurd and unnecessarily-difficult thing possible. As many hits as you can physically put into a single combo. And I really wanted Cammy's icons and such, so I suffered through it. Many hours later, ugh.
Haha, damn straight. I just beat it on Medium with everyone, from the get-go. To get used to playing with each of them and whatnot. Plus there's an achievement for clearing it on Medium or above with all characters. Playing on the lowest difficulty is a joke, and the computer may as well not even react at all. The only time that the easiest difficulty can be useful, if someone needs it, is to unlock Gouki or Gouken (if folks are worried about not losing a round). But otherwise, yeah, even Medium mode isn't too tough with most of the people. The only characters that I had trouble beating Seth with were Dhalsim, El Fuerte, and Viper. I've managed to beat it on Hardest difficulty with a handful of the people, too. Only certain characters have trouble beating Seth, because getting around his cheapness requires certain moves (with certain reach and quickness).
Oh, I've also heard that Seth evolves according to your skill. Like he gets tougher as you get better, etc. Anyone confirm this? He DOES seem harder to deal with lately, but I assumed that was more to do with my lack of familiarity with the characters I used later on.
I don't believe so. You're probably right, on what you said at the end. Like with Zangief, Sagat, or the Shoto people... I can always beat him with no issue. Even on the hardest difficulty setting. Whereas with a couple of the new folks, I always seemed to have trouble (even on Medium). Getting a good pattern, to get around his cheapness, relies a lot on luck as well. I've had times where I've gotten a perfect on him, with no issue, thanks to luck (and him sticking to a precise pattern like I wanted him to).

Not even close, more like 30th. 15 of those are just the core Street Fighter 1-4 games & their Turbo/Champion editions alone. Then you've got the EX & VS series, a few revisited editions for home & portable systems, and of course the, er... majesty.. of the Street Fighter: The Movie game. And yes I realize you're referring to series, but the way I see it, each individual game generally had 1 or 2 updated editions which not only mandated a new board (or at least another dedicated cabinet) but a seperate home edition as well. Besides, it's more fun to say WHOA SHIT 30 GAMES WHAT MADNESS!!!

PS3 got returned because of defects. I'll have it again soon. So our battle is on hold for a bit.
