I'm thinking of guys like Sugita Jirou, Akira Inaba, Gen Takayama, and Hirofumi Banba ("Sachiko"). We see them singing with the H!P girls on "Uta Doki Pop Classics," usually in duets with performers like Nacchi, Maki and Yuko. They all play guitar and sing. What type of music do they sing? Is there a Japanese word for it? Or would it be accurately called Japanese folk or Japanese country & western? Who would be their American equivalents? Bob Dylan? Richie Havens? Phil Ochs? Willie Nelson? Or someone younger?
The ironic thing is that I should be more familiar with their American counterparts since they would have performed when I was growing up. But I'm really not.
