Beautiful Katamari above all.

There is no PS3 version currently. I loved the first too games and I still have them, which is partly why I'm getting an older backwards-compatible system. Also, I still haven't played any of the PS2 Shin Megami Tensei games and want to.

If by "perfect" you meant "exactly like all the other ones" then I believe you're correct. That series is so fucking trite now, I got bored of the last 2 games within about an hour.

I watched my friend play through the first few missions of this, and it looks utterly spectacular. One of the prettiest games out there for sure, beautiful engine and great art direction. Seems like a lot of the things that were slightly annoying about the first game were fixed, and I already loved the first game. Even the goofy Dan Brown-retarded plot somehow adds to the experience.

Definitely something I want to get, I just forgot it was coming out so soon.

I've heard mostly good things about Demon's Souls, but I don't think I'm masochistic enough to enjoy something that hard.

I ended up buying Little Big Planet. The system isn't hooked up, but I will report back with impressions later.

If you can handle AC in Japanese, I think Tomodachi Collection should be easy enough. I think it's almost impossible to screw things up majorly in TC due to not knowing what something means. With AC, you can probably do more damage (I'm sure you've played it before though) but in general, more can go wrong.

Also, I bought a bright orange jumpsuit in the shop and I was inspired to create the lead singer of Polysics. I made his rectangle glasses by using rectangle eyebrows, making them as large as possible, then reducing the space between each side.

The good thing about having a Japanese 360 is that now virtually every new title in the US region plays on a Japanese system. It's looking like NTSC plays on J-NTSC no problem, but not vice versa.

Although I don't know if there's any titles that are US and not also EU as well... But there might be one or two. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have that option, at least.

Did you actually try the game yet? It controls like a fucking cardboard box on a dial-up modem, its atrocious. Your guy attacks like 2 seconds after you hit the attack button and the camera is horrendous. I am now playing "downloading update data", which looks like it might take all night. Little Big Planet in the morning then.

On the positive side, the previous owner of the system filled the harddrive with demos for me.
wow... the console/microsoft discussion came to an end two months and nobody wanted to write about it anymore. There was really no point in reviving that topic since I made my point clear and there was nothing to add from either side.
See but, I read this whole thread from end to end. And I don't recall you ever backing up your hatred for Microsoft with any solid reasoning. That's the first reason I replied, was to refute the one point you did try to make about them. To state how Sony was no better, when they entered the console market in 1994. If you haven't actually read my reply above, please do. But I also remember at least one person putting your quotes back to back, and proving how you contradicted yourself. And that was, in the end, all you did by trying to act high and mighty about the console defense stuff. The argument also managed to get a lot of people yelling at Steve, calling him a blatant troll or something. That's the other part of why I replied, to show how Steve's argument was at least based in some sort of evidence. Even though he went overboard with its execution, as usual, no one's denying that. Your argument, on the other hand, was far closer to the definition of trolling.

Don't get me wrong, I'm in no way angry at you. Nor do I have any less respect for you because of your position in that argument. I just don't like when people say they "hate" something for completely unsubstantiated reasons. Steve does that all the time, and I'm always yelling at him for it. He also happens to be one of my best friends, so obviously I'm not gonna look down upon someone for their belligerence. As long as someone is capable of seeing the light, once they get more evidence, which he usually does. That or, if they can back up their negative statements with evidence, which he also does quite often. He just needs to learn to be less polarizing about how he treats that resulting opinion. Too often it comes across as either complete love or complete hate. There need to be more things that fall in-between somewhere. In fact, that's where the majority of things should be falling.
Yeah, I ended up going for neither jp.360 nor PS3 in the end. I can't think of more than two or three games I'd really want to play on the PS3, and while I can think of 6 titles I want for the 360, I just ended up saving some money and buying the PS2 cave shmups I didn't have instead. Additional benefit: the 4:3 TV I have hooked my PS2 to can actually be put on its side!
Win! There were a ton of amazing Cave shooters released for PS2. Most of them had a supplemental DVD, too, which included videos of crazy Japanese players that could 1CC every possible game. And of course, none of these titles came to America. You'll have a blast with those, and another "w00t" for having a flippable television set. Is it a CRT? I guess some of those can still be flipped, if they were the type with perfectly-square cases.
I don't know who said what, but here's my schtick: I don't really like online multiplayer. I don't have a next-gen, online system (still rockin my PS2 ), and I can't say I've had a noticeably positive experience with multiplayer on PC, not that it's been bad either. It's just nothing special. I don't get any sort of close relationship and I don't really play with anyone consistently. Small fish, big pond I guess, but I can see someone not really caring and just wanting human opponents. I'm much more in favor of local multiplayer and, in my eyes, if a game doesn't have that, regardless of online, it doesn't really have multiplayer. And of course, some online games don't even HAVE local which just astounds me. I don't want to play with some random people and I think that's kind of the reason for the whole MW2 no dedicated servers dealie. I'd rather play against a smaller pool of people of my choosing and have a constant place to do so at.
Well again, that's how 360 has completely changed online gaming for me. Much like you, I saw no need for online multiplayer. Even in the days of PS2 and the original Xbox, when the speeds and lag were improved vastly. My biggest gripe was not being able to play against my local friends, the ones I loved playing when we visited each others' houses. Plus, at that time, there were very few games with online support. But this has changed since about 2007 or so. 360 has online support for basically every multiplayer game on the system. And not just the current-gen polygon fests like FPS games and such. A majority of the best stuff is on Live Arcade. Brand new titles, remakes, and such... done in the solid 2D style we love and with seamless online play.

Since 2007, and especially in the past year or so, everyone and their mother has been getting a 360. It's to the point where dozens and dozens of my intimately close local friends own the system. There's also a huge number of outta state (and outta country) friends who have one. So when I play multiplayer online, it's against the same exact people that I would play multiplayer with locally. But since I work full-time, and live paycheck-to-paycheck, I can't just drive out and stop by my friends' houses to play games whenever I want. I used to do that, when I was younger, but times have changed. Whereas, now I can play against the exact same people on my 360, but can do this anytime I want (from my livingroom). I'm not a fan of playing against strangers, and I only do it very rarely. If that's all you have access to, then I can definitely see how it would ruin the experience. It's all about circumstances.
On multiplayer as a whole, I remember the time when multiplayer wasn't this huge selling point or necessary feature. If a game doesn't fit having multiplayer, it should have it. (I haven't played the mp on this, but this is from an outsiders' viewpoint) Uncharted 2 is really fun, greatly executed, and an all around great single-player game and I can't understand why it needed a multiplayer aspect. I play it and I don't think, "I wish I was playing with the guy next to me." I don't. I don't think Super Mario Brothers needed multiplayer and, my experiences on the DS remake fully understand that feeling: because it doesn't work as a gameplay mechanic. Going from linear adventure platform to 2D Balloon Fight with not balloons is just bad and I feel sorry for my friend who I naively coerced into playing with me. I haven't played it either, but I don't have any hope for the Wii's version either.
This part, I wholeheartedly agree with. I can't stand how companies feel the need to add a multiplayer mode to every damned game that comes out nowadays. Even to the series that were flawless as a single-player experience. Recent examples include BioShock, Condemned, Uncharted, and etc. They're trying to appeal to the casual, mass-market audience... which they believe will gobble up anything that can be promoted as a "fun party experience." Which is silly, of course, because there's already TONS of amazing multiplayer games out there (ones which are MP at their core). Any extra sales they can squeeze out of a title, I guess. It's sad, too, that so much time and money is being devoted to developing lousy multiplayer modes for these games. When in theory, it could be devoted to further-improving the single-player mode of the title. That or, god forbid, releasing the game sooner. I know a lot of BioShock2's delay time has things to do with tweaking the multiplayer. Let's hope this proves beneficial, and that the mode is actually fun.
My 360 finally died. It was a launch model, which are famously error-prone, so I'm impressed that it lasted this long. I do intend to get it fixed eventually, but I'm also going to get a PS3 (80GB fat-type), which I was planning on doing sooner or later anyway. What PS3-exclusives do you recommend? I am definitely getting Little Big Planet, Infamous, and Valkyria Chronicles, but not all at once.
Four years isn't bad for a launch model, not at all. And the systems produced in the past three years have a vastly lower failure rate. Among people I know, and those that actually treat their systems well, I've heard zero complaints of later-model systems breaking down. And you're lucky to find an 80gb PS3! I'm jealous, because that's the model I wanted (back when they were still available new). Those were the last models with the emotion chip from PS2, granting full backwards-compatibility with PS1 and PS2 titles. So in that, you have a three-in-one super console, along with the ability to dump and create infinite virtual memory cards on the HDD. When they took out backwards-compatibility from PS3, they ruined a lot of what made me want to own it.

Anyhow, as far as recommendations, here are some of the ones I've played for a decent amount of time and really enjoyed. The first ones I'd get, if/when I can get a PS3 at some point, are Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, Fat Princess, and Uncharted 2. I've heard good things about Demon's Souls, from most people, but have never seen or played it myself. Gran Turismo is fantastic, if you're into racing games. Also heard rave reviews of the Ratchet & Clank game(s). And since you like RPG's, Valkyria Chronicles is a must. Disgaea 3 is also very sweet, but it's the time-consuming sort of monstrosity that I'd never personally play. There's also a handful of really fun PSN-exclusive downloadable games, though most of the names elude me at the moment.
Sounds like Fable 2 then! That's too bad, but I'm still curious about it. Not that I'm gonna get a PS3 anytime soon, of course.
Steve doesn't even like Fable 2, despite it being on 360. So that's not a good title to use if you wanna stick it to him. Then again, he's never really played it, and so his judgments are completely unfounded. Fable 2 was amazing, and it's one of my couple favorite single-player games for 360. If Demon's Souls anything like that, then I'd say it's a must-own title. And from all the positive reviews I've heard for it, I'd say it's definitely worth a try. Steve is right that there's likely much-better games for 360 out there. But if we're talking about folks who only have a PS3 to begin with, I don't see any reason they shouldn't at least rent or try out the game sometime.

I liked Sid Meyer's Raildroads! and Freight Tycoon Inc.. SimTower is also riveting good time and if you can understand the runes, a Japanese remake was made for the DS. I also like SimGolf, but once you finish one course, you can't return to that locale or earn anymore money from it :\

Additional benefit: the 4:3 TV I have hooked my PS2 to can actually be put on its side!
Late reply, but which didn't you have? They only published 4 for PS2 as I remember (Dai-ou-jou, Mushihimesama, ibara, and Espgaluda) Mushi and Ibara are the only ones I have, since I have DOJ on 360 and Esp is crap, though the 2nd one is much better, and coming to 360 in Spring. The tatsujin DVD from Shooting Love 20XX showed when TS held their official tournaments for the game, they hung up wall-mounted LCD widescreens running the 360 version and the wall mounts they had allowed the TV to be rotated so the game was displayed correctly. That's an awesome idea except that even if I had like a 35" LCD turned sideways, it would basically be the same size as playing on my regular TV and also not all of the shmups let you rotate the screen in-game like that.

Very happy with PS3 purchase so far. Setup was easy and as expected, LBP is incredible. I'm kicking myself for asking for the regular edition instead of the updated GOTY version though. I thought pre-owned would mean cheaper, but after paying, I saw it was exactly the same. The additions aren't essential, so I'll live. I've ordered the cheapest HDMI cable I could find, but I'm now too broke to get anything else for it, like a second controller. Still worth it.

I was missing ESP (which was indeed a disappointment, despite looking pretty) and more importantly, Mushihimesama! For some reason I never got around to buying Mushihimesama, so I got it right before Futari came out, and have been practicing ever since.

At least the PS2 games let you rotate in any direction, and for the 360 it won't matter since it's hooked to a big LCD that I can't rotate anyway.

I was over at a friends house yesterday to play some poker.

He bought a PS3 two days ago with GT5 Prologue (or some other beta/demo version lol) and MW2.

He plays it on a 720p 40" LCD and has it connected via HDMI, running in 1080i (I checked it in the settings).

There are two things I noticed:

- It has a weird "fluid" touch to it, but I can't really explain it. It seems to run somewhat smoother than on my PC, despite me running it at 60fps, 1680x1050 and everything maxed out.

- It seemed to have absolutely no anti-aliasing and it was quite pixelated, especially when the player got flashed and the "bloom" faded away. Trees, especially in the distance, were eyecancer-inducing stuff.

Is this how everything in 720p/1080i looks !?

I honestly have no idea, this is the first time I see one of the new consoles running on such a big TV, the demo stations here are only connected to ~25" max. screens, where they looked nice.

I'm really confused now, because I was planning on buying the Yakuza 3 PS3 bundle with the awesome design (click), but if the games really look like this, I won't buy one.

A lot of the things youre noticing come from a number of factors. LCD screens have those kinds of symptoms often, where plasma and DLP usually do not. Also, because it's so awkward to develop games for PS3, According to many developers, they have to alter or downgrade certain graphical elements to get it to run right, and sometimes still fail, according to a lot of reviews.

Maybe they have some shitting settings, I'm not exactly sure about their TV, I've never seen anything in HD before on their TV.

However, I have some HD movies on my PC and got my HDTV (37" LCD, same brand as theirs, just the smaller model) hooked up to it. When I play them it looks absolutely beautiful and crystal clear.

After searching some MW2 + resolution in google I found out that it runs at only 1024 x 600 on BOTH console, which is a fucking joke. I thought they're all at least in 720p !? So much for "HD gaming".

It often may have a lot to do with the actual settings or size of the TV as well, cause I use my mother's LCD 32" when I'm home on vacation and it looks fantastic, but then I've played the same game with the same settings on slightly larger LCDs and gotten a much worse picture.

And it's common now for developers to actively upscale Console games while displaying in something around 500-600 resolution instead of having it natively run in the higher resolution so the framerate stays high, but obviously that only matters for games trying to be showy with framerate like *cough*CALLOFDUTY*cough*.

Graphics are the least important part of games, so I don't give much of a shit, but the topic comes up often so I know enough about it, but really the only people who dwell on it are people who are trying to argue that one thing is better than another. As long as it looks good to the human eye, it's fine, I'd rather not sit around all day bitching about technical specs that ultimately don't make a difference to the gameplay.

I still play with my PS2 and love Civ 4 and just started playing some shmups, so graphics aren't the most important thing to me.

However, flickering and pixelated stuff is something completely different.

I do think they haven't set up their TV very well for games too though.

What you described sounds like crappy AA routines which is a per-game thing. The only way a TV could help with that is if it actually blurred the image, which of course is even worse... I have noticed that some games just don't bother with any kind of AA, which can be weird when you come off PC gaming. Like Augen says, games like CoD are so busy keeping their framerate solid that it's possible they'll sacrifice things like that for it (although I've only played the PC version, so I wouldn't know).

The fluidness I'm not 100% sure what that is, it could be inter-frame blurring or something. There's something to be said for and against interframe blurring, like you say it looks smooth but not having it will give a crisper look and better response times generally.
