I actually saw a comment along these lines, though from a foreign fan. The person was saying that people shouldn't participate because if S/mileage goes major their music will start to suck. I get where they're coming from, but if you make a big deal about debuting a group and then they don't debut (though I doubt that would happen), the group is likely to fade into obscurity anyway and stop releasing.



I've also read some comments on Kanon's blog from Japanese fans saying that they wanted to ask their friends to participate, but have been too embarassed and/or shy. Grow some balls fanboys! I managed to get three people to do it so far, and may have actually turned one of them into a S/mileage fan <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol:' />



The lack of TV promotion probably doesn't help them either. =/

I'm kinda disappointed by the lack of promo effort for the group. How about doing a street live or an event at a mall? I remember AKB48 visiting middle/high schools to do promotions.



UFA is hardly making an effort to reach out to new audiences.

How about Morning Musume going out and selling 50,000 copies of their indy single, Ai no Tane, by hand to earn their major debut? With a five day time limit, no less. Hell, Sayumi, recently number 10 on a "most hated female celebrities in Japan" list, can start a blog and in a month get over 13 million hits and 60,000 friends/subscribers.



So I'm just thinking either no one really gives a shit about them, or they're getting swept up in the whole anti-moe/loli backlash that's sweeping Japan at large. I mean seriously, the second I heard about the promotion, I figured one of the #-chans could have rallied and gotten them all the pictures they needed in an hour, but if those wretched hives of scum and otakury aren't even on board, then those girls are screwed. Guess you have to put on a thong and get your pre-pubescent tits out to appeal to the modern wota...



edit: Sayumi has posted about the promotion on her blog and how the girls are struggling, putting her adorably evil powers to good use. So now if they make it they will forever be in Sayu's debt for saving their cute, but bland, little selves.

But like album or movie ticket sales, something like this would be heavily front loaded, and all the people that really wanted to do it would have done so in the first few days. And I doubt they're holding onto pics to build suspense since "OMG we got 20,000 pics in two days!" sounds far more awesome than barely making it on the last day.



MM managed their debut challenge in just 3 days, which involved actually selling something (five times the amount worth, I might add) to people that had no idea who they were. That's the equivalent of walking 20 miles to school without shoes in the snow uphill BOTH WAYS! These lazy little tykes can't even convince less than 1% of Japan's hikkikomori to send in pictures at no cost to them? Shame!!!

Wasn't MM's done in 4 days? I'm pretty sure it was. Plus, they were still selling a product, a good one at that. S/mileage is trying to get people to go out of their way and participate with the ideal outcome being that they could possibly maybe buy their products eventually maybe. Plus, with dwindling CD sales, I wonder if MM could repeat their trial by fire (original or current).

And, again, if they just let the girls take to the streets with cameras and ask people if they could smile for them, it would probably be a done deal. Turn a bunch of cute girls loose in Akihabara or Denden Town and they'd have it done in a matter of hours.

MM was also heavily promoted by Asayan at the time of their debut. I can't remember if the actual "We must sell 50,000 copies" thing got air time before they actually went out and accomplished it, but MM themselves had the fact that their formation had been on a fairly popular TV program going for them - S/mileage has pretty much zero TV exposure.



It's also a very different kind of campaign - you can sell a single to someone right then and there, but to participate in this people have to send in a photo either via cell phone or computer, which takes more time. I imagine even old school MM would have had more trouble if they had to try and stop people on the street, get them to take photos, and upload them to a site. Then you have to factor in embarassment and weariness - lots of people, not just the Japanese, are ridiculously camera shy. If you tell them the photo is going to be on a board, it doesn't matter how tiny you say it's going to be, people get all worried about how they look. Then there's the people who are worried about how the photo is going to be used, i.e. what's in the fine print.



It probably would have been smarter of Tsunku to ask them to sell tons of copies of a single, but I guess that doesn't mesh well with the fact that they already have a few singles out and then there'd be complaints about wota buying 50 copies a piece.



Edit: Also what Al just said. So far it seems like they've been sent out with fliers rather than being allowed to just take pictures of (willling) people on the streets themselves.

This is a lie!!! All you need to do is go somewhere where Japanese schoolgirls or 20-something women gather and pull out a camera and they will dive in front of it flashing a peace sign like a secret service agent taking a bullet for a president



And I'd argue that these girls have had far more of a media presence than MM did. MM was only on Asayan, while these girls are on kids shows, the radio and have been in numerous magazines already, not to mention the net.

You're outright lying if you think that Japanese people aren't on the more introverted side when it comes to having their face shown to the public. That's why you see people running from TV show cameras whenever there's an "ask normal people!" segment of a show. Or people wearing flu masks in videos on Youtube/Nico Nico Douga. Japanese people may not be terrified of cameras as a whole, but they fucking love anonymity.



Also there are lots and lots of closet wotas or people who don't want to be attached to idols, no matter how much they like them.

This is basically what I was getting at. Also I said "not JUST the Japanese" because I was talking about....fans outside of Japan as well. I.e. people at this BBS, H!O, etc. could help contribute maybe a few hundred or so, if everyone really promoted it, but I've seen lots of concerns about looking bad and/or privacy issues.

I've tried asking my friends to just take their pictures that I would send them myself but everyone got pretty hysterical about that. So, I can see people having the same problem asking others to help. I don't understand why people won't simply help, they expose their faces everywhere without even reading the privacy thing. And I'm talking about my friends... So I know they do that. I'm so frustrated.



Anyway, I'm sure everything will work out in the end if that is what they want! 4,000 is already a lot in my opinion if you consider to how many people the indies singles usually sell. People, not copies.
