Mano in America in July?

Post by EmEl »

So I went to S/mileage and Mano's Joint Live convert where they announced S/mileage's picture results. In an attempt to not leave Mano out, Matsuura and her new hair had a special message for Mano on the screen. She's going to Los Angeles. I thought I was hearing things since my Japanese sucks, but: sanspo agrees.

I hope the July doesn't mean Anime Expo again. That would be terrible.

(special thanks to kitaoji and alita87 for helping me figure out how to get tickets to a show, and Trike for helping me look for Mano events)

----

I'll just put the concert report here, since there's no real news about the America date yet.

Mano jumped out after the intro music and led the crowd and S/mileage in an exciting rendition of "Guru Guru Jump". They really love this song at recent H!P concerts, don't they? I suppose it fires up the crowd. The two acts then went back and forth doing their songs. "Haru no Arashi" was really great live, as Mano really put some great energy into it. Even the goofy vogue dance looked pretty amazing with the lighting effects. S/mileage rocked the heck out of "Suki-chan". Mano had her new Egg dancers since S/mileage is too good for that kind of stuff now. Eventually they ended with a joint performance (including the Eggs) of C-ute's "JUMP" and Matsuura's "I know". They ended with a mass "SANKYUU!"

Mano was looking amazing, and S/mileage had some pretty fancy, cute hair. Saki was looking the best I've ever seen her. There was no encore because of the presentation at the end. (Why am I always at the non-encore H!P shows?!)

First Matsuura came on the screen to give senpai advice for Mano who is turning 19 soon, and is going into her second year since her major debut. Then she read a letter from some company president or something and told that she was going to America. Mano later said that she was excited because she has received things in Japanese from America (like my fan letter, Mano?).

Then the main event. They rolled out a large board covered with a curtain. But I guess you've all seen the video by now. I was sitting like right across the aisle from Tsunku's row. Mano also adorably kept giving hugs to the sobbing Ogawa.

Then we all filed out row by row to shake hands. It was far too quick of course. As a perk of being a white foreigner, Mano visibly perked up when she saw me, saying, "お!" in a happy surprise. Probably because she had just gotten through talking about America. As I was being pushed away, I said "ichiban sukina!" and she responded with a definitive "はい!" (I also made Wada squirm because she had to touch the hands of a dirty gaijin. Well, my hands were clean of course).

Anyway, it was a short concert, but I don't care: I heard "Lucky Aura" live and then an hour later shook Mano's hand. Mano is really an idol now. She really shines on stage, and (compared to the fresh S/mileage) she had such presence during the handshaking event. I guess it's been a long time since June 2008.

I suppose we'll hear more information about the event soon.

Wow, sounds great! Thanks for that report. Did you go to Japan just for that concert?

Coincidentally, just last night I watched her concert DVD, "First Concert Tour 'Introduction ~Hajimete no Kandou~'" which was taped last September. She's quite good in it. She keeps getting better. As I was watching her I was thinking of who to compare her to and Matsuura and Maki Goto came to mind. The big difference between Mano and Matsuura, though, is that Mano's had to really work at it. Matsuura appeared practically full-blown as a consummate professional and seeming show biz veteran at the age of 14, absolutely born to it. Mano's more sensitive and is not nearly the confident singer and stage performer Matsuura is (Dammit, why am I using their last names--I feel much more comfortable with their first names), but she's got this sincere quality, this innocent eagerness to please that can be quite endearing when those efforts pay off. And Mano breaks into tears from time to time, something Aya never does. In last night's concert, she covers her face with her hands after performing "Jasmine Tea" at the piano and is still crying when she gets up to introduce the next number. Was the song emotional or did she just flub a note?

Did she cry at your concert, Em-El?

I will actually be in Japan for a year and arrived two weeks ago, so I'll most likely unfortunately miss whatever event they have planned for America. I went to Tokyo, bought a ticket at a ticket reseller in Harajuku, walked to Shibuya, and watched the concert. It was pretty easy (even if expensive).

She did cry a bit. At first she seemed very surprised at the announcement of her overseas promotion, but got kinda choked up at Matsuura's nice video message and because of the announcement. Then she seemed to get teary for S/mileage when they were showing the picture board and announcing the success of the 10,000 smiles. I'm sure it was somewhat real since she's been working with them for quite a while now since they're always put together. But she was there to be the big sister for Ogawa who was crying the most.

Edit: Guess I'll add in some pictures of the outside of the venue with the flowers that corporations sent to the girls.

Great report !

Interesting to read, even if I'm not interested in these two groups.

You know what, you should have done something special with ayaka, not giving her your hand or something. haha

You ended up getting to go! Awesome! :B

I actually saw a Twitter of apparently someone who works at UFA and it said that Mano was going to be going to Hollywood, but I didn't want to post about it because I didn't know if it was real. I guess it was. :X

I wish they said why she's going to America, though. Isn't Anime Expo in July? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I hope it's not an actual event, though. MM in America hurt enough.

Another thing that California gets. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' /> Why don't people come to like, New York? >:[

Also please do not diss Haru no Arashi's voguing. It's the best dance H!P has ever done.

Forget New York, no one EVER comes to Atlanta <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> though honestly even if Mano did come I wouldn't go.

Either way, interesting news... UFA seems to be trying to spread H!P acts to the US quite a bit recently.

After how Anime Expo treated H!P last year I doubt they'd be going in for a second round, especially with Mano who hasn't done anything Anime related. Now if it were Buono or S/mileage I'd reconsider the Expo deal.

Now if you were sending Mano to Hollywood to take a break and get some vocal training I might buy that. ;D

They're allowed to have two or more major music acts at Anime Expo. Last year, they had Moi dix Moi playing there... the band led by Mana from Malice Mizer. Even though MM was promoted as the main musical act, Moi dix Moi are arguably much more popular with the American anime fanbase. One which has a huge percentage of women and gay men, for one thing. Unlike Japan's wotas, which we know all too well would have preferred MM by a landslide. But anyhow, if the same thing happened this year (having both a pop and a rock musical guest), it wouldn't be surprising to me. Obviously the roles would be reversed, as Sophia is legendary. But that would be fine, as it would give us more time to actually see Mano (and not have nearly as many annoying bastards to push through). Anyone who'd be there to see her would hafta be far more into Hellopro, as she doesn't have the general name recognition.

Morning Musume hasn't done any anime theme songs either, have they? Unless it was in the past couple years, as I have no idea of how their more recent singles have been promoted. Mano has that whole Hello Kitty tie-in, which is enough to get her into an anime convention. Major guests can be from the video games industry, sentai, tokusatsu, and other such things that don't relate to anime at all. As long as it's Japanese entertainment. The only stipulation that AX tends to have, for the past many years, is that 99% of their announced "guests of honor" are from Japan. They see this, in part, as something that puts them above the other cons. Ones where, for example, a "guest of honor" could be a webcomic artist or some guy who played a guest role on American Power Rangers. Anime Expo tends to lump any American guests into their "industry guest" section, or something similar.

I hope ManoEri comes, but.. people should start coming to the Midwest. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':popper:' /> There are rumors that H&A could come to the East Coast (someone met h.Naoto who said something to that effect, that it's a possibility) but.

I thought the MM trip was a problem as UFA had real difficulties with the guy who runs the event and the feeling was that UFA wouldn't be dealing with him again....or is the attraction of the dollar outweighing other considerations <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /frown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':whistling:' />.

I'm worried about the fan turnout. She's not exactly Morning Musume in name recognition, and plenty of H!P fans splurged to get to Los Angeles last year. At least if I could be there, I'd make sure to be the obnoxios fan for her, and I feel I could a pretty damn good seat.

Somebody who goes, please tell her that I couldn't make it. I'm sure she'll understand and even be upset! Make sure to get my Lucky Aura poster magically signed for me as well. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':whistling:' />

Oh well, there's a part of me that's happy I don't have to deal with Anime Expo's trash again just for a musical guest. Although it would be nice to see the random anime idols that scatter the convention floor.

Aaaargh I would love to go but I'm 98% sure it's just not going to be possible. I'm worried about turnout too. With MM, it seemed like a lot of people who don't even follow them super closely or aren't big fans of their current lineup/songs went anyway - probably because of nostalgia or just to have the chance to see the group at least once in their lifetime. Mano is so new, she's really only going to draw new, hardcore fans and then the casual fans who happen to live close to L.A. :/

When did I become such a ManoEri fan. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... prised.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':whistling:' /> I blame EmEl.

Does anyone know if the guys from last year's AX who pissed off the UFA guys still in charge this year, or have they been replaced? If they haven't I'd have to guess that, given what we've heard about what happened and the subsequent fallout, that there was indeed major ass-kissing happening from the AX side.

I could see myself heading out west if MM were to come back, but even as adorable as she is, Mano doesn't rate a $1000+ trip. My main hope is for Hangry&Angry to come anywhere near the east coast on their eventual US tour.
