I like Buono a lot, they are my number 2 after MM in the group stakes, I didn't mention them as the three girls were already relatively old when they started and had the Berryz/C-ute experience behind them.
Referring to the whole age thing, yes I know there have always been young and old in the group but what gets me is the polarisation of the ages, four aged 12-14 and four in their 20s, before there was always a good spread of ages. Taking an average of their age means nothing when there is such a gap.
I have a problem picturing the newcomers doing a lot of songs from the back catalogue and not sounding slightly ridiculous.
Like I said, I'm keeping an open mind and nothing would make me happier than in a year's time you all all refer back to my original post and point out what an idiot I was ever to doubt the genius of Tsunku following the success of the newly rejuvenated and very successful MM <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/rofl.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' />.

I agree with this. Then again, talent and personality are more important to me than recapturing some past ideal chemistry that was probably due as much to sheer luck as it was anything Tsunku had in mind at the time. A different kind of Morning Musume is just fine with me so long as "different" includes great songs and interesting personalities, but mostly great songs. I don't have much confidence that Tsunku is capable of churning out great material anymore -- the dude has written hundreds of songs by now, and there is inevitable burnout after such a prolific output -- but Sayashi Riho is exactly the kind of girl that would have been passed over in previous auditions, so maybe he really is serious about MM again. I don't know. I hope so.

Having 12 year olds in makes me feel old....they need someone who is 15-16!! I wish Mizuki was older by a year.

As much as I wish the same, I think unfortunately we wouldn't have been as pleased with the audition results if those three had still been around. It seems that it took a drastic reduction in the group size and a cut of three valuable members (each in their own way) to get Tsunku/UFA to choose a few girls with actual talent, and to actually add several members instead of yet another "only one!!" type audition.

I think the old verses young lineup just means we will have 4 chorus girls who won't get a solo line for at least 2 years. Hopefully, they can make it on the c/w. Also, to address your previous comment about 22 year olds doing sexy songs, Aika debuted with Egao YES Nude, they don't care that much about ages for the type of song. Plus, ZYX covered a sexy T&C Bomber song as what, 11-13 year olds. 5 tweens vs 1 adult Yaguchi. Young ages won't stop UFA, if they want to make MM sexy, it'll still happen.

Not old like old lady, more like 'older'. Because I still see 12 year olds as little kids, so when I think about their age, and the fact that they're elementary schoolers it's like, woah. They're so young.

MY GLASS IS HALF FULL. And I'm enjoying every single little sip of it. I'm savouring the flavour of the best Morning Musume generation added in nearly a decade. I feel thrilled about the opportunities.
Whatever you say, I for one declare this the beginning of Morning Musume's new Golden Era and welcome the arrival of its harbingers. The MM fan inside me is dancing like crazy and I will indeed dance and sing like crazy when it explodes into boundless awesomeness and brings MM back to its rightful spot in the charts.

This just occured to me; Tsunku said he was going for "little sisters" characters, maybe this means he will pair them up with the older ones and have them, to some degree, appear as pairs. (except for Aika, since she's the youngest she'll get left out)

I really hope MM gets promoted more this year and has a lot of TV appearances other than just Sayu and sometimes Ai.
I hope they get another TV show! AKB has like 3+ weekly shows! Why can't MM have 2?

Because they don't have the viewers to justify giving them the airtime? Amen to all three points! Even moreso to the news about Okai, as she is my favorite C-ute member (likely my overall favorite person in current Hellopro, but it's hard to say nowadays.) It seems I came back from my hiatus just before a slew of great news in the H!P world. I was a bit devastated at the MM losses, seeing as I adore all three gals. But these positives outweigh the negative, easily. We have a true invigoration within MM, along with multiple soloists again - two things we've desperately needed. It harks back to what many of us see as the glory days.

God DAMN that was well-said! I've still loved the MM of the past many years, along with the more-sensible group size. But as you said, things needed to be shaken up. And while doing Avex style songs should have helped with MM's mainstream sales in theory, it hasn't been working out that way. Avex tends to employ obscenely well-trained people who specialize in R&B. Their artists are more about the musical quality, less about the image promotion. They are a completely different thing than idol pop, and trying to mix them up too much doesn't work. The same thing happened (in reverse) when Avex tried to form their own idol pop collective between 2003-2006. They bombed, hard. Each company does their own thing well, and they should stick to it. As the wotas are the only ones who seem prepared to buy H!P releases in volume, stick to the idol pop they love.

Definitely agree with this, too. While I technically started into Hellopro when I bought Morning Coffee in 1998, I didn't become really hardcore into it until sometime in 1999. When Goto Maki debuted, even despite it happening so early in my own diehard fandom, I thought it was insane. "The group is already great, why are they adding some goddamn kid all of a sudden?" And while I've always had faith in the group, like you said, I've never been truly pleased at the addition of a given generation. The same idea of, "It ain't broke, don't fix it," kept cropping up. Thankfully a lot of the girls from previously-added generations really grew into the role, and we totally fell for a few of them. I'm hoping someone like Riho can have anywhere near the same turnaround effect that Goto Maki did. So many things about her, even with what little I've seen, have a very similar vibe.

Just hearing right away that there were 4 and not 1 made me super excited. And all four are good choices. I would have been fine with Mogi as she clearly has the ability to improve if forced to practice but just her would have been like just Koharu. I am hoping that seeing them on stage on Sunday will help me to pick a favorite as you can't be a fan here and not have a favorite or you would go broke goods wise.
I don't see the big deal about their ages, even being 23 myself because everyone who has gotten in has been 12-14, I was just afraid Tsunku was going to pick all 10 year olds which would have been slightly awkward. It's how idols work, age doesn't matter for choosing songs etc. I mean look at Jurina in SKE. She has been foxy since she was selected as an 11 year old. She never looked her age and has always been one of the most mature. And here in Japan showing a 12 year old as sexy is not seen as a taboo, but nor does it mean that everyone who sees a 12 year old musician and thinks "Damn she's hot" is a pedophile. Because these are performers not just your average 6th grader with her large backpack and pervert alarm.
I am happy to see a mostly positive response to the new gen and that seems to be the same as within wota communities here. I don't want them to be on TV all the time like AKB, you don't need to be mainstream to be an idol, I just want people to not say "You like Musume, they are so behind the times" when I say who I like musically. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nceman.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol:' />

I love Riho, like Kanon and Mizuki and am indifferent to Erina at the moment. I'm looking forward to seeing them improve over time. I think they all have good potential.

The actual announcement isn't there anymore. S/mileage promoted themselves SO much that it's all like YAY S/mileage oh BTW Morning Musume has new members, YAY S/mileage!

Having listened to the graduation announcement again I feel like Sayumi and the girls are SO a tuned to hearing bad news from Tsunku when he yells Surprise that I wasn't shocked when Sayumi started freaking out before Mizuki was called forward as another new member.

Sayu has apparently already named them as well: Fuku-chan, Zukki-chan (although I thought this was one of Airi's names too), Eripon, and Yasshi.

Watching the announcement, I'm a bit surprised that Mizuki didn't find out until everyone else did that she was joining Morning Musume. Kind of awesome to have them, but I'm sure it was surreal to her. The girls around her looked really excited for her too!
