Variety shows are also somewhat scripted, so it would really help out the girls that are more shy/less comedic. They don't have to rely so much on themselves.

Yeh true, but even when it was scripted some members COUGHAIKACOUGH just could never seem to be funny or interesting no matter what they did.

Girls like Sayumi or Eri for example were great on camera, whereas Risa, Ai or Reina were great singers but a little too straight when it came down to talking.

I believe 9th and 10th gen have a really good balance, Riho, Mizupon, Ayumin, Kuduu are all great performers, they are already great and getting better all the time.

Zukki, Eripon, Haruna and Masaki are in the group to be funny, cute and interesting and I believe they are doing just that.

I agree with you. I don't think 9th/10th will ever equal the platinum era vocal-wise, but they bring a LOT more personality and charm to the table. They're a well-balanced group and there's no dead weight at the moment.

I just hope Tsunku doesn't ruin it by adding a ton of new girls, a la S/Mileage. One or two at the most please!

The new S/mileage girls are probably the most balanced of all the gens really.

Even though I wasn't a fan until mid-2009 I still love watching any Hello!Morning treasures I can find on YouTube and Until The Bus Comes.

If they do bring back sketch-comedy and game shows I hope they include S/mileage as regular guest as well as eggs. I am somewhat looking forward to the 11th

Gen. I have to be whole-heartily honest, I don't really want this. I know I can't get my way but, I wish they waited until the fall to announce auditions

and added the new members in December or January. I want to hear more of the 10th Gen. *Raises Glass*: What ever happens this is to Sayu's Army! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /weeeh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':weeeh:' />

well, remember the first generation members auditioned on their vocal talent ONLY, after that it became more about being an idol rather than vocally skillful

1st and 2nd gen were about the vocals. 3rd was also, but I think they were also a bit more interested in looks, then 4th gen is where the whole being an idol became more important. Imo.

And honestly, people may gate me for saying this, but I hope Karin doesn't get added, or any eggs at that. MM already has 2 former eggs, I'd rather see them get some real girls that had no prior experience that can be molded. Because I kinda thought that was the whole point. The eggs are in no way inexperienced, they go through training, hold their own concerts, and dance back up at H!P concerts.

I kind of disagree about eggs - yeah, they have some experience, but it in no way compares to what a real active group goes through and Mizuki is the perfect example of that. In theory, she should have been an instant star but instead she's taken a while to get into her groove just like any other girl.

But overall I think "the whole point" has changed. Back in the day, from roughly Love Machine to Namida ga Tomaranai Houkago, the majority of MM's songs weren't all that challenging vocally. There wasn't all of the belting and diva notes and whatnot. It was okay to take on a few girl-next-door's who weren't polished singers yet (or never would be), because there were still lines around that they could handle without giving us all headaches. MM (and some other groups too) is more focused on sounding cool than cute. Part of the reason Ai, Miki, and Reina sang nearly everything with the occasional help of Risa and Eri has been because most of the songs are written at their skill level. No one wants to hear Eripon trying to belt out one of Takahashi's epic "deeeeemo ne" lines in Onna to Otoko, but I wouldn't have wanted to hear Rika or Tsuji or Konno do it back in the day either. If they shift to doing more songs like Maji desu ka Ska or Pyoco (minus the awful theme) they can go with more inexperienced girls, but if we keep getting Renai Hunter type songs, we need some girls like Karin who can already sing well. Otherwise we're just going to have a new herd of background dancers and this might as well be Exile.

^ This post summed up everything that needed to be said on the matter. I was getting ready to type a response, but TnB just made poetry of the whole thing so that I couldn't say it better.

I'd be surprised if we ever get to see the more vocally challenging songs of the platinum era ever again (and rob, I saw what you did there), mostly because we are starting to see more girls who are inexperienced and poor singers again. They're cute, they've got great personality, and they're good in all other avenues, but they aren't singers other than holding the occasional idol note (which isn't saying much of anything).

To be frank, Tsunku's gonna need to keep making more Pyocos to cater to a whole group that can't sing again, unless he's willing to give some of the stronger (but nowhere near Takahashi-strong) singers some leads. As it is, he seems a bit reluctant to dethrone Reina, so we're now stuck with Reina+Riho leads until further notice, and I sure know I don't want the Reina/Riho show plus eight backup dancers. I hardly stood it when I first became a fan with Resonant Blue, so I doubt I'd like to see it again with new girls I'm actually invested in.

Where the hell is the "new members can't sing" attitude coming from? Five out of the eight can sing pretty well, and two can be salvaged. Haruna's pretty much the only lost cause vocally.

I think we've been spoiled on Takahashi/Risa/LinLin/JunJun/Eri/Reina era we had going for several years. Takahashi especially has defined what is considered "good singers" within the group. A Maki or Aya at their debuts would be a wonderful welcome, but I don't know if we'll ever get girls like that auditioning again, especially with so many rival idol groups out there now.

I know the current girls will be awesome once they age. That's the downfall of picking younger girls instead of mature ones. On the other hand, the younger girls also have the chance to develop well. We just have to wait a couple of years to see how things will turn out.

It's not that the new members can't sing at all, it's more... a combination of what Petit Melon said about us being spoiled by the previous era and what I was saying about the type of songs the group gets now. None of the new girls are as good as Takahashi/Gaki/Eri/Reina-minus-her-squeek just yet, but some of them are definitely on their way to at least being as good as Gaki/Eri/some of the girls from the early days. The problem is more the type of songs - Riho sounds much better when she's not trying to belt and diva wail. She may be able to do those things in a few years, but not right now. 9th and 10th gen sounded pretty good overall when they got to sing cuter, easier songs in concerts recently.

And in conclusion we all support Karin joining to make the group balanced vocal talent wise.

The more I hear about Karin, the more I don't want her in the group. I'm sick of her fanbase already.

Then again, I don't have a member to hate on right now, and that's part of the fun of MM.

.....

No, I still don't want Karin in the group.

Ah! I don't have a member either! Image I like them all now that Risa is gone. This wont do!

I guess I'll just have to shift too S/mileage and focus all my wrath onto Rina and hope that turns her into a better person because of my awesome mental powers.

I've always found that it makes total sense to dislike a person because of their fans rather than something they actually did! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... lleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I don't think the Karin haters have anything to worry about though. As one of the members of her oh-so-annoying fanbase, I can still be realistic and see that the moment for her has probably passed.

Rob constantly fangirls over everyone he likes - it's what balances out his constant hating on Koharu, Aika, and AKB. He's just a very expressive and excitable kind of guy. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/fags.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':fags:' />

I guess I do hate Karin fans. They are an obnoxious lot. Yeah she's good, but she's not the greatest idol ever. There can only be one Momoe Yamaguchi and she's still alive. Image Second place goes to Seiko Matsuda, who unfortunately is still also alive, third place to Aya Matsuura, again still alive.

It's her being constantly mentioned that annoys me.

That's the only reason I ever hate anybody! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... lesson.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lesson:' />

On the serious though, idols don't ever do anything deserving hate, so there's really no other reason to hate them. Hell, Kpop as a whole is lucky I ignore fans or it wouldn't have a chance.

Still indifferent to Karin, but also find it unlikely she'd be added. @Al: Holding a note for .5 seconds ≠ singing ability. Just because idols have much lower standards than singers or other artists does not mean they can sing. Compared to other idol groups and even agencies, H!P definitely is full of much stronger singers, but the current MM Kids aren't really all that great vocally.

I think Riho, Mizuki, Zukki, and Haruka can probably carry the weight of MM's vocals, but they all need a few years on them before they'll really be great. But I can see Riho straining her voice if she doesn't learn to belt or... get more training or something. Part of feeling this way is definitely being spoiled by the Ai/Eri/JunLin era; the other part is just that they aren't all that great yet. Tsunku writes songs that fit their overall ability though, but even just looking at Pyoco and Renai Hunter should let you see those songs are written for a much lower vocal ability (sans maybe Reina's lines) than anything pre-Onna to Otoko no Lullaby Game. Even the girls who weren't leads in Onna to Otoko had harder lines to sing than the non-leads nowadays.

So, um, yeah. I covered a lot of ground here, but hopefully that all made sense. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nfused.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Zukki is probably their best bet if they absolutely HAVE to have another belter. I don't think you can train just anyone to do it, otherwise everyone would do it. And they could try to teach someone else to do high notes, instead of her.

Interesting possibility:

They add four new girls and divide Momusu into two teams, a Sayu and Reina team. They will promote the new singles separately and compete with one another to see who can attract the most fans. Might be a clever way to expand Momusu's fan base.

On Reina's team: definitely Haruka, a big Reina fan. Also Riho (another big Reina fan), Zukki and Masaki and two 11 gen'ers.

On Sayu's team: Haruna, Mizuki, Ayumi (all big Sayu fans), Eripon (there to keep Mizuki company), and two 11 gen'ers.

Agreed. Zukki has really grown this year in terms of her vocals and I think she needs to finally be given a shot.

But let's all face reality. It's gonna be the Riho/Reina/Robosayu show.
