...I was about to say, "But I'm Tom Cruise," but decided not to bust the chops of a building worker merely doing his job. So I had to go out and walk up 33rd Street and cross the street to the other side of Fifth. A co-worker was standing there watching the filming and said "Did you see Tom Cruise?" No I hadn't, but he was there filming a scene for this movie. I didn't have my glasses on, so I couldn't tell which one he was from across the street.

Finally, it's definitely worth watching in a good theatre.

I personally would never pay for a Tom Cruise movie anymore just because he's in Scientology.

And giving him (and thus also Scientology) even more exposure and support by seeing his movies, I consider morally wrong.

Scientology is a Hollywood tax shelter. None of them believe any of that shit.

But with that attitude, you might as well never watch another Hollywood movie again, because half the industry is involved in Scientology for them sweet, sweet tax exemption purposes.

This bothers me a lot also, in fact I spent a good time reading about CoS after of looking up some facts my review. But really, so many actors and other people in the industry admit to being involved in CoS that it would be impossible to completely avoid financing them. And I'm sure there's even more people who we don't know about. Tom Cruise is just prominent because he's so outspoken about it and has made an ass of himself on a few occasions.

A lot people have views or agendas or episodes in their pasts that you may disagree with, but that's not gonna stop me from enjoying another Polanski or even Schwarzenegger movie like it should be enjoyed, on a big screen in a theatre. I used to be much more radical about it, but you can't deny that Cruise is a very competent actor and I'm glad I can now separate one from the other. Speaking of which I finally gotta get around to watching Leni Riefenstahl's documentaries.

[quote name='Madara' timestamp='1366642068' post='149956']

Last year, on my way to work using a shortcut through the Empire State Building lobby I was stopped at the Fifth Avenue side and told to turn back because they were filming a movie outside. I was about to say, "But I'm Tom Cruise," but decided not to bust the chops of a building worker merely doing his job. So I had to go out and walk up 33rd Street and cross the street to the other side of Fifth. A co-worker was standing there watching the filming and said "Did you see Tom Cruise?" He was the shorty. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Nice story, and you'll definitely recognize which scenes were shot there. I could have went to meet him during the movie's world premiere in Dublin a couple weeks ago, but I'm always uninformed about this kind of events. But my workmates said he had a long spontaneous signing and handshake session there. Ironically, the local CoS branch is just 3 minutes walk from the Savoy theatre.

We had a similar run-in with some movie crew at the entrance to the Paris' Gare du Nord on the day of the Morning Musume handshake last year, but I never got to find out what were they filming there or who did we almost meet.

That's like saying fascism (or the people supporting it) is ok, because you can have a profit if you're a part of it.

Scientology is most certainly not ok:

And yes, Scientology is basically fascism and just as bad.

@aine; you can watch movies without giving them money. Just sayin'.

Not sure how this is handled in other countries, but it's quite easy to get into a cinema auditorium a few minutes after the screening has already started. People that check your tickets usually leave some 5 minutes after everybody went in. They also don't close the doors, in case somebody needs to go to the toilet.

Especially when the movie already ran for a few weeks and the cinema is pretty empty anyway.

Doesn't make scientology less of a shithole.

Everybody here knows I despise religion in general, so you're not convincing me with saying "but others do bad things too". I'm not watching some christian fundamentalist shit either. Or muslim, or jewish or whatever.

I've never voted for a christian conservative politician.

Not in any place where I ever went to see a movie. The doors to each screen room are in an area behind a ticket desk and there's always an usher posted there since they have movies start every 30 minutes or so.

Awesome that they used so much from the comics, but I was a little bummed that it wasn't a complete retelling of the Extremis storyline.

Star Trek: Into Darkness - I had fun, lots of it. It was like Star Wars, but without all the bullshit (did I just commit some cosmic blasphemy?). Not very original and somewhat predictable in a few places but that shouldn't deter you from enjoying it. I don't know how trekkies feel about the new movies, I'm a total Trek ignorant but re-watching the 2009 movie on the weekend and Into Darkness now made me want to watch all Star Trek series starting with the original one. I watched a good handful of episodes before (of the Pickard series) but that was like 20 years ago and before I could give a damn, so I'm sure I missed out on a ton of lore. For the record, it was much less camera shake-y and lens flare-y than the previous one, even though it was also much more action packed.

We watched it in 2D and it looked sexy. It was shot on film in 2D and only converted to 3D in post, so you should save a few bucks and a headache and skip 3D. Say what you want about Abrams but man's got my respect for sticking to the right way.

PS. The next movie needs more catgirls.

I hate Star Trek and love Star Wars, and I loved the last Trek movie and am really excited for this one. I think it's still a week away here in the US.

Also, considering the same guy is making the new Star Wars movie, this bodes well.

Yes.

But actually because the new Star Trek is like Star Trek, but "without all the bullshit", which is the tech babble and politics. I like some of that bullshit.

I like the old Star Trek movies (Insurrection was garbage, though) and the new ones.

TNG is the best Star Trek series and also the best to join the whole thing. Whatever you do, stay away from Vger Voyager. I absolutely hate Janeway.

The original show is good for jokes and fun characters, a lot of the stuff (plot, CG, etc.) is very outdated.

I'm going to watch it on the 24th or 25th.

Since I'm a JJ Abrams fanboy, I'm happy he also gets Star Wars and I'm sure he'll do a better job than Lucas did with Episode 1 and especially Episode 2.

Hey, I liked that old "bullshit". Which is why I said that the new movies feel more like Star Wars because there was so much more action rather than tech and politics as I remembered from watching the TV series long ago. But maybe it's just my memory failing me. Regardless of that, the new movies still undoubtedly have a Star Trek flavour and approach to them which I now realized I enjoy much more than SW.

I didn't know Abrams managed to score both ST and SW for himself. He must feel very lucky about that. At the same time I imagine it's a lot of pressure for him to make the two franchises distinct enough now. I guess it could be a sort of a major test for him as a director. OTOH, with Star Wars, he'll probably be little more than the company's obedient bitch.

I can't stand Abrams' cinematography style, but despite that, I saw Star Trek last night an bawled my eyes out. It was awesome and I loved it. We also watched The Green Lantern last night (just because it was on) and I was falling asleep during it. Due to boredom or sleepiness? Probably 50/50. It's not really a good movie. But Ryan Reynolds is a hottie.

I watched Star Trek. I liked it, despite its problems. And Lord, were there a lot of problems. That script needed a couple more revisions or rewrites, because goddamn.

But I still had fun, so as a fun movie, I liked it. I am liking this return to space sort of movies. Space is so cool! (And thanks Ap for leveling up my love for astronomy)

Saw this today. Loved it so much. A few lines were not well thought out, but omg the twist man. THAT TWIST!!! Only someone who has seen the original would even understand the significance of what I'm talking about.

And one spoiler for the road.

I do not like the new design of the Klingons, they look like they are made of plastic and reject gypsy's rolled into one. And I suspect another Star Trek movie, which I don't mind at all. I love this cast.

The twist? I found the entire movie predictable. I could telegraph it the entire time (unless you're talking about the scene of yelling dramatically)

But I had fun regardless. I'm seeing it again tomorrow or sat lol

Well I had an idea on who Benedict was going in, but I wasn't sure. Then he said his name and I'm like oooh. And then I wasn't expect them to stuff all of Khan's history into one movie like that. Also, if you don't want to call it a twist, what do you call it. They twisted around the scene. Is there a better term to be used I'm not aware of?
