Oh, also, I just bought Civilization V after trying out the demo. I had never played a Civ game before, seems like it's a good franchise.

[/quote]

V is the easiest to get into, though it also lacks a few things the predecessors had. (especially Civ IV with its two addons was a real monster of complexity, though always easy to understand compared to games like Hearts of Iron)

However, I can't go back to IV now, having played V for ~100h and enjoying it's changes. Above all, having only one unit per tile and no more stacks of doom.

Had some time to play (Total War) Shogun 2 and it's really great.

It feels so much like a mixture between Shogun 1 and Rome. The roleplay-elements, you can level up nearly everything (besides normal units) in this game, is much more compelling than I've thought.

The battles feel great, though a bit small at times. I can't really put my finger on it why though. The battles in Rome felt just like they're on a more massive scale.

However, I haven't yet seen everything of course.

EDIT:

Your normal units actually also level up ! lol

I just realized Portal 2 was coming out in less than 5 minutes and impulse-preordered to save 10%. Might be too late by now.

edit: Oh. It was five minutes until something else. It is still coming out soonish though <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... stling.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':whistling:' /> .

I'm pretty excited for Portal 2. The new thing with the countdowns is: if they get enough people to get enough potato-achievements from the Potato Sack Pack, they'll release the game, even if it's earlier than the 19th. They're calling it GLaDOS@Home <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /weeeh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':weeeh:' />

Got into Oblivion recently. I kind of hated it when I started, but I've grown into it. It's got some weird things that I probably took for granted from Fallout, but I like it. I most recently finished up the Shivering Isles main story.

You should definitely look into the Mods for Oblivion.

Some of them (like Nehrim, but I don't know if there's an English version) are really great.

I've got a few. Natural Lighting, a backpack mod, Natural Weather/Vegitation/Habitat, Skip Intro, and a leveling mod that makes leveling easier for noobs like myself. I haven't gotten any major addition/conversion mods, but I think I'll save those for when I finish the main quest.

I've played it for more than 80h (without story mods) and only ever closed the first gate. haha

The main quest was so boooring and tedious.

The Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild quest lines were great however.

Yeah, I saw that one before actually ordering it.

However, I wouldn't have bought it anyway.

The next console I'm going to buy will be a PS3 in summer probably (or at least when The Last Guardian comes around).

L.A. Noire <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/wub.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I was worried it would be too short, but, with firmly half of the story cases done, I can just feel the cases getting longer ([butt joke]). The face reading conversation stuff is legitimately challenging and there is an openness to how you handle each case sort of. Just the existence of the star rating (based on how much damage to property, cars, and people you cause) really makes me want to replay the cases.

Also, the friggin DLC needs the PSStore (which isn't up yet). Great. But when that goes up, I'll get those and I've picked inFamous (on recommendation) and Dead Nation as my Welcome Back, Please Try To Trust Us With Your Credit Card Information Again Package. I'd feel upset about not registering an account on my PSP if I couldn't pirate any of the decent-looking games faster than it would take to actually register said account.

Update on LA Noire! So, I just finished it! I can't be sure, but I believe I clocked in at about 20 hours (I didn't get a chance to see my stats before the finale). I've got to say, this game has gotten me so disappointed in my ability to reason and investigate. I would get all the questions posed wrong and just feel bad. I've finished more than one case where my superior has explicitly demoted me back to patrol for doing so bad (of course, you can move on). I've only ever gotten kind of stuck on one action sequence; the real trouble is investigating. Finding clues and detecting lies are one thing, but choosing your destinations in a certain order picking between Doubt and Lie are the real challenges. And driving. Your end-of-case report tallies your car, people, and property damage and affects your star rating. So let your partner drive. Everywhere. Go and do the side missions later. I've racked up over $6000 in vehicle damage alone in one case. You get a trophy for, like, $100000! This is really another game that takes an established genre and truly makes it a "next-gen" experience. There are very little real menus (replaced with hand-based navigation), the game organically shifts dialogue and there really is a time-/turn-based element. The characters look great (though all the women's hair and faces look not so great) and the acting is pretty solid. I hit very little bugs and none that broke the game for me at all. The plots were a little obvious, though to the point where overarching narrative points really distracted me from Cole's reasoning and facts. I still have a lot to refine and discover and I can't recommend this game enough. I'm 100% ready for whatever DLC they offer.

There's an interesting problem for puzzle games like this and Portal: expandability. It's tough to create a thinking game with length. Games like this need a lot of pre-scripting and condition setting where action games mainly need spawn points, hit boxes, and jersey walls for cover. Both LA Noire and Portal 2 are confirmed for having DLC (Portal's even giving it away for free IIRC), so there's a real sense of good faith, but these games could do well with more meat in their well-established foundations. We don't need LA Noire 2 just for more Cole Phelps.

But, right now, I would buy the shit out of some LA Noire 2.

Been playing some Wii games (mainly DK Returns, SMG2) on an emulator with a real wiimote on my PC in 720p. I did good never to buy the horribly overpriced Wii, now I can play the few good games it has in a reasonable resolution.

I got my EverQuest II subscription renewed for 45 days for free because of SOE/PSN outage. Which is great for me, since I haven't had an active subscription for ~1,5 years !

You guys should also try out Portal Pro (and Portal Prelude), it has some really nice and hard puzzles. It's not as simple as Portal 2.

Neshcom, I agree L.A. Noire has been a fantastic game. It's a fun blend of Phoenix Wright with the mechanics of Red Dead Redemption, plus amazing graphics. The only thing I didn't like was the driving. I kept forgetting it wasn't GTA and realizing that reckless driving was going to hinder my overall case score. I used my partner to fast-forward me to the next way point most of the time, because it just became a pain. I haven't beaten it yet, but I've clocked lots of hours.

I've found that as long as you put on the siren and stay in the middle of the road (since the cars will always pull right) it's pretty easy to drive. Also proud that I cracked the BD case AGES before the actual case came up. Still got 6 or 7 more cases left.

I haven't been doing much gaming lately for various reasons, except for slowly working through Super Robot Wars Z2, which is amazing if you like that sort of thing.

Takashi Miike is directing a Gyakuten Saiban movie. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ek3run.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':eekrun:' /> It will end up either in awesome or in a disaster - I don't trust video game dramatizations at all, but then it's Miike and his love to play with all the conventions. His Yattaman was pretty awesome.

I don't know any of the actors names (Hiroki Narimiya as Phoenix, Mirei Kiritani as Maya, Takumi Saito as Miles), but for once I'm glad that Tatsuya Fujiwara isn't listed. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hatthe.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':whatthe:' />

I'll be looking forward to this, but honestly I'd take a new classic Ace Attorney game for DS over a movie any time.

Played the DNF demo and it was pretty underwhelming.

I will probably still check it out when it's released.

Also pre-ordered Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which got some reaaaally good previews based on the leaked beta. I didn't read any of the story though, since I don't want it to be spoiled.

Playstation brothers and sisters! The Welcom Back, Please Trust Us With Your Time and Information Again Please Please Pretty Please Package is up! Log on to the PS Store and follow the Welcome Back button to getting your two PS3 and PSP games (yes! you can get two from each, regardless of it your PSP is registered!)

My first pick was inFAMOUS, which kind of shocked me (<img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /lmfao.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lmfao:' />)because I had hesitated about that game twice now. The most recent time being after playing the demo for inFAMOUS 2 because 1) I was way overwhelmed by all the new powers and lack of context about the new game and 2) because the demo scrutinizes and spoils every single plot point from the first game. Still, I'm enjoying it. My only major criticism is that the morality/reputation concept seems tacked on at times.

My other pick from the WB,PTUWYTIAPPPP Package was Super Stardust HD which I'm finding really challenging. I feel like I had an easier time getting into Geometry Wars; SSHD is a little more confusing than it needs to be. Multiple asteroid types, multiple weapons, and a very vague of progression are the major hurdles. Still, I've been looking for an arcade-type game to sink a lot of time into.

Finished inFamous. Kind of a lame ending, but the whole game had a strange narrative device. All of the most interesting points were done in that motion-graphic novel style (which looks nice), but they present this stuff so fast (because that style doesn't lend itself to much lingering) that the most impactful parts of the narrative come across as tacked on. You rarely get to feel for the characters, so when important shit happens, you don't care. Plus, the ending just completely stops AT the twist. You don't get to take a minute and decipher what you've been told and Cole's feelings are just left sitting on the table for the next game. Example, the beginning of the game mentions, like, two weeks where Cole learns to control his base powers. Why is that part of the narrative completely separate from the in-game tutorial? Wouldn't that be more engaging?

Also, too many damn bad guys in that game get grenade launchers and rockets. Frustrating.

It's 10 bucks for 4 new characters and game modes. Far better deal than some map pack for an FPS.

You obviously weren't around in the 90s when you'd get a yearly iteration of Street Fighter for SNES at 90 bucks a cart.

I didn't say "Capcom is doing this for the first time and has never done this before". I obviously was playing SNES in the 90s.

It was a scam back then and is a scam now, since from what I know you have to buy the game again for ~30€ and there's no way to just buy the extra characters.

EDIT:

I see you actually can buy the characters for 15€, which is a rip-off. But that's just my opinion.

I played through it. It's not a great game, but it's not horrible at all. It's quite fun and has some challenging fights and platforming. Also, I like titties, explosions and dick and fart jokes. The load times are really the only major negative about it.

As soon as I finished I popped in Alice: Madness Returns, and that is a great game! Absolutely amazing atmosphere.

But I don't really have an opinion on DNF. The demo was uninteresting to me, so I didn't bother getting the game.
