The Johnny's Thread

Post by tsukinobyouin »

So since the board has been down lots of things have happened in JE. To catch up:

- V6's Vibes tour DVD came out. I downloaded it but haven't had a chance to watch it, anyone else have thoughts? All three of the new songs on the bonus CD were awesome, I hope they keep on this trend <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hmph:' />

- Takki's solo single is out, which I haven't listened to either. He performed it during this year's countdown though, and it was pretty gay. Even for JE.

- Speaking of, Countdown uh....happened! Uchi performed but it was pretty anticlimatic. Did anyone else feel like this year's felt really short and kind of weird? I really didn't like the whole three-places-at-once thing, it made things feel to jumped around. None of the "surprise guests" made much of an impact - Nicky and Uchi performed for a grand total of like...8 seconds each. Life also sucks a lot of Tsubasa and Kusano.

- More details are out on The SHINGOTONIN (special unit made up of Higashi, Mabo, and Ohkura) single. It comes out 2/4, and will come out in two editions. Regular has the a-side "Kyouka Suigetsu" and the b-side "Namida Kareru Made" plus karaoke tracks. The limited just has the a and b-sides plus a bonus DVD, which I assume will have the PV on it.

- KinKi's new single "Yakusoku" is very french and has very lame covers. It will be out 1/28 in two editions. Both editions include the b-side "Yume Hajime Hana." Regular edition also has the track "Loving" and the limited has "Tabidachi no Hi" as well as the karaoke track for Yakusoku.

- Arashi has a single coming out on 3/4. It's another double a-side, with one being the theme for Yatterman "Believe," and the other being the theme for Uta no Oniisan, which is sung by "Yano Kenta featuring Ohno Satoshi" called "Kumori nochi Kaisei." It's coming in three editions, b-side for the regular is still untitled.

- Speaking of Uta no Onii-san, it started this week and Maruyama Ryuhei from Kanjani8 is also in it, despite how little coverage the news has given to this fact <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':dammit:' /> I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, as anyone else? Thoughts?

- Kat-tun has a new single coming out on 2/11. It seems they're going back to being active again =| It's called "ONE DROP" and it'll be the theme for some drama Kame is in called "Kami no Shizuku." One b-side is called "D-T-S" and the other doesn't have a title yet.

...I think that's everything?

QFT the monologue makes it so epic ahhhhh I really loved the performance too it was like. Probably the best part of Countdown aside from Nagase <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hmph:' />

Fixed. No really, you guys actually liked the song? I mean it wasn't a terrible song, it was just another Takki solo. But the monologue made me laugh it was so silly and all the flying around in the performance took me back to like....every JE group's first concert ever, when they try to distract you from the fact that the group only has like 8 songs by all the ~CRAZY FLYING!! ~ The only thing I was really impressed with during the Takki part of countdown was the words coming down in water. Which has nothing to do with his song XD

Psh of course it makes you laugh if you take it seriously, but in a cheesy old fashioned way it works xD All the water was really nice, and the PV for the song isn't bad either.

My favorite thread is back <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/wub.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I missed you guys!! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I of course own and have watched V6's Vibes Tour and it is amazing!! I ended up loving every song off of the Vibes DVD single, so the fact that they sang every song off of it (while including all of the old favorites, as well as the 3 new songs, which I agree are great. Especially Nexplosion!!) made this a really awesome concert <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /dance.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':weeeh:' /> There were no solos this time, but they made up for it with a lot of dancing. Definitely watch it when you get the chance!! I also love the MC collection, because V6 are just hilarious in their MCs <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

And Countdown! Ahhhh!!! I watch it every year but this time I uh, actually went to it!! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ek3run.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Cal amazingly scored tickets, arena tickets no less, and so we went! It was just one big crazy JE party and we had a blast! I've always wanted to go to Countdown, and it actually happened this time. I still kind of can't believe I was there <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Lucky! It's a mini dream of mine to be able to go one day <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':weeeh:' /> I've always imagined it's the kind of concert that's much more fun to be at than to watch on TV. When you watch it recorded, it always feels kind of like it's jumping around a lot since it's kind of...one big medly. But I imagine live there's all of the excitement of the new year and being there with all the groups at once so it's more fun <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Also in other news, Sakurai Sho is coming to New York for Comic Con to do a panel on Yatterman with the director. Afterwords he's going to the movie premiere. Hell. Yes. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I missed you guys so much. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lmfao:' /> Thank god nothing huge happened, else I would have panicked and possibly started a conversation on livejournal. Heaven forbid.

Jessi I am so jealous you got to go to Countdown. There was so much Arashi this year, which isn't bad, except that meant there was less time for other people. And of course the ones that got shafted the most were Kanjani8 and, surprisingly, Tokio and V6 were barely there it felt like. The one thing I can't stand about Countdown is the camera work, though. They hardly do close ups. It drives me nuts.

When is Comic Con? I want to be there. Just for Sho. And also because my best friend goes to school in New York and I've been wanting to visit him. I bet it's over summer or something.

And I have nothing to say about Tackey's sound except that I hope it will grow on me.

As far as dramas this season it's pretty Johnnys-packed, but I haven't had the inspiration to try watching any of them. I'm curious to know what the Onii-chan blah blah one is with Ohno, because it looks ridiculous in the commercials, but it might just be some Yasuko to Kenji action. (Bytheway before I forget did anyone else hate the ending to Ryuusei no Kizuna? Not so much for the fact of the mystery being revealed, but it just felt very fast to me. And rather anti-climatic.)

I was pretty satisfied with it. It was a little fast, and Corinne and I called it in the 2nd to last episode. But the fact that it was a total shock then was good, rather than it being something that was obvious the whole series. I was annoyed at Mika's character for ruining what could have been a really touching moment, but other than that I think it tied up things well and had enough sadness to not feel cheap without being totally depressing (MAOU <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lmfao:' /> ).

I've started watching Uta no Oniisan and I like it so far <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Thinking back I don't think I've actually ever seen Ohno in anything before, so I didn't have any idea what to expect from him. But I think he plays the "tough guy" character pretty well. And I really lke Maruyama's character too, he just seems so pure and innocent <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... That's because he hasn't actually been in anything before <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':noway:' /> Aside from Maou of course, but that was just recently. The only other drama he's been in was one of those Saiaku no Date things and he's had a few bit parts in an episode here and there of a few things. I'm not sure what to say about Ohno. I thought he was awesome in Maou, and that Toma overacted a bit, but my (actually Japanese) friend Masako found Ohno to be bad and Toma to be good. Maybe it's a diference in preference? Or maybe my expectations for Ohno were just really low XD

Hi everyone!

So KinKi's newest single is out and it's called Yakusoku. If you watched countdown, you've already seen it. But the good news is that KinKi has extended their #1 streak yet again. I don't really think they had much competition this week, though. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' /> The single is alright. I liked it at first, but it hasn't really grown on me more than that. Is it better or worse than Secret Code? I'm not sure. I want a new album already, though..

I downloaded a .rar of all of TOKIO's performances of Amagasa from when they had released that song. I took mental notes.

Number of performances: 8

Number of times Nagase sung the song on-key: 1

Number of times Nagase lipsynched: 1 (See: previous line)

Number of times Nagase entirely gave up on the high notes: 2

Number of stupid costumes: 5 members x 8 performances = way too many bowler hats for Taichi.

I love that song. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

In other news. Tsubasa is doing something. He has a solo tour. Good job hanging out, Tsubasa!

I still haven't had a chance to give the Yakusoku single a proper listen. The cheesy-frenchness was a little offputting, but I ended up liking it by the end of the Countdown performance.

Sad news:

Former member of Four Leaves (one of the early founding groups in JE), Aoyama Takashi, passed away due today due to liver cancer at age 57. He is apparently the second former debuted Johnny's Jimusho member to pass - the first was Maie Hiromi of the very first JE group "Johnnys" who passed in 2000 (age 54). I doubt anyone here knows who either of them are (I'm familiar with the two groups, but not their individual members), but it's still sad to hear about people going so young. Fandom chatter at the LJ post where I read this news says that when Maie passed, JE didn't give any condolances, send any flowers, or react at all. I'm curious if this is true, and if it'll be the same for Aoyama. While I don't hear songs by The Johnny's being sung by juniors today, they do Bulldog by The Four Leaves all the time. It would be kind of strange not to acknowlege it at all.
Just jump right in! We don't discriminate against people that don't know the groups well. Each person in the thread pretty much likes a different group (with a little bit of overlap), so we all lack knowledge about a group here and there. As long as you're not a moron about it (which you don't seem to be XD) we're more than willing to help you catch up/learn. My first recommendation is to ditch Arashi's first album. There is a grand total of like...one good song on it that's not a single. There's a smattering of good stuff between the 2nd and 3rd albums, but 4th album and on are where the jams are at. Between those of us that post there, we probably have a good deal of JE stuff so we can always help you out by uploading recommendations. I also suggest forgetting Kat-tun entirely, but that's just me <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
I thought I'd bring this over here since it'd be teetering on off-topic if I went ahead and replied to it in the intro thread.

That's very good to hear! I'll try and keep up as much as I can.

Yeah, I listened to the whole thing and thought "Ehhh..." and then I put A.RA.SHI on deathloop and all was well. I was watching a chronological playlist of their PVs (I've gotten up to Sakura Sake, I'll listen to the other part in a bit) and so far I like Kansha Kangeki Ame Arashi, Kimi no Tame ni Boku ga Iru, Kotoba Yori Taisetsu na Mono (dang these names are LONG), HERO, and Sakura Sake. I'm mostly listing these for my own sake so I can remember which ones I like. I'll go ahead and DL their 4th album (I use jpopsuki).

Any other recommendations? Someone told me that I should get into SMAP but their discography is rather daunting...

(About KAT-TUN... I mostly like their personalities... Watching Cartoon KAT-TUN is a good time-waster. When I hear them perform their songs, they're OK... but I'm not nuts about them. I keep thinking Kamenashi is "Shuuya", though...)

Personally, I'm not that into SMAP. They have a song here and there that I've enjoyed (and I've by no means listened to their whole discography, mostly just recent stuff and a few of the superhits), but generally they don't do much for me. Out of what I have listened to, I'd recommend Shake, Orange, Bang! Bang! Vacance, and Yozora no Mukou.

Going down the Johnny's age hierarchy from there, TOKIO is pretty awesome but also has a duanting discography. Some of my favorites are Seishun, Honjitsu Mijukumono, Sorafune, Ashita wo Mezashite, Love is here, Boku no Renai Jijou to Daidokoro Jijou, glider, Kanpai, Kimi wo Omou Toki, Gourmet Fighter, and anything off their cover album TOK10. Nagase's solo project "Sakuraba Yuuichiro" has some good stuff to, all written by Tsunku.

I'll leave the V6 recommendations to Jessi, as she knows them much better than I do. I will throw in that their Vibes album is the shit.

I'll leave KinKi Kids recommendations to Corinne for the same reason. Garasu no Shounen, Zenbu Dakishimete, Snow! Snow! Snow!, and Natsumoyou are some favorites of mine.

From Arashi, keep going with PVs. They've had a pretty strong run of singles since Sakura Sake, so I think you'll find a few more you like. My personal favorite albums are their 4th (Iza, Now!), 7th (Time), and 8th (Dream-A-Live). There's good stuff on all of the others, but those are the ones I think are solid almost all the way through.

You can pretty much skip over Tackey & Tsubasa, most of their songs sound the same. I really only like Yume Monogatari, Venus, and x~dame~.

News is really hit or miss for me. Like extremely. I like Cherish, weeeek, Sayaendou, Ai Nante, and surprisingly Ryo's solo from their last album, "ordinary."

Kanjani8 I happen to love, but I can see how other people might not. They have a lot of songs that are kind of comedy songs, so that doesn't appeal to everyone. My personal favorites are Naniwa Iroha Bushi, F.T.O, Osaka Romanesque, Misetekure, Osaka Rainy Blues, Suki ya nen Osaka, Osaka Obachan Rock, Goujou ni GO!, Zukkoke Otokomichi, WONDER BOY, Wa ha ha, and Musekinin Hero.

I hate Kat-tun so I have no recommendations there XD Other people might though.

Hey! Say! JUMP hasn't really done anything for me so far, but their most recent single Mayonaka no Shadow Boy was good.

Other temporary units/soloists to check out:

Domoto Tsuyoshi's solo work. He's released stuff under his actual name as well as under the names "ENDLICHERI☆ENDLICHERI" and most recently "244 ENDLI-x." Machi, Someiyoshino, Sora ga Naku Kara, Kurikaesu Haru, Sayonara Angelina, Kore dake no Hi wo Matai Dekita no Dakara, Kizu no Ue wa Akai Blood, Rainbow wing, Help Me Help Me, and Say Anything are all awesome. Toraji Haiji, Shuuji to Akira and Trio the Shakin were all good one-shot units.

Shameless self promotion here, but if you have trouble finding any of that stuff because you can't figure out what album/single it comes from, my site has most JE groups' discographies indexed. If you still can't find stuff, just ask one of us for it. Everything I've recommended I have, of course.

It could probably keep you busy for the next month at least. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' /> The songs you like from Arashi are practically the same ones that got me into them. My favorites that got me into JE were/are A.RA.SHI, Kotoba Yori Taisetsu na Mono (it's even better live!), Sakura Sake, Kansha Kangeki Ame Arashi and Kitto Daijoubu.

As for TOKIO, just look up anything released from and in 2006 and all of the material is extremely good. Maki recommended everything I was thinking of.

For KinKi Kids.. I'm not sure if you'll like them. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':kodama:' /> Their best songs are Ai no Katamari, , Bonnie Butterfly, 99% LIBERTY, Harmony of December, Love is... ~Itsumo Soko ni Kimi ga iru kara~, Giniro Angou, Biroodo no Yami and Eien no BLOODS. (The last video is a really interesting PV <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':omgwtf:' />) The best album from them is F Album, but I Album is also good. Their show, Shin Domoto Kyoudai, is also my favorite among the JE shows but it's rare that it gets subbed.

SMAP's discography scares me too. I tend to listen to something of theirs if they release it, but going back through some 40 singles is scary.

Actually, there's a song by KinKi Kids that I really like called "Glass no Shonen" that I found by downloading the yearly top 100 Oricon singles for the past 10 years (it was quite a feat, I still haven't listened to all of them), but I don't know much about their other stuff... I think I'll like them if that one single is any representation of what sort of music they do.

SMAP is... crazy. I know about "Lion Heart" and a couple of their other hits, but there's no way I'm going to find a playlist of their singles on youtube and sit still listening to all of them. I might do them last, though.

^ Garasu no Shounen was KinKi's first single ever, and unlike most JE artists I'd say it's pretty representative of their stuff overall.

So Ohno and Nino continue to play drama tag. This spring, Nino will be starring in a drama special called "DOOR TO DOOR~Boku wa Nouseimahi no Top Salesman~" (I'm a top salesman with cerebral palsy). As the title pretty much says, it's about a salesman (age 22) with cerebral palsy. It's supposed to continue along the lines of Nino's previous drama specials "Sukoshi wa, Ongaeshi ga Dekita Ka na" and "Marathon" in being a moving drama about living with a disease/condition/etc. I'm hoping that it'll be more like Marathon and be moving with lots of sadness, but not the Sukoshi wa level of sadness where you start crying 20 minutes in and just never stop XD It's based off of an American TV-special. Hopefully it won't be Lifetime-esque corny. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

There's some controversy right now over whether or not Ryo actually wrote "ordinary". A lot of people are saying he lifted the song from ACIDMAN.

Compare ordinaryto ACIDMAN's "Slow Rain"

At first I thought "I doubt he did.." (not in personal faith about Ryo's character.. I barely know anything about him.. but moreso in faith that JE themselves would have noticed somewhere along the line), but after listening to ACIDMAN's song.. they're nearly identical in structure and chord, especially on the introduction and the main verses.

Usually when these accusations are made I can't tell at all, but this one is pretty blatant. God damnit Ryo, that was the only song on that whole album I liked and the only thing you've ever done that didn't make my ears bleed <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /sleep.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

<img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /lmfao.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':whatthe:' /> Now that I've heard more about it I'm just confused though. The first post someone made about the drama said it was based upon the TV special, but the official site says the original work it's based off of is the book about Bill Porter's life (the real life guy this is about) written by one of his friends. Also reading more, they say this drama is the last in this "series" of yearly specials. I hadn't realized they were all done by the same staff and considered to be a "series."

It could also make sense because, supposedly, he forgot to write the song (or wasn't told) until the day before they were supposed to record, and had to write one out quickly. The chorus sounds different, but I can definitely see the similarities. Maybe he pulled a Nacchi and just had the song in the back of his mind...? The Ryo-lover in me hopes so. Or, actually, the Ryo-lover hopes it's just a coincidence. Although I'm not sure how anyone writes songs anymore without them sounding like another song. It seems near impossible by how many songs there are now.

:/ I like Ordinary better than Slow Rain, however.

Oh-btw-Pi and TnB, you must document everything about the possible meeting. I want to go so badly. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ssh:' /> Oh to be a broke college student.

I don't know...I think it's one thing if you listen to a song and go "Man, everything H!P puts out sounds the same these days" or "This kind of reminds me of..." In those cases, it probably is just a case of the composer lacking creativity or unconciously having another song in the back of their mind. That's how I always saw the stupid scandal over George Harrison's My Sweet Lord. The song his supposedly was ripped off of was in a totally different style, there were just some similar melodies in the chorus (Sorry for my lack of proper music terminology XD). In this case though....the two songs sound almost identical. Like if you listen to them back to back, you could almost see one as being a remake of the other. Pi mentioned that Ryo supposedly even has ACIDMAN listed as one of his favorite artists somewhere, so sadly I think he's going to lose out on this one =/ And by lose out, I really just mean he might have to make an apology or something. I doubt JE will take the same measures as H!P did with Nacchi unless ACIDMAN sues him or something.

The SHINGOTONIN's single is out <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMQhJtswE5M

It's....not as good as I was hoping. It's a ballad, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it kind of drags. Mabo's mohawk looks totally out of place in the serious business dramatic PV XD He sounds much better than I remembered, but he still does this weird head bob thing when he's singing. Check out the de-a-i at 3:35 <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hatthe.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Also the water dancing would be a lot cooler if they were doing more than just shuffing their feet around in it.

I want to like the song because Higashi getting to sing is rare these days but....it's going to be hard <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /sleep.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':dammit:' />

<img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> I can't take this PV seriously at all. The song itself isn't that bad, I prefer seeing Johnnys guys doing more upbeat songs, but it's not totally boring. And the voices all sounded good. But...it all just came off a bit ridiculous. The saxophone in the background and the water. My favorite part is the very end, where they all do this dramatic spin and Matsuoka is just a tad bit behind the rest.

And as for Ryo, yes, I agree. I just don't want to admit it to myself. Part of the reason why he's my favorite is because he usually writes good songs, and this was the best so far. What can you do, I guess.

This is random, but I've been curious about it for awhile now, on the wiki pages for Shige it says he has narcolepsy, but I was wondering if that was true or not because I can't find any source information.

HAHAHA I hope so. Was this on the English wiki or the Japanese? Not that either is really more reliable than the other, but occationally I've noticed some of the Japanese wiki pages for JE members cite a source for random factoids like that (he said it on his radio show, it was in this magazine, etc.).

It was on the English wiki I saw, but I've also seen it on several fansites. (But then again, they could have just taken it from the English wiki.) It wouldn't be too shocking. I think I've seen interviews where they talk about him always being really early. (Which sounds like it wouldn't make sense with a narcoleptic, but I have mild narcolepsy and it can cause insomnia as well, so in a weird round about way, it would make sense for him to get up early.)
