K-pop.

Post by Pflaume »

I am just barely discovering some Korean bands I don't hate, and it's pretty awesome.

My main squeeze right now: Wonder Girls. I know more than one of you here likes them. I recently found this mildly disturbing video. Sohee's face during some of those shots is absolutely epic.

Nobody isn't as good to me as their previous singles, but their songs are pretty consistently awesome.

I would love some suggestions, videos, etc. for more awesome stuff. I don't personally enjoy boy bands at all, though, be warned.

Wonder Girls are awesome. One other korean band that you might be interested in is Girls' Generation with their new song Gee. It's really really addicting.

I have heard of them! All my friends are nearly obsessed with that song.

It is really catchy. Ugh.

I lovvvve Gee. It's too addictive. I had to buy it after the 20th time in a row I listened to it. Heh...

I also looooove Wonder Girls. In addition to them I've really been into Son Dam Bi. Her Michesseo was my favorite Kpop song from 2008. I also quite like the chorus of new group Brand New Day's song, but the rest of it is pretty forgettable unfortunately. And though she's not too popular, Bae Seul Ki makes some really good music.

I'm not one for boy bands either, but I loooove Big Bang. They're just a catchy music making machine. I like the songs from the band proper, and from Taeyang. Along with that last song, while I was in Korea this summer I really took a liking to these songs from Uhm Jung Hwa, Davichi, and [unfortunately] SG Wannabe.

Umm, and they're not really in the pop genre per se, but I have to mention Jaurim wherever I go. Because they are the best and most consistent Korean artist I listen to.

If you wanted to look into older Kpop, for me this year was one for big discovery in that area. I fell in love with Park Ji Yoon, Uhm Jung Hwa (this IS the same person I mentioned above. Plastic surgery does strange things), S.E.S, Fin.K.L and my longtime favorite Baby V.O.X. I also discovered '60s artist Jung Hoon Hee, who is a goddess.

OH. and I'm not too fond of them, but the other girl groups who are pretty big now are Jewelry (this song was freakishly popular), Brown Eyed Girls, and Kara.

Son Dam Bi! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/wub.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';/' /> That was one of my favorite Kpop songs from 08 as well. She's fairly new, so she only has a couple of mini-albums and a few random digital singles, but she's pretty good.

YES! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/wub.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':dammit:' /> Bae Seul Ki is pretty awesome. I wonder what happened to her last year, though? Her last album was in late '07.

She only has two albums out, but they range from pop to hip hop to dance to ballads, most of it really good. here are some

samples of songs from her second album. I own this, if you want me to send it to you. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lmfao:' />

Oh, and there's Clazziquai, also, whose discography I owe you. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... stling.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Her company was planning to put her in this girl group for a little bit, but then decided to let her stay solo and work on her acting career. Which I was quite worried about for a while. Especially as she's basically the only recent solo artist I follow that still puts out stuff. I loved "Bad Boy"/her first mini album and I just recently listened to (and fell in love with) her "Cry Eye" single. (the one that bombed) So she has put out pretty much great consistent pop music since she started. I didn't want her to be in another no name girl group.

Amd Bae Seul Ki had some rumors of putting out her 3rd album last September, but nothing came to fruition. She's been dead music wise since she stopped promoting "Dagawa" early in 2008. She mostly been doing modeling for the past year. Which is unfortunate. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

I'm more about the ballady singers, myself, although I've got the odd song here or there from a random group I saw back when I got some Korean music channel (M-Net?) Mostly, though, I listen to Wax. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Wax:

- Hwajang eul Gochigo (also, check out part 2 of the music video)

- Lucky

- Goodbye

- Aejuka

- Yeoja neun Sarang eul Meokgo

There's more I can think of, but I'm sure this is long enough already.

Gee is ridiculously catchy and I already love it.

I also love Seo in Yeung's Cinderella oh my god is it catchy.

asdf, I so want to get into kpop, but I never knew who to start with (a lot of groups I heard before didn't really interest me) and I didn't know where to go to get the songs that come out. I did really like the songs from Wonder Girls, and of course Clazziquai. (yay sadude)

With this thread I'm getting a lot of the whos and whats, but still no wheres! Is there some site like jpopsuki (which only has kpop occasionally uploaded) that's more reliable for getting kpop?

These are some of my first forays into kpop, so thanks everyone for the great recommendations.

I think there's also a torrent site called BoAjjang. I don't use torrents though, so I'm not sure how extensive/reliable it is. (or if it really has Kpop for that matter. >.>; )

I've been totally addicted to the Gee song for the past two weeks <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ek3run.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I tried to find Girls' Generation fan sites for info but seem to come across more anti-fan sites. Some people seriously hate SNSD. Ironically, I find these are the sites that have the most up-to-date news about them.

My favourite is Soo Young <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/wub.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I'm learning their names!

Thanks for all of the links and suggestions everybody <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... deways.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I'd like to get into more K-pop too, so this is great way to learn more stuff.

I haven't seen anyone mention Epik High yet, though, so I'll throw their name into the mix! If you're into hip-hop/rap at all, definitely give them a try <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ohyeah.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Fly -Super poppy, and really catchy. I've listened to this song so many times I can pratically sing it all and I don't even know Korean <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

FAN -Creepy video, but great song.

Oh! I forgot to mention the ever awesome one-time group Anyband which consists of BoA, Tablo from Epik High, Xiah from DBSK (aka Tohoshinki), and some jazz pianist named Jin Bora. They only released one single with the songs TPL (Talk, Play, Love) and Promise U.

(saver like, Shinhwa, who have more, uh, mature fans?) It was intense.

But yeah, the Kpop fandom was always full of intense fans and on the opposite side a LOT people who hate the groups.

For example when Yoon Eunhye joined Baby V.O.X for their 3rd album, people who were their fans for their 2nd and 1st album felt, uh, betrayed in a sense. And one person went up to her and shot a mixture of vinegar and soy sauce in her eye.

But yeah, if there's even a RUMOR about a girl celebrity going out with a member from a boy band or something, they will automatically get rabid anti-fans.

(The album they re-released as "Baby Baby Repackage".) Overall it seemed that people REALLY liked the album, but I get into it save for the cover "So Nyo Shi Dae". [it's a 1989 song where I assume they got their name from. Though it was their 2nd single.]

This was their first song: "다시 만난 세계" [tashi mannan segye]. I think their first big hit was "소녀시대" [so nyo shi dae]. And "Kissing You" was big too.

For lyrics, the only definite site I know is Aheeyah, but it hasn't been updated in almost a year. The most active place I know of is the lyrics forum at Soompi. But it's massive and has no search option. Plus the people there aren't sharpest knives in the knife factory...

SHINee - Noona You're So Pretty (a.k.a Replay). I'm learning the dance with a group of others for an International Night performance at my school, and..

I came home and watched the Naichau Kamo PV after like, three hours of dance practice, and was all FUCKING MOMUSU AND THEIR FUCKING EASY DANCES RRAAAGGHHH *hulk-like rage*. It's really difficult. D:

(here's the dance version of the PV for a better idea.) I'm dancing as the one in the hat, Onew.

Plus, I do really like the song. It's this new catchy blend of pop and hip-hop that kind of... I don't know, embraces you. It's not fakey pop, and it's not thugs-n'-ho's hip-hop, it's just a really pleasant in-between.

As someone who has ALWAYS been the nerd girl, I feel righteous indignation at the video story. Visually it's great, though, and darned if I haven't been breaking it down to that song every time I drive, lately.

DE LA DE LA THAT THAT THAAAT GIRL. *booty shaking goes here*

Also, wow, that SHINee song is actually pleasant to listen to. I almost always want to shoot boy bands the second they start singing, asian or otherwise.

1. They did a reality-type-show recently called Factory Girl, I think they may have been interns at ELLE Korea or something like that? You could try that, I've heard it was pretty good.

2. Just... YouTube search them. You'll come across an eternity of variety show clips, and usually they're fairly entertaining. A show called Star Golden Bell, for example, might be a good place to start? I'll ask some of my fan friends for their favorites and will come back to you with findings.

3. Google song titles, you'll come up with stuff. I think you shouldn't have much trouble finding lyrics, especially since they're quite well-known and have a relatively small discography. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... deways.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' />

Soompi is like the JPM of k-pop... but possibly worse. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... cepalm.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> You might get Soompi results from googling, and you could go to those links, but wandering around in there is like traipsing through a field of poppies a la Wizard of Oz, but instead of falling asleep, you'll just lose brain cells. If you wanted, I could scan the lyrics from the Baby Baby repackage album booklet (my friend gave it to me.. long story).

4. I do warn you, though.. while most everything about MM on the internet is positive, nonchalant, or just kind of snarky, SNSD has anti-fans like nobody's business. While you're out and about searching them, you will probably run into some angry people professing a very deep hatred of them. They're mostly just crazy teenage girls with nothing better to do, but don't let the negativity color your perception of them. I'm kind of ambivalent about SNSD, but I have a lot of friends who are big fans, so I try to keep a positive outlook.

5. If you want downloads, I could provide, of course. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... deways.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Re: K-pop.

Son Dam Bi has a new "album" coming out. Here's a clip of the lead song.

It's half a re-hash of her past 2 mini-albums and half mostly lack luster new songs. But the title song sounds like it'll be another great dance hit for her. I already ordered it. :X Her and Wonder Girls are really the only active Kpop artists I'd buy anything at once.

The concept kinda reeks of Uhm Jung Hwa's DISCO, but it still works.
