I don't get attached to the Kenkyuusei girls until I see them perform. So many of them just don't make it! I think in a few months we'll be able to tell who is staying though.

Those girls have provisionally passed. They're not full KKS yet.

AKB48's new single "Kaze wo Fuiteiru"! It's very simple, but I actually like it a bit. The song is so nice as well. I don't expect this one to sell as much, but who knows since it's a song for the disasters that happened.

The dresses are hideous but I actually prefer this song to FuraGe. It's calm and with a good beat. The PV is simple but it works, not like...Romance, Irane simple. >.>

The 48 Japanese Schoolgirls Aiming to Take Over the World

A surprisingly competent and up to date article about the AKB franchise. Didn't expect one like that in Western media, after at best brief mentions in the World Curiosities sections, often put next to Hatsune Miku etc. From the amount of detail I would think it was written by a genuine wota, if it wasn't for the level-headed and realistic judgement and naming things for what they are ("Musically, they sound unremarkable and reminiscent of the similarly marketed groups before them, the worst tendencies of Europop fused with dinner-theater cheesiness"). Special mention for mentioning Morning Musume as one of the sources of the successful formula.

Not going to quote the whole thing because it's too long, but I recommend reading it regardless of your stand regarding AKB.

48 adult women dressed as school girls
1) There's more than 48 of them

2) None of them were even in uniforms then

3) They aren't all adults!!

But interesting to see them in western news! GO AKB!

You're nit picking an article that's trying to generalize something that's pretty hard for someone who doesn't know to understand. I'm sure the author of the article knows there are more then 48 and that they aren't all adults, but to break everything down would probably cause the article to turn into a essay about 48 and that's not what he was trying to do. Also, their main thing is the uniform. They might not have been in uniform then, but they as a group are known for their crazy awesome interpretation of the classic school uniform.

Well true, but I wish they would have said girls ranging from 13-25 or something. To say 'adult' gives a weird vibe.

It means there isn't a backlash. People in general think it's weird, my bf's friend was over to stay for a few days and I told him they were all adults too because I didn't want him to think I was odd for watching teenagers running around in school uniform. It makes sense for a Western article.

Ah right. For a westerner I'm too used watching seeing underage girls since I've been into idols since forever ago, but I can see why they would say it that way now!

Thanks, Aine! That article was interesting, the idea of a 'NYC48' at all is interesting to think about. I wonder why Akimoto chose Italy as his dream place to infiltrate the western market?

Kaze wa Fuiteiru! PV is simple, but quite good. The beginning with the door is pretty and quite creative, and effort was obviously put into it so even if it's simple, it's not boring.

Those things on their heads, though.

I think Italy is really good with Japanese stuff. When I was there I saw loads of anime and 'Learn Japanese!' kind of stuff everywhere. So perhaps they would latch onto it a lot better than a lot of other European countries. I reckon Germany would be a good bet too.

^ I love the monster in that PV. So funny and cute.

Yessss I finally watched the whole PV and I like the song now! The pv was perfection as well, Mariko looked gorgeous and Reinyan positively shone. The only thing I am still grrr about is the lack of Rie in the video! Needed more Rie!

But this director filmed a TON of their videos: Keibetsu, Iiwake, Oogoe, Yuuhi...@_@

AKB 48 is in a lot of Kohaku Uta Gassen (the New Year's Eve music marathon). The main girls do back-up for a lot of other acts, including dancing with five guys I didn't recognize. (I'll post screen grabs when I have the time.) There's one big AKB 48 number early on that's a special medley that, as it builds, keeps adding members until it looks like there are at least 100 girls on stage, maybe more. Sayaka Akimoto is in it at one point. Pretty impressive.

Is there a good website that tells us who's who in AKB48 with roman letters and rows of pix? I still can only i.d. the main girls who showed up in New York over two years ago and there are some familiar faces I should know but don't.

Madara.... seriously?

I don't do posts like that for my health.

Though as of now it's out of date what with HKT48 and JKT48. I'll have to sit down someday and update it with the newer girls. There's just no way you can remember them all, no way. Unless you live in Japan and have access to the girls 24/7.

Each of the 48 groups, I linked to their main websites. Just go to the profile/member pages and you'll see all the girls with their names underneath. (Aside from the JKT48, I linked directly to the members page.)

Also there were 210 girls on that stage, all of the main groups from AKB to JKT. Johnny's had them beat though, N.Y.C had 244 of the Johnny's boys on stage.

Random AKB thoughts.

I was watching that one show with Nakai (he's dressed up like an airline stewardess or something and it is really emotionally manipulative) for the special on AKB48. It was a look back at their origins, complete with actresses re-enacting every pivotal moment in the girls' public and private lives. There was much crying to be had within the reenactments and on stage as each girl remembered how hard it was for them to retain faith in their project (and fight against bullying etc etc). Since I only noticed AKB pretty recently and still only recognize the main 6 girls or so, it was amusing to see old clips of them when they were so so young and cute!

I found 3 things pretty interesting:

1. How much they fit into Japan's favorite underdog-ganbatte-paradigm. This is fairly standard and is also what promoted 1st gen Morning Musume into the spotlight (and what caused Morning Musume's demise after 4th gen).

2. Akimoto's insistence they hit their big break BEFORE the older girls left high school.

3. The "everyday" idol is a real phenomenon. I was absolutely astounded and slightly skeeved out at clips of the girls performing in the tiny Don Quixote theatre and interacting regularly with guests.

It made me wonder about the future of AKB. Since the start, the group has been dominated by the same popular faces. Now that AKB is this amazing, record breaking success, can they retain their popularity now that Factor #1 (underdog) is moot? AKB is splintering off so many side groups too. Same with #2 - Mariko Shinoda is 25 now.

But mostly, how does #3 work when AKB is so crazy successful now? All idol groups have handshake events and smaller fan club only events so the supporters can feel "closer" to the star, but AKB seems like it REALLY hinged on that intimacy. I wonder also how Tsunku's copy-cat idol cafe will fare under this model.

If Mariko leaves I will KILL SOMEONE. She said in the Documentary of AKB48 that she would only leave if Aki-P told her to. So we will know who to blame. She's very popular so I really hope she doesn't go anytime soon. I don't care if she's 25, she got voted 4th in the last Senbatsu ffs, she is only gaining popularity with age.

Also, their early song 'Rider' was about one of their very early fans who rode most days to the Akihabara Theatre to see them live, but then he died. So Aki-P wrote that song for him. That's how intimate they used to be with their fans, apparently they used to just chill and chat with them after the performances and stuff as well before they got popular.

I was also going to refer you to watch the Documentary of AKB48 movie. The girls are constantly asked to contemplate the future of AKB and their attempts at answers and hang-ups are pretty much in line with yours. Its easily the best documentary EVER to have ANYTHING to do with idols. It is so candid, honest, and just overall well-made it blew my mind. You hear some of the girls talk about things or say things that you would NEVER expect idols to talk about in official documents, and its not just some phony show-off for "shock value" or something. And not just goofy or cutesy things, I'm talking about self-confidence and depression issues, worrying about the future, personal hardships outside of AKB, true feelings about the group and their worth, lots of stuff that is avoided like the plague when it comes to anything involving idols. It really paints idols as wholly real people for pretty much the first time ever. And some may say that "ruins the magic" or something, but for me, it just made them that much better. You'll also see lots of that old footage you're referring to, as it covers their history somewhat chronologically from the very beginning auditions up until around when Chance no Junban came out (early 2011,) though it focuses largely on 09-11. You'll also see a few appearances and comments from Aki-P and some of the other people behind AKB as a whole, and you'll learn a lot you may not have known. Its not just a bunch of NG shots and stupid stuff, its a very real look at who AKB is and how they came to be who they are.

Also, I wouldn't really say they're "splitting off into so many groups" when there's only really 5 major side groups and 2 soloists (soon to be 3, as of March, I guess,) which is far less than Hello! Project had by 7 years into their running. The little one-off groups and SKE/NMB/SDN don't count as they're more or less completely different entities from AKB even though a small few of the girls will be a member of more than one of the groups at a time, and those other "48" groups will likely have some of their own sub-groups and stuff as well at some point.

Yeah, I really like how the girls aren`t just idols, but people too. And they aren`t just typical idols acting cutesy with boring songs that all sound the same. And with a group so large, there are a lot of different chracters, whichs makes it really interesting.

I just had to quote my own post from 2009 just to show how much has changed since 2009. I've gone from liking 3-5 AKB-related songs to now having a playlist of songs that I love from AKB-related artists that totals around 120 songs. Its like a whirlwind of awesome.

Ah where can I find this? Hello Online tracker maybe?

Yeah I don't follow the group very closely so I am probably wrong about the number of side acts. I could be mis-recognizing other big idol group competitors (like Passpo and stuff) as AKB spin-offs too. But, I just get the general sense that they are reaching media saturation and it is already confusing to keep track of the entire AKB family.

Thanks for that link, PQ. I don't know if it'll help, though. Problem is that once I get past the recognizable girls I can't process the others. There's one whom I'd like to identify, but there are at least a dozen pictures there that look like her. There's a certain type that Akimoto seems to like and he's just filled the group with that type.

Here's a shot of her from FNS:

Image

She's second from right, in between Haruna and Yuko. She's one of the main girls and I feel I ought to know her name. Unless, of course, I'm confusing her with another one.

Anyone?

Thanks.

Kashiwagi Yuki is someone you should know, she's always high up in the ranks of favorites. Kashiwagi is Captain of Team B and former Morning Musume auditioner. Listen to her and Haruna sing KoiING.

You should at least know your captains Madara if nothing else.
