GO BUY "9" ON DVD AND BLU-RAY TOMORROW, YOU BASTARDS.
First time I hear of this movie. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':danceman:' /> But the images on imdb got me intrigued. I'll check it out.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - Awkward title, but great movie. Animation is less dated than I expected. Now my second favorite Ghibli movie. B+
Which one is your first favourite?
Princess Mononoke. I should see that again to make sure it's as good as I remember.
Definitely do. It used to be my first favourite Ghibli until I watched Nausicaa. It's a very close second now though.

Cyborg She/Boku no Kanojo wa Saibougu

An extremely convoluted movie at the end. I can't say I hate it though. The first half is extremely entertaining and funny, but the "resolution" is so unrealistic and wtf-ish, they should have just stayed with the first initial explanation.

Haruka Ayase is very charming though.

Oppai Volleyball/Oppai bare

An ode to the power of breasts, beautiful.

I have a strong need to watch more Haruka Ayase movies now...

Randy Newman went and destroyed another Disney film by sticking his big ugly music style into what would have been an awesome return of Disney Animation. I can't stand Randy Newman, UGH! Unfortunately I'll have to wait till Rapunzel comes out later this year to hear some real Disney music as Alan Menken returns. (He did Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Pocahontas)

Also Disney is doing a version of The Snow Queen. I know there was an anime version already. Should be interesting. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I saw a bootleg version of 2012, I loled as the limo drove through a falling building, a RV dodged molten lava, and California imploded on itself. And everyone in the international space station was like, WTF? I'm sure that's on the cutting room floor. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/perv.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':danceman:' />

Should I spend the money to go see Avatar or wait for it on DVD? I so want James Cameron to fail, just a little. The Na'vi creep me out and keep bringing me back to Zelda and his fairy Navi. HEY LOOK LISTEN!!!

Oh and , ANOTHER Robin Hood movie, really? Did we need another one?

Neither. Avatar is horribly retarded. From a movie-lover point he already did fail.

As for the Robin Hood movie; I hate how since Batman Begins every movie of an old franchise/legend/whatever has to be extremely over-serious nowadays.

See Avatar in 3D at least. If you turn your brain off, it's not terrible, and the use of 3D is pretty much the whole reason for the movie to exist. If you can't do that, then there's no need to even bother with it on DVD. Either that, or just skip to the final half hour where it's nothing but insane action.

I saw Avatar yesterday. People are saying it's bad because similar stories have been done before? It's true, but 99% of fiction is like that. It wasn't the best movie ever, but it was better than most (I'd say all, but absolutes are bad) of the movies it was derivative of. Also absolutely worth seeing in the theater in 3D (the effect is subtle, so I don't know how much it really matters, but that's how it was intended to be seen).

It had a lot of "WTF?" false endings. If you've seen the other films of director Kwak Jae Young ("My Sassy Girl" and "Windstruck") you'll realize he does this stuff a lot. Although way too coincidental and unbelievable that a real life girl would look exactly like the made up cyborg girl it does resolve the "riddle" in the beginning where he meets the cyborg twice and she acts differently.

Have you read the manga? Thoroughly recommend it, and I'm the kinda guy that usually hates manga. It's wonderful to see the art and to get the full story. Although I would still say that the movie is better, and that the manga probably wouldn't have held my interest if I hadn't already seen the movie... But anyway read it. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':whistling:' />

I saw Bubba Ho-Tep! You know... Bubba Ho-Tep? What do you mean you haven't heard of it? It's that movie where Elvis is alive and in a nursing home, and together with old-JFK (who is black) they fight a mummy with a cowboy hat and boots!

No, it's real. I wasn't even drinking!... Well, not that much anyway.

Anyway it's a great movie, billed as a comedy/horror, which is it, but the way in which it is made is a bit unusual. The movie actually takes itself fully seriously, telling a typical horror movie story, but it uses such a crazy setting, set of characters, and premise, that everything automatically becomes hilarious. Bruce Campbell as Elvis actually really impressed me in this, although I admit I haven't seen much of him outside of the Evil Dead trilogy (and yes that means I haven't seen Burn Notice yet I'm getting to it). It was hilarious and goofy and well worth seeing, even if you're not into Elvis or horror. It's just top class entertainment, and it even has kind of a heartwarming side to it.

The last movie I saw was Sherlock Holmes. It's not faithful to his character, but I think it's a sensible adaption for our times. They could've done a lot worse with the character. I liked the slow motion "planning" segments, but they were too few, most of Holmes's wits came off as luck. The ending pissed me off too. If Holmes knew everything was a fraud, why on earth would he do that stupid ritual crap? The explanation at the end came off as Scooby Doo too. Rachel McAdams did a decent job, but paired against Law and Downey she didn't fare so well. As for her character, well, I always thought of Holmes as asexual so I found their flirtacious relationship weird and unneeded. But I am thankful it allowed a scene with an almost naked Downey to exist. Just once I'd like an action film to not have the stupid romance subplot. Really, there were three things I wanted from the movie - dashing Downey, hot Law, and good chemistry between them. And that's what I got. I'm happy. Set up the inevitable sequel too. I suppose they'll kill off Watson's wife in the next one and go back to the duo for the third.

Recently seen movies:

District 9 - Best aliens-oppressed-by-humans movie I've seen this year! Avatar was pretty great, but this was even better. A+

9 - I liked it. The visuals were very imaginative, but most of the characters were pretty uninteresting besides looking cool. Story was OK. B

Back on the live-action side:

Blood: The Last Vampire - the live-action version of the so-so anime. Likewise so-so. It does add to the anime story, but not always in a good way. At least twice throughout the movie I thought I was watching Twilight, and that's never a good thing. Some fight scenes were absolutely ridiculous and only passable if watching it as a party movie (and well into the party, too). It's saving graces however were a pretty lead actress, really nice colour grading, and two beautifully stylised and chillingly directed scenes. Is it worth it, considering said scenes make at most mere 15 minutes out of the whole movie? If you've nothing better to do or are in for some cheap laughs, or just like eye-candies, then sure, why not. 5.5/10.

700 Days of Battle: Us vs. The Police - unpretentious, not annoying, and enjoyably nostalgic teenage comedy/drama? It's more likely than you think! The title was making me think of a gangster movie, the beginning confused me greatly, but in the end it turned out as one of the sweetest and most pleasant movies I've watched. And really touching at the end, but nowhere near obnoxious sappiness and sugarcoating. Plus, it had a cute teenage trap, so things couldn't have been better. 8o 9/10.

Children of Men - things just got serious. Wish I have watched it earlier and in a theatre. I feel I use the phrase "one of the best/worst/most" way too much, but among all dystopian movies I've watched this is one is near the top of the list. I will need to look into other Cuarón's movies too, because I really loved his style in this one. I'm a sucker for long shots, so that has satisfied me even more. Also, while it's not the movie's main premise, the overall feeling it gives is that which I have each time I have the big displeasure of connecting my flights in London (and UK in general). It did have some religious undertones, but while religious over-interpretations of art piss the hell out of me, and religious allusions (or blatant evangelism to be more specific) in art largely ruin said art to me, I only realised most of those allusions or parallels in the movie when reading about it after watching. So I'm not gonna hold them against it. Strongly recommended. Another 9/10.

Definitely do. It used to be my first favourite Ghibli until I watched Nausicaa. It's a very close second now though.
But anyway read it. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Haven't read it - yet! Been wanting to for a long while now, but that's one of the things I definitely want read in a paper form, not off the screen. And because it takes research which printed version is the best, and they're not readily available to just go and buy them, it keeps getting postponed. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

But I definitely will read it. I love Miyazaki's drawing and painting style. Could stare at it for hours. I brought this wonderful watercolour collection book from the last Japan Expo and it remains one of my most prized possessions. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' />

(Of course you might have seen it already, in which case, disregard! I just discovered the show recently, so it was new to me.)

I watched Final Destin--I mean, THE Final Destination 4. It was pretty much the exact same movie as the other 3! When you watch it with friends and you make fun of the various plotholes and terrible acting and so on, it becomes almost like you're inside a MST3K episode, so in that sense it was very enjoyable. It also included tits in 3D! Although I didn't see the movie in 3D, but still...

Due to circumstances out of my control, I was forced to watch two movies -

Confessions of a Shopaholic. Stupid typical chickflick. My only moment of amusement was predicting the entire plotline of the movie, having the fellows denounce my predictions, laughing as they came true. They thought they got me at the ending, but thanks to an after the ending ending, all of my predictions came true -phew-. All those damn movies are the same. The leads had no chemistry, either. But the lead chick acted pretty cutely, a lot better than most chick flick leads, so I suppose she can make herself a good career playing the same character over and over.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Oh god. Oh god. Oh god. I wish I could go back in time and burn the script. If backups managed to survive, I would go back to the studios and put magnets to the CGI team's harddrive. Even then, I would blow up the carriers carrying the final films to the theaters. I can't even properly comment on how much this movie disgusted me. So let's leave it at that. (My hatred of chihuahuas had nothing to do with my hatred of the movie btw)

Speaking of chick flix (or what you might have thought was one), "Up in the Air" is not a chick flick. You might have thought it was one from the trailers, but it isn't, and that's why I probably liked it. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Dirty Harry - After seeing Gran Torino, I decided to watch more Clint Eastwood movies and Netflix had this one for instant streaming, so I chose it to begin with. I had also, not long ago, seen Zodiac. Knowing that Dirty Harry was (extremely loosely) based on the same true story made it much more interesting than it otherwise would have been. So overall, I liked it. Yay for police brutality! B

Moon - This one was completely excellent and if you haven't seen it yet, you must definitely do so. I could see most of the twists coming, but I don't count that against the film because it made it more fun to think about while watching. Yay for low-budget sci-fi and diabolically clean energy! A+

Dead Leaves - It was... unique. Not sure if it was good or bad, but I'm glad I saw it for the sheer bizarreness. Yay for weird animation and horrible correctional facilities! B-

Once again my buy list of films has reached 30+ so I decided Netflix was worth coming back to. It's waaaay better than it was when I quit last, so now I get to watch a ton of films and television, yay!

Delicatessen - A french film I saw because it promised black comedy, which is my personal favorite. It's more than ten years old, but I think it's aged well. It's a quirky little film that gave me an odd feeling after watching it. I can't decide if I like it or not. I honestly don't have an opinion leaning either way and it makes me feel weird. There is a "music" scene of note that involves a squeaky bed and all the daily chores of the tennants that is rather amusing. I suppose it gets two and half stars. .

The International - Very rarely do I fall asleep watching a film. I fell asleep. I think I was at the end because they conducted a "final plan" to take down the bank. After that, umm.... yeah. One star.

I saw a trailer for Death at a Funeral...which confused me at first, because I saw (and loved) a British film by the same name...and it seems like the same exact movie only with standard black jokes thrown in. Come on, you have some talented comedians in this film and that's the best you can come up with? Way to turn a brilliantly funny film into something akin to a Larry the Cable Guy flick.

Predator I now know where a large number of commonly quoted catchphrases are from, which makes me feel slightly smarter. The movie was mostly about huge men firing machine guns, which made me feel slightly dumber. I've read some of that was meant as satire, so I won't feel guilty about having enjoyed it. B

Drag Me to Hell I liked it a lot. It was horrific without using violence much beyond You Can't Do That on Television and did it very well. Gross though... B+

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen I had heard great things about it from friends and was expecting a great classic of incredibleness, so of course I was going to be disappointed. It was still very good, but I probably would have liked it better as a child. Although it would have taught me to fear doctors, which maybe wouldn't have been so good. B

Jennifer's Body My expectations were low and they were massively surpassed. I probably would have liked it even better as a teenager though.

On a side note, unrelated to the quality of the film, but possibly to my enjoyment of it, Megan Fox is no less attractive when she's eating a corpse. A-

I thought this looked good from the trailer and was planning to rent it soon. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':omgwtf:' /> Trailers are bad. I guess I should rent Delicatessen instead.

Moon. We were shown the beginning for our sound class and I decided to watch the rest of it. I really loved it, but I could've sworn that was the Wilson brothers. Also, my teacher ruined the movie for me, so don't ask anybody about it; if you liked 2001, just go see this.

Avatar - all I can do is admit that it did suck my cynical self in almost completely and made me feel some 12 years younger. And the air fresher to breather. And the civilisation even more hated than before. It was like a fairy tale I don't want to wake up from. And yes, I do realise that it had a good share of plot holes, that it's clean-cut black-and-white, sugar-coated, and brimful of tropes and corniness, and that barely any scene in it is something we haven't previously seen in other movies, including those from the same director and with the same actors (hello, Ripley). So there. Fuck the haters. Go see it and enjoy it - it's a piece of great craftsmanship if not anything else. And if it happens to hit your soft spot and speak to your inner child, then all the more power to you (but if it doesn't, you're probably wasting time and money not seeing it in 3D).
I promised myself to avoid any and all hype around Smurfs the Movie Avatar and only watch it maybe few years from now with nothing better to do,
And once again I proved to myself that it pays off to approach movies with as clear mind and as little spoilers as possible, regardless of the motivation to for that.

Romper Stomper - funny to watch a semi-indie 16mm 5-figure (at best) budget movie a day before watching the above. Makes you realise how many flavours there are to the art of film. About the film itself - it was random and confusing at first, but did manage to draw me in enough to somewhat care about what would become of the racist neo-nazi skinhead scum protagonists. I liked how the movie was not judging anything one way or another, but just showing it for the viewers to make up their own conclusions. It was overall pretty interesting, but I wouldn't normally recommend it. Unless you're into indie movies. Or Russell Crowe and his bulge.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Jean-Pierre Jeunet, enjoy your stay. If you decide you liked it or want some more material to help you lean either way, definitely check The City of Lost Children. And his other movies onwards too, maybe with the unfortunate exception of Alien Resurrection.

I'm always too lazy to write reviews. I also forget what movies I've seen, so. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

Inglourious Basterds - Pretty good, some issues with the violence, but nothing I haven't come to expect from Tarantino. I enjoyed the rich multiculturalism and smart dialogue, but the overall movie experience wasn't you know, fantastic. Just because I want to be cool and give ratings, I'll give it a B+.

Up - Great movie, highly enjoyed it, wasn't really what I was expecting at all, and in a good way. Loved the acting, the dialogue, A

The Hangover - It was funny, but its outrageous-ness was a little over the top sometimes, and became somewhat stiffly predictable. (Oh what more trouble did these darn fellows get themselves into?) But overall, not too bad, but it felt like a lot of other movies I'd seen before, but IN VEGAS. Again. B

Oh yay, I'll definitely check it out The City of Lost Children. If I like it I'll check out his other works as well.

Movies watched this weekend (everyone is using letters so I'll use those now):

Star Trek: Okay, I don't really like sci-fi (especially this brand of sci-fi) but I really liked this movie. Enough that I want to buy it. I might check out the television series too. I wish the making of segment had been expanded on, I really enjoy how J.J. directs. The only thing I really didn't like is the "origin" story for Kirk. That's a personal preference, I'm rather sick of origin stories in film. And lens flares! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':whatthe:' /> (And it utterly horrifies me that wanting to use a minimal amount of CGI in film is considered old school) A+

Love Me if You Dare (Jeux d'enfants) - I decided to give this French film a try late one evening. It's another older film, probably about six years old, but who really cares about age when it comes to films? The promise of a romantic black comedy drew me in and kept me engrossed throughout the film. I loved the director's, Yann Samuell's, use of color. In the past the colors are muted and have a sort of meloncholy feel. As time grows closer to present, the colors become more vivid until the very end, where the film becomes sepia tinted. Despite the games of dare becoming more and more cruel in nature, the audience still wants to keep cheering for the couple, which I applaud Samuell, for this is a mighty fine line to walk. I also loved the variations of "La Vie en Rose" used in the film. A-
Moon. We were shown the beginning for our sound class and I decided to watch the rest of it. I really loved it, but I could've sworn that was the Wilson brothers. Also, my teacher ruined the movie for me, so don't ask anybody about it; if you liked 2001, just go see this.
My boyfriend showed me that movie. It was AMAZING - I never thought I could be moved by a "sci fi" film. The actor was able to become 2 versions of "himself" in an extremely powerful way and despite the simplicity of the plot/set/etc, it communicated some heavy messages about humanity, etc.

Definitely agreed., but I think they were two different actors. The credits list two different guys, but he could've just been a stand-in...

Evil (Ondskan) - A swedish film about a young man sent to a boarding school because of behavior problems. It becomes a character study of the nature of "evil" inside of all of us, and how power and social hierarchy effects the characters. Really, it's about politics but I know jack shit about Swedish politics and I can't comment on any of it. I'm going to go with the former instead of a political allegory. I liked the character study and the ending. A

And I came across this fabulous list - 1000 Greatest Films of All Time. Now starts my new project, make it through the top 100. Once I get through the top 100, I can go through the next 100 and so on. I'm not going to burn myself out on the list, so I can only watch one from the list after I've seen a nonlist film I want to see. I've already seen more than half the list, but I'm all for watching them again. I don't know if I should do them out of order or not though...ah well. I'll decide later. Let's start!

01. Citizen Kane (Orson Welles) - I've seen this film about 20 times in my life. It's a brilliant film and still holds strong today. I think it has a huge backlash due to always getting number 1 on lists like these, but it changed the game for all films to come afterwords. So don't go in expecting THE BESTEST FILM EVVVAAAAR because there's more historical clout at stake. BUT it is an amazing film in its own right. Err... I'm going around in circles again. I love this movie, I love the commentary tracks (Ebert's is my favorite), I love it love it love it. So give it a try if you haven't seen it yet. The "Rosebud" line isn't a spoiler either; I don't know why it's treated as such; maybe it's a joke I don't get. A++

And as an aside, I wish I could have Criterion Collection-style covers for EVERYTHING. Video games, books, cds, non CC films, ect ect. They're so awesome.

Too many horror films lately. I should branch out.

The Mist - It was a very faithful adaptation of a novella I liked a lot, but somehow, I didn't like it quite as much as a movie. B

Daybreakers - I would happily see this again, which I will have to anyway to find out what happens at the beginning 'cause I got to the theater late. If you like stories about vampires, dystopias, fuel shortages, or spontaneous human combustion, you'll like Daybreakers. A

Pandorum - It reminded me of a lot of other things, all of which were better. There were things I liked, but not enough to recommend it. C

Seeing as it is raining outside, there is only one valid option for a film in my mind:

09. Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly) - This is probably the musical that sets the standard for musicals for me. Brilliant performances from both Gene Kelly (but really, does the man have a shoddy performance to his name?) in the title number and Donald O'Connor in "Make 'em Laugh". It also stars a young Debbie Reynolds and her determination to keep up with the veteran stars is so adorable (if you've seen it, watch her face during the dance numbers! :3) and impressive as she managed to hold her own. Jean Hagen's voice for Lina Lamont is absolutely hilarious, her scenes are quite enjoyable to watch. It's a bit cheesy, but the cheese works with the film and doesn't detract one bit. The background plot of the film, the transition to talkies, is interesting. I should really read more into that time. I wonder how many careers were destroyed in the transition to voiced roles. In any case, this film deserves its spot in the top ten and if you haven't seen it yet, by golly go out and watch it! A++
