I am actually curious about it but I have read the reviews. No one seemed to like it. I love Julie Andrews' Maria so I am not so sure if I should watch it. Inevitably, I have a feeling I will end up comparing the two movies ...

Well, you should know that this TV production is not the movie. It's the original Broadway musical. Two completely different art forms. A lot of changes were made when the show was adapted into a movie back in 1965. It should be compared to Broadway, not Hollywood.

You have a point. I'm sorry. It isn't fair to say anything without giving it a chance. I'll watch it just because I love the play. I haven't seen the Broadway so I have nothing to compare it to. My cousin's school did a play of it before. It was pretty hard to produce, so I should probably just think of the hard work placed into it. :)

I saw the movie first and then some time later the stage production by Cork Opera House. I liked the movie version much better. Maybe because of the first impression, or maybe because that stage version was actually weak. Or maybe a combination of those, though I'm leaning towards the latter option.

But I shouldn't be the one talking because I don't really like musicals that much in the first place. 8o The only two stage shows that actually reached the threshold of what I expect of a satisfying stage show were Cirque de Soleil's Mystere in Vegas and the West End version of The Lion King (on tour in Ireland so it might have been scaled down somewhat). And for the record, The Phantom of the Opera (again West End show touring in Ireland) was an utter disappointment and letdown.

Curiosity I guess. I'm definitely much more of a silver screen than stage creature so sometimes I feel like going out of my box and possibly even being pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately most of the time the only surprising factor is the degree of the show/production not living up to the expectations.

Home sick for the holidays, I did a blog entry on "The Sound of Music" for my film blog, tying in an anime version of the story and two Japanese music videos.

I really felt like the only person in the world who didn't like musicals, so this is comforting to see. I really just can't understand their appeal.

When I was a kid it was so much easier to appreciate musicals because so many then-fashionable movies incorporated songs and musical numbers into them in often wildly different ways. In a two year period in my adolescence I saw the following films which can be classified as musicals:
WEST SIDE STORY - based on the Broadway musical
HOOTENANNY HOOT - featuring a lot of country, folk, and "hootenanny" acts, a passing fad of the time which I couldn't actually describe because I can't recall
BEACH PARTY - the first of a series of teen comedies featuring singing stars Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello and a host of guest musical acts
ROBIN AND THE SEVEN HOODS - a Rat Pack gangster musical starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Bing Crosby, all living musical legends of the time
MARY POPPINS - an original movie musical combining live-action with animation and the subject of the current film, SAVING MR. BANKS
A HARD DAY'S NIGHT - the first film to feature the Beatles who perform several of their hits of the time.
MUSCLE BEACH PARTY - the second in the series and notable for introducing "Little Stevie Wonder" to the audience.
HELP! - the second film to feature the Beatles, this time in color, an actual plot and with new songs composed for the film.

And on TV we had variety shows where musical acts of all different kinds appeared after each other. And Top 40 radio stations played all different kinds of music.

Musicals became something of a rarity after the 1970s, after pop music fragmented into different audiences and radio stations began specializing in only one type of music rather than all kinds. And Broadway stopped churning out original musicals.

I don't know how many of you have ever watched the original Superman TV series from the 1950s, "Adventures of Superman." Its star, George Reeves, would have turned 100 today. So I devoted an entry on my film blog to Reeves and the show:

Does this even count ?

I don't care, but it's hilarious for me personally.

I have the History ch.. Discovery ch., National Geographic and Planet channels since about two months. They're mostly running US shows/documentaries (with GerDub) and they're nearly all horribad. Actually, they're so bad that they're hiliarious. Like those "storage wars" shows. I can't help but occasionally watch and laugh at them.

Yeah, it's pretty obvious that at least a lot of it is just staged.
In German there's the term "doku soap" for this kind of stuff, but the German ones are all just horribly bad and completely unfunny.

Some of the names of those shows translated into English are too funny:

<div>Lafer, lights, Yummy</div>
<div>Farmer Wants a Wife</div>
<div>Use in four walls</div>
<div>Helper with heart</div>
<div>Family help with heart</div>
<div>Families at the focal point (scripted reality)</div>
<div>Dummy alarm! - We're having a baby</div>
<div> </div>
<div>By the names of some of these shows alone, I can see just how horrid they are.</div>

Not sure where to post this, but I've got a reminiscence of the Beatles up on my blog. Today is the 50th anniversary of "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" hitting the top of the charts in the U.S., their first hit here. In the Cub Scouts that season, three other scouts and I dressed up like the Beatles and did this song:

and the precursor of Robocop, Space Sheriff Gavan:

I finished the first season of Doctor Who over the weekend and I am sad...I love the ninth doctor and I don't want him to change!! I want #9 back!! It should stay #9and Rose for at least a little longer, please!!! Even though I know it changes a lot, but still...I'm in mourning...even though its technically still the same person, with a different face.

Oh you poor soul. I haven't watched Sherlock, but I know what happens thanks to iFunny.

Also, has anybody been watching AMC's Halt and Catch Fire? I started watching last week and I got hooked. There are so many huge shockers to me in the show already. I know its towards the end of the first season so I really should go back and watch all of it, but I'm just lazy right now.

Can you imagine my rage when I found out the the Classic Doctor Who episodes on Netflix are only select samplings of the series? I am super sad now. And to make it worse I was doing some research and learned there are a ton if episodes that I will never get to see because of BBC's old storage policy. I must scour the internet now to watch Classic Who.

Yup, the lost episodes are permanently lost. It's a shame but it's almost like a mystery. I torrented all the Classic stuff, but if that's not feasible you can get the serials on DVD as well.

Although a lot of them have been recovered from outside sources that bought copies or taped them. So I'm going to look for them online and probably ask for Classic Who DVDs for Christmas, my birthday, etc.
