Mano Erina - FRIENDS (1st Album)

Post by EmEl »

The album of the year is out! ( What?) It's Mano's first album, and they even let her strike a fancy little pose on the cover this time. If you hate Mano, this album will not change your opinion (especially since over half the album is old stuff). She remains my special 70s idol in the 00s.

The first new song is "Osozaki Musume" and its beginning sounds like it's a cool little opening of some anime or something. The synth is awesome and I like how it's sung. The fourth track "Itsumo Itsudemo" is an okay ballad that perhaps will grow on me (I am already starting to like the instrumentation). It's only made worse by the placement of "LaLaLa-SoSoSo" directly after it as the fifth track. This third indies single probably should not have been on the album, and certainly should not have been untouched. The album version of "Manopiano" is better because of how much better Mano is, but "LaLaLa-SoSoSo" unchanged stands out far too much. They should've put the Kitty song on instead.

Track 7 is "Lucky Aura" and that's why this is the album of the year. It's exactly the same as it was a year ago, and that's how it should be. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/wub.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> And that's the only song I need. "Santa no Saxophone" follows next, backed by an awesome horn section. And I therefore love the song. Mano & Brass = Paradise.

I guess some people might have already heard "Matsuge no Saki ni Kimi ga Iru" since I think it was performed in her concert which is coming out on DVD soon.

I'm guessing from the track list that one of those titles is "Hajimete no Keiken," the other must-have song after "Lucky Aura."

This is the album I've been waiting for. It's about time.

Is this a new concert coming out on DVD?

01. Image -
Risa expresses the thoughtfulness and dreamy quality of this track well.

02. Image -
If you notice, Risa tongue is just sticking out by a tad, her teeth are gleaming white - exactly what I picture an Oozaki Musume to be. She captures the playfulness and graceful nature of this song.

03. Image -
Here Risa's playful expression and tilting hand represent the childlike wonder and innocence I felt when listening to this song. It has the same feel as YMCA, something you can't help but make stupid hand gestures while saying PATI PATI. You even want to sing along, which is what she is doing. Perfect representation of my feelings for this song.

04.Image - The pursed lips representing holding back laughter, holding back joy, holding back true emotions. Mano has gave us a restrained song, the only clue is within the contained "La la la" which she belts out her sorrow to the world. Haunting and beautiful, like a princess trapped in a tower. Itsumo Itsudemo....so poignant and meaningful.

05. Image -
Here Risa's delicate fingers represent Mano's delicate handling of the piano. The smirk reveals her mischievous nature and the hidden layer to the music. It is a side of Mano we have not seen before, one that she exposes oh so rarely. It contrasts the previous track by releasing emotions but she still holds back for personal reasons I'm sure. But all this buildup must have release somewhere.

06. Image -
Here we have Risa expressing the determination of the song with the raised fist and and pursed lips. Koi, Koi, Koi, she chants, pumping her fist in the air. It makes me want to cheer for the girl, hoping she achieves the love she so desires. The piano bits are very nice, a brief expression of hopeful schoolgirl, ah, so nostalgic and beautiful.

07.
Image - Here we have a microphone nearest the most private of places. This represents the Lucky Aura, the urgent pressing feeling expressed in the song, the microphone having a phallus shape and the private place being so private. Dokidokidokiluckyluckylucky. I can only hope that I can capture the intimate excitement expressed by Mano in this song in my own life.

08. Image -
Here we have Risa making her "O" face, which is the natural progression from the last song. Mano has done a brilliant job of capturing the elicit expressions of ecstasy. It is here that the buildup of the last four songs have had their eventual release, the highest point of this album.

09. Image - After such an uplifting release, only a smile could capture the elation. The secret hilt to her eyes and smile is that of a new confident woman, having experienced the greatest pleasure known thus far in her life. While the song is refined and typical restrained Mano, the brief glimpses of power make me realize that she is a woman behind a mask, and only the briefest glimpses of herself are shown in song. This picture represents the Mano under the mask, the Mano that she tries to hide. Only the longing in her voice reveals the woman underneath.

10. Image -
This picture represents the fun of this song. A simple girl having simple fun.

11. Image
- While I am sure that Oyasumi does not invoke a smile and a measure of penis size, Risa's yellow teeth can only show the foils of forgetting to brush teeth before sleeping. Despite this, this song retains a positive outlook on life, positive uplifting vocals, dreamy recollections of the day only a song this happy could convey. Sure, she forgot to brush her teeth. But something new will come out of the new day. Oyasumi nasai.

12. Image -
While Risa is holding her nose and snorting some indescriptant substance, I must implore a comparison to Manopiano. The refined piano points are something only an illicit substance could release.

Overall -

Image -
This picture captures the essence of the album. A smile, the pointed finger of "Shh" or "Secret", the glint of mischievousness in her eyes....It summons the growth of a girl into a woman, the growth that a first love can bring. I hope the followup continues the maturation of a woman, with the inevitable breakup releasing true emotions Mano has been restraining throughout this entire album.

Well, I love her and the combo of Erina Mano's songs and The Many Faces of Risa is unbeatable. Easily the best H!P duo since W.

Hey now, "hate" is a strong word. Let's just say... she's my least favorite by a large margin. Putting her in this thread can't shake my Mano-love. It only makes me like Risa a bit more! (Until perhaps I see her obnoxiously attempting to lead the crowd in a concert again.)

But, petit, your actual words make the album sound like some sort of psychological jump into the depths of womanhood. Now I don't think I can ever fully relate to the album. But I do shudder to think how "expressions of ecstasy" and "'O' face" relate to a song about Santa's... "saxophone".

Now, time to go tell myself that "Lucky Aura" can still be an innocent song in my mind!

WHAT. WHAT. After I converted to Mano Eri fandom for you sort of?? You'd better learn to appreciate my favorite people that you find to be least favorable by a large margin in return.

I haven't actually listened to this album yet and have nothing productive to say. I'll uh... return with that later. >.>

Re: Mano Erina - FRIENDS (1st Album)

Post by AEUGNewtype »

Strangely enough, this album, along with her most recent single and the DVD that came with this album kinda pushed me over the edge into calling myself an Erina fan. Through her first couple singles and generally the whole "indies" period, I wasn't terribly fond of her, but wasn't ignorant to the point where I wouldn't listen to her new stuff as it came out, it just never really caught very well with me and her personality was always super-annoying. When Love+Peace came out, I started to fall in love. The video had everything you could want on the cuteness scale, the song is absolutely awesome, and it showed a much more toned-down side of her idol personality (visually.) Having S/mileage and 8-bit clouds makes it about 10 times better as well, and then I found out she's been doing concerts and events with S/mileage for a while too, so things just keep getting better. With Love+Peace being her first single that really broke her mold for me, it really seems like they've nailed down all the facets they needed to make her a real gem and its nice to have another unique solo artist in the H!P family now.

The DVD that came with this album has the history of her "career" so far, from when she was an H!P egg all the way until November of this year, and its a really good compilation that shows a lot of behind-the-scenes and rarely seen stuff that shows a lot of her true personality, not the insalely robotic idol personality she'd put on most of the time. It served as a nice re-introduction to who she is and what talents she really has, and I think it helped me enjoy this album. The album is almost like a retrospective of everything she's done up until now, and though I had heard all of her previous singles, they never really stuck, whether it was just because most of the PVs were just so strange and unfitting for the music or there was something else going on, now I really see the appeal that EmEl was talking about earlier this year when we met at AX and how she harkens back to the 70s and early 80s idols that we love, but also puts a new element of playing the piano into the mix. This helps a lot because in each song, whether you notice it or not, the piano is one of the main driving forces of the music, and having Taisei behind a lot of the producing surely helped with this as well, but the final product, when you listen to it thoroughly, really stands out. Only a few of the songs near the end of this album really get to the point where you want to go to sleep, the first 3/4 of it are extremely good and a very diverse group of songs.

Anyway, as for particular comments about the album:

Otome no Inori really stands out to me now as just being one of those classic-sounding piano driven idol songs with a really somber and calm sound and would normally seem like a weird album-opener, but it fits for the kind of artist she is. Its better without the PV.

Osozaki Musume is awesome and fairly upbeat, but really sounds like a classic early 80s idol song. I dig.

Sekai wa Summer Party is a song I never really liked a huge amount (probably because of the PV,) but when I listen to it now within the context of knowing a lot more about her and what kind of artist she is, it really fits and I like it a lot. It became one of my 3 favorite songs from her, period, after listening to it more.

Itsumo Itsumademo is an absolutely gorgeous ballad in a classic idol style. Kinda folk song-y, in the best way possible. Not much else to say besides the songwriting and arrangement are both beautiful.

I was never too familiar with LALALA SOSOSO, but after listening to it more thoroughly here, I fell in love with it, especially the verse It is one of the most unique songs among most of her catalog, it doesn't fit the classic idol mold as much as most of her other songs, but its still a really good song in its own right.

Hajimete no Keiken was the first song by her that I actually loved the first time I heard it and saw the PV. It still holds up even moreso today.

I'm not a huge fan of Lucky Aura, but its a pretty good song. The instrumentation is just a little strange and the song is a bit much on the repetitive side, but again, its still an enjoyable song, just not one of my favorites.

Santa no Saxophone is just a silly ska song, and I'm usually absolutely head over heels for ska songs, but this one is just pretty good. Its enjoyable but not OMFGTHISISAWESOME good.

Kono Mune no is just a very slow ballad type song. Not a lot to say about it. I can listen to it, but I have to be in the right mood for something that slow.

Matsuge no Saki is an awesome, cutesy classic idol type song, I could listen to it anytime.

Oyasumi Nasai is basically a slow jazz/lounge type song mixed with idol style, a good almost-closing song for an album, kinda gets you into the mood to wind down.

Mano Piano is a pretty sweet song, its very simple, very slow, and the re-recorded vocals here actually make the song listenable, where the previously recorded version kinda wasn't.

And aside from the album, her latest single, LOVE & PEACE = PARADISE is absolutely awesome, that meaning the A-side and B-side as well, they're both top notch songs in all areas.

All of these things have come together now to make me what I'd call an official Mano fan. And again, its great to have a new H!P idol to follow, as long as they keep up the good work.

My copy of the album, the limited edition with the DVD, finally arrived on Saturday, some 3 weeks after I ordered it. I skimmed through the chapters of the 53-minute "History" DVD. There is some performance footage, but it's mostly Erina talking, talking, talking...

Anyway, I enjoy the album, but I can't help thinking how much better these songs would be if Koharu had sung them. These are exactly the kinds of songs I wanted to hear on Koharu's albums, not the silly anime songs they saddled her with.

Erina is a pleasant enough entertainer, and she's got that piano-playing gimmick down pat, but she's downright bland next to Koharu. She's safe and predictable. One, I like Koharu's voice better and two, Koharu has that manic quality that these songs needed. She's so much more interesting than Mano.

How come nobody in Hello! Project ever has the career I want them to have?

While I appreciate the sentiment that you have with H!P sometimes, I have to break it to you. Koharu is gone. She's not coming back. (Hopefully.) This album would not have benefited in any way from her, as you say, manic quality. Mano has an aura of quiet and almost intensely pervasive cuteness, that many before me have said brings back an old idol quality. I am surprised you don't see it either. (Or can't appreciate it.)

And the fact that Mano's singing has improved so much in such a short amount of time while Koharu almost always was simply Koharu in every thing she sang for years, means a lot.

In other words, you're crazy man.

I'm pretty inclined to agree with this, except I liked Koharu a lot and she had just as interesting of a career and "personality" as Mano does, it was just on the exact opposite side of the idol spectrum, where Koharu was hyper, modern, and quirky, Mano is, just as you said, safe, predictable, and calm just like the idols of yesteryear. Therefore these types of songs not only wouldn't have fit the style of Koharus personality, but her voice wouldve also been a complete mismatch. I love my old-school idols, so Mano definitely has me won on that angle after experiencing more of her material, but they also aren't afraid to make her a little more on the modern side when the need to, like her newest single. I won't particularly say that one is better than the other, both girls just have a different calling in the world of idols. Let's hope Manos career last as long or longer than Koharu's and continues to diversify her even more.

Points well taken. Maybe I went a little overboard in suggesting "how much better these songs would be if Koharu had sung them." That's really kind of insupportable. I should have phrased it this way:

"Imagine how these songs would have sounded if Koharu had sung them. Would they be better? I don't know. Maybe not. But I'd love to hear Koharu tackle them."

If, in some alternate universe, the opportunity to compare would be afforded me...it's always possible I'd concede that Mano was better.

But the fact remains that Koharu did fine work on the quieter songs on her first album and I wish she'd been given the opportunity to do more.

But I do appreciate Mano. I gave her debut concert a favorable review on CDJapan and I intend to do the same with this album. Sometimes I'm in the mood for the calming dulcet tones of Mano and her magic piano. At other times, I want that extra little tremor that Koharu brings to the show. Which was the case when I re-listened to the Mano album this morning. All depends on my mental state at the time.

P.S. on re-listening, I can see where there are clearly some songs you'd want to keep Koharu away from. I've now moved on to Yuki Maeda's new album, which came in the package with the Mano album. Nice.

I watched the "History" DVD in its entirety and my above characterization of it was not a fair one. There's a lot of good footage throughout the DVD. She never talks for that long. The first section, "History 1" has a lot of wonderful Ongaku Gatas footage. Later sections (there are 4 in all) tend to give short shrift to anybody who isn't Erina. E.g. S/mileage.

I do a whole Erina vs. Koharu comparison in my latest blog entry.
