2010 Prediction Thread

Post by aisasami »

We have an H!P prediction and all that jazz in the other section of the forum. But, shouldn't we have a Jpop review/prediction thread in general? These past two weeks or so, I have been reflecting back on the who, what, and where in Jpopland this past decade (especially after watching the CDTV special on New Years) and how it would it changed or evolved in the next decade.

What was the most influential factor in the 2000s? There is so many to choose from Hamasaki Ayumi to Korean acts making it big in Japan and even an American making Enka popular for the youth of Japan (and the scandals that went on with Suzuki Ami, Komuro Tetsuya, and even Abe Natsumi). For me, it was the idol groups, especially with avex and Akimoto Yasushi. Yes, I love Morning Musume. and their sister groups with their huge influential over Jpop and the market in the early 2000s. But, I always had a spot in my heart for avex idols because they were pretty unique (and the early 2000 groups incorporated that popular "eurobeat" sound into their music). But also, they helped to re-brand avex (along with Koda Kumi, Hamasaki Ayumi, and others) to be a renewed label without the help of Komuro Tetsuya (who "made" avex in the 90s). In terms of idol music/groups, I think this was the decade of the return of Akimoto Yasushi as the true king of the idol music scene. After Onyanko Club (and their subgroups/soloists) in the 80s and the semi-disastrous effort of Checkicco in 90s, I think AKB48 made it big for Akimoto in the 2000s with help from a well known 80s idols music composer and arranger Inoue Yoshimasa. And for the scandals, I always wonder what would happen if Suzuki Ami wasn't blacklisted? Her music since joining avex is ok but I kinda miss the old Ami (but never can come back).

There have been ups and downs in the Jpop music world this decade. There has also been many big changes in the Jpop scene from the rise of the R&B (that started in the 90s) to eurobeat sounded music to electronica sounding music. I don't care what the 2010s give me, just me some good electronic music and I be good. (And that Hamasaki Ayumi would stick to good music but that wouldn't happen. Or, Koda Kumi stick with that rock sound from that duet single with her sister). I also think that television show musical groups will be the "thing" of the new decade (we have seen it already with the Hexagon family).

But, before I ramble on anymore, what do you think of the past decade? Anything unique, odd, heart-melting happened? And, what do you think will happen in the new decade? Will Hamasaki Ayumi quit music because went 100% deaf? Will there be a scandal among AKB48? Predict!

P.S.: Because I sound like a nerd in this post, the fact of the day is that today marks the 10th anniversary of dream with the (official) release of their first single, Movin' on. Now do you feel so old?

lmfao I don't even think she'll quit then. Our ears may suffer, but her sales probably will not!

Ayu's sales are in the GUTTER btw. I think Japan's finally realize how much she suuuuuuucks now. Compare these two videos:

It's sad and I really hope she does retire this year before smearing her image completely. She used to be amazing, and now she's downright horrible. It sucks that she's going deaf, but she's a singer. A deaf person shouldn't be singing. She probably has enough money to live comfortably for the rest of her life, and can still do TV appearances and such, I guess.

I don't really have anything to say other than that, though. :< Sorry, my mind draws a blank for this stuff, even after seeing all the stuff aisasami wrote.

She isn't beating any boy bands in sales, but she's still grabbing #1 spots. I do agree about her singing though. Her singing style now is perfectly summed up in the recent Dearest video you linked. It's just shout-singing, with off-pitch notes everywhere. Granted, for the concert live, that was at the end of that night, but it's still a good representative of her. If she wasn't swimming in #1's and didn't have a track record like a beast, she'd be out flat on her ass again (not that she couldn't start her own friggin label with all of her money). Still, she does have some really interesting creative roles in her works and I'd like to see her work as a producer or composer for someone fresher.

-obligatory Beethoven reference here- Not like Beethoven sang any of his works, though. Which is why she should be producing.

She's grabbing #1 spots, but her sales are really not what they used to be. Her highest selling single this year was #26 on the yearly charts. 8 or so years ago she'd be duking it out with Utada for #1.

But yes, I agree, she should stop singing and do behind the scene stuff.

I wholeheartedly agree. Utada's in the same boat, but with less releases. I guess they're both just fizzling out.

That is very, very trippy. Especially because I still think of Dream as such a modern group. One of my favorites of this past decade, speaking of which. But then again, meh, there are things that make me feel older. I remember buying Moritaka Chisato's debut single when it first came out. Not on CD, it was a 45 vinyl. That was around 24 years ago. About that same year, I also remember getting the first commercially-released compact disc album. It was Springsteen's "Born In the USA." And yet again within that same year or so, I went to see the Transformers Movie in theaters. Based on the television show that I'd been watching since 1984.

But then when I listen to some of my relatives talk, it makes me feel young again.

They did things like see The Beatles play live, and vote for Franklin D. Roosevelt. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

additional info from me, i think J-urban is gonna raise up..

many of new release in japan music came from j-urban, like May-J, MAY's, also the queen of hip-hop Namie Amuro (can u imagine that first audition of 1st-gen moumusu sang one of Namie Amuro's song "never end")

i also appreciate some pop-rock-ish song like YUI which accpeted by japanese listener.

well, i think it's time to moumusu and other H!P project to show their potential.
