^That's awesome, aine.

I heard this song when I took my cousin to a Chinese restaurant to teach her how to eat with chopsticks, and really liked it, and could understand it enough that I could actually search for/find it. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /weeeh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':weeeh:' />

Sorry NekoKai by singling you out because tons of people do it. But please quote so people don't need to go to the previous page. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

She's referring to aine's post below:

OMG GEM ACTUALLY USED MY REMIX!!1!one <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... prised.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':omg:' />

Well, not her, but the crew covering her live in Vancouver... BUT, she mentioned it on her fb:

這是最後一個在溫哥華的訪問視頻要分享給你們!這個有點特別,因為它的背景音樂用的是我們"Good to be Bad" Remix比賽的其中一個作品哦:Good To Be Bad (distant city mix) by stnm

This is the closest to stardom that I'll ever be. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... R#>/8o.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='8o' />

It only took me a year to notice... <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' /> Actually I only found it by total accident. We finally received our Limited Edition copy of eXposed today (I'll spam photos here soon because it's amazing) and started poking on yt searching for videos of GEM's overseas concerts, thinking how nice it would be if she performed in Europe, and that came up. A few seconds into the video we're like, hold on, that sounds familiar.

Berry thinks I'm not happy because I'm not jumping with joy about it getting recognition, but I'm just at too much of a loss of words. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' />

My original remix thread is here btw.

Oh and another awesome thing, Cpop thread has reached 3 pages with probably half of it being my posts. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nceman.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':danceman:' />

I think the main problem with Cpop is the lack of ease getting music like Kpop and Jpop? Maybe I haven't been looking in the right places <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I agree. The pitiful state of this thread is a reminder to me to actively seek out the good stuff. And to be honest, I can't find a whole lot. There's loads of bored-to-tears ballads which Chinese people love. Problem with Cpop is there just so many Chinese people they don't need to make much effort to market outside of that market, but that also alienates people like me who have crappy Chinese. And Kpop is built to be international. Jpop, I don't know..I'll just pin it on anime. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

BTW, it looks like Jolin filled Wembley (90,000 capacity!). I didn't hear it was sold out, but I'd say it looked at least 80% filled. Here she performs The Great Artist. Oh and she actually brought a live band though they didn't play for that song. Anyways, I hope this means more overseas concerts from her.

That's true, C-pop just isn't cool the way J-pop is in the West, and it lacks the promo vehicle that anime is. Because still, for the majority of western fans, anime is the gateway into the more widely perceived Japanese pop-culture.

This is well illustrated by my failure to notice that my GEM remix was used (see my previous post). Even though GEM is probably the most accessible and westernized C-pop star (thanks to her European producer), the language barrier is there, and I just can't be bothered to follow her blog or facebook when I can't read the damn thing.

The anime subbing community didn't appear overnight, but "C-pop artists' blog and facebook subbing community" just doesn't have the same vibe to it, and really, the subject matter is much less attractive than colourful cartoons full of gravity-defying tits. So, I'm not holding too much hope for an explosion of C-pop popularity in the nearest future. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/nono.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':nono:' />

SPEAKING OF GEM, we just discovered this little gem <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... R#>/8o.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='8o' /> of a song:

Bubble

This is from her last album and it went under the radar when we listened to it. But the MV for it is magical and really gives the song so much more depth. It's really beautiful and subtle.

I'm a sucker for long shots, and this is a one shot MV. Apparently, it took them 200 takes to get this one right. Doing a one shot in which soap bubbles play a vital role sounds like hell of a task, but the effect is really stunning.

I know I promised to spam photos of the Xposed box set; I'll get to it next week when I'm back home.

But then it's not like anyone cares about this thread anyway. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/geof.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':geof:' /> <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/hmph.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hmph:' />

The box is HUGE. Even a bit too huge to my taste, I could have done with half of the solid 2+ inches of thickness. But it does look nice and intimidating on the shelf. It has a nice canvas texture to it, and I hope you like the colours black, red and white, because that's about the only colours that you will see in it.

Image

The cover is held by a magnet, and after opening the content is covered by a see-through red paper. Removing that reveals the lyrics booklet/photobook, complete with a strip of ribbon to help lift it. Nice attention to little details like that.

Image

Under the photobook you find... a lot of foam. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' /> In it, the album CD itself (red), the bonus DVD, a chain with a pendant (metal tab with "Xposed" engraved, a bullet whatever thingy, and a black feather), and a small black flashlight with "G.E.M" and "Xposed" printed on it. It will prove useful soon.

Image

The photobook contains a lot of cool and highly stylized session photos, single page and full spreads, some smaller photos from the MV shooting, as well as the song lyrics, credits, etc. The highlights of this season are skimpy black clothes and chains. Lots of chains.

Image

Image

Image

Now for the cool part. Remember the small flashlight? After unscrewing the front and removing a small plastic tab that prevents it from discharging you find out that it's actually a blacklight flashlight. Now when you remember from the description that the photobook was supposed to contain secret messages it all starts to make sense.

Image

Image

It's been a while since I had this much fun with a special edition of anything. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> There are hidden messages in about third of the pages, so it'll take you a while to find them all. And the album itself kicks ass too, check strawberry's post for some recommendations.

Baidu's music page has the newest albums (though you have to be in China to listen to them) and MVs (which you can view in any country), but it's a good way to find new artists. The first album listed is LinLin's, but the second one is Penny Tai's 11th album. You can find them all on youtube, but they're mostly ballad-like songs, so be warned strawberry. However, I did find this MV/song. It's kind of fun and a tad american-ish. She reminds me of Beyoncé, though admittedly I haven't really listened to any of her solo work. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... stling.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':whistling:' />

Edit: Here's that song in HD on youtube.

It's not that great. :hahaha: Just a ballady ballad. And a live MV is a cheap cop-out... But I'm happy there's some substantial new release from G.E.M. again! Can't wait for the XXX tour to be released.

My wife is from Taiwan, and in 1999 we went to Taiwan for our wedding reception.  A couple days before the reception, my wife and I went on a little reunion with a few of her friends.   After dinner we headed to K-TV for karaoke.  Her friends asked me what kind of music I liked, they wanted to find some Taiwanese artists that matched my tastes.  My wife explained to them the kind of music I liked and the only performer they came up with was Yuki Hsu, who really just went by the name of Yuki.  They were right on the money.  After I told them that I thought she was great, one of my wife's friends laughed and said, "You have the same musical tastes as all the 5-year-old girls in Taiwan."  They all then laughed at me.  I can't help it, I like up-tempo high energy songs.  I get the impression that up-tempo dance music in Taiwan is regarded as music for little kids.

In Taiwan they do not take up-beat dance music seriously.  They all appear to like slow-moving love ballads.  I think that is why Jolin Tsai was so successful and Yuki wasn't, they both hit the music scene at the same time.  I have tried to find other Mando-pop artists that I liked, but I haven't been successful.  I do not want to bother with Cantonese artists because we do not speak Cantonese at home, and I think it is pretty much the same in HK as well.

I really want to find some Mando-pop artists that I like as much as Yuki, but so far I had no luck.  After a 2006 trip to Japan, I turned to J-Pop and while I wasn't bowled over by anything at first, at least there is a much more richer variety of music to choose from in the Japanese market probably because of their once superior economy.  Perhaps as mainland China evolves into a superpower, there will be some great new artists coming out of there, but my guess it is just going to be a lot more love ballads.

Well, since you decided to post here, I'll bite.

I used to do my best to maintain this thread by posting stuff I found from non-ballady artists. So if you feel like going back through the thread, you can. :hahaha: I disagree with you in that non-ballady music is for kids though. But I agree in not understanding the love for ballads.

Anyways, here's some stuff I recommend.

I really recommend G.E.M. even if she primarily functions in Cantonese market. As with all Cantonese singers, they have Mandarin versions of the big hits and nowadays half their albums are in Mandarin. Her early songs were like Michelle Branch - Where did you go? Other songs I recommend Good to Be Bad (Great live..), AINY (I fully admit it's a ballad, but it's at least a power ballad and it's my favorite song of her's.), One Button. A lot of her songs are written/co-written by her.. AINY is one of them. Regardless if you like G.E.M., I think she does go against the grain and she is very well produced and talented. Sorry, it ended up being that half the songs I posted by her are Cantonese... but still.

If you're just into the idol-y peppy stuff... I like Yao Yao. Her album's lead single Honey was a cover from KARA. But I highly recommend the whole album (there are some ballads as with all Chinese albums). I actually like her version of Honey more than the original too. Another song from the album Hao Jie Mei. She also released this song last year, Ai de gou bai. I think she's a much better version of Rainie in terms of production.

Cute girl rock band Cherry Boom. I like this song called I Wanna Rock. They have lots of other good songs too.

Vivian Hsu is also great. Someone on this forum recommended her album called 'The Secret to Happiness' which i really like. I think this is one of the lead singles - Jue Ding Ai Ni. She was also active in the Japanese market too and is really good friends with Yasuda Kei.

I didn't recommend anything from mainstream artists Westerners would typically know like Rainie, Jolin, S.H.E., etc... since I'm assuming you know them. But they also have plenty of good non-ballad songs too.

G.E.M. releases a new song called Occasionally/Ngau Ji but it is Yet Another Chinese Ballad. Music and lyrics are by her (which makes it a goodie! :weeeh:)

The first half of the video is of her performing the song and the second half is a mini interview.

She talks about her love for piano. She started her first piano class when she was 4 years old and she wasn't like other kids that went outside to play or watch TV, she played the piano instead. Her first song she composed was Sleeping Beauty (one of my favorites.. a ballad though) at 13 years of age. Before she used to just randomly play stuff and had no will to will write songs. It wasn't until she really started thinking about music seriously did she really put effort into writing songs. Growing up, her idol was Alicia Keys. Seeing her play piano made her feel like she could completely understand her and like she was her friend. In her own last concert, there was one song GEM really put a lot of effort into.. and she feels it's very "her". If it weren't for piano, she probably wouldn't have been into music or singing. She would probably just be in school. With piano, she never feels very scared, but feels complete instead.
That is my bad, incomplete translation. Other highlights in the video.. GEM sings some English songs and there's cute kid pictures.

I really hate ballads, I really do, but she ALWAYS presents them so well.. I don't know what this song is about, but I feel all emotional about it.

Also, this is part 1 of a series. So there'll be more!

And here's a link to Sleeping Beauty. I actually found out she also sang an English version. Her English is almost perfect.. but hearing the song in a different language doesn't sound right. :hahaha: Not to mention her grammar isn't 100% correct. :hahaha:

Thanks for listening! I was still editing my bad translation. :hahaha:

Quoted from WIkipedia
<blockquote class="ipsBlockquote">G.E.M’s accent[27] can lead her to being mistaken for a foreign singer. Her accent[14] is caused by the shrinkage of her left jawbone, therefore, the upper and lower teeth do not close up completely, leaving a gap in between. When G.E.M speaks, air leaks through the gap. There are surgery operations to correct this problem, but doctors suggested she not undergo the surgery until she turned 21 when her body was fully developed. However, G.E.M has already announced that she has temporarily opted against the surgery because of its high risks, and the problem has not deteriorated in recent years.[28]</blockquote>

Maybe you're referring to that? I don't know.. But her voice isn't typical Cpop.
I'm really glad you like the songs! :weeeh:

YAY ANOTHER GEM BELIEVER!
Here's an acoustic version of AINY. Proof that GEM does know how to rock out on a piano. It doesn't pick up until the end though, OK?!
So I hope part 2 & 3 of this Live Piano Sessions by her will be more interesting and not so ballady :hahaha:

I came across this Kym song.  It's not really a ballad, but it's not super upbeat either.  The chorus is really cute though.

Do you (strawberryjam, since it's pretty much just the two of us) consider this to be a balladAnd this one?  The second one is more ballad-y, at least power ballad-y.  I know you don't care for ballads, but most everything I find is at least part ballad, so I'm trying to figure out what aspect of ballads you don't like.  This song is upbeat, and the video is funny (to me at least, I don't think it's meant to be, though).

I ran across this song the other day.  You know how Disney stars would do updated covers of Disney songs?  Kym did that with Part of Your World.

Angela Zhang's year old song Lin Yu Yizhi Zou is actually happy and not a ballad.  I'd say it's mature pop music.

I saw Anita Mui star in many Jackie Chan movies.  I never heard any of her music.  It saddens me to learn how she passed with cervical cancer.  I see her last stage performance as a heroic act.  She had to have known her fate before the concert, yet performed in spite of it.

December 30 will mark the tenth anniversary of her death. I have a number of her CDs that I bought in Chinatown stores in NYC and a couple of her concerts as well. She also occasionally sang the theme songs to her movies, most notably THE HEROIC TRIO. She was one of the great Hong Kong performers and I miss her terribly.

Trying to find a quintessential Anita Mui picture is quite difficult, so I settled on this one:

Angela Zhang has a new album out (it's self-titled).  All of the links are Youtube, and unless otherwise stated they're the MV from her official channel.  All of those have English subtitles under the Chinese ones, but if they're too small they also have them in the description.  The first two videos have a connecting storyline.

OK Bèng Not a ballad
Wèi Ài Ér Huó (has a strong beat and might be a power ballad)
Wǒ De Yǎnlèi (the only instrument is a piano)
Yángguāng Kōngqì (upbeat chorus)
Ài Méiyǒu Cuò (rock-ish chorus)
Ài Lǚxíng De Rén (just music) Scroll down for the English translation.
Ài Cíchǎng (just music) Not a ballad Scroll down farther for the English translation.
Tǎohǎo
Cì Qíng (darker)
Huó Zài Cǐkè (just music) Not a ballad Also scroll down farther for the English translation.
Never Forget You (just music) (a bit of a power ballad) This song is fully in English.

Overall it's a good album, and better than Di Wu Ji, but I also love ballads, so... :whistling:  I think Yángguāng Kōngqì and Ài Lǚxíng De Rén are the only ones I'm not rushing to play again.  The latter is just a generic ballad, and the former is too happy for my tastes.  Which is ironic considering I'm posting this on a board about girlie J-Pop idols, but I seem to have that problem with her "happy" music a lot.  Don't get me wrong, not all of these songs are sad, but there's just a certain je ne sais quoi about some of her happy songs.  I mean there's songs like Zài Kuàilè Yīdiǎn, I like it and it's in my head a lot, but yet it still annoys me.  But alas, I digress.

The last two songs might be my favorite, but I definitely recommend listening to them all at least once.  If you're into music videos, I would suggest taking a looksie at them, too.

Here are some songs I ran across:

G.E.M. Heifun Nei (It's Cantonese); Paomo  Both songs are in the top ten of the hottest songs, and the first one is second place in the top new songs.
S.H.E Bu Shuo Zaijian
Mr. Haaksik Kongmai (Also Cantonese); Wake Up  Mr. is a rock band, so neither of these are ballads.  The second one is from the album they released in March.

Jolin Tsai will be releasing a new album on November 15. The music video for the title track premiered today.

It's very much an edm/trap track. The hipster battle is hilarious.
