Lady Gaga is out of her fucking mind

Post by Special Needs Tricycle »

I know this is old. I'm stuck in the J-Pop shell and this little music video for a deep, heart-touching song called "Telephone" happened to slip through the fence.

Holy shit you guys. This video.

If you thought that one Country Musume video with the Engrish was odd, or Onegai Miwaku no Target's PV was bizarre, you need to watch this video.

I won't give too much away about the video, because it will ruin the mystique, but I will give you the lyrics beforehand. Read the lyrics, interpret them, imagine what the video is going to be like, and then watch it:

Hello, hello, baby

You called, I can't hear a thing.

I have got no service

in the club, you say, say

Wha-Wha-What did you say, huh?

You're breaking up on me

Sorry, I cannot hear you,

I'm kinda busy.

K-kinda busy

K-kinda busy

Sorry, I cannot hear you, I'm kinda busy.

Just a second,

It's my favorite song they're gonna play

And I cannot text you with

A drink in my hand, eh?

You shoulda made some plans with me,

You knew that I was free.

And now you won't stop calling me;

I'm kinda busy.

Stop callin', stop callin',

I don't wanna think anymore!

I left my head and my heart on the dance floor.

Stop callin'', stop callin,

I don't wanna talk anymore!

I left my head and my heart on the dance floor.

Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh

Stop telephonin' me!

Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh

I'm busy!

Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh

Stop telephonin' me!

Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh

Can call all you want,

but there's no one home,

and you're not gonna reach my telephone!

Cuz I'm out in the club,

and I'm sippin that bubb,

and you're not gonna reach my telephone!

Boy, the way you blowin' up my phone

won't make me leave no faster.

Put my coat on faster,

leave my girls no faster.

I shoulda left my phone at home,

cuz this is a disaster!

Callin' like a collector -

sorry, I cannot answer!

Not that I don't like you,

I'm just at a party.

And I am sick and tired

of my phone r-ringing.

Sometimes I feel like

I live in Grand Central Station.

Tonight I'm not takin no calls,

cause I'll be dancin.

Cause I'll be dancin

Cause I'll be dancin

Tonight I'm not takin no calls, cause I'll be dancin!

My telephone!

M-m-my telephone!

Cuz I'm out in the club,

and I'm sippin' that bubb,

and you're not gonna reach my telephone!

We're sorry the number you have reached is not in service at this time.

Please check the number, or try your call again.

---

I will give you that, and Let's Make A Sandwich! That's all you need to know.

Okay, now watch the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQ95z6ywcBY

I don't really get into Lady Gaga's music because it's not that catchy to me and the lyrics give me the heebie geebies since I can actually understand them, but THIS is something I can enjoy. I'm not even sure why. I have a feeling there's some huge meta meaning to it, but I don't want to get analytic in case it's just Lady Gaga being 100% serious and not actually trolling the living hell out of the pop music industry.

But anyway, discuss. It's a good music video and it has Queen of the Universe Beyonce in it.

And sorry for the title if it offends anyone. :> I thought it was fitting.

The best part of that video is Kill Bill's pussy wagon.

Other than that, it's the usual gaga being ugly and beyonce being hot. Not interesting.

As shes saying, "I'm kinda BSE".

Their counting is wrong, it's "Eins", not "Ein".

I also don't get why the asian girl is saying wanpiisu, though I know that means dress.

Gaga says:

"There was this really amazing quality in 'Paparazzi,' where it kind of had this pure pop music quality but at the same time it was a commentary on fame culture. In its own way, even at certain points working with Jonas [Åkerlund, the director of both videos] really achieved this high art quality in the way that it was shot. I wanted to do the same thing with this video—take a decidedly pop song, which on the surface has a quite shallow meaning, and turn it into something deeper."

She also had the support of Inglourious Basterds writer/director Quentin Tarantino, which can't be underestimated.

"There certainly is a Tarantino-inspired quality in the video," she says. "I mostly love the way he uses different forms to create something new. His direct involvement in the video came from him lending me the Pussy Wagon. We were having lunch one day in Los Angeles and I was telling him about my concept for the video and he loved it so much he said, 'You gotta use the Pussy Wagon.'"

Ultimately, Gaga says her intent was to take "the idea that America is full of young people that are inundated with information and technology and turn it into something that was more of a commentary on the kind of country that we are."

From here. Lady Gaga also linked this blog discussion of her video on Twitter. Not sure if that's an official endorsement or just her going "interesting."

A lot of people have been saying it's the most ridiculous video ever, but I liked it. If you just watch it without having read all the hype beforehand, then it I can see how it comes off super random. I had already read it was supposed to be a sequal to Paparazzi (in which Gaga kills her boyfriend, so now she's going to jail for that) and that it was Tarantino inspired, which pretty much explained the tone, the themes, and the weird dialogue for me.

Yay, Gaga love thread! She is so fucking kickass. This video was funny and awesome. Those outfits and hair! Beyonce looked amazingly hot. Gaga's slender frame cannot compare to Beyonce's fabulous hourglass. If she keeps the storyline going, I'm suspecting the next single will be Alejandro, which was my second favorite song off the fame monster. The song is catchy and fun in that stupid dance pop sort of way. It's way better than Videophone and I don't mind the effects in the song like I usually do in other songs.

My favorite part was the poison scene. The only thing that disappointed me was how the song took a backseat to the video, but I'm glad she's trying to bring back the MJ epic videos that aren't like the horrific failures of Sisquo ... Sisco? Sisqo? that one dude from Dru Hill... or Puff Daddy...P Diddy...Sean...whatever he's calling himself now. I don't understand why it's banned. I see more assntitties in the rapstarflavorofthemonth's pv than I do in this and it's not like the poison scene was graphic. Her dancing skills aren't really up to par, they should've shown off Beyonce's moves more.

I think she's trolling the industry, which is part of why I like her so much. Her live performances are great because she messes with the arrangements and style of singing. If you look up her stuff under Stefani Germanotta it's more akin to what she does live...or just look up a live Gaga performance. :| It gives me hope she'll be around longer than the Gaga fad, or maybe construct an alter ego or somesuch to give her more longevity.

I didn't get into Lady Gaga for a while because her earlier songs sort of got on my nerves. But then, Paparazzi amazed me and then the Paparazzi PV solidified my fandom. She is amazing and clever and a creature of her own making.

I also think she's playing with the notion of celebrity again, but it wasn't as seamless as Paparazzi. Still, maybe that is the point; it has to be jarring and weird to remind you of what it isn't: a perfectly packaged and consummable little promotional video.

See, I sort of thought of it as her just making fun of all the stupid quirks of pop music. Really blatant sexuality, homosexuality, ridiculous outfits, pop culture references out the ass, convoluted lyrics that don't fit the music video in the slightest, blatant product advertisement, etc.

Back when she first started breaking out I haaaaated her because I thought she was 100% serious and deluding herself that what she is doing is an actual piece of ~*Art*~, but seeing stuff like this makes me like her, even if I don't care for most of her music. The whole video's basically sensory overload. There's not a single boring part of it. It's like a really fucked up version of Thriller. Let's make a Sandwich, man. Let's make a Sandwich. Why is that so funny to me.

I do think Paparazzi is legitimately a really, really good song, though. I don't get the interpretation of the lyrics, though. It just sounds like a song about stalking someone using fame metaphors.

Her stuff is all very hit or miss. She has a few good songs and a lot of terrible ones, as well as a LOT of terrible "fans," meaning everyone who has a YouTube account or listens to the radio every day. This is her biggest "miss" yet, this video is fucking horrendous. I had few back and forth's on my facebook about this, part of it being my idea that started it all:

How many more people could possibly post a link to the Lady Gaga "Telephone" video on their Facebook this week? The video is really ugly, visually, and really raunchy for the sake of it instead of trying to actually have a purpose. I used to like the song a bit, but this kinda made me not care so much anymore. How appropriate to have a Tarantino reference, it seems to be channeling his lack of talent and tact.

I don't have much else to say besides that this is the most fucking pointless, ugly, tactless video I've seen in quite a while, for a song that wasn't all that bad. Opposite to how a lot of Jpop videos make songs better, this makes the song a million times worse. It shoves its issues and messages in your face for the entire running time and leaves nothing for you to think about or be interested in, just an overload of "shock value," ugliness, and stupidity that she claims is "getting her artistic message out." Yeah, there's better "art" left in the toilet after I take a crap. And most of her other videos were pretty decent except like, 2 of them.

Yeah she's Warholesque - she's simultaneously mocking the trappings of the entertainment media while she gains from it.

This video, in all its grotesqueness, is a perfect representation of the big metajoke she's having with her career. Arguable, the "art" is not in the shock value of the video. Rather, the artistic message is in the way it mocks how the entertainment world feeds on shock value, ugliness, product placement, masturbatory self-reference, etc. This is also why Lady Gaga continually references monstrosity, not beauty, and exaggerates glamorous tropes until they become ridiculous.

Lady Gaga is probably one of my favorite artists of all time at this point and, like all artists, have up and down points. I have my own qualms with the Telephone video, but it's really growing on me and the song has always been one of my favorites from The Fame Monster.

@AEUG: You have nothing good to say about the video at all? Also, art is subjective and you are definitely entitled to your opinion, but you got no artistic merit from the video at all, not even in the context of a music video?

Is it wrong that I hope she DIAF's?

I hate listening to the radio because every station save for Q101 plays this same kinda shit over and over - There's no point in listening to it anymore.

I know the DIAF may be very harsh but what other way is there to stop her from releasing such shit?

I'm aware that POP music/culture is POPULAR but when you just put out some shitty crap songs to make money its not cool.

I prefer artists that put time into their careers, not ones that just voice whatever shit is given to them.

I don't even know, but does she write her own shitty music or does someone give it to her?

The fact that you're complaining about this in a MORNING MUSUME BBS is rather hilarious to me. I don't care where music comes from, so long as I like it. There's some talented people behind the scenes that can write a good hit but can't sell it themselves.

And yes, she does write her own music, as we've stated above... She crafts her image very carefully, and it's to the point where she parodies the industry at every turn. Here are some examples of her live...Paparazzi + Poker Face + Speechless + footage from preGaga at a talent show as Stefani Germanotta. She improvs a bit with the songs and makes them more interesting. Kinda reminds me of what Amanda Palmer does live...except she just plum forgets lyrics sometimes hahahaha

I hated her too until I gave her an honest chance.

People forget that she's classically trained and had years of scrapping by in NY clubs before making it big. In fact, she actually was a song writer for OTHER pop stars (like BSpears). This is a worlds away from the type of idols that are incredibly produced and delivered by, say, Tsunku and Co.

Tangent Fact: Telephone was originally written by Lady Gaga for Brittney Spears, but the song was rejected! Brittney turned around and asked for Lady Gaga to duet with her on Telephone on a greatest hits album, but Gaga refused.

Also, she's an AMAZING singer.

Listen to this: no synths, no audiotune, no pre-recording track to drown her out. This is LIVE in its purest sense. After years of lipsynching stars, I've practically forgotten that pop-acts should be able to sing haha.

Wait, same song but different venue. I think she sings better in this one:

Not really, I got some value of artistic expression but its no expression that I find interesting or attractive, just a bunch of jumbled shit with a slanderous and vengeful attitude towards celebrity and the entertainment industry, which has kinda gotten old at this point, and I don't really value an artist solely based on the fact that they express themselves, it matters about exactly what they're expressing and how they're doing it.

This is a completely different scenario, since no one in H!P really even tries to act like they're an artist who represents the talent behind their music, they know they're frontline dolls for expressing the real artists and songwriter's visions and don't try to be anything else.

Its pretty sad that she is a pretty decent singer (nowhere near AMAZING in capital letters, but good,) yet they feel the need to UTTERLY drown out 90% of her music with heavy auto-tune. Speechless is my favorite song by her, but even the studio recording of it is full of really bad-sounding auto-tune. Auto-tune can be fun as hell and an interesting thing to use in music, but only for certain kinds of music.

Erm, I feel we we're reading two totally different posts. It was clear to me that November's (predictable, knee jerk) post has nothing to do with the fact that one singer "pretends" to be an artist whereas others foreground their roles as puppets. But anyway, what counts as amazing singing?

--

(NOTE: TEXT BELOW IS NOT DIRECTED AT AEUG because he tends to get offended and think every post is directed as some personal attack )

I take issue with November's various complaints because they hinge on the attitude that it is "bad" if your music is a commercial product designed by others. The insults basically come down to that same issue:

Lady Gaga needs to die because maybe she doesn't write her own songs but sings what is given to her

Lady Gaga needs to die because she is a commercial vehicle designed to "just put out some shitty crap songs to make money"

Lady Gaga needs to die as she has no developed career but is just a seasonal platform.

None of the complaints have anything to do with the idea that Lady Gaga is "faking" talent and they all have everything to do with the fear of "produced" stardom. The irony that Petit Melon pointed out is, H!P operates under that very logic - the creation of commercial products. It makes little sense to de-legitimize these conditions for Gaga and then join a forum praising its absolute commercial apex for H!P.

Even if this is a moot point for Gaga, I want to say that this attitude is flat-out obnoxious and contradictory on a forum like this. Idols, imo, are also legitimate entertainers and not just puppets of some "master genius floating head" in the background (surely there is some gender bias in here as well). Idols perform, embody, and become the voice and face of a certain song. It is their skill that infuses a melody with personality and emotion. Sure, some idols are more...uh, iconic than others but overall, I'd say that all parts of the puzzle have to work together to produce a great song.

Or in short, sure, I have a different TYPE of admiration for Gaga than I would have for someone like Abe Nastumi. But, it doesn't mean that neither is worthy of their own fans for their own set of skills.
I don't care where music comes from, so long as I like it. There's some talented people behind the scenes that can write a good hit but can't sell it themselves.
And Melon said it so succinctly!

I'm not a huge Lady Gaga fan but I do like her music and the crazy things she does. Like Jpope said, she's the only thing interesting right now. I really do believe she's doing what she likes to do, that the music she sings, the costumes she wears, and the crazy music videos are what she enjoys. I don't think she's sold out to anyone or that she's doing it for popularity. Certainly if you're trying to be the next big thing you don't dress the way she does! Who knew people would love that crazy stuff?

So what if you don't usually hear the talent in her powerful singing or she composes weird pop songs instead of amazing compostions or her music videos are jumbled shit? It's what she wants to do and how she wants to express herself, and I don't know a better definition of artist than that. If the opera-level singer finds more pleasure in nasally bubblegum pop songs or the amazing artist has more fun drawing for a webcomic instead of perfect still-life, I find that sooo much better than doing what's regarded as more talented or respectable.

But... I really don't like critiquing things, especially music. Music isn't always serious and I don't think it's right to pick apart something so expressive and artistic. You can't compare the latest Guardians 4 song (or any usual pop music) to whatever you think "real" music is (classical music, music by "real" artists, etc). They were made by different people and for different people.

My disclaimer before anybody replies is that I do love everything. I don't think you have to though, of course~

This isn't really related to the discussion going on in the last few posts, but Lady Gaga updated her twitter today with this:

http://www.out.com/ detail.asp?id=26601 Article by my most favorite young writer in an interview with the remarkable and inspiring Heather

It's an interview with the girl Gaga makes out with in the prison scene. Kind of interesting in parts, weird in others (or rather, I'm just not a big fan of performance art).

I'm definitely in this boat as well, but I didn't particularly think of putting her in this category, but now that you mention it, I feel like an idiot for not making the connection. She's channeling the genre of performance art with her whole act including live and most of her PVs.

"This video contains content from Vevo, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds." haha

I completely agree with what you said about that person.

"UGU UGU I R SO COOL SAYIN' I BRUSH MA TEETH WITH WHISKEY"

I hate her so much, too bad many of the people actually like that one song.

Oh, actually, I was talking about the girl in the video, not Lady Gaga herself. They talk to her about what she does in her life aside...from being that chick that makes out with Lady Gaga, and she talks about a performance art piece she's doing at the moment. But now that you mention it, I can see that genre being applied to Lady Gaga as well.

Lady Gaga is fucking incredible. She is absolutely what the drab english pop music scene needed. I hope she buries Spears for good! I never want to see that little hussy's face again!

I love when people post stupid shit like this without even doing the five minutes of Google legwork it would take to answer the questions posed and disabuse the writer of wrong ideas like "Lady Gaga doesn't put time into her career and just voices whatever shit is given to her". You should have just posted "I really don't like her shit. Carry on."

I've moved from being "meh" to slowly adoring her. Like, I'm not sure if she believes what she's spouting or if she really is just trolling us all, but she is crazy and fantastic and doing weird shit just because she can.

That, and the music video just makes me laugh. It's so ridiculous in so many different ways, not to mention the fact that she's thrown conventional beauty to the wind. I may hate her eyebrows for being entirely too dark, thick, and point, but hey, if that's what floats your boat, Gaga, go for it. You weave those Diet Coke cans in your hair. You make out with your prison girlfriend. You make a telephone out of hair. You wear that strange tent and that strange leopard bodysuit and that strange... everything.

And she's not Taylor Swift (or Ke$ha). So there.
