Oricon is beginning to release its cumulative sales data for 2010. So far, it has announced the Top 50 in singles and albums, as well as the Top 5 in total sales. As predicted, the singles rankings were dominated by AKB48 and Arashi, who together held all of the Top 10 spots.

This is the first time in the ranking's history that the Top 10 has been occupied by just two artists. Before this, the record was five artists in the Top 10, which happened in 1989 with Princess Princess, Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi, Hikaru Genji, Wink, and Shizuka Kudo.

AKB48 had the top 2 singles with "Beginner" and "Heavy Rotation." They are only the third female artist to hold the top 2 singles of the year, a feat previously accomplished by Princess Princess in 1989 and Pink Lady in 1978.

Arashi, who had the top 2 singles in 2008 and the top 3 singles in 2009, settled for taking 6 of the top 10 spots this year.

I figured "Beginner" would be top, but it deserves it. That was a kick-ass single, every bit of it.

Holy shit though. Did "BREAK OUT!" really release this year? Everything feels like it's last year.

The public is so eclectic their tastes. The variety with which they consume music is stunning.

I lol'd mightily.

The albums variety is more varied, I wonder why? Does the public only buy singles?

I'd like to take a minute to remind everybody that Namie Amuro and Koda Kumi (and Utada Hikaru, but she's EMI) both beat out Ayumi Hamasaki. Granted, P<F came out at the very beginning of the 2010 charting timeline and UNIVERSE also had a BEST album, but still. HEAR THAT ZAKI? YOU ARE ON THE DECLINE

Every year I'm liking less and less of the "popular" shit. I only bothered with 3 albums on that list (Yui, aiko, and Tokyo Jihen. I like Hikki and ELT, but don't need single compilations from them), and not not even one of those singles. I know I tend towards HP and borderline indies artists, but still...

Also, that list makes it apparent that the only people in Japan buying singles are now either wota or boyband/Johnnys fangirls.

Arashi put out 6 singles and 1 album. AKB48 put out 5 singles and 1 album. In contrast, Ikimonogakari put out 3 singles and 1 album. Fukuyama Masaharu put out 1 single and 1 (best of) album. So on top of Arashi and AKB being "The Big Things" right now, they put out a crapton more singles than most other artists xD And that seems to be typical of idol groups. But in terms of albums, artists are on a more level playing field because even the most active idol group almost never puts out more than one album a year.

Hooray for SNSD to sell well ! (even with the shitty japanese versions)

Hooray for Perfume to sell more than 100k !

OK, I guess, for MM at least still being in the charts. (but not one that sold more than 50k is tough)

EDIT:

What does the third column with all the Stars mean !?

I don't know why, but I'm surprised to be in the same boat. My tally's also 3 albums (Yui, Namie, and Lady Gaga) and 1 single (Gee). I'm trying to remember if it's been higher previously, and by how much. Then again, the count does go up to 11 (Spinal Tap reference not intended) if you include the Top 200 posted by delerium.

The charts are updated weekly throughout the year, so the third column tells you how many were sold in the last week. The stars just keep the digits in a nice orderly table using text (if it's all stars that means 0 were sold in the last week).
