Otakon 2011

Post by eri »

Hmm it is fairly early for this but, is anyone thinking of going?

This will be my first trip to Otakon. I was on and off about it because we don't have a car and public transit to Baltimore seems unnecessarily confusing. However, Chemistry is set to perform! Another washed up 1990s super star group making their rounds in the US? Haha...

I'd go for an HP group, H&A or Scandal, but not for those guys. I didn't even like them when they were popular.

Eh, I might check it out. (or be up for karaoke at one of the random Korean places in Baltimore that weekend)

Since the H!P groups have really made the rounds...

and Hangry & Angry too...

I'm really hoping one of them will be announced shortly but I doubt it. I get the impression that east coast anime fans are more into American voice actor panels There is a guest thread on the Otakon boards and its so different from the AX requests.

Well, we already bought our tickets so I hope its all worth it.

I had been going to Otakon since 2001, but I stopped 2 years ago, because I just didn't really find it that enjoyable anymore, for various reasons. But what I never quite understood was the seeming reluctance of the bigger named celebrities/musicians to visit Otakon. While they've had a few recognizable names over the years, like Inoue Kikuko, TM Revolution and L'Arc-en-Ciel, the guest lists have always seemed very eclectic.

And I don't think it's because of the fans, either. It may very well just be because of location or Otakon's ability to book guests. The convention is the second largest in the country, (about ~30k, compared to AX's ~45k) and there's little reason to think the fans are different. (Yes, I keep deliberately italicizing that because I think it is ridiculous to assume that the fans are somehow different on the other side of the country, they're just as creepy on either coast.)

Hopefully you'll enjoy it though, there is always plenty to do/see. And Baltimore can be nice to check out too, if you find a lull in your schedule.

I never said fans are somehow different on the east coast -- I said that Otakon attendees (east coast anime fans) seem really into American voice actors because thats what I see in the forum requests. I thought that was odd but since you noted the event doesn't regularly draw major Japanese guests as regularly as AX, then it makes sense. There is an understanding established between an event and its fans after a few years. If the event never hosts big name Japanese guests, then fans generally start focusing elsewhere. It is kind of like how Comic Con attendees have started to expect a few big name movie stars to promote their super hero films, etc.

Also, its a shame they don't. I'm still hoping an idol group will show up. I have a feeling AX simply being "the biggest" and being in LA (which is closer to Japan and "glamorous") has more clout.

I've never been to Otakon, always wanted to go but it's just too far away for me. :<

Speaking of east coast conventions. Anime Boston, still being a fairly new player in the anime con circuit is starting to get into the AX vibe, this was the first year they had musical guests that were Japanese with Mari Iijima, girugamesh and STEREOPONY. I hope next year they continue the trend. I wish they would stop booking the convention on Easter weekend though.
