Really not at all similar to the feel of the original series or that movie, but Macross Plus is an OVA entry in the franchise later down the road (1990s), and is one of my favorite anime of all time. I still think some of Yoko Kanno's best music came from that mini-series. If you're checking out the Macross universe, I highly recommend it.

Macross Plus is a great starting point for Macross and it does have some amazing songs. But then DYRL is a fantastic movie with all the classic songs, and it has barely aged animation-wise at all. It's actually pretty jaw-dropping when you think it's from 1984 if you get to watch it in HD quality.

Of course, I would recommend everyone to watch the original TV series, but it may be a bit overwhelming for someone new to Macross and not used to animation from that period. But Valerie, if you enjoyed Do You Remember Love, you should definitely see the TV series, and Macross Plus too.

Personally, I also have a soft spot for Macross Zero, even though it wasn't as popular. But it's much more nostalgic and laid back.

Oh my gosh, I never watched Macross Plus but the SONGS. Voices is the most beautiful thing in the entire world tbh.

tfw you will never get to hear Voices and get the chills for the first time again

MACROSS: DO YOU REMEMBER LOVE? is not the easiest film to get ahold of. I have three VHS copies, one very nice copy in Japanese with no subs., one so-so quality fan-sub, and one poor-quality English dub. There was a DVD available but early reviews slammed the quality of it, so I never got it and it's now out of print. It may not have been legit. But it's an amazing film. I used sequences from it (from the Japanese-only copy) when I taught my anime class.

"Macross" is, of course, the series that provided the first third of "Robotech."

Mari Iijima came to the U.S. at some point, settled in L.A., married an American and tried to get a career going there. Last I heard, none of that turned out well. I haven't kept up with her. I do have one of her albums, though. I'm not sure I ever listened to it all.

I did get "Sora no Mori" on your recommendation, Aine, and I'm glad I did. I recognized a number of the tracks from different anime series. Beautiful work.

Luckily, Madara, there's also this thing nowadays you might have heard of called the internet. :umad: You can get pretty much everything on BitTorrent -- I was able to download the 2012 remaster of the film in high quality. Took about an hour with my download speed. I'm pretty sure it's Japanese with subtitles.

I recommend listening to their first single too. Also check out Shiritsu Ebisu Chuugaku, 5572320 is kind of like their alter ego? Ebichu's latest 3 singles are especially good.

I used to have a really good blog to follow for non-idol releases in the J-music scene, Aipop, but I haven't checked it in a while and went to look the other day, and it's been shut down. Arco linked me to popcornlove for poppy stuff, but it doesn't have any of the distinctly non-pop artists I enjoy like Namie, Do As Infinity, and Kumi. Does anyone have any suggestions for other resources?

I like reading Pure Idol Heart. It is mostly indies idol stuff, but on occasion they do have groups that definitely aren't Pop.

I love when this happens.

I was watching GODZILLA VS. MEGAGUIRUS (2000) last night and during a scene set in a flooded Shibuya, I spotted a billboard that I was pretty sure was for a J-pop star. It's on the cylindrical tower in the right of this shot and is too far away to determine who the star is:

Image

A few shots later, we get a better view of it, on the far right in this shot:

Image

None other than Ayumi Hamasaki's single, "Seasons," which came out on June 7, 2000 (and this movie came out in December of that year, so the timing is right).

When I first saw this movie 14 years ago, I would not have known to look for that.

What's funny is that this part of the film is set in 2001, which was still in the future when they made this movie, while the design for the miniature sets in that sequence is based on how Shibuya looked in the spring of 2000. Of course, that single would have been old news by then. Toho to Avex: We're showing Shibuya a year from now in our movie; do you have any idea what the title of Ayu's single for next spring will be?

I found an interesting MV. It's basically a Christmas idol song that takes place on a beach with swim suits. It's a new and interesting combination (at least that I've seen). And the video isn't blocked in the US either!

Preordered the new panic album because I want the pen and I already bought two of the "free singles" if you preorder on iTunes.

Thought about getting the $16 one just because of the panic bubbly pin but I just have terrible luck with pins.

The new (or even first) MV from Brats is trying very hard to become the new definition of "edgy".

I know nothing about them, but they have Rei Kuromiya also known from Ladybaby on vocals.

This year's Kohaku lineup. New idol groups are Muses and Nogizaka46. SKE48, HKT48 and MomoClo Z are all out this year. Also no Kyary or Mizuki Nana, both of whom were on it the previous three and six years respectively.

Any Americans on it this year? Last year Chris Hart was there and they showed Idina Menzel singing "Let It Go" live from New York. Anything like that announced so far this year?

Also, any word on when the FNS end-of-year music festival is? And the lineup?

Thanks.

A lot of people think Kohaku is trying to limit the number of idols they have on. FNS was clearly a lot less picky, there's quite a few people on it who aren't all that popular or well known.

I've been listening to so much Beni lately, she has so many great songs! I booked a few tickets to see her in concert in a few weeks with my boyfriend (who even though he's only heard a few songs also quite likes her) and I hope she is good in concert too. 'Suki Dakara' and 'Darlin' are heaven, along with so many of her other tracks too.

Wow, FNS happened already. I'm sure HQ Video in New York has the DVD set already and I was there on Thursday and forgot to ask for it. It's got a great lineup, too, including MM and Momoiro Clover, AKB48, Perfume, BoA and Mika Nakashima and Nana Mizuki and a lot of the usuals.

Kohaku has Miki Imai, whom I started listening to in 2014. I'd really like to see her perform. And Seiko Matsuda and a lot of the usuals. No foreign acts, as far as I can tell.

Thanks.

Hmmm. I looked over the FNS lineups again and that article isn't 100% right.

This year, FNS has two shows: the traditional Kayousai that aired on the 2nd, and a second one on the 16th.

Here's the lineup for the 16th:
E-Girls
Ikimonogatari
AKB48
EXILE
SKE48
NMB48
ABC-Z
KAT-TUN
Kyary Pamyu Pamyu
Crystal Kay
Kobukuro
J Soul Brothers
Generations from EXILE TRIBE
Johnny's West
JUJU
Sexy Zone
Tackey & Tsubasa
T.M. Revolution
Nishiuchi Mariya (?)
NEWS
Nogizaka 46
Perfume
V6
Breakerz
Hoshino Gen
miwa
Morning Musume '15
Momoiro Clover Z
Moritaka Chisato
Yuzu
"and more"

I think they're separating the older folks who typically attend the previous shows from the one on the 16th. There's still some overlap, though: AKB, Generations, Nishiuchi,(who is she?), Nogizaka 46, and MomoClo (and whoever "and more" they have yet to announce) will be attending both.

Maybe they wanted to save on the live accompaniment on the new gen?

Ahh, thanks for checking. I would have been bewildered and annoyed to find no MM in the first one.

How are the two shows distinguished from each other, i.e. when I ask for them at HQ Video, how will the two different FNS shows be labeled?

The one on the second is titled "飛天" ("Hiten"); and the sixteenth, "THE LIVE".

The new Panic album is perfect.

Just wanted to let you all know.

My favorite track is "Don't Threaten Me With a Good Time". It uses the guitar riff from Rock Lobster.
