I don't know, you're saying a teenage girl could save up cash and be fiscally responsible. It's possible, but I can't think of one fiscally responsible teenager out of everyone I've ever met. Maybe one, but even she still depends on what one would count as frivolous spending vs saving since she splurged on some things.

Man, it really reeks of desperation. And Takamina appearing in a single after her graduation single, lol :lmfao:

The only thing that breaks my heart about this is that Takamina's graduation single (where she finally gets to be center), is the one single in 20+ singles (including the janken singles with random girls as center) that sells less than a million copies.

Sucks.

Kobayashi Kana is graduating. By the end of this year Umeda Ayaka will be the only original Team K member left unless she leaves too.

I liked imagining that a dip in sales would force AKB to start putting out fun, interesting songs again but of course I was wrong - let's just drag in a bunch of the old girls to make ourselves look super, super desperate LOL. I've been following AKB since their debut and I'd be lying if I said I don't feel like their music went to garbage pretty much the minute they got huge. So many of the new singles sound exactly like each other.

I wonder how much longer KojiHaru will be around. When you follow her instagram you can really tell she's trying to build herself up as her own brand rather than as a member of AKB - like, if I didn't know who she was, a glance at her insta wouldn't necessarily make me think she was a member of a group at all.

If it helps none of them are center. It's an HKT48 member who has a concurrency in team A.

So um. That's interesting?

Have they really experienced a "dip" in sales? Wikipedia shows their singles still selling over 1 million, with some well over that. Are those numbers inaccurate?

I think most groups have a shelf life, and AKB is probably coming close to reaching theirs. I've seen a lot of fans voicing the opinion online that they have become boring and predictable musically. It's just a matter of a new group debuting to replace them in the hearts of the wota. At a certain point, new girls are not enough to sustain an old idol brand. That Morning Musume has been able to catch a second wind and sustain 150K-ish sales is kind of amazing, really.

Their latest was their first in five years to not sell a million it's first week. Outside of their election singles they have experienced a decline although their sales are still massive. All of their subunits and soloists have declined as well.

Also they're in the same boat as MM where the massive majority of their sales come from handshakes, they just have a ton more girls and wota to take advantage of it. If you go look at old SoundScan charts, their regular store sales don't hit anywhere near a million.

Yep, all combined, their singles average around 100-125k in sales going off SoundScan. Certainly nothing to sniff at, but a 1,000,000 disparity is kind of amazing LOL. Their Oricon numbers are so big that they can take a pretty huge hit in sales before it looks like anything much. No one will notice that you sold 25-50k less than usual if you're still over a million.

That said, I'm guessing the little dip in sales is them losing what little general public interest they still had going for them - it makes sense considering the girls they're bringing back are some of the only ones the public had any awareness of. Despite AKB's sales, ask the average person if they know any song besides Heavy Rotation or MAYBE Koisuru Fortune Cookie, you're going to mostly come up empty. This is why you see a lot of people on Japanese forums complaining that AKB girls are plastered all over CMs, magazines, etc despite no one even knowing who they are. Companies are used to looking at the Oricon as a gauge of public interest ("Artist X is ruling the Oricon so they should definitely sponsor our brand!") but the new world of bulk-buying and handshake sales has made that incredibly inaccurate. Back when Hikki put out her debut album and it sold millions, damn near every household in Japan had a copy of it. Nowadays, Oricon numbers like that usually just mean there are a few guys sitting at home surrounded by boxes full of CDs. I'm rambling but my point is - AKB look a lot more popular than they actually are.

They've got a long while to go before they really have anything to worry about but there's a strong feeling that it's time for them to mix things up a bit, that they can't continue riding on name alone when they're slowly heading toward H!P's direction, where their only consumer base is wota. People are getting sick of them.

The last akb48 song I really liked was Koisuru Fortune cookie and I think that was released 2013. Other than that, the stuff they put out is boring and tame and there are just too many girls to learn the names of.

Heavy Rotation with a beautiful settings (and not sexy or cute).

The video is indeed really pretty but those Heavy Rotation "flashbacks" are annoying me. Have they ever thought about why some OGs didn't want to be labeled as ex-AKB48 anymore ? Fanservice may be one the reasons, in my opinion (I'm especially speaking about the kiss).

I really liked it! The song was simple and forgettable, but pleasant in my opinion. I usually find AKB's pleasant-pop type songs to be a weird kind of simple that just sounds lazy and underproduced, but this one just sounds like the right amount of production to me. Definitely not the most interesting thing they've put out, but at least it's done well.

Now... I still can't figure out the graduated member thing. I just keep wracking my brain and I can't come up with any logical reason they would all agree to come back! I understand a few of them, but all these girls? Unless there's a huge payday behind it, I just can't figure out why girls who have otherwise good careers post-AKB would plop themselves right back into it. Maybe it'll benefit them, I dunno...

Anyway, I was told that Miyawaki Sakura--my new AKB crush--would be the center of this single, so I leave disappointed that I didn't notice her in any of the video until towards the end. :( Maybe I'm blind?

This year's election has been scheduled for June 18th in Niigata. The lovely people over at Stage48 (who are far more pessimistic than I expected) pointed out that every year the SSK venue gets smaller lol.

Location: HARD OFF ECO Stadium Niigata
Eligible members:
1. AKB, SKE, NMB, HKT, NGT members (as of 3/23)
2. Team Kaigai AKB members (Chikano, Nakagawa)

2013 Nissan Stadium 72k
2014 Ajinomoto Stadium 49k
2015 Yahoo! Auction Dome 35k
2016 Hard Off Eco Stadium 30k

The two dates before Takamina's graduation have apparently also not sold out despite being on sale for a long time now and the venues are of a similar size to the SSK one. I guess they're having a harder time pushing ticket sales and also want to promote NGT48.

Watanabe Miyuki has announced she won't be participating in the election this year.

They've also announced their senbatsu for their 45th single:

Team A: Yokoyama Yui, Shimazaki Haruka, Kojima Haruna, Iriyama Anna, Hiwatashi Yui, Oya Shizuka, Miyazaki Miho
Team K: Minegishi Minami, Mukaichi Mion, Muto Tomu
Team B: Kizaki Yuria, Kashiwagi Yuki, Watanabe Mayu, Kato Rena, Oshima Ryoka
Team 4: Okada Nana, Kojima Mako, Takahashi Juri, Kawamoto Saya
Team 8: Yamada Nanami
Team S: Matsui Jurina, Kitagawa Ryoha
Team E: Goto Rara
Team N: Yamamoto Sayaka, Suto Ririka
Team M: Shiroma Miru
Team H: Sashihara Rino, Kodama Haruka
Team KIV: Miyawaki Sakura
Team NIII: Kato Minami, Kitahara Rie, Takakura Moeka

Mukaichi Mion is the center.

Watanabe Miyuki announced her graduation from NMB48. She's also got a concurrent position in AKB's Team B at the moment.

She didn't apply for the election and told fans not to buy her handshake tickets because she likely wouldn't be there so it was already speculated this would happen.

The 48 empire is active again. 2 new Chinese sister groups were announced. BEJ48 will be in Beijing, and GNZ48 will be in Guangzhou. TPE48 of Taiwan is also finally starting to happen. And there is also two more that were announced last month. BNK48 of Bangkok and MNL48 of Manilla.

Shimada Haruka, once the chubby girl next door, has officially been chosen as an ambassador for Carl's Junior Japan along with Abe Maria and it is the best thing AKB for me.

She wasn't ever a member, but an old kenkyuusei from 07-09, Tomita Mayu, was stabbed by a fan 20 times and is in critical condition. It seems she's working as a soloist, and he stabbed her a couple of hours before an event because she returned a gift he had sent her, and when he confronted her at a station she wouldn't give him a clear answer as to why. It appears he's been stalking her for awhile now.

I didn't know she was a Kenkyuusei. 48 girls have the worst luck... After that handshake incident, that SNH girl who got set on fire, and now this.

It's actually a different girl than the former '48 member. They just have the same name and Kanji spelling. Some sites have reported it wrong.

Minegishi didn't make senbatsu last year either to be fair. Stage48 has her first day voting at 60 in 2015. Iriyama didn't participate which probably hurt her this year.
