AKIHABARA Backst←→age pass

Post by Shoujo Q »

This needs to be talked about, because it hasn't been yet and according to one statement he made it looks like Hello!Project will soon be involved in some way. (Source from Tokyohive) (Original)

On December 22nd, music producer Tsunku held a press conference for the idol training cafe, “AKIHABARA Backst←→age pass“, at the cafe itself.

“Since this room will be packed with all different sorts of dreams, we’d like to show different kinds of entertainment,” said Tsunku of the cafe. He then added with confidence, “Our rival is Disneyland.”

Although it’s been widely said that the cafe’s greatest competition will be Akihabara-based idol group AKB48, Tsunku showed his professionalism by saying, “Rather than competing with them, let’s all do our best so that we can enliven Japan.”

Visitors to the cafe will be issued an employee ID card to the imaginary management company, “Ruaido Geinousha”, a play on words of the word ‘idol’ (aidoru). As ‘producers’, any foods, drinks, or goods purchased in the cafe will earn the customer “Producer Value Points”, which they can then use to support their ‘oshimen‘ out of the cafe’s workers. Aspiring idols working at the cafe will be given booking preference for outside activities if they accrue a high number of points. As customers climb through the ten “Producer Ranks”, they will be able to earn more points and therefore contribute more to these potential idols.

Many individuals in the music industry have been thinking of ways to tackle the issue of declining CD sales, and Tsunku decided that the solution may be outside of the box. He said he thought up the idea in hopes of creating “a space where music can be experienced”, and – together with his friend and multi-creator Shikura Chiyomaru – began working on the idol training cafe two years ago.

“If we can’t create culture, what happens to Japan’s J-Pop? We feel that it is our responsibility to support new formats,” expressed Tsunku. “After one or two years, we’d like to be able to put out well-trained stars.”

Out of the 1,000+ applicants who applied to work at the cafe, 80 were carefully chosen by Tsunku himself to be potential idols. “We held an audition the same way we did with Morning Musume,” he said, explaining the process by which the employees were chosen. “They have infinite potential.” Tsunku also revealed that he’s even considering collaborations with existing Hello! Project groups.

“I’d like to reveal one [idol] by next summer. We’ll be doing our best so that the stars of the near future can be born, so we would love it if everyone could support us as producers,” said Tsunku.

A special live was also held by the opening staff, who performed the Morning Musume classic “LOVE Machine” for the crowd. The cafe officially opened on December 23rd.

I also found a video (from PIH) that explains what's going on and better shots of most of the girls.

I see The Possible members!. I hope he also continues to release music for them because I think it would be very helpful for them if this whole cafe idea works like he wants it too. Also I'll be interested to see what he's hinting at when it comes to Hello!Project. I think I remember him doing auditions and stuff for something on his Tsuntube show. Seeing the creepy anime head girl reminded me of that.

I hope this helps and doesn't hinder Hello!Project in anyway.

Because in Akihabara it's okay to look like an AKB knock-off when first starting out.

Morning Musume had something similar for one of their concerts I think? I distinctly remember plaid being a thing of beauty during their Platinum 9 tour.

So... since he's doing this too, I expect he's spread pretty thin.

So... Give some good songwriters a chance to work with H!P. Specifically Morning Musume. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/dry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='<_<' />

The concept is pretty neat, though I doubt much will come from it, unless he actually picked talented girls. (Like the "one that may debut next summer" must be a good performer ala Aya Matsuura when she started, right?)

I think they look more like Afilia Saga East than AKB. Which Tsunku is involved in too isn't he?

I wonder what existing H!P groups he's thinking of... Now I'm kind of nervous. Although, I'd still much rather go there than Disney Land. Does Japan/Asia have their own DL? I know there's one in Paris...

Tokyo Disneyland, Risa's new home once she's retired from Morning Musume. I almost went there when I was in Japan, but we were in Tokyo for so short a time that it seemed like it was impossible to do EVERYTHING at once. I went to the Ghibli Museum instead. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... R#>/8o.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='8o' />

I could see Morning Musume or S/mileage doing something involved with that. So many new girls, it seems like a good place to train them and get them some fans. But more then likely the eggs? I don't know, when Tsunku is involved, anything is possible.

I don't remember plaid outfits in that tour (but I haven't seen it in awhile) but the most recent tour had these outfits. That I didn't notice were sequined until just now.

Their rival is Disney? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... pyeyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Does that mean we won't be able to look forward to any more collaborations?

If done well, this can be either very fun and cool for both the fans and the idols, or very sleazy.

It'd probably be fun to have an idol-themed amusement park and be an amusement park worker! Hopefully the patrons will be respectful of them since they'll be in close proximity with 'idols'.

This whole concept seems awesome. I just hope this isn't another Tsunku pipe dream and this actually takes off. That being said, I hope this thing is still around when I visit Japan next year with my fiancee.

Uggh, can you imagine being called back and being told that you made it into the program, only to find out when you get there that you were cast as the friggin anime girl mascot?

"And here's your uniform..." <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... popper.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':popper:' />

It really bothers me that the girl inside is probably cuter than the moe goblin.

God help her if her looks are more offsetting and unpleasant than that awful thing though.

Is it a bad thing that I don't trust Tsunku to have the proper judgment not to waste a good idol in that atrocity mask?

On that note...

Is there even a market for that kind of idol? I've heard of people paying good money to photograph and go on 'dates' with girls in these masks, but idols??

Watching Tsuntube, I think she was always like that. There are girls that like that sorta thing and the wotas that also like that sort of thing. It's very creepy if you ask me, it's like one step above Furryism. Image

I don't know how I feel about this concept specifically, but I love that Tsunku is trying to expand into other media rather than just clinging to wota CD sales. Whether this works out or not it's nice to think that he'll continue trying different things.

Tsunku's been all up in other media. He was producing crazy ass movies in the '00s, a few with MM members in them, and he's behind the highly successful Rhythm Heaven game series. We know him mainly for idols, but homeboy gets around.

His games are supposed to be really good, but he did use TNX/NGP in them so I guess it's still somewhat idol-oriented.

Hi there! Found this video, which is basically a larger video of the one I posted on the first post that basically tells you everything you want to know about Akihabara B.S (Poor choice of acronym there Tsunku.)

Awkwardness and poor English attack. You've been warned!

I said B.S was a poor choice of acronym. Aeug tried to correct me by saying it doesn't matter because only Americans would understand it. I still found it funny anyway because I wasn't implying that the Japanese would get it, or something like that.

But in Japan, all the BS stations actually do mean "broadcast satellite" so that's what they'd think of before Penn & Teller's awesome show.
