I seem to think everyone of English descent that came to America, came from the North or where ever the Cockney accent came from. Thus giving everyone improper English as a starting base. ;D

As far as the girl in the video's English, yeah, it was kinda awkward, but I know a lot of Japanese people who have a great knowledge of a language on paper but difficulty speaking. I'm the same way with Japanese. It's easier for me on paper than speaking to/for someone, especially a native speaker.

Why don't more HP girls learn English? They all say they want to do concerts in England/America/wherever but they don't seem too motivated to be truly international. English has become one, if not the international language.

OK. Stick with me here.

There is a theory in linguistics that there is something in our brains called a Language Acquisition Device, or LAD (Noam Chomsky's idea) that helps people learn language. This includes the different sounds in a language. For example, we have sounds like the "st" consonant cluster at the beginning and the "r" at the end of the word "star" in English. The Japanese language doesn't have many consonant clusters (or at least the same consonant clusters that English has) or an ending "r" sound, so they end up using a kind of replacement sounds to make the English word. "Star" as a native English speaker would say it becomes "スター" or "sutaa" (like in Oha Star).

Back to the LAD. The idea has been expanded and most people that follow this line of thinking believe that you learn all of the sounds in a language that you will be able to make by the time puberty hits or is over. Either way, you will be able to make all of the language sounds and learn a language the easiest before the age of 13ish. Some people say as high as 16 years old. This doesn't mean that you can't learn any sounds after that, but it just suggests that you might not be able to make the language sound like a native speaker would speak it.

Tsunku/H!P/UFA has many of their girls from a very early age. Shoot, how long were the original S/mileage girls in the Eggs before their debut? They could have been teaching them to speak English to sound more like a native speaker (I know it is required in schools, but emphasis on speaking seems pretty lacking as far as most of my Japanese friends have indicated) so they wouldn't have weird sounding English in their songs (although that is half of the fun, isn't it?) and they would be able to communicate with their international fans more easily. Many people in the world have English as a Second Language (ESL), so it seems the logical choice for them to study when you consider what languages are taught in other countries.

I realize the girls in this cafe probably haven't been with whatever company Tsunku is using to do this for that long, but I there would be fewer awkward moments and a better chance of spreading their group's popularity on an international scale if they actually could communicate more easily with fans. I know the girls here are just trying to make their major debuts and everything, but just think of what possibilities could come from this? I know I'm extremely biased toward something I intended to make into a career before I fell ill, but I just like to think that it would result in more international tours and eventually seeing some of my favorite H!P groups in concert in the US more often.

Source: many classes and hours of study. This was a sadly condensed version. I'll try to find some articles somewhere online that aren't behind some stupid database like JSTOR and don't cost money.

This was kinda on topic, right?

1. You make a lot of sense.

2. In Japan they don't start leaning English until they hit Junior High School.

3. The way they teach English in Japan sucks ass, as do the majority of the so called teachers in this country.

4. Nothing will change in Japan until they start teaching English from Elementary School 1st grade and ideally before that too.

You know how many retarded scripts these kids have to learn?

English kids - ABC.

Japanese kids - Kanji, Hiragana, Katakana, Romaji, English

I've had Junior high school students come to my school so freaking angry that their teacher corrected them on something pathetic, it happens so often.

quick example -

Question - "What are you going to do tomorrow?"

Student wrote - "I'm going to go shopping with friends"

Teacher marks it WRONG... I kid you not, why was it wrong? the "actual" answer was "I'm going to go shopping with friends TOMORROW"

and so, Japanese people SUCK at English.

Way off topic, sorry!

I agree with you at least in principal... it seems like they should be able to train at least one or two girls in English. But then hell, look at Ogawa--moved to NZ for a year, passed the TOEFL... and yet her comprehension is barely passable. Also unfortunately I think a lot of the girls that try out for H!P (and idol groups at large) aren't super into academia. DX

There's no point in learning English from the management point of view. Lets face reality. None of H!P is going to become famous in the West.

So the added costs of English lessons > benefits. So no English, sorry.

Well dang that didn't work like I thought it was, but it does illustrate another idea in language learning where many people incorrectly perceive the meanings of words!

I also realize none of this is going to happen. It's a decent idea.

Rob: I've been looking at the way English is taught in Japan a lot, and there is just so much working against people learning it that I understand why this won't happen. Also, my Japanese teacher graded like that. It was a frustrating experience before I learned how he wanted things to be.

Trying to get back on topic... (Sorry for that. It was kinda related!)

Has anyone found any more videos or info about the girls? When I search for new info I tend to get AKB48 stuff. I'm worried if I start following it too much I'll end up disappointed about what's happening with them like I did with the Eggs until I stopped paying much attention to them.

Trouble is, 75% of Japanese kids don't get past the frustrated experience, I want to inspire confidence, let them realize that language is something fluid and in a constant state of change.

Not even native speakers speak perfect English, and every country in the world has different spellings, sayings, phrases, accents, etc etc etc

It's not that they CAN'T do it, a lot of them work really hard and get good grades, but with little to none speaking experience and zero conversational ability, what exactly is the point?

When a child gets something wrong on a test I give them, If I believe that if I heard that spoken out loud and I would understand the sentence I mark it as correct, but make sure that they correct it afterwards.

I've successfully had junior high school kids write and perform a drama within an hour, write horror stories for Halloween, and I gave them ZERO help. in this situation they are forced to use whatever they know and yes some of it is wrong and some of it is very wrong, but in the correction process is the key to success.

ANYWAY.

Bump time for news! (Sayunii version)

Tsunku's little experiment will result in a single being released on August 1st. The idol group will be called, Bakusute Sotokanda Icchoume.

No word yet on who the members will be, but I bet you can expect some craziness.

Bakusute Sotokanda Icchoume

OT rant warning.

Tsunku needs to drop his shtick with weird group names finally. It's old and doesn't work. A group name is a major part of the groups image, the first thing that a potential buyer sees. If it's bad or weird then any normal buyer will spend 0.5 second looking at and analysing it, another 0.5 second rolling their eyes, and move along on the CD shelf / online music store / TV channel... Only wotas would care about the Deep Grand Concept behind each name that you can read about on Tsunku-P's blog.

I don't know about Japanese buyers/listeners, but for me nearly all group names in there recent 5-10 years were major turn-offs. Buono! is one exception, and lo and behold, they clicked commercially too. Coincidence? GAM could have been another, but the sunny-side up egg PV killed any future this group may have had...

So the single is being released on August 1st. (I already mentioned that, but here it is again with more info!)

It'll be called Produce

Check out the website for the PV. (They manage to get all the girls (even Anime Head Girl) into the dance shot.)

Celedam on jplopposted a bunch of new info regarding the Back Stage Pass stuff, so I wanted to share it here in case anyone is interested:

They revamped their website! Here it is.

Easy for English speakers to navigate.

All of THE Possible members have profiles in the cast page for some reason. Someone else on jplop says there's Afilia Saga East members in it as well.

Yurika

Aina

Kanami

Robin

Yuki

They're also releasing their second single:

Image

Title: 「ヨロピク ピクヨロ」 ("Yoropiku Pikuyoro"), with music and lyrics by Tsunku

Released: 30 January 2013

Regular Edition, LE Edition (only available at the cafe), and DVD edition.

THE Possible does seem to have been dragged into a lot of Tsunku's projects lately, so this isn't very surprising, but OH MY GOD, if I could get Mororin or Got~u to serve me my lunch I think I would die.

If their new single is as good as the songs on the first one, I really need to try to track this down somehow. The first one was produced in really limited quantities and is was really only available in shops in Japan, their theater or through the TNX/Good Factory website.

I went to the website a few weeks ago and noticed all these updates and new single announcement, but it looks like they updated it again since then. I forgot we had a thread here.

The lineup is pretty decent for having so many, they're somewhat diverse. I'm kinda surprised he hasn't thrown the Canary Club girls into the group too, since they're not doing anything. So many megane girls...

Other noteworthy things:

This anime girl. So cute, but so weird.

This girl is pretty white and pretty...pretty..sorta.

This is the Marina from TNX/NGP. She's been around for a while.

The ugly version of Minegishi Minami.

I'm more curious as to why Afilia members are on it. I know Tsunku has written for them a few times, but they're with a completely different company last I checked.

Oh, wait. They're part of a maid cafe, too, aren't they? That might explain this.

I know she's one of the Afilia girls. She goes by Kohime Lit Pucci. And like the Possible girls, she has no points, suggesting that you can't vote for her in the rankings?

Also, found this:

It seems they are kind of a cross-group between Tsunku's projects and some other stuff. I've been doing a lot of reading and research on the idol industry and apparently more of these management agencies are actually partners and subsidiaries of one another than we think, so their jimusho might be a part of TNX or TNX might be a part of them, etc. Afilia has kinda always gone with the whole "magical maid" type image, so it would make sense they work at the cafe and take part in some of this other stuff. He has had them on Tsuntube a few times, so I imagine he has to be linked with their management somehow.

I'm not quite getting how the point system is noted on the site, its kinda confusing. It seems like they ALL have at least some votes, some are just exponentially less than others, but I don't see that you can view the entire ranking, just usually around the top 20.

Also, found this:
