Well, jeez. NOW who am I supposed to blame for Aika's bad hairline?! There's no way she put herself in that terrible style again and again. Though I always had my suspicions with Reina's concert hair sparkles, so I'm not surprised at all about that.

I think it's more along the lines of, management puts them into a style for a single and then they are told to make it work for the rest of the run for that single on their own. Even if they like it or not. From reading the blogs, other girls will help other girls with their hair. So it's really a team effort for the most part.

Yup, they do their own makeup too. It's actually a Morning Musume rule, they've talked about it on TV a few times. I know occasionally hair/makeup is done for them, especially when they do special photoshoots for magazines - Sayu has written on her blog about it. For singles and albums they are probably given a theme - I'm sure Zukki didn't just up and decide she wanted crazy sailor moon villain hair for One. Two. Three xD



But for TV appearances and concerts they're in charge of their own look and they all make their own decisions about cutting and coloring their hair - again with acceptions for promotional purposes, like all of S/mileage getting short cuts for the single.



As for the braid headbands, Sayu often does them herself. She talks a lot on her blog about perfecting her technique. Ayumi can do the cat ear hair herself too - though I've seen tutorials and that one isn't as hard as it looks.

Kanon actually had that hair at Risa's graduation first. Unless they brought in people for it, she or someone else knew how to do it.

I thought they weren't really allowed to do their own hair until they had been there for a while. I remember Risa saying that she hated the pigtails they made her wear and then she was happy when they told her they were going to change it until she found out it was going to be a ponytail with the same center part. Plus there was that thing with Sayumi getting whoever to make JunJun dye her hair so people wouldn't confuse them.

Man, guess it's a good thing I never made it into MoMusu then. I am crap at hair. Makeup, pro. Hair...not so much.

Back in the day when they were pumping out number one songs and on every TV show, I'm sure they had plenty of stylists and image consultants and whatnot, and the company had more control over them. Now that they are on a much smaller scale, members get to do their own thing once they've proven themselves. The newer members get told what to do (like Masaki's "Cleopatra hair"), but after a while they can do whatever they want, like Takahashi saying "fuck it" and just cutting all her hair off without telling anyone.

Oh yeah definitely, but I'm pretty sure there's some serious real braiding going on a lot of the time... not just headband-style, but all up the sides of their heads and stuff. And it's hard! I didn't mean to imply that management never steps in and makes executive decisions. Just that in general, they're supposed to have responsibility over it and they actually do have more imput than most people think. The Risa thing is from a long time ago - back when they were a lot busier, as Al mentions. As for the Sayumi/JunJun - I remember that a little differently, that Sayu directly told JunJun to die her hair, but either way it shows that member opinions on hair definitely factor in. Sayu's opinion just trumped in that case because she was the senior member.



When they're new I'm sure they get more help and guidance or have to ask permission for big changes, but Reina did explain on that show that did a behind the scenes look into their concerts that it's an expected duty of the members to do those things for themselves.

So did the fans in the crowd who called her "Chibi" which means midget or short ass or something like that, not particularly rude per se but not that nice either, it can be used in friendly situations as a joke as it was here. Reina was all like "They gots da boots on so shut yo mouths" to the crowd in a way that I've never really seen a mm member talk to the fans.

I don't think Reina has ever been that into MM. I'm sure she was a fan before she joined and was happy to pass the audition, but I think like Maki her ambitions have always been more "I want to be a star" than "I'm dying to be a part of MM!" She's never been really close with other members either. It's probably easier to not give a fuck when you don't have strong emotional attachments to either the group itself or the individual members. I'm sure she's also not too happy that she's sharing her spotlight with Riho, a relative newbie who isn't good at singing.



Being in an idol group (particularly female) can also be really limiting in terms of how you can act, creative control, your image, all that. Once she leaves MM/H!P Reina can let her inner bitch run wild! And she'll be in a band created specifically for her with girls her age. She's also always mentioning on her blog that she wants to try out this or that, which she'll probably have time for when she's done with MM.

Yupyupyup. I don't think Reina ever particularly wanted to be an idol, so much as she wanted to be in show business. I think the same goes for just about anyone that joined post-4th gen (Risa and Ai had been in commercials, or on children's shows, much like Ayumi, Riho and Erina were modeling and in dance troupes before auditioning). I don't think Risa or Takahashi were starcrossed in love with Momusu, but I do get the feeling that they feel a sense of loyalty towards the group. I don't really get that feeling from Reina, tbh. Honestly, I think she feels kind of "above it". Unfortunately, I don't think she's particularly talented.
