It's such a shame that the no-dating rule is still around in idol groups, especially since, in just about every other situation, dating, marriage, (sometimes) pregnancy all really boost a talent's career or give them good publicity. Ayumi Hamasaki getting married, Koda Kumi getting knocked up and married, Namie Amuro's marriage, pregnancy, divorce, and dating rumors, not to mention all the singers I don't obsess over; it's never an "I'm sorry I cheated on you, Public-At-Large." This really speaks to the voyueristic and awfully misleading nature of idols as "fill-in" relationships. The level of obsession the fans show just fuels this chaste image the girls are forced to maintain and there isn't any counter-force. And, in something like AKB where you're so replaceable and miniscule in the big picture, the girls have to be this upset. They have to play into the virtual approachability of it all to bring in the sales, to stay in the spotlight, to maintain the fans that demand more and more allegiance to a group many of the girls want to use as a jumping-off point.

Minami's head being shaved could have been a tactical move to keep her from completely getting the boot, it could've been an emotional self-chastisement, it could've been the out her management gave her to stay in the group. As long as the fans are allowed to be so maniacal about these girls' personalities and virtual approachability, firings, demotions, and personal self-degradation will all keep happening.

This is all true, and this would be a solution, but it has gone so far now, there is no conceivable way to just get millions of people to stop feeling a certain way unless idols literally get banned just like in the AKB 0048 show and it is illegal to produce, follow, or take part in idol groups. You can't just yell at them and say YOU'RE FUCKING IDIOTS, STOP BEING SO OBSESSED AND RUINING THINGS FOR EVERYONE ELSE. The industry has been going strong on this very same mentality for about 40 years, so much like most other things in Japan, I don't see it changing anytime soon. Why fix what's broken if you can just cover it up and keep going? That should be the global motto for Japanese business.

You've been researching the idol industry, including old groups/solists from like the 70s/80s/90s/whatever right? I would be very interested in a thread where you maybe shed some light on the things you've learned about idols and their attitudes toward the industry, something I think you brought up knowing a little bit about in the Koharugate thread?

I have been doing a lot of research on not only the idol industry, but Japanese business in general for many years, but more intensely in the last 6 months or so. We did create a thread here to discuss some of these things and also discuss some of the reading material I've shared with people here, but no one has really commented on anything. It was right before Christmas when I passed out some of the reading materials, so I figured everyone got wrapped up with family crap and whatever else and probably didn't read it, haha.

I love talking about this stuff, but it seems most other people don't want to get that far into it. And when I try to talk about it on NHGG, I just get shit on and Jet tells me how I don't know anything about anything and I'm always wrong then threatens to ban me, so I don't bother much anymore. Some people are afraid to really analyze what's going on behind the scenes of their beloved idols, but scandals like this just keep pushing further and further into making people look further into it.

I can send you some of the reading materials if you want and maybe we could actually start a discussion where it never started before? Let me know.

Also, here's a translation of management's official G+ post about all this:

We have received many opinions and questions from the fans regarding the video of Minegishi’s apology. I would like to add further explanations since the we failed to fully express an explanation to you.

・Why did you have to upload a video like this?

When we were in a hurry preparing for the streaming and we have received a report that Minegishi really wants to apologize personally with her hair shaved. We felt how strong her will and feeling towards AKB48 was, so we decided to stream the video as we planned.

・Was it necessary for her to shave her hair?

Was it necessary? Or not? If you ask me, the answer will probably be “No, it wasn’t. However, what I can tell you for sure is that Minegishi surely wanted to convey how strong her feeling was.

・Couldn’t anybody stop her from shaving her hair?

I heard that when she came out from the make up room, she had already shaved her hair. It seems that the staff beside her did stop her. However, I heard that she said that people might think of her as a fool, but she really wanted to put her reflection into action, so she cut her bangs using scissors without losing control over herself.

・Isn’t it unfair that the punishment for each of the members who had scandals were different?

It would be better if we can establish the common rule. However, we are experiencing a dilemma because it is difficult to conceive a common rule since each member is under a different situation.

For example, there was a member who had been warned many times, but did not listen to anyone and caused a scandal.

There was also a member who wanted to pursue her dreams and was about to plan on graduating when a scandal about her was exposed.

There was also a member whose past incident was reported as a scandal.

There was also a member whose scandal was not exposed, but had a huge rule violation behind the scenes.

Please do understand that we have to make decisions with consideration to many circumstances.

・There was a photo of Minegishi, which has been uploaded on the internet, where she looked like she was having fun with the first generation members. Did she really reflect on her actions?

Before the rehearsals of the theater performance of Team B, I saw Minegishi who came to apologize with an exhausted expression on her face, so I can say that she has reflected on her actions. At the same time, it seemed like she was trying her best not to make people around her feel worried. I think that is the reason why the members of the same generation as her were encouraging Minegishi who was feeling depressed.

We, the managing team, would like to support the members who are trying their best to pursue their dreams by having continuous discussion with them.

This thread is a shit storm and so many of you suck.

I don't follow AKB but the nature of idol culture and celebrity fanaticism is ultimately warped.

I don't know how deeply your heads are shoved up your satisfied assholes that you can't understand how a standard job might differ from that of a celebrity "job." The system sucks, is exploitative, and literally runs idols' lives 24 hours a day (especially with the omnipresence of tabloid media). And if all you can do is rub your hands and giggle smugly about how all this bullshit was once in a contract, then you are endorsing the bullshit. And if you can watch that "apology" given by a girl (who was clearly distraught over years of hardwork obliterated by a DATE), and still jerk yourself off to the Great Law of Contracts Made By Creepy Paternalistic Culture and see nothing else worth commenting on, go eat a bag of dicks.

Reading the comments is fun, mainly because you know a lot of them have no clue who AKB48 are and don't know how the Idol world operates. So it's almost like reading an unbiased view on the whole thing.

I found most of their comments to be insulting and rude, considering a lot of them were insulting Japan as a whole, and saying that their culture is screwed up. Just because Idol rules are a bit stupid doesn't mean the whole country should be insulted.

The idol industry is, to some degree, a projection and exaggeration of the rest of the Japanese economy and job market. It's not uncommon that women are frowned at, even by older women, if they have "un-female" jobs, basically them not being OLs, or want to be managers and the likes. Which is very hard for them to become anyway.

The Japanese society is unfortunately still very much stuck with the classic role models for men and women.

If you're really interested in the topic, I can suggest these two books:

- Vera LinkMackie "Feminism in modern Japan" (2003), Cambridge Univ. Press. <- general overview.

- Sumiko Iwao "The Japanese woman" (1993), Free Press. <- this is kind of a chronology/history book, that explains the change of the role of women and their depiction. Just note that it's from 1993.

- Beverley Bishop "Globalization and women in the Japanese workforce" (2005), Routledge Curzon. <- never actually heard of this book before, but the title seems fitting. lol And since my institute's library has it, it can't be really bad.

More like AKB only. They're the ones that most of this shit has centered around, and not just this, but all their marketing stunts and "Whoops! We didn't know that would offend anyone!" incidents. The majority of other idol groups get by just fine. Hell, HP has one of the better mediums since the members can graduate and still continue idol-like activities but get married, have kids, etc.

I agree that H!P has a much better handle on their idols than any other agency I've seen (not saying much considering I don't know many), but they're idols instead of singers because they keep the creepy, perverted wota fanbase happy with bikini-clad photobooks and the no dating rule especially. I'd be fucking elated to see this shit done away with. :/ I'm not ashamed in any capacity to be a fan of idol groups, and the creepy wota factor has never embarrassed me enough to hide what I like, but I'd still feel much better if it were gone.

This Minami stuff with AKB is way worse than that, but it all boils down to the idol culture as a collective, and those specific manifestations of it can 100% GTFO.

3 things, having cooled down.

Vera Mackie is awesome.

Shaving ones hair off is pretty symbolic, culturally and in terms of gender politics. And she also seemed to be famous for her hair too, which makes it more meaningful. It is a bit different than Britney Spears cracking and shaving her extensions off. Spears came off like a big fuck you to the ridiculous celebrity pressure and surveillance. This kid shaved her head as an act of PENANCE. Wtf?

I doubt this will "change" anything in the industry. However, this might signal the decline of or change in fan demographics. most people probably think its ridiculous and fucked up that idol rules pander to the deluded obsessed few. I mean, she's 20 years old!!

Just like it centered around H!P before AKB came along. H!P was the only idol troupe who really had scandals in the periods between 1999 and 2006-ish because that's when they were popular and media-worthy to the mainstream and the only ones who were around and popular enough for anyone to care. Get of your goddamn horse and quit being so naive and ignorant.

but all their marketing stunts and "Whoops! We didn't know that would offend anyone!" incidents.
Does anyone take notice and criticize that Nakky's new PB has shots of her appearing to be completely naked? How about MM photobooks where 14 year old girls look like they're about to cry and/or get raped? How does that go over? Or do people just overlook it because they're blinded and unable to think anything negative about H!P, hypocritical as it may be, yet will talk shit about AKB day and night? This shit gets out of hand way too often. What about handshake tickets or 6 different versions of every release to increase sales? H!P would never..oh wait. Man, H!P is SO different than AKB.

Hell, HP has one of the better mediums since the members can graduate and still continue idol-like activities but get married, have kids, etc.
Because no one cares about them anymore. They can do whatever the fuck they want at any point and no one would catch them or care if they did get caught. The general public of Japan doesn't even know that H!P or MM is still around anymore. The tabloid media is out following AKB members 24/7, they'd never have time to see what the H!P girls are doing, or care, cause there's no money or fame to be had from exposing such a scandal with a nobody. Do you really fail to see that the media just follows whatever is popular and what has the most to lose from scandal and bad publicity? Sorry to break it to you, but that sure as fuck isn't H!P right now.

I agree that H!P has a much better handle on their idols than any other agency I've seen (not saying much considering I don't know many), but they're idols instead of singers because they keep the creepy, perverted wota fanbase happy with bikini-clad photobooks and the no dating rule especially.
Just like I said to Al, this is a ridiculously naive and uninformed view of this situation.

Do we really need another photobook and H!P vs. AKB48 on the sexualized idol argument? Showraniy doesn't seem to be saying H!P isn't guilty of it at all.

And I think you CAN make the comparison of how they handle dating scandals. It is the SAME type of fan, H!P or AKB48, who give a shit about whether idols date. We don't need to bring the general public into this because they're not the ones full of unwarranted outrage.

As for post-graduation, I imagine the AKB members will be free to do whatever they want as well, as idols in general tend to lose a lot of the limelight once they graduate. From what I can tell, they're allowed to do as they please once they're gone.

You sound like you believe that H!P's fans, photobooks, and dating rule are the only things holding them back from being legitimate singers or artists. Did you forget that they have no budgets for PVs, concerts or advertising? Did you forget their gaudy costumes, silly ass lyrics and bubblegum music? Or the average age being around 15-16 years old? All of those things solidly concrete a group as being idols from head to toe.

Also don't know how oblivious/in denial you are about them "never having scandals" or being "better managed" or handled, either, since before AKB took over the mainstream spotlight for idols, H!P had quite a fair share of scandals and trouble, and they had a hell of a lot less girls to get in trouble than AKB does. And I sure as hell don't see any of the senior/graduated members making any waves in the entertainment industry or even the idol industry itself. They just fade into further obscurity and do dinner and radio shows until they finally decide to quit. I wouldn't really call that a "better medium" for success in post-graduation or old age.

Not trying to attack you, I just don't know how much of what you agreed with from Al that you actually believe.

Those blinders work both ways. The amount you write off the current HP is staggering. No, they aren't selling millions of singles like AKB, but they are more popular than they've been in a decade. And HP has had less "scandals" in 15 years (ooh! cigarettes!) than AKB has managed in the last few months alone.

What does this even mean? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/huh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

If people are going to keep throwing unwarranted shit at other idol groups, the argument is going to keep coming up. I don't even see it as a rivalry between the groups like most H!P fans seem to, they both operate completely independently to me, yet people want to continue to make a war out of it. Current H!P is just 85% disappointment to me. I don't just speak negatively about them because I'm constantly trying to underhandedly say OMG AKB IS BETTER. Hell, I haven't even really been much of an AKB fan for about a year running, they've been just slightly less disappointing than H!P, but I don't make it into a fucking rivalry and shit-slinging war about who is better than the other. All I'm trying to say is that they're pretty much the goddamn same, they're just popular in different time periods, as much as H!P fans will jump through hoops to deny this.

I'd rather read through slut shaming body shaming misogynistic comments than read through yet another H!P versus AKB thread.
