Yay subs! Suuuubs!! I'm hoping all future subbers focus on this stuff 'cause I really wanna understand what's going on.

EDIT: On second thought, after watching 5 and 6, I'm not sure there's enough to sub. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Seems like it's mostly latest releases stuff.

New HP Station episode hosted by Dawa.

It's got rehearsal footage of the new MM tour. I want one of those tour staff shirts most of the girls are wearing.

And LOL at Duu when Tsunku comes out. She's all "Dis some bullshit!!!"

As for that C-ute play, one of those girls is going to kill themselves on those stairs. Holy crap. That's all I have to say about that.

Is it just me or does Mizuki try too hard to sing cutely? It's almost like I can hear this great big voice hiding under a big pink duvet...

Welcome to the world of idols, tbh. So much potential wasted on the much easier to sell cuteness. Wota don't care if you can sing - actually, I think a lot of them prefer crappier singing because it makes the girl seem more approachable and average.

That said, I'm loving these solo corners. I was kind of disappointed by Airi's rendition of Kono Machi, though. Her voice sounded much thinner and cutesier than usual. Meanwhile, Kanon surprised me and sounded much less pitchy than she does in most concerts.

PS Maasa as a host >>>>>>>>> everyone else.

It's one thing to be singing on stage or in the studio, it's another to be singing in what looks like the hall of an office building. I probably wouldn't be belting anything out either to be honest. It's a good thing they moved the next two outside.

The solo corners are by far my favorite and I hope each and every H!P girl gets a chance to do one.

Also nice to have concert footage and backstage stuff on YT without fear of deletion.

I'm really unsure as to how much Mizuki has to offer. Hearing her audition 2 years ago, I thought she would be light years ahead of where she is now, vocally. Since there's so little emphasis on vocal skill in the Japanese idols, I feel like a lot of girls don't really care much about singing and mostly just wanted to be famous or to get to perform on stage. Even if you take singing lessons, you're only going to see real improvement if you have a good balance of a) natural talent and b) working on your own time. I'm not really sure if anyone in the current line-up takes singing seriously enough to attempt b)working on your own time. They might view singing as an attachment of their real job, which is simply to entertain, regardless of how good or bad you sound. In some cases (mostly Mizuki, Haruka, Kanon and Masaki), I would find it very disappointing for them to have that attitude, as I think they have a decent amount of a) natural talent.

I don't think the problem with Mizuki (or Kanon or Haruka - Masaki is debatable) is that she doesn't care. If you look at their blogs, these girls talk about wanting to get better at singing all the time.

The problem is more like...

1. I don't think these girls get very involved vocal lessons these days. Or rather, whatever it is they're being taught isn't the best method. Riho talks about going to vocal lessons all the time, yet she seems to regress. Other girls almost never mention vocal lessons, which leads me to believe they're only really given to girls who need a lot of work or girls who are being pushed heavily.

2. A lack of under-fire practice. Most of the girls you mentioned don't have to sing solo lines that much during performances of their singles or even concerts. When you're on stage in front of tons of people, even if they're cheering you on it's still really embarrassing if you fuck up. Not to mention the pressure to impress your peers/senpai. But in those situations where someone is out sick and suddenly a bunch of lines need taking over, who does it? Never Mizuki, Kanon, or Haruka.

And finally, I honestly think Mizuki, Kanon, and Haruka's biggest problem is the fact that they're huge H!P fans. It makes them lovable, but it seems that they're so happy just to be in H!P that they have no sense of competition. They're not fighting to take the center. So in a sense, you're right, perhaps they don't care as much. I guess I see it more like... not so much that they don't care about being better singers, but that they don't feel the need to go all out and do everything necessary to get more spotlight, which would include stepping up their game and being amazing singers with style and flare instead of just technically sound singers.

Guys, she was walking through a residential neighborhood with headphones playing music that she was singing along to. For at least four minutes.

If I were sitting near a window where I could hear some random girl walking down my street singing loudly for four minutes, I'd be annoyed. I doubt anyone wants to belt there. Same goes for Airi singing in a hallway and whoever else did covers. Unless I'm in a room, I would be holding back.

They don't even sing much outside of solo lines. In Renai Hunter, they each have ONE line and one line only to sing. Listen to their Help Me mic rips and Haruka and Kanon's are quiet throughout most of the song. Same with most of the newer songs. They don't even get much experience singing group lines.

As for ambition, I don't know. I think it's easy to lose a lot of it after two years when you see that only one of you is getting a real push that actually means a lot. I can't imagine that they've been around this long and think that hard work is all it takes, since popularity will always play a bigger role than any amount of skill or talent will. They pick out whoever got a lot of wota attention in the auditions and they go with them. If you were popular in your auditions, you're almost guaranteed a front girl position now no matter what.

Agreed on vocals. It's the pandas part 2, except there's no racism holding them back.

I don't entirely agree that it all comes down to popularity. I mean it does, but I think popularity is something the majority of girls have to make for themselves. Riho came into the game popular through her audition, sort of like Maki - before anyone jumps on me I'm not comparing their talent levels - I'm just saying neither of them had to really work for it. Maki stood around being aloof and standoffish for years but stayed popular because of her looks and performance skills. Riho is sort of similar in that she rides on her stage presence, dancing, and looks. But girls like Kei, Tsuji (to an extent most of the 4th gen in the early days), Makoto, Sayu - they had to really work and put themselves out there to gain screen time, popularity, and singing parts. In the current MM, Haruna is probably the best example of this. She was pretty much invisible in Renai Hunter ~ Help Me and even Colorful Character. Then in Brainstorming she all of a sudden gets a pretty long and memorable solo line despite still being a weak singer. She's put herself out there and shown off her personality - she's winning over fans which translates into more focus over some of the more talented singers.

I've given up trying to figure out why they push people/give people lines. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with talent or popularity. I mean, Haruka can sing and she's popular, and she gets nothing. Then (like TnB just mentioned) they just gave Haruna a little push with this latest single, but she is still one of the least popular members, if not the least popular. I'm completely confused. I'm starting to think that they just pull names out of hats or something.
