It's odd because some of the most popular members with them definitely don't stand out looks-wise if you were to ask me. But I guess it's different over there.

Sakura looks really fine compared to many pretty idols whose faces I can't even remember. She has this mysterious aura that defines herself and herself only.
But is it odd that international fans like Masaki? I thought Masaki is considered quite pretty in Japan.

I think Sakura has gotten prettier recently, but even when she auditioned for S/mileage no one, inluding foreign fans, though she was very pretty.

Sakura has a much more classical Japanese look than most in H!P. There's something timeless about her. I could see her singing enka someday.

^ Nice performance. They all sounded even better than usual there, but Tomoko's voice really is something; it gives them a fuller, more mature sound that is lacking in the other groups. I imagine she could be one of the top 3 H!P singers once her stamina improves. 
 
About Sakura's looks, I've seen a lot of people talking about cultural differences when it comes to beauty, but, like Saya said, there were a lot of people in the international community who thought Sakura wasn't pretty, too. I saw plenty of people calling her ugly when she joined Morning Musume. I mean, she's my absolute favorite MM member and I still don't think she's very attractive. But I think a lot of the international fans were able to warm up to her and get used to her face. Your attitude towards a person affects how you view their looks.

Actually, now that I think of it, Masaki is the one who most resembles the women in the old woodblock prints:

I think most of it comes from the fact that Sakura has a very mature, womanly look to her face rather than the cutesy, somewhat plain look that wota types prefer. Sakura is striking, whereas they prefer the more childish, unintimidating look. Plus, she doesn't have a small face or particularly pale skin, so that's a thing.  Faces like Sakura's are definitely more popular with female fans than male wota, imo.

Sakura just needs to not have bangs, or if she must have them, very long bangs. The China Girl look does not suit her at all.

Yeah, she looks awesome with an updo sans bangs. I liked the short flat bob on Mizuki though so it just depends.


I don't get the Asian fascination with different shades of pale though... Sakura's not even dark.

A while ago I calculated that she will actually only hit the half of her life mark on 28th July 2016, but someone with better math skills could perhaps verify it.


And considering that the H!O crowd is the most numerous and that poll is being posted where they can see it, I'm afraid it makes it a little redundant.

Sayumi's the one who posted it, about the 4,000 days being about half her life. You're math isn't wrong I don't think. It's early. I think she gave the exact amount of days of her life as 8,938.

The H!O poll never left H!O, while this one is making the rounds outside of it's original home. I would consider that a more broad spectrum of foreign votes than just all the ones from a single overly saturated website of chaos.

I've always wondered how Sayumi could sing nearly every day for 10+ years and not improve that much, and I guess I just forgot how frighteningly bad she used to be, because she has clearly improved a lot. She's still not very good, lol, although there are brief moments when that annoying nasal quality disappears and she sounds legitimately good. But god love her, she's a terrific idol. Imagine if she she had Risa's voice...

Lol! That analogy actually works with Sayu, though. "Lemon" is generally used to describe something that is bad or non-functional, and that's exactly what Sayu was back then. They've managed to make lemonade out of her, though. She's still not very good, but she's good enough for what they ask her to do now, which is quite a lot more than it used to be.
 
For the longest time I thought her being in the group was the biggest waste, that she never had any business being in MM. Now, I can't imagine the group without her leading it. I really hope they don't feel the need "shake things up" with this lineup this year, because I think any additions would mean Sayu graduating, and I really don't want to see her leave just yet.

When I watched the 6th gen auditions for the first time, I felt so bad for Sayumi because the instructor spent so much more time with her than the others and she needed so much more help. But I can't say much because I'd probably be in the same position. Even though I'm sure it was hell on her, you can tell that the instructor helped her a lot because she sang it so much better at the end.
That live of Akai Freesia is amazing. I'm prbably going to rip the audio and put it on my iPod since I love it so much. (And I'm just putting it out there, but I love those outfits, and I nominate them for the best outfits in H!P history...yes, I'd go that far. My taste is a little gaudy sometimes.)

I think that's what is part of Sayu's charm, even thought she knows she's not the best at singing, and is average at dancing, she still keeps on giving it her all, even after all this time, and her love for MM really shows. Even taking on the "poison tongue" persona on TV helps spread MM's name, even if it makes people dislike her (just like Momochi).

This got glanced over but I just wanted to say that I'll miss Aika. I'm surprised they didn't just graduate her from H!P. Not because she's not popular but because she's already about to be 21 and will probably be gone for at least a year.

I didn't understand most of it 'cause I am just starting Japanese.  The graph held a lot of info though.  Isn't there a lot more competition in all female groups now than there was during the "platinum era"? 
 
The innovative dance choreography has remained inspiring throughout the years.

The graph was a chart of their sales, and was saying that after 2005 when popular members like Iida Kaorin and Ishikawa Rika graduated their sales dropped, and then continued dropping.

Since Country Musume never officially ended, Tsunku said he's considering bringing them back with new members! Mai will probably be living in the US with her husband, but they will carry on without her.
