Well she definitely did better on it than on jishin motte.  I'd like to hear her with Mai though, I bet their voices would blend pretty nicely actually.

I love Mai AND Riho in this!  I think they both did very well even though Maimai's voice was going out at the end there a little but she finished strong!

So basically you should've gone to 1/25's concert if you like high, nasally voices? ;)  (Is Maa-chan's voice counted as nasally? It sounds that way to me...)

My question still stands though, now it's 18 slots instead of 17. They should have started the 3 slots a concert earlier if they want to give everyone a 2nd shot.

Masaki will improve. I like it that I can recognize her voice immediately when she sings. Akari sang it alright but she didn't add her personal touch to the song

I totally agree (at some points, she seemed to imitate Riho's voice to me xD) but I found it was the best parts (I totally prefer Riho's voice to Masaki's high pitchy squealing voice so)... She changed her pitch really quickly (from 1:49 to 1:51), it calls upon me. (not sure it's the right verb, please forgive me ^^')

Masaki reminds me of an early Tsuji, but with more control of her singing.

He likes Masaki's voice enough to have used her for the backing vocals in Manpower.

That reminds me. Totally off-topic, but the people they choose for recording the backing vocals/chorus completely confuse me. For example, on the Colorful Character album, I remember Riho doing it for several songs while Reina didn't do it at all, Takeuchi and Kanon were the only ones who did it on S/mileage's album (why not Meimi?), and they have Sayumi doing it all the time. I don't understand.

Riho and Sayumi have been doing it for the singles too, lately. I guess it's up to Tsunku or there's some higher up who wants certain voices to be more prominent (which I'm sure is already the case anyway).

I'm inclined to think it's a musically-based decision.  You can barely hear the backing vocals, so you really have to read the credits to know who does what, and a bad singer could totally throw off the song.

But then why would you use Riho and Sayumi instead of Reina? Or Akari instead of Meimi?

Masaki is good at singing because she is generally is on pitch and has good rhythm.
Like Q said, she reminds me of Tsuji.
I think she did good on this song.

Yeah, there's a difference between being technically good at singing and having a voice that is pleasant to listen to.  If you have the combo then good on you.

Hint: she will have the combo when she grows up. Gosh now I remember C-ute's voices used to be so nasal and annoying.

She's just decent, imo. Definitely not bad, but not good, either. For me, a good (idol) singer is on pitch 98% of the time, maintains a (relatively) healthy, full, resonant tone, uses vibrato (where appropriate), and puts emotion and power into their singing. Of course, they are idols, so even the best singers are pretty sloppy pitch-wise and their voices often thin out and become childish and obnoxious. It's just a matter of how much and how often.

I remember I use to hate Risako's voice, but as she aged and started to take control, she became one of my favorites. It took her years to get where she is and I'm sure Masaki won't be any different if she sticks around long enough and gets proper training.

Masaki is the same as Momoko. When she uses her big girl voice she sounds fine, but she sings too cutesy instead.
