Even theater ones ? I mean, with a performance every day + a few concerts through the year, they should have ended up somewhere on the list.

They don't have theater performances daily. And I'm not sure those would have counted on this list.

Random trivia: just realized that 2017 had the second largest number of (non-Kenshuusei) graduations/departures, with 10 members leaving; second only to 2009 (which was 26 iirc thanks to Elder Club so pretty unbeatable).

Second order from CDJapan in a row where the package got here (NYC) a week after shipping from Japan. That's great! I can now time it (as I did today) to be home when the package arrives because the way they package 3 DVDs now requires a bigger box than it used to and it no longer fits in my (large) mailbox, so the mailman has to bring it up to my apartment.

The order I got today includes the H!P Summer 2017 concert, the Buono 2017 concert, and something I'd overlooked two years ago--the final Berryz concert.

Next order: MM's new album and the Petit Best 18 releases.

Meh, the setlist for Haruka's graduation kinda sucked. I hope we get a release of the first Budokan date too.

Yeah, considering so many setlist changes it would be best if they released something like a best of of several shows.

Wow, I can't believe Mizuki and Erina are about to pass up Mari's tenure. Damn, time flies.

Even if one of them announced grad today, they're still gonna beat Kaori. Somebody in 10th gen (my money is on Ayumi) probably will too.

It's amazing how little impact 9th gen have had considering the length of their tenure.  I think we've discussed this before but it still blows my mind.  When I think "Morning Musume" I still don't instantly think of any of these girls, even if I do like some of their songs.

Sorry, but I strongly disagree. I've always said that 9th Gen was the best thing to happen to MM since 4th Gen. They re-energized the group after an extremely static period following the Yossie/Miki exit. They were down to five girls when 9th Gen joined, remember?! Riho remains my all-time favorite member. And I absolutely love Mizuki and Erina and relish every moment they're on camera in an MM concert. Mizuki's been a great leader, no easy task with a group that went up to 14 girls this year (now back down to 13, of course). I don't know who among the current members would be anywhere near as hard-working and generous a leader as Mizuki's been. Sometimes you can see the strain, but it hasn't been obvious lately. And most of my favorite MM concerts have come from the last three years.

9th gen energized things simply as a byproduct of being new after years and years and years of Platinum era's lineup imo.  The actual individual girls really had very little presence to me... even Riho, despite H!P's constant efforts to push her as a front girl (I think she got a more aggressive push than pretty much anyone since Nacchi really...) has never made any distinct impression on me.  Even though I was a fan the whole time she was in the group, I can only even recollect a vague impression of her face in my mind lol.

I don't know... when you say Morning Musume the picture most likely to pop into my mind is probably the time period right after 6th gen was added, when they had a million members.  I'm not sure why but I guess in a way, that line up encapsulated everything I like about idol groups - almost every single member just had such a distinct vibe, aura, presence, whatever you want to call it.  The worst era for me is probably around 2006 or 2008, the time period right after all the iconic 1st-4th gen members had left and Platinum era hadn't begun yet.

Yeah, I think you have to look at it a different way. If they had joined right after another gen would you have been as impressed by them.

To be fair, less opportunities though. Most tv shows, magazines, etc. aren't interest in them and management did their best to make sure the few that were weren't that interesting because every front girl they've picked from 9th gen on has been a total wet blanket off stage. Riho's biggest solo appearance was literally her showing off her PEN collection, Ayumi is somewhat more enthusiastic but not terribly funny or interesting, Sakura is just a singer, Maria's big thing is that she likes baseball, etc. That and people just don't want idols for stuff like they did five years ago.

Unless you're really impressed by them on stage, this lineup has nothing to offer.

MM’14 is probably one of my Top 3 lineups so I have to disagree.

I think ever since the 9th gen joined, the MM has shifted from being a group of individuals to a collective. Before you didn't need to be an ultra fan to get a sense of their personalities--seeing them on stage was enough. Now you have to actively look into their off-stage antics to know who they are.

To be fair, less opportunities though. Most tv shows, magazines, etc. aren't interest in them and management did their best to make sure the few that were weren't that interesting because every front girl they've picked from 9th gen on has been a total wet blanket off stage.</blockquote>

Do you think HP does this on purpose? We know some members like Masaki have big personalities that seem to get shot down by management.

I'm sure they've told her to keep her mouth shut but I don't think she has the right personality for variety anyway. I think to be good at variety you have to be well spoken and have a good sense of comedic timing and her thing is and always has been 'lol so random!!!'.

Doesn't account for the other billion girls in the group, though. I honestly just don't think of them as a very ambitious group outside of having the regular ambitions that every idol who has ever debuted has.

Yeah, I think girls like the two Harunas can talk rather well (even though Oharu's jokes are a bit...), but they never do more than necessary. Granted, what for? They still get paid more than most idols and considering they're mostly coming from families that are really well off they don't even need their paycheck.
And yeah, what Zoe said about them becoming a collective.

I should point out that I base my assessment of them almost entirely on concert performances and music videos. I don't watch a lot of their other TV appearances, other than the random video like the MM DVD Magazine with the Haruka-as-high school love object drama/skit or videos that Kitaoji sends me, like the one with General Momohime conducting the HinaFes selections with all of H!P present. To be honest, how they do on stage is most important to me.

Masaki is known for not liking being on TV. She always tries to avoid cameras.

Can't believe how 12th gen has passed Goto on the list and are just starting to have a (rather small) impact on the group. That's crazy.

What's crazier is that CG was announced around the same time and have already been shuffled and demoted to a sub group.

If Sakura Oda stays at least a year longer, she'll pass 10th Gen as the complete Gen with the longest tenure.

We were able to watch Kudo's graduation concert because it streamed over the Fuji TV website. Does this mean TV viewers were able to see it on TV (and not their computers) in Japan? Or was it only available via streaming? If it was shown on TV, when did that begin? When did H!P concerts first start getting broadcast to TV viewers in Japan live?

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure H!P streamed concerts are available on TV since at least Berry graduation (March 2015) (completely sure from Fukuda's graduation, November 2015).

But it’s on B!S Sky TV which is a subscription channel, like cable.
