I had little hope it wouldn't end like this but no. I feel worst for Riho, her grad and her last single were rushed (I like it a lot though) and she won't know "results" of her last single in MM before graduating.

Well, isn't she the one who rushed it though? She suddenly announced her graduation a few months from the actual day, so it doesn't seem to me like UFA had time to NOT rush it. Maybe that's wrong, but that was my impression.


And to be honest, I think they've done a fantastic job! We have good songs, Riho got showcased in her graduation single with little dance solos (which I don't think has ever happened before), and the outfits weren't hideous! The only thing left is her actual graduation with the live whatever-she-chooses song, and the outfit. If those don't suck, I'd say she made out like a bandit with such short notice for leaving.


Even idol-God Michishige didn't come out of her graduation unscathed thanks to that butt-ugly graduation dress...

Well, I think management will know the sales of the single and would tell her. It's just that we (the general public) won't know the sales since it's not public information yet.

Regardless of whether Oricon goes on break or not, there still wouldn't be a ranking out until after she's graduated. And since she'll probably stop blogging immediately after graduating, no one will get to hear her thoughts on it anyway.

I think I've fallen for One and Only. The English angle does help, making it something more immediately easy to follow along with (and sing to in my car). The outfits in the video also amuse me in that something like red plaid is the unifying theme. "Plaid pants? Yeah, now go idol it up."

I thought they were gonna nosedive back into Platinum Era sales purgatory after "Seishun Kozou ga Naiteiru," but they've bounced back. Overall, I'm not a huge fan of this single, but Tsumetai is pretty awesome.

They will eventually. I think idols are starting to go back out of being trendy and this lineup is barely busier/more relevant than Platinum Era despite single sales being higher. They barely even beat their album sales even though their singles sell twice as much.

Could be, although I think idol groups are judged primarily on sales of singles more so than albums. Strong album sales are more evidence of casual or cross-over appeal, I think. And let's be honest, the current group is selling, in some cases, three-to-four times as much as Platinum Era. That will likely change if your suspicions of an idol recession is correct, although I think the group would survive based on its brand alone.

Album sales can be evidence of just how big your wota base is too though because they aren't enticing people to buy four or five copies. It's not as if they sold 140,000 copies to that number of people. It's probably closer to half that. Handshakes have played a massive role in making this lineup seem bigger than they are.

I'd like for them to remove the handshake tickets to see what the actual sales for their music/videos are.
 
Edit: Also, hopefully they'll be more involved in the business this year. On H!S for their new year comments, Harunan mentioned she things being on TV programs and appearing with other artists is important, and so she'd like to do more of that this year. NOW, that may just be what Harunan wants.... but hopefully it's how the company wants to push MM this year as well.

Likely less than half, considering their Soundscan numbers.  Oricon numbers are 90% bulk-buying.

Yeah, probably. Even AKB's numbers (while still higher than other idol groups) had pitiful soundscan numbers compared to their Oricon total.


Too bad Soundscan is gone now so we won't ever get those comparisons ever again.

Yeah, the difference in AKB's numbers is also astounding.  I'm really going to miss Soundscan, it was nice seeing numbers I felt like I could actually trust, or that at least somewhat accurately gauged public interest.  The Oricon numbers are nice to look at but their way of counting sales just makes no sense in the current market.

Right, albums represent a groups total fan base -- wota plus casual -- better than singles do.
 
I honestly think we've reached the point where physical sales are less an indication of broad appeal than ever. I hardly know anyone that still buys physical CDs. Maybe it's different in Japan.

Apparently it is, but I've heard the digital market is on the rise just like everywhere else. Idols are almost nonexistent on those though, so those charts never get posted.

Yeah, about 80% of Japanese sales are still physical.  Digital is gradually gaining tiny bits of traction but still hasn't had any huge success - that said, the digital charts are gauge the general public a little more because pretty much only casual listeners purchase digital (or don't purchase at all - which is why every year there's some new article about how Japanese people have stopped buying and listening to music LOL)  Whenever I check it, it seems to be bands and female solo artists, which is essentially what Oricon looked like before bulk-buying totally took over.

But that page also says that it will go on sale in regular CD shops in the future, so CD Japan should carry it.
