No, they're not, and I hate Sailor Moon fandom's terrible coverage of this. Not you, emily, but the sources. The original Japanese source says that MomoClo is going to be on a comedy show doing a parody of the Sailor Moon theme with Yama-chan of Nankai Candies. It's like 4 paragraphs down after they tell us what all of the other comedians are doing. It's just the original song.
Back to Mamoru -
I too, would have liked to see Seiya take on Mamoru. Seiyaaaa man I shouldn't get started on my Seiya feels. But I agree that I like Mamoru much better in the live action and also the musicals. I think the live action gave him a role closer to what he had in the manga, and yeah, he was hot. In the musicals I think they acknowledged some of his anime ridiculousness and made it into a joke, but also (usually) had him played by pretty hot and/or suave guys so his whole ~*Omg handsome prince*~ thing worked better.
Anime Mamoru very underdeveloped but we were never supposed to really understand him anyhow given the emphasis on Usagi's character and her projections onto him. Safe to say, imo, that he similarly idealized Sailor Moon when he didn't know her identity and equated her to the girl in his recurring dreams.
I think a big reason why he easily accepted his "fate" is because his civilian life was always precariously experienced due to his amnesia and shit childhood. His past life then gives his current orphaned, identity-less existence a new significant meaning and purpose. This is completely different from Usagi who had such a fulfilling civilian life that she has to constantly negotiate who she "really is."
Anyway, I also think they toned down the chemistry precisely because its a kid's show and he's like too old for her. There is that season 1 episode with Motoki's girlfriend who goes to Africa -remember? And Mamoru and Motoki talk about the girls as being little kids, little sister-like. Manga is different, of course.
I agree that the idealization went both ways. I don't remember much about Mamoru's shit childhood, I'll have to pay attention to that in my re-watch. Honestly though, I'm not sure he's much better developed in the manga. I've been re-reading it over the course of a looot of months and am currently in the Stars arc where he doesn't play much of a role, so I do need to reread again to get a better grasp on him, but I still feel like there's really a lack of moments where we see them caring for each other and loving each other for reasons beyond ~*Destiny*~. Other than a few pretty illustrations Naoko did for art books.
I wouldn't say the show toned down the chemistry because of it being a kid's show. I suppose the age thing was a factor, but Haruka and Michiru had chemistry in spades and they were a lesbian couple, which could be considered just as risqué. And it was done so wonderfully! It's never mentioned on screen in a direct way that they're a couple, yet we're giving countless scenes of them being flirty, caring for each other, and making sacrifices for each other all because Haruka and Michiru, the civilians, are in love. There's no backstory about Uranus and Neptune being fated to be together, and as obsessed as they are with THE MISSION we still see instances where they prioritize "Haruka and Michiru" over "Uranus" and "Neptune." I just don't remember seeing as much of that from Usagi and Mamoru in any canon =/
Also, does anyone remember that SuperS episode where Mamoru's friends from college come over and they don't believe he actually has a girlfriend because they've never met her and he has zero pictures of her in his place? What a great boyfriend! And then when Usagi and Chibiusa show up they fight over Mamoru in front of his friends and omg I've never felt so much second hand embarrassment. Also there's that time when someone asks why he loves Usagi and he says "Because she has beautiful dreams." Dude, weak. Apparently LOTS of people have beautiful dreams, that's what this whole season is about.

Thank god! I've been waiting for them to reveal the song for ages. Of course, I'm hoping for Moonlight Densetsu, but I'm ok if it isn't. If it is the original (which I'm guessing it won't be) I just hope they don't fuck it up.
Nevermind
Also, I too have been rewatching. Or basically watching the Japanese version for the first time. I've seen a lot of the English version (<way back before I knew of US censorship and editing).
Has anyone else been buying the new translations of the manga. I have volumes 6,7, and 9 because 1) I was not aware my Walmart was carrying it, 2) they still had a copy of 7 left when nine came out, so they just skipped over 8. (They only stock 3 copies of each volume and there is only one SM fan other than me that I know in this town.)

Re: SAILOR MOON ANIME REBOOT SUMMER 2013 - MOMO IRO CLOVER TO SING THEME SONG
The anime really messed up by making Mamoru a college student from the start. It would have been nice to see more of that time between them discovering each other's identities and discovering their pasts.

I never gave this that much thought, but now I'm annoyed that they put so OBVIOUSLY little effort into Mamoru and Usagi's relationship. Thanks guys My assessment previously has always been get out of the way, more Haruka/Michiru scenes pls.
But yeah. It seems really half-assed compared to everything else, which is weird because it's the main romantic relationship. Did Naoko ever talk about this in an interview or liner notes? It seems like she didn't want to write a traditional love story at all but felt obligated to throw a dude in there.

Mamoru is gay, unable to admit it, and uses Usagi as his beard.
Or he's ashamed of dating a junior high student in college because lol pedo laws
I call former due to lack of chemistry.
And I forgot how much I hated Usagi's immaturity when it came to Mamoru and Chibiusa but since this conversation maybe she should be worried because Chibiusa was the younger woman and he obs likes them young. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... I don't think she failed with the relationship in the manga though. It developed normally (or as normally as a manga can get) without knowledge of their pasts, and they ran into at least one obstacle per arc that most couples would face (him neglecting her, attraction to other people, him neglecting her).

He also was a high school student in the manga. That always bothered me that they AGED him for a cartoon that was supposedly aimed towards children.

I read this recently. It doesn't directly address what you mentioned, but she said "Tuxedo Mask was made in my image of my ideal man, because I like men that I can't rely on." She also mentions that when coming up with the idea she mentioned her love of sentai and wanting to do that type of thing with an all female group. My guess is that she intended to write a story focused on female heroines and Mamoru became less interesting because she didn't want to create a hero figure to overshadow the power of Sailor Moon.

It did develop better in the manga (and live action), but I still don't recall many scenes showing their chemistry and connection. One of my issues with the manga though was that things moved very quickly and there wasn't much room for character development. Aside from Usagi and ChibiUsa we really don't see fully developed personalities for almost any of the other main characters. I was just reading some discussion on this - I think this is why the best way to enjoy the series is to blend all of the canons. If you don't, all versions have holes. But, imo, Mamoru is boring in all of them.

My guess is that this was a dumb oversight rather than intentional. Because it really doesn't make any sense. He was age 17-18 in the manga, so still quite a bit older, and he does eventually go to college. I feel like the anime was trying to play up the "cool older guy" thing and just went too far.

Actually IIRC the conflict for Nehelenia's arc was him hiding his sickness and her being immature.

He was age 17-18 in the manga, so still quite a bit older, and he does eventually go to college. I feel like the anime was trying to play up the "cool older guy" thing and just went too far.

He and Usagi are 3 years apart in the manga. She started high school when he started college.

That's... what I said. He's specifically listed as 17-18 in the Materials Collection, and Usagi is 14 at series start. So three years apart. It's the specific ages that they are that makes it matter though. A 3-year age gap is no big deal when you're say 20 and 23. But there is a huge difference in the maturity level of a 14 year old and a 17 year old.
Anyway, here's MomoClo and Yama-chan's parody.

I don't know why but that made me so happy I started crying. I love that Momoka is Jupiter even though she's so tiny! haha the facial expressions are great.

They technically should have been 13 and 16 at the start of the series.
I don't see 3 years as being a big gap though. Seniors date freshmen all the time which is essentially what they are after the first year.

Oh hell no. I disagree, both in real life and in the SM universe.
Developmentally, people change a LOT when they are young and those developmental differences only close slowly as you get older. When I was 14, an 11 year old seemed REALLY YOUNG - like a total baby - and a 17 year old seemed like some glamorous sophisticated semi-grown up that was still cooler than "dad-old."
Which brings me to my second point: Mamoru is older because this is a goddamn fantasy shojo show. He has to seem removed enough to idealize. There is nothing dreamy about a snot nosed, immature, sticky-fingered, stinky, hormonal peer. You know whats dreamy? Boys that don't even go to junior high or, like, even high school maybe. They are soo sophisticated and grown up and wear blazers. Their friends have part time jobs. They are soo smart and go to col-leeegge and read books on quantum mechanics. They know how to drii-ve and don't even have to borrow mom and dad's car. Mamoru is distant and kind of aloof because he is still "aspirational" in the larger bildungsroman structuring Sailor Moon.
tl;dr junior high-college romances work only for the SM universe. Weird in reality.

Price is on the high end for that sort of figure and it doesn't come with anything special/ it has the usual things that come with those sorts of figures. Sculpt isn't too impressive either. Ugh they didn't even try to mask the joints either.

Re: SAILOR MOON ANIME REBOOT SUMMER 2013 - MOMO IRO CLOVER TO SING THEME SONG
I'm not impressed with the new action figure, but I still want it. Even though I probably won't get it. Maybe I can get my uncle to buy it for me if its the only thing I put on my Christmas list. I usually don't give them a Christmas list (So they'll just give me money), but I'll make sure to put links and everything if I do put it on there. And maybe the price will go down by then. Probably not, but hopefully.
Or, if I save my money, I might be able to convince my cousin to buy it on his credit card if I give him the money for it.

SHFiguarts just tends to do better with armored figures like Kamen Riders and such, the ones based off human characters always end up looking strange. :T I have two Pretty Cure ones and they both kind of have the same issue. /toy sperging

I'm making a 365 Sailor Moon Day calendar. Anyone want to help me find quotes, dates, and pictures? I think when its done (and if it looks good), it'll be shared online.
You can put up some of that Momoiro shenanigans on it too, in anticipation of the 20?? reboot.

Unfortunate news for those looking forward to this. http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2 ... -confirmed
I will probably watch it, but the delay has not ruined my day.

The doll will be $45.
If you preorder, you will get 2 extra faces and Luna.
In other words, if you even somewhat want it, preorder because otherwise you will be getting ripped off.
FUCK YOU BANDAI YOU FUCKING WANKERS.

So apparently the preorders for the figurine went on sale today and sold out within 3 minutes. That's absolutely fucktarded. Does anyone know if Bandai's going to be preparing more at least? They'd have to realize what a potentially lucrative venture this could be.

Amiami is the grail because they don't have It up yet.
I heard on a forum that the US version will come with everything. They sell officially on Amazon. it's cheaper to import surprisingly.
I'm constantly refreshing amiami, I'll try and snag one for you guys!
(I was lucky and got one off cdj of all places lol)
They sold out because they made a limited FP that comes with two extra faces and Luna.
I wonder how bad the scalping will be.

edit: I think I may not be able to. I'm almost 100% certain they will restrict it to one per customer like they have with other high profile releases. Maybe the delay odds them trying to negotiate more units.
I'll try to get at least one though.

Yeah, I'm refreshing amiami pretty often. It's not really for me, I have a friend who really wants it. (No really!) But if we both get one, I guess I wouldn't mind keeping it. I'm not really much of a collector though. Books and games maybe, but not so much figurines.'
edit: Was there an official statement saying these figurines will be released in the US? I didn't think Bandai was going to do that.

Sailor Mercury is going to have a figure release next! I wonder if they're going in the order they're added?
